A presente pesquisa trata da análise da fundação da Neurologia. A maioria das obras que abordam o assunto a partir de uma perspectiva histórica, sobretudo, aquelas que privilegiam uma visão positivista, para a qual a investigação caminharia em direção a um ponto estático, tendem a alcançar o médico inglês seiscentista, Thomas Willis, como o inconteste precursor dessa já estabelecida especialidade médica. Nossa proposta é a de desconstruir essa ideia. A nosso ver, a historicidade do discurso científico estaria sempre em constante expansão e também em uma contínua transformação, pois diferentemente do ideal positivista, o instaurador do que Foucault designava como cientificidade não seria o descobridor de um objeto dado desde sempre, na medida em que seria enganoso supor uma história natural de um objeto cultural o objeto da história das ciências. Resta-nos, portanto, tentar compreender o sentido em que Willis funda o que ele mesmo denominava Doutrina dos Nervos. Entendemos que Willis instituiu um novo arquivo audiovisual, ou seja, uma nova articulação entre o visível e o enunciável, no que tange aos nervos. Propomos, enfim, que no horizonte da fundação a nova imbricação entre forma de representação e forma de vida emerge no mesmo processo em que Willis se consagra como um autor médico e cientista dos nervos.

Thomas Willis (1621-1675), author of the classical work Cerebri Anatome (1664), was arguably the father of the modern era of neurology. His clinical neurology, as described in his Pathologiae Cerebri (1667) and De Anima Brutorum (1672), was largely derived from personal observations and not from traditional authorities and was based around his concept of the animal spirits, a fictitious entity in many ways analogous to the present day idea of the nerve impulse. This concept allowed him to develop a pathology of the animal spirits which embraced the whole content of the clinical neurology and psychiatry of his times. The anatomical and physiological background to Willis' concepts of animal spirit dysfunction, and those disorders he regarded as due to disturbed function of intrinsically normal animal spirits, have been dealt with in the previous part of this paper. The disorders he attributed to intrinsically abnormal animal spirits, dealt with in this part of the paper, comprised two categories. In one, the animal spirits possessed explosive properties, whilst in the other the abnormalities were non-explosive in their nature. The former category included epilepsy, hysteria and hypochondriasis, whilst the latter included mainly disorders now considered psychiatric e.g. delirium, melancholy, madness and stupidity. Willis' ideas about the pathogenesis of nervous system disorder seem never to have been generally accepted, partly because they appeared at a time when others were increasingly calling into question the existence of the animal spirits. Nevertheless, Willis' attempt to record and interpret all nervous system disease on the basis of disorder of function of a single underlying mechanism represents a formidable synthetic intellectual endeavour on the part of a very busy physician. Establishing how invasive species impact upon pre-existing species is a fundamental question in ecology and conservation biology. The greater white-toothed shrew (Crocidura russula) is an invasive species in Ireland that was first recorded in 2007 and which, according to initial data, may be limiting the abundance/distribution of the pygmy shrew (Sorex minutus), previously Ireland’s only shrew species. Because of these concerns, we undertook an intensive live-trapping survey (and used other data from live-trapping, sightings and bird of prey pellets/nest inspections collected between 2006 and 2013) to model the distribution and expansion of C. russula in Ireland and its impacts on Ireland’s small mammal community. The main distribution range of C. russula was found to be approximately 7,600 km2 in 2013, with established outlier populations suggesting that the species is dispersing with human assistance within the island. The species is expanding rapidly for a small mammal, with a radial expansion rate of 5.5 km/yr overall (2008–2013), and independent estimates from live-trapping in 2012–2013 showing rates of 2.4–14.1 km/yr, 0.5–7.1 km/yr and 0–5.6 km/yr depending on the landscape features present. S. minutus is negatively associated with C. russula. S. minutus is completely absent at sites where C. russula is established and is only present at sites at the edge of and beyond the invasion range of C. russula. The speed of this invasion and the homogenous nature of the Irish landscape may mean that S. minutus has not had sufficient time to adapt to the sudden appearance of C. russula. This may mean the continued decline/disappearance of S. minutus as C. russula spreads throughout the island.
