This study explores the factors contributing to female athletes' sustained participation on varsity athletic teams. Ten open-ended interviews were conducted with female varsity athletes to investigate what contributes to their sustained involvement in sport until and throughout university. Each interview was transcribed and then coded for emergent themes and categories. Grounded in the data were themes such as socialization, support systems, motivational factors, passion, opportunity to play, and physical ability. The results demonstrate that for women to continue to participate in sport, a positive learning environment must be created in which the women may share and grow in their experiences as a collective whole. Relationships are a dominant factor for sustained participation in athletics. There are a number of questions presented that may lead to further research, specifically in regard to what physical educators and coaches may implement in an educational, athletic, or practice setting to enhance females' positive experiences.

Mobile players in men's football are highly skilled professionals who move to a country other than the one where they grew up and started their careers. They are commonly described as migrants or expatriate players. Due to a much less advanced stage of professionalism and production of the game in women's football mobility projects are different. At describing the cases of Brazil, Equatorial Guinea, Mexico, Colombia and Portugal, the aim of this paper is to conceptualise an umbrella category for mobile players that can include current realities in the women's game, namely the transnational player who has gained and displays transnational football experience in different countries and socio-culturally contexts. Furthermore, analyses allow introducing two new subcategories besides the “expatriate”, namely diaspora players and new citizens.

Hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) are the most prevalent injury in a number of sports, and while anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are less common, they are far more severe and have long-term implications, such as an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis later in life. Given the high incidence and severity of these injuries, they are key targets of injury preventive programs in elite sport. Evidence has shown that a previous severe knee injury (including ACL injury) increases the risk of HSI; however, whether the functional deficits that occur after HSI result in an increased risk of ACL injury has yet to be considered. In this clinical commentary, we present evidence that suggests that the link between previous HSI and increased risk of ACL injury requires further investigation by drawing parallels between deficits in hamstring function after HSI and in women athletes, who are more prone to ACL injury than men athletes. Comparisons between the neuromuscular function of the male and female hamstring has shown that women display lower hamstring-to-quadriceps strength ratios during isokinetic knee flexion and extension, increased activation of the quadriceps compared with the hamstrings during a stop-jump landing task, a greater time required to reach maximal isokinetic hamstring torque, and lower integrated myoelectrical hamstring activity during a sidestep cutting maneuver. Somewhat similarly, in athletes with a history of HSI, the previously injured limb, compared with the uninjured limb, displays lower eccentric knee flexor strength, a lower hamstrings-to-quadriceps strength ratio, lower voluntary myoelectrical activity during maximal knee flexor eccentric contraction, a lower knee flexor eccentric rate of torque development, and lower voluntary myoelectrical activity during the initial portion of eccentric contraction. Given that the medial and lateral hamstrings have different actions at the knee joint in the coronal plane, which hamstring head is previously injured might also be expected to influence the likelihood of future ACL. Whether the deficits in function after HSI, as seen in laboratory-based studies, translate to deficits in hamstring function during typical injurious tasks for ACL injury has yet to be determined but should be a consideration for future work.

Taekwondo practice has been associated with physical and biomechanical overloads, which are related to occurrence of sports injuries (SI). However, etiological and nosographic information about SI are limited and conflicting. This study analyzed and characterized the SI in Taekwondo athletes, according to gender. Casuistic integrated 22 athletes, 12 men and 10 women, athletes from São Paulo State Team of Taekwondo, adult category, with 23,6±6,8 years, body weight of 66,0±13,1 kg and 1,72±0,09 m of height. Reported morbidity survey was used to obtain retroactive information to 2009 season. Nosographic variables were analyzed using Goodman’s Test for contrasts among multinomial populations. All athletes reported injuries in the season; 56 cases were registered, determining an injury rate of 2.54 SI/athlete; 26 events (46.4%) occurred in males (2.17 SI/athlete), and 30 (53.6%) were related to women (3.00 SI/athlete). There were predominance of injuries in joints (35,7%) and muscles (39,3%); both genders presented injuries in lower members (82.1%, p<0.01), predominant in combat situations (80.4%, p<0.05), during the preparatory period of training (73.2%). There was a higher treatment request among male athletes (73.1%), which showed high asymptomatic return (69.2%); the female group referred similar proportions of absence and presence of treatment request, collaborating for the greater symptomatic return of these athletes (70.0%). In conclusion, the results support predominance of muscles and joints injuries in lower segments, derived from fighting, involving female athletes.

Nettie Honeyball and Florence Dixie founded the British Ladies Football Club (BLFC) in 1894 with the aim to provide football-playing opportunities for girls and young women, but also as a means of making money. Theirs, in effect, was an attempt to create a professional football league for women. Public interest in 'the lady footballers' was enormous, at least in its early stages, and generated considerable attention from the press. Overall, press coverage of the BLFC was negative (football is a man's sport; football is a working-class sport; women are physically incapable of playing the game; women shouldn't appear publicly in bifurcated garments, etc.), with only a few notable exceptions. Did the stance adopted depend on the political leaning of the newspaper? Or were the reporters simply reflecting the social and economic realities of their time, struggling to 'explain' a marginal group - women athletes, or more specifically, middle-class women football players - engaging in a working-class male game? This article examines the press coverage of the BLFC. The double standard evident in the newspaper coverage was, on the surface, as one might expect: if a woman played well, she was a freak, possibly a man in disguise; if she didn't play well, it proved that women shouldn't play football. But on closer examination, the double standard was actually rather nuanced: if she played well and looked the part of a woman, she could be subject to praise; yet if she played well and didn't conform to the standard of feminine beauty, she faced ridicule, and her gender called into question.
