We explore the tectono-magmatic processes in the western West Philippine Basin, Philippine Sea Plate, using bathymetric data acquired in 2003 and 2004. The northwestern part of the basin formed through a series of northwestward propagating rifts. We identify at least five sequences of propagating rifts, probably triggered by mantle flow away from the mantle thermal anomaly that is responsible for the origin of the Benham and Urdenata plateaus. Gravitational forces caused by along-axis topographic gradient and a similar to 30 degrees ridge reorientation appear to also be driving the rift propagations. The along-axis mantle flow appears to be reduced and deflected along the Luzon-Okinawa fracture zone, because the spreading system remained stable west of this major fault zone. North-east of the Benham plateau, a left-lateral fracture zone has turned into a NE-SW-trending spreading axis. As a result, a microplate developed at the triple junction.

The West Philippine basin (WPB) is a currently inactive marginal basin belonging to Philippine Sea plate, which has a complex formation history and various crust structures. Based on gravity, magnetic and seismic data, the tectonics in West Philippine basin is characterized by amagma spreading stage and strike slip fractures. NNE trending Okinawa-Luzon fracture zone is a large fracture zone with apparent geomorphology and shows a right-handed movement. The results of joint gravity-magnetic-seismic inversion suggest that the Okinawa-Luzon fracture zone has intensive deformation and is a transform fault. Western existence of the NW trending fractures under Ryukyu Islands Arc is the main cause of the differences between south and north Okinawa Trough. The Urdaneta plateau is not a remained arc, but remnant of mantle plume although its lava chemistry is similar to oceanic island basalt (OIB).

This report summarizes chemical and isotopic data from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 195 Site 1201. Pore water is divided into three intervals based on the rate of chemical change with depth. The shallowest interval is the red clay unit between 1.26 and 56.40 meters below seafloor (mbsf). In this section, there are overall decreases in the concentrations of alkalinity, boron, lithium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and sulfate, whereas concentrations of calcium and chloride increase. Values of d18O and dD plot near standard mean ocean water to the right of the global meteoric water line (GMWL). Five samples from 72.60 and 83.33 mbsf yielded pore water for analyses. These samples help define a trend in the second interval, which is between 56.4 and 238.98 mbsf. Here, concentrations of magnesium, potassium, sodium, and sulfate decease, whereas concentrations of boron, calcium, and chloride increase. Concentrations of alkalinity and lithium remain roughly constant. The deepest interval, between 238.04 and 504.8 mbsf, has comparatively slower decreases of sodium and sulfate, increases of calcium and chloride, slow increases of alkalinity and lithium, and roughly constant concentrations of magnesium, potassium, and boron. Values of d18O and dD in pore water between 146.98 and 504.80 mbsf plot in a linear trend to the right of the GMWL.

Our rock magnetic analysis of core Ph05 from the West Philippine Sea demonstrates that the core preserves a strong, stable remanent magnetization and meets the magnetic mineral criteria for relative paleointensity (RPI) analyses. The magnetic minerals in the sequence are dominated by pseudosingle-domain magnetite, and the concentration of magnetic minerals is at the same scale. Both the conventional normalizing method and the pseudo-Thellier method were used in conjunction with the examination of the rock magnetic properties and natural remanent magnetization. Susceptibility (chi), anhysteretic remnant magnetization (ARM) and saturation isothermal remnant magnetization (SIRM) were used as the natural remanent magnetization normalizer. However, coherence analysis indicated that only ARM is more suitable for paleointensity reconstruction. The age model of core is established based on oxygen isotope data and AMS(14)C data, which is consistent with the age model estimated from RPI records. The relative paleointensity data provide a continuous record of the intensity variation during the last 200 ka, which correlates well with the global references RPI stacks. Several prominent low paleointensity values are identified and are correlated to the main RPI minima in the SINT-200 record, suggesting that the sediments have recorded the real changes of geomagnetic field.

Metal-rich sediments were found in the West Philippine Basin at DSDP sites 291 (located about 500 km SW of the Philippine Ridge or Central Basin Fault) and 294/295 (located about 580 km NE of the Philippine Ridge). In both cases the metalliferous deposits constitute a layer, probably Eocene in age, resting directly above the basaltic basement at the bottom of the sediment column. The chemistry of the major (including Fe and Mn) and trace elements (including trace metals, rare earth elements, U and Th) suggest a strong similarity of these deposits to metalliferous deposits produced by hydrothermal activity at oceanic spreading centers. Well-crystallized hematite is a major component of the metal-rich deposits at site 294/295. We infer that the Philippine Sea deposits were formed at some spreading center by hydrothermal processes of metallogenesis, similar to processes occurring at oceanic spreading centers. A locus for their formation might have been the Philippine Ridge (Central Basin Fault), probably an extinct spreading center. We conclude that metallogenesis of the type occurring at oceanic spreading centers can take place also in marginal basins. This has implications for the origin of metal deposits found in some ophiolite complexes, such as those in Luzon (Philippines), which may represent fragments of former marginal basins rather than of oceanic lithosphere.

Three bottom sediment cores were collected from the top, slope, and foot of a small topographic high located near the West European continental rise within the Porcupine abyssal plain at the battleship Bismark wreck site. Using high-efficient gas chromatography technique we determined content and examined molecular composition of n-alkane fraction of hydrocarbons and phenol compounds of lignin. n-Alkane and phenol concentrations in bottom sediments of all three cores were low both in values per unit mass of sediments and in organic matter composition that is typical for pelagic deposits of the World Ocean. They vary from 0.07 to 2.01 µg/g of dry sediment and from 0.0001 to 0.01% of TOC; phenol ranges are from 1.43 to 11.1 µg/g and from 0.03 to 0.6%. Non-uniform supply of terrigenous matter to the bottom under conditions of changes in sedimentation environment in different geological epochs is the principal reason for significant variations in n-alkane and lignin concentrations with depth in the cores. Lignin and its derivatives make the main contribution to formation of organic matter composition of the region in study. With respect to n-alkane and lignin concentrations organic matter of deposits of the West European Basin is composed of remains of higher plants and of autochtonous organic matter of marine flora; they have mixed terrigenous-autochtonous (terrigenous-planktonogenic) origin.

We studied the grain-size, mineral and chemical compositions, physical properties, radiocarbon age, spore-pollen spectra, and diatom composition in sediments from Core PSh24-2537 sampled in the West Gotland Basin. Four lithological-stratigraphic units were distinguished: varved clays of the Baltic Ice Lake, black and black-gray (sulfide) clays of the Yoldian Sea, gray clays of Ancylus Lake, and greenish-gray sapropel-like littorine and post-littorine silts of the marine stage of Holocene. These units differ from each other both in their matter composition and in plant remains. In the littorine silts organic carbon concentra¬tion reached from 1.5 to 10.35%. Conditions of sediment accumulation and the stages of evolution of the West Gotland Basin over the post-glacial time are characterized.

西菲律宾海盆是西太平洋边缘海盆中最古老的海盆之一,从属于菲律宾海板块,研究表明西菲律宾海盆形成过程复杂。 本文对包括KR03-04航次在内的众多航次的海洋重力及磁力调查数据处理,获得了该区域布格重力异常及磁异常等值线图、上下延拓图、导数异常图等常规成果图件。同时,本文还对本单位在该地区所做的多道地震调查中的三条剖面进行了处理和解释,并对其中的两条测线作了重磁震联合反演研究。通过这些工作,本文得出该地区的构造特征。 该区分为冲大东海岭,乌尔达内塔海台及冲绳-吕宋断裂带等次一级的构造单元,总的构造为NWW走向,也有NE向的大构造带。其中,冲绳-吕宋断裂带破碎严重,NE向走向,在琉球海沟附近(126°E)转为NNE向,为一右旋的深大断裂,可能是由于菲律宾海盆受到琉球岛弧阻拦形成的,也可能是一个转换断层;乌尔达内塔海台中部存在一较大的NW断裂。冲大东海岭和乌尔达内塔海台可能是残留的火山弧;结合ODP及DSDP的相关资料,本文确定了琉球海沟外缘俯冲挤压造山带的形成原因及形成年代。在西菲律宾海盆,伏在一层薄薄的沉积物之下有较厚的一层基岩破碎带,这有可能是西菲律宾海盆无岩浆扩张的有力证据之一,此次扩张的动力可能来源于俯冲于琉球岛弧下面板块的拖曳。

This chemical and petrologic study of rocks from Site 448 on the Palau-Kyushu Ridge is designed to answer some fundamental questions concerning the volcanic origin of remnant island arcs. According to the reconstruction of the Western Pacific prior to about 45 m.y. ago (Hilde et al., 1977), the site of the Palau-Kyushu Ridge was a major transform fault. From a synthesis of existing geological and geophysical data (R. Scott et al., this volume), it appears that the ridge originated by subduction of the Pacific plate under the West Philippine Basin. Thus the Palau-Kyushu Ridge should be a prime example of both initial volcanism of an incipient arc formed by interaction of oceanic lithospheric plates and remnant-arc volcanic evolution. The Palau-Kyushu Ridge was an active island arc from about 42 to 30 m.y. ago, after which initiation of back-arc spreading formed the Parece Vela Basin (R. Scott et al., this volume; Karig, 1975a). This spreading left the western portion of the ridge as a remnant arc that separates the West Philippine Basin from the Parece Vela Basin. In spite of numerous oceanographic expeditions to the Philippine Sea, including the two previous DSDP Legs 6 and 31 (Fischer, Heezen et al., 1971; Karig, Ingle et al., 1975), and even though the origins of inter-arc basins have been linked by various hypotheses to that of remnant island arcs (Karig, 1971, 1972, 1975a, and 1975b; Gill, 1976; Uyeda and Ben-Avraham, 1972; Hilde et al., 1977), very little hard data are available on inactive remnant arcs.

Deep Sea Drilling Project Legs 59 and 60 drilled 15 sites along an east-west transect at 18°N from the West Philippine Basin to the Mariana Trench (Fig. 1) in order to study the nature and genesis of the back-arc, marginal basins and the remnant and active arcs of the region. Leg 59 drilled at five sites at the western end of the traverse: Site 447 in the West Philippine Basin; Site 448 on the Palau-Kyushu Ridge; Sites 449 and 450 in the Parece Vela Basin; and Site 451 on the West Mariana Ridge. Penetration into basaltic basement of these sites was 183.5 meters at 447 (8 basalt flows); 623 meters at 448 (46 basalt flows, sills, and dikes and volcaniclastic units); 40.5 meters at 449 (2 basalt flows); 7 meters at 450 (1 basalt intrusion); and 4 meters of basalt breccia at 451 overlain by 861 meters of volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks.

The basement cored at Site 1201 (west Philippine Basin) during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 195 consists of a 91-m-thick sequence of basalts, mostly pillow lavas and perhaps one sheet lava flow, with a few intercalations of hyaloclastite and interpillow sedimentary material. Hydrothermal alteration pervasively affected the basalt sequence, giving rise to a variety of secondary minerals such as K-Fe-Mg-clay minerals, oxyhydroxides and clay minerals mixtures, natrolite group zeolites, analcite, alkali feldspar, and carbonate. The primary minerals of pillow and sheet basalts that survived the intense hydrothermal alteration were investigated by electron microprobe with the aim of characterizing their chemical composition and variability. The primary minerals are mostly plagioclase, ranging in composition from bytownite through labradorite to andesine, chromian-magnesian-diopside, and spinels, both Ti magnetite (partially maghemitized) and chromian spinel. Overall, the chemical features of the primary minerals of Site 1201 basalts correspond to the primitive character of the bulk rocks, suggesting that the parent magma of these basalts was a mafic tholeiitic magma that most likely only suffered limited fractional crystallization and crystallized at high temperatures (slightly below 1200°C) and under increasing fO2 conditions. The major element composition of clinopyroxene suggests a backarc affinity of the mantle source of Site 1201 basement.

The authigenic minerals contained in the altered basal intervals of volcaniclastic sediments from Sites 447 and 450 of Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 59 are dioctahedral smectite (with variable crystallinity), phillipsite, and sanidine. Sanidine seems the most widespread and common product of basal alteration in the Philippine Sea marginal basins. The neomorphic mineral suites may have been produced by (1) halmyrolisis of the volcaniclastic sediments; (2) halmyrolisis of the underlying basalts; or (3) hydrothermalism associated with basaltic intrusions. At Site 450, other authigenic minerals occur (carbonates, analcime, clinoptilolite, Fe-Mn oxides), and the basal paragenesis is consistent with a hydro thermal origin. Such a process could have produced temperatures up to 200 °C in the tuffs lying as much as 2 meters above the contact with a basaltic intrusion. Products of low-temperature alteration, however, are also present in the altered interval of this site.
