Organophosphonates are ancient molecules that contain the chemically stable C–P bond, which is considered a relic of the reducing atmosphere on primitive earth. Synthetic phosphonates now have a wide range of applications in the agricultural, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. However, the existence of C–P compounds as contemporary biogenic molecules was not discovered until 1959, with the identification of 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid in rumen protozoa. Here, we review advances in our understanding of the biochemistry and genetics of microbial phosphonate metabolism, and discuss the role of these compounds and of the organisms engaged in their turnover within the P cycle.

Exposure to agrichemicals can have deleterious effects on fish, such as disruption of the hypothalamus-pituitary-inter-renal axis (HPI) that could impair the ability of fish to respond to stressors. In this study, fingerlings of the teleost jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) were used to investigate the effects of the commonly used agrichemicals on the fish response to stress. Five common agrichemicals were tested: the fungicide - tebuconazole, the insecticide - methyl-parathion, and the herbicides - atrazine, atrazine + simazine, and glyphosate. Control fishes were not exposed to agrichemicals and standard stressors. In treatments 2-4, the fishes were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations (16.6%, 33.3%, and 50% of the LC50) of each agrichemical for 96 h, and at the end of this period, were subjected to an acute stress-handling stimulus by chasing them with a pen net. In treatments 5-7 (16.6%, 33.3%, and 50% of the LC50), the fishes were exposed to the same concentrations of the agrichemicals without stress stimulus. Treatment 8 consisted of jundiás not exposed to agrichemicals, but was subjected to an acute stress-handling stimulus. Jundiás exposed to methyl-parathion, atrazine + simazine, and glyphosate presented a decreased capacity in exhibiting an adequate response to cope with stress and in maintaining the homeostasis, with cortisol level lower than that in the control fish (P < 0.01). In conclusion, the results of this study clearly demonstrate that the acute exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of methyl-parathion, atrazine + simazine, and glyphosate exert a deleterious effect on the cortisol response to an additional acute stressor in the jundiá fingerlings. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. The marine environment offers both economic and scientific potential which are relatively untapped from a biotechnological point of view. These environments whilst harsh are ironically fragile and dependent on a harmonious life form balance. Exploitation of natural resources by exhaustive wild harvesting has obvious negative environmental consequences. From a European industry perspective marine organisms are a largely underutilised resource. This is not due to lack of interest but due to a lack of choice the industry faces for cost competitive, sustainable and environmentally conscientious product alternatives. Knowledge of the biotechnological potential of marine organisms together with the development of sustainable systems for their cultivation, processing and utilisation are essential. In 2010, the European Commission recognised this need and funded a collaborative RTD/SME project under the Framework 7-Knowledge Based Bio-Economy (KBBE) Theme 2 Programme 'Sustainable culture of marine microorganisms, algae and/or invertebrates for high value added products'. The scope of that project entitled 'Sustainable Production of Biologically Active Molecules of Marine Based Origin' (BAMMBO) is outlined. Although the Union is a global leader in many technologies, it faces increasing competition from traditional rivals and emerging economies alike and must therefore improve its innovation performance. For this reason innovation is placed at the heart of a European Horizon 2020 Strategy wherein the challenge is to connect economic performance to eco performance. This article provides a synopsis of the research activities of the BAMMBO project as they fit within the wider scope of sustainable environmentally conscientious marine resource exploitation for high-value biomolecules. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

When I was with you back in August of 2001, I mentioned that in New Mexico I served on the board of the New Mexico Agricultural-Chemical and Plant Food Association, and have, I hope, some appreciation of the work you do. I also truly appreciate your interest in your support of the work conducted at the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Thank you for that! Your support, always critical, becomes even more so in such difficult, difficult economic times as our state finds itself in today. Nearly $4 million dollars was permanently slashed from the IANR budget in three rounds of budget cuts between October 2001 and August 2002, a result of Nebraska's continuing revenue shortfalls. At the same time, our frustrated IANR constituents make it clear that nearly $4 million of need did not disappear with our funding. Now more cuts are expected in this legislative session.

Little is known about epidemiological markers that are associated with survival of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). We conducted a secondary case-based analysis of 465 de novo MDS patients from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (UTMDACC). We investigated the association between demographic as well as occupational exposure markers and survival while incorporating known clinical markers of prognosis. In our patient population, 60.6% were men and the majority were white (93.1%). The distribution of MDS subtypes by the French–American–British (FAB) classification was 81 (19%) refractory anemia (RA), 46 (9.9%) refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS), 57 (12.3%) chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), 173 (37.2%) RA with excess blasts (RAEB), and 86 (18.5%) RAEB in transformation (RAEBT). We found that those older at diagnosis (> 60 years of age) (HR = 1.68, CI = 1.26-2.25) were at a higher risk of dying compared to younger patients. Similarly, high pack years of smoking (>= 30 pack years of smoking) (HR = 1.34, CI = 1.02-1.74), and agricultural chemical exposure (HR = 1.61, CI = 1.05-2.46) were significantly associated with overall lower survival when compared to patients with none or medium exposures. Among clinical markers, greater than 5% bone marrow blasts (HR = 1.81 CI = 1.27-2.56), poor cytogenetics (HR = 3.20, CI = 2.37-4.33)), and platelet cytopenias (<100000/ul) (HR = 1.46, CI = 1.11-1.92) were also significantly associated with overall MDS survival.^ The identification of epidemiological markers could help physicians stratify patients and customize treatment strategies to improve the outcome of MDS based on patient lifestyle information such as smoking exposure and agrochemical exposure. We hope that this study highlights the impact of these exposures in MDS prognosis.^

ABSTRACT The main goal of this project is to evaluate the methods of geophysical prospection, also serving for surface hydrologic characterization in a research farm wine, reaching the most resoluteness for locating agricultural pollutants. To this end was made, first a theoretical review of geophysical prospecting methods that may be considered more suitable, a priori, as they reflect more closely the physical changes resulting from agricultural chemical measure low salinity. Reaching the objective of the project has made a series of Electrical Tomography profiles (ET) and Induced Polarization profiles (IP) also has conducted a drilling of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (RMN). It was obtained by tomography characterization techniques for determining subsurface litho logy in depth and abrupt lateral variations, as well as the porosity of these formations. The chargeability Section (IP) has enabled detection of ions dissolved in groundwater. Combining these results with those that was obtained by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance with the location of groundwater body and the surrounding rocks permeability, we are able to determine the pollutants and the mobility and distribution of contaminants. The bottom line is the method more effective for detection of contaminants would be the combination of all of them because they are complementary in the environmental study.

Vermiculite minerals are locally available in the Mozambique Belt of Tanzania but are not currently commercially exploited. In part this may be due to lack of any precise characterization. This study was carried out as a first step to assess the suitability of these vermiculites for crop production by characterization of their mineralogical and chemical compositions. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy combined with an energydispersive X-ray system were used to establish the mineralogy. Electron microprobe analysis and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry were used to study the chemical compositions and to identify any possible issues related to chemical composition that might affect their use if applied as soil conditioners. The samples were characterized as vermiculites and hydrobiotites with a wide variety of accessory minerals. Accessory minerals that might be of some concern are galena, fibrous amphiboles and sepiolite. The total levels of Ni in all vermiculites, and Cr in some, were also found to be high relative to common European standards and this might limit their potential as soil conditioners. It is clear that a field assessment of the bioavailability of various elements would be necessary before decisions relating to potential agricultural use could be made. © 2009 The Mineralogical Society.
