We present a novel reference compensation method for eliminating environmental noise in interferometric wavelength shift demodulation for dynamic fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. By employing a shielded wavelength-division-multiplexed reference FBG in the system the environmental noise is mea, sured from the reference channel, and then subtracted from the demodulation result of each sensor channel. An approximate 40 dB reduction of the environmental noise has been experimentally achieved over a frequency range from 20 Hz to 2 kHz. This method is also suitable for the elimination of broadband environmental noise. The corresponding FBG sensor array system proposed in this paper has shown a wave-length resolution of 7 x 10(-4) pm/root Hz. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A prototype fibre-optic system using interferometric wavelength-shift detection, capable of multiplexing up to 32 fibre-optic Bragg grating strain and temperature sensors with identical characteristics, has been demonstrated. This system is based on a spatially multiplexed scheme for use with fibre-based low-coherence interferometric sensors, reported previously. Four fibre-optic Bragg grating channels using the same fibre grating have been demonstrated for measuring quasi-static strain and temperature.

An enhanced technique for interrogating fiber Bragg grating wavelength shift using cascade wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) couplers was proposed and demonstrated. Three WDM couplers which show a linear filter function over the expected wavelength range are employed and cascaded to track Bragg wavelength shifts. Compared with single WDM demodulator. sharper spectral slope is obtained and considerable linear filter range is kept. The static and dynamic strain sensor demodulation experiments demonstrated that the simple passive technique improves the sensitivity approximately two times and keeps 5nm linear demodulation range based on our devices. The cascade WDM coupler demodulation system has high scan rate which can be used to monitor fast vibration.

We have investigated the effect of different cap layers on the photoluminescence (PL) of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs). Based upon different cap layers, the wavelength of InAs QDs can be tuned to the range from 1.3 to 1.5 mum. An InAlAs and InGaAs combination layer can enlarge the energy separation between the ground and first excited radiative transition. GaAs/InAs short period superlattices (SLs) make the emission wavelength shift to 1.53 mum. The PL intensity of InAs QDs capped with GaAs/InAs SLs shows an anomalous increase with increasing temperature. We attribute this to the transfer of carriers between different QDs.

Organic microcavity light emitting diodes typically exhibit a blue shift of the emitting wavelength with increasing viewing angle. While the wavelength shift can be reduced with the appropriate choice of organic materials and metal mirrors, for further reduction of the emission wavelength shift it is necessary to consider a mirror whose phase shift can partly compensate the effect of the change of optical path within the cavity. In this work, we used a genetic algorithm (GA) to design an asymmetric Bragg mirror in order to minimize the emission wavelength shift with viewing angle. Based on simulation results, the use of asymmetric Bragg mirrors represents a promising way to reduce the emission wavelength shift. Detailed comparison between GA optimized and conventional Bragg mirrors in terms of resonant wavelength dependence on the viewing angle, spectral narrowing, and brightness enhancement is given. We describe how an acousto-optic tunable filter can be used to both demultiplex the signals from multiple fibre Bragg grating sensors and simultaneously provide wide bandwidth signal demodulation in a system using interferometric wavelength shift detection. In an experimental demonstration, the approach provided a noise limited strain resolution of 24.9 n epsilon Hz(-1/ 2) at 15 Hz.

Refractive index and structural characteristics of optical polymers are strongly influenced by the thermal history of the material. Polymer optical fibres (POF) are drawn under tension, resulting in axial orientation of the polymer molecular chains due to their susceptibility to align in the fibre direction. This change in orientation from the drawing process results in residual strain in the fibre and also affects the transparency and birefringence of the material (1-3). PMMA POF has failure strain as high as over 100%. POF has to be drawn under low tension to achieve this value. The drawing tension affects the magnitude of molecular alignment along the fibre axis, thus affecting the failure strain. The higher the tension the lower the failure stain will be. However, the properties of fibre drawn under high tension can approach that of fibre drawn under low tension by means of an annealing process. Annealing the fibre can generally optimise the performance of POF while keeping most advantages intact. Annealing procedures can reduce index difference throughout the bulk and also reduce residual stress that may cause fracture or distortion. POF can be annealed at temperatures approaching the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the polymer to produce FBG with a permanent blue Bragg wave-length shift at room temperature. At this elevated temperature segmental motion in the structure results in a lower viscosity. The material softens and the molecular chains relax from the axial orientation causing shrinking of the fibre. The large attenuation of typically 1dB/cm in the 1550nm spectral region of PMMA POF has limited FBG lengths to less than 10cm. The more expensive fluorinated polymers with lower absorption have had no success as FBG waveguides. Bragg grating have been inscribed onto various POF in the 800nm spectral region using a 30mW continuous wave 325nm helium cadmium laser, with a much reduced attenuation coefficient of 10dB/m (5). Fabricating multiplexed FBGs in the 800nm spectral region in TOPAS and PMMA POF consistently has lead to fabrication of multiplexed FBG in the 700nm spectral region by a method of prolonged annealing. The Bragg wavelength shift of gratings fabricated in PMMA fibre at 833nm and 867nm was monitored whilst the POF was thermally annealed at 80°C. Permanent shifts exceeding 80nm into the 700nm spectral region was attained by both gratings on the fibre. The large permanent shift creates the possibility of multiplexed Bragg sensors operating over a broad range. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. MEMS systems are technologically developed from integrated circuit industry to create miniature sensors and actuators. Originally these semiconductor processes and materials were used to build electrical and mechanical systems, but expanded to include biological, optical fluidic magnetic and other systems 12]. Here a novel approach is suggested where in two different fields are integrated via moems, micro fluidics and ring resonators. It is well known at any preliminary stage of disease onset, many physiological changes occur in the body fluids like saliva, blood, urine etc. The drawback till now was that current calibrations are not sensitive enough to detect the minor physiological changes. This is overcome using optical detector techniques 1]. The basic concepts of ring resonators, with slight variations can be used for optical detection of these minute disease markers. A well known fact of ring resonators is that a change in refractive index will trigger a shift in the resonant wavelength 5]. The trigger for the wavelength shift in the case discussed will be the presence of disease agents. To trap the disease agents specific antibody has to be used (e. g. BSA).
