The cuticular waxes of forage plants contain long chain n-alkanes with odd carbon chain lengths in the range C25-C37 which are quantitatively recovered in faeces. When these concentrations are used with the concentrations of administered synthetic even chain length alkanes, the voluntary intake (VI), faecal output (FO) and digestibility (DMD) of forages can be estimated (Dove and Mayes 1991, 1996).

A unique correlation has been established between Kauzmann temperature (Tk1) and the odd–even effect in n‐alkanes. The derived new parameter, i.e., Tm/Tk1 obtained from entropy conservation at Tk1, when plotted against chain length, provides a much sharper odd–even contrast than entropy of fusion plot reported earlier. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Reactions of cyanide radicals with alkanes have been investigated by ab initio methods. It is found that the potential energy surface for reaction of CN with a primary C-H bond in methane has a small positive barrier while reactions of CN with a secondary and a tertiary C-H bond in alkanes are barrierless at the correlated level. A simple explanation for the obtained negative temperature dependence of rate constants for reactions of CN with a secondary and a tertiary C-H bond in alkanes are given in terms of the collision theory of bimolecular reactions. It is shown that for barrierless reactions the negative temperature dependence of the rate constants is attributed to the variation of the pre-exponential factor with temperature.

Geometry and energy of argon clusters confined in zeolite NaCaA are compared with those of free clusters. Results indicate the possible existence of magic numbers among the confined clusters. Spectra obtained from instantaneous normal mode analysis of free and confined clusters give a larger percentage of imaginary frequencies for the latter indicating that the confined cluster atoms populate the saddle points of the potential energy surface significantly. The variation of the percentage of imaginary frequencies with temperature during melting is akin to the variation of other properties. It is shown that confined clusters might exhibit inverse surface melting, unlike medium-to-large-sized free clusters that exhibit surface melting. Configurational-bias Monte Carte (CBMC) simulations of n-alkanes in zeolites Y and A are reported. CBMC method gives reliable estimates of the properties relating to the conformation of molecules. Changes in the conformational properties of n-butane and other longer n-alkanes such as n-hexane and n-heptane when they are confined in different zeolites are presented. The changes in the conformational properties of n-butane and n-hexane with temperature and concentration is discussed. In general, in zeolite Y as well as A, there is significant enhancement of the gauche population as compared to the pure unconfined fluid.

The present work aims to investigate the phase transition, dispersion and diffusion behavior of nanocomposites of carbon nanotube (CNT) and straight chain alkanes. These materials are potential candidates for organic phase change materials(PCMs) and have attracted flurry of research recently. Accurate experimental evaluation of the mass, thermal and transport properties of such composites is both difficult as well as economically taxing. Additionally it is crucial to understand the factors that results in modification or enhancement of their characteristic at atomic or molecular level. Classical molecular dynamics approach has been extended to elucidate the same. Bulk atomistic models have been generated and subjected to rigorous multistage equilibration. To reaffirm the approach, both canonical and constant-temperature, constant-pressure ensembles were employed to simulate the models under consideration. Explicit determination of kinetic, potential, non-bond and total energy assisted in understanding the enhanced thermal and transport property of the nanocomposites from molecular point of view. Crucial parameters including mean square displacement and simulated self diffusion coefficient precisely define the balance of the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic interactions. Radial distribution function also reflected the density variation, strength and mobility of the nanocomposites. It is expected that CNT functionalization could improve the dispersion within n-alkane matrix. This would further ameliorate the mass and thermal properties of the composite. Additionally, the determined density was in good agreement with experimental data. Thus, molecular dynamics can be utilized as a high throughput technique for theoretical investigation of nanocomposites PCMs. (C) 2015 Author(s). The particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) catalyzes the oxidation of methane to methanol under ambient temperatures and pressures. Other small alkanes and alkenes are also substrates of this enzyme. We measured and compared the initial rate constants of oxidation of small alkanes (C1 to C5) catalyzed by pMMO. Both primary and secondary alcohols were formed from oxidation of n-butane and n-pentane. The alcohols produced from alkane oxidation can be further oxidized, probably by pMMO, to aldehydes and ketones. The apparent regioselectivity for n-butane and n-pentane is 100% 2-alcohols because the formation of primary alcohols is slower than further oxidation of these alcohols. The hydroxylation at the secondary carbons is highly stereoselective: (R)-alcohols are preferentially formed. The enantiomeric excess increases slightly with decreasing reaction temperature. The steric course of hydroxylation on primary carbons was also studied by using isotopically substituted ethane: (S)- or (R)-CH_3-CHDT, and (S)- or (R)-CD_3- CHDT and the reactions were found to proceed with 100% retention of configuration. A primary isotopic effect of k_H/k_D=5.0 was observed in these experiments.
