The need for more efficient illumination systems has led to the proliferation of Solid-State Lighting (SSL) systems, which offer optimized power consumption. SSL systems are comprised of LED devices which are intrinsically fast devices and permit very fast light modulation. This, along with the congestion of the radio frequency spectrum has paved the path for the emergence of Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems. VLC uses free space to convey information by using light modulation. Notwithstanding, as VLC systems proliferate and cost competitiveness ensues, there are two important aspects to be considered. State-of-the-art VLC implementations use power demanding PAs, and thus it is important to investigate if regular, existent Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) circuits can be adapted for VLC use. A 28 W buck regulator was implemented using a off-the-shelf LED Driver integrated circuit, using both series and parallel dimming techniques. Results show that optical clock frequencies up to 500 kHz are achievable without any major modification besides adequate component sizing. The use of an LED as a sensor was investigated, in a short-range, low-data-rate perspective. Results show successful communication in an LED-to-LED configuration, with enhanced range when using LED strings as sensors. Besides, LEDs present spectral selective sensitivity, which makes them good contenders for a multi-colour LED-to-LED system, such as in the use of RGB displays and lamps. Ultimately, the present work shows evidence that LEDs can be used as a dual-purpose device, enabling not only illumination, but also bi-directional data communication.

Grazie all'enorme sviluppo dei LED, le comunicazioni tramite luce visibile stanno acquisendo sempre maggiore importanza. Obiettivo di questa tesi è implementare su schede a basso costo (come Rasperry Pi) un sistema di trasmissione e ricezione basato appunto sulla visible light communication. Dopo un primo tentativo di trasferire il codice OpenVLC, sviluppato dal centro di ricerca spagnolo IMDEA Network, su Rasperry Pi, si è deciso di intraprendere una nuova strada e si è implementato un trasmettitore VLC in Simulink di Matlab e una prima bozza di ricevitore che sfrutta la SPI (serial-parallel interface). I primi risultati mostrano il corretto funzionamento del sistema anche se con data rate molto basse. Sviluppi futuri prevederanno l'ottimizzazione del sistema.

In this paper we experimentally demonstrate a 10 Mb/s error free visible light communications (VLC) system using polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) for the first time. The PLED under test is a blue emitter with ∼600 kHz bandwidth. Having such a low bandwidth means the introduction of an intersymbol interference (ISI) induced penalty at higher transmission speeds and thus the requirement for an equalizer. In this work we improve on previous literature by implementing a decision feedback equalizer, rather than a linear equalizer. Considering 7% and 20% forward error correction codes, transmission speeds up to ∼12 Mb/s can be supported.

Nella società odierna, le telecomunicazioni costituiscono un’esigenza fondamentale della vita quotidiana. Difatti, il mercato della ICT (Information and Communications Technology) è in costante espansione, e viene accompagnato da un rapido sviluppo di nuove tecnologie. In particolare, si assiste a un sempre più rilevante ruolo svolto dalle comunicazioni ottiche, ovvero sfruttanti la luce: in questo contesto, il quale comprende diversi rami ingegneristici, si stanno progressivamente affermando nuove forme di comunicazione basate sulla luce visibile, la cosiddetta Visible Light Communication (VLC). Con questa Tesi ci si propone di implementare con Simulink e stateflow di Matlab il livello MAC (Medium Access Control), basato sullo standard IEEE 802.15.7 per le VLC e valutarne le prestazioni. Prescinde da questa Tesi la parte di implementazione su scheda stessa che è lasciata per sviluppi futuri. Nel capitolo uno si introducono le VLC e si discutono i principali scenari attuali dove possono diffondersi. Nel capitolo 2, si mostrano le principali linee guida afferenti agli standard che sono risultate necessarie per sviluppare lo strato MAC. Nei capitoli 3 e 4 si mostra come il layer sviluppato possa essere utilizzato in due principali situazioni: nel capitolo 3 è descritta la realizzazione di una comunicazione punto-punto, ovvero con un trasmettitore e un ricevitore; nel capitolo 4 è descritta l’implementazione di una rete di nodi, ambito in cui il livello MAC risulta indispensabile. Per ognuna delle situazioni si illustrano scelte e caratteristiche dei sistemi simulati e i risultati ottenuti, cercando di coprire diverse eventualità che intercorrono, più in generale, nella gestione e implementazione di sistemi di telecomunicazione wireless.

Over the past few years, the number of wireless networks users has been increasing. Until now, Radio-Frequency (RF) used to be the dominant technology. However, the electromagnetic spectrum in these region is being saturated, demanding for alternative wireless technologies. Recently, with the growing market of LED lighting, the Visible Light Communications has been drawing attentions from the research community. First, it is an eficient device for illumination. Second, because of its easy modulation and high bandwidth. Finally, it can combine illumination and communication in the same device, in other words, it allows to implement highly eficient wireless communication systems. One of the most important aspects in a communication system is its reliability when working in noisy channels. In these scenarios, the received data can be afected by errors. In order to proper system working, it is usually employed a Channel Encoder in the system. Its function is to code the data to be transmitted in order to increase system performance. It commonly uses ECC, which appends redundant information to the original data. At the receiver side, the redundant information is used to recover the erroneous data. This dissertation presents the implementation steps of a Channel Encoder for VLC. It was consider several techniques such as Reed-Solomon and Convolutional codes, Block and Convolutional Interleaving, CRC and Puncturing. A detailed analysis of each technique characteristics was made in order to choose the most appropriate ones. Simulink models were created in order to simulate how diferent codes behave in diferent scenarios. Later, the models were implemented in a FPGA and simulations were performed. Hardware co-simulations were also implemented to faster simulation results. At the end, diferent techniques were combined to create a complete Channel Encoder capable of detect and correct random and burst errors, due to the usage of a RS(255,213) code with a Block Interleaver. Furthermore, after the decoding process, the proposed system can identify uncorrectable errors in the decoded data due to the CRC-32 algorithm.

The rapid development in the field of lighting and illumination allows low energy consumption and a rapid growth in the use, and development of solid-state sources. As the efficiency of these devices increases and their cost decreases there are predictions that they will become the dominant source for general illumination in the short term. The objective of this thesis is to study, through extensive simulations in realistic scenarios, the feasibility and exploitation of visible light communication (VLC) for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) applications. A brief introduction will introduce the new scenario of smart cities in which visible light communication will become a fundamental enabling technology for the future communication systems. Specifically, this thesis focus on the acquisition of several, frequent, and small data packets from vehicles, exploited as sensors of the environment. The use of vehicles as sensors is a new paradigm to enable an efficient environment monitoring and an improved traffic management. In most cases, the sensed information must be collected at a remote control centre and one of the most challenging aspects is the uplink acquisition of data from vehicles. My thesis discusses the opportunity to take advantage of short range vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) communications to offload the cellular networks. More specifically, it discusses the system design and assesses the obtainable cellular resource saving, by considering the impact of the percentage of vehicles equipped with short range communication devices, of the number of deployed road side units, and of the adopted routing protocol. When short range communications are concerned, WAVE/IEEE 802.11p is considered as standard for VANETs. Its use together with VLC will be considered in urban vehicular scenarios to let vehicles communicate without involving the cellular network. The study is conducted by simulation, considering both a simulation platform (SHINE, simulation platform for heterogeneous interworking networks) developed within the Wireless communication Laboratory (Wilab) of the University of Bologna and CNR, and network simulator (NS3). trying to realistically represent all the wireless network communication aspects. Specifically, simulation of vehicular system was performed and introduced in ns-3, creating a new module for the simulator. This module will help to study VLC applications in VANETs. Final observations would enhance and encourage potential research in the area and optimize performance of VLC systems applications in the future.

Photoelectrochemical properties of FTO/BiVO4 electrode were investigated in different electrolytic solutions, potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium sulphate (Na2SO4), and under visible light irradiation condition. In order to accomplish that, an FTO/BiVO4 electrode was built by combining the solution combustion synthesis technique with the dip-coating deposition process. The morphology and structure of the BiVO4 electrode were investigated through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Photoelectrochemical properties were analyzed through chronoamperometry measurements. Results have shown that the FTO/BiVO4 electrode presents higher electroactivity in the electrolyte Na2SO4, leading to better current stabilization, response time, and photoinduced current density, when compared to KCl electrolyte. Besides, this electrode shows excellent performance for methylene blue degradation under visible light irradiation condition. In Na2SO4, the electrode has shown higher degradation rate, 51 %, in contrast to 44 % in KCl, plus higher rate constant, 174 × 10-4 min-1 compared to 150 × 10-4 min-1 in KCl. Results presented in this communication leads to the indication of BiVO4 thin films as alternate materials to use in heterogeneous photoelectrocatalysis, more specifically in decontamination of surface water. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We present a newly designed polymer light-emitting diode with a bandwidth of ∼350 kHz for high-speed visible light communications. Using this new polymer light-emitting diode as a transmitter, we have achieved a record transmission speed of 10 Mb/s for a polymer light-emitting diode-based optical communication system with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique, matching the performance of single carrier formats using multitap equalization. For achieving such a high data-rate, a power pre-emphasis technique was adopted. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

A multi-band CAP system is experimentally demonstrated for the first time in VLC.We show that with an 8-CAP testbed spectral efficiencies (~4.75 b/s/Hz) at a realistic distance of 1 m can be reached.

The prominent nitric oxide (NO) donor [Ru(terpy)(bdqi)NO](PF(6))(3) has been synthesized and evaluated with respect to noteworthy biological effects due to its NO photorelease, including vascular relaxation and melanoma cell culture toxicity. The potential for delivering NO in therapeutic quantities is tenable since the nitrosyl ruthenium complex (NRC) must first reach the ""target tissue"" and then release the NO upon stimulus. In this context. NRC-loaded lipid carriers were developed and characterized to further explore its topical administration for applications such as skin cancer treatment. NRC-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) and nanostructured lipid carriers were prepared via the microemulsification method, with average diameters of 275 +/- 15 nm and 211 +/- 31 nm and zeta potentials of -40.7 +/- 10.4 mV and -50.0 +/- 7.5 mV, respectively. In vitro kinetic studies of NRC release from nanoparticles showed sustained release of NRC from the lipid carriers and illustrated the influence of the release medium and the lyophilization process. Stability studies showed that NO is released from NRC as a function of temperature and time and due to skin contact. The encapsulation of NRC in SLN followed by its lyophilization, significantly improved the complex stability. Furthermore, of particular interest was the fact that in the NO photorelease study, the NO release from the NRC-loaded SLN was approximately twice that of just NRC in solution. NRC-loaded SLN performs well enough at releasing and protecting NO degradation in vitro that it is a promising carrier for topical delivery of NO. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work reports oil a novel nitrosyl-ruthenium complex hearing the azanaphthalene ligand quinazoline (qui) ill its coordination sphere. The product crystallizes with ail additional quinazoline molecule, yielding the compound cis-[Ru(bpy)(2)(qui)NO](PF(6))(3).(qui). This feature leads to all absorption band at lambda(max) = 430 nm in CH(3)CN and lambda(max) = 420 nm in phosphate buffer, which promotes the photorelease of nitric oxide under visible light irradiation (lambda > 400 nm), in 1 ethanol: 1 water (v/v) mixture or under physiological pH. Both the intensity and energy of this transition are dependent on solvent and solution pH, suggesting that the transition has a charge transfer nature, and that the association of the second quinazoline molecule with the complex is driven by weak interactions, possibly of the pi-stacking type. Light conditions during mycelial growth are known to influence fungi in many ways. The effect of visible-light exposure during mycelial growth was investigated on conidial tolerance to UVB irradiation and wet heat of Metarhizium robertsii, an insect-pathogenic fungus. Two nutrient media and two light regimens were compared. Conidia were produced on (A) potato dextrose agar plus yeast extract medium (PDAY) (A1) under dark conditions or (A2) under continuous visible light (provided by two fluorescent lamps with intensity 5.4 W m-2). For comparison, the fungus was also produced on (B) minimal medium (MM) under continuous-dark incubation, which is known to produce conidia with increased tolerance to heat and UVB radiation. The UVB tolerances of conidia produced on PDAY under continuous visible light were twofold higher than conidia produced on PDAY medium under dark conditions, and this elevated UVB tolerance was similar to that of conidia produced on MM in the dark. The heat tolerance of conidia produced under continuous light was, however, similar to that of conidia produced on MM or PDAY in the dark. Conidial yield on PDAY medium was equivalent when the fungus was grown either under continuous-dark or under continuous-light conditions.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of intrapulpal temperature changes induced by a quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) and a light emitting diode (LED) curing units on the metabolism of odontoblast-like cells. Methods: Thirty-six 0.5 mm-thick dentin discs obtained from sound human teeth were randomly assigned into three groups: QTH, LED and no light (control). After placement of the dentin discs in pulp chamber devices, a thermistor was attached to the pulpal surface of each disc and the light sources were applied on the occlusal surface. After registering the temperature change, odontoblast-like cells MDPC-23 were seeded on the pulpal side of the discs and the curing lights were again applied. Cell metabolism was evaluated by the MTT assay and cell morphology was assessed by SEM. Results: In groups QTH and LED the intrapulpal temperature increased by 6.4 degrees C and 3.4 degrees C, respectively. The difference between both groups was statistically significant (Mann-Whitney; P< 0.05). QTH and LED reduced the cell metabolism by 36.4% and 33.4%, respectively. Regarding the cell metabolism, no statistically significant difference was observed between both groups (Mann-Whitney; P> 0.05). However, when compared to the control, only QTH significantly reduced the cell metabolism (Mann-Whitney; P< 0.05). It was concluded that the irradiance of 0.5 mm-thick human dentin discs with a QTH in comparison to a LED curing unit promoted a higher temperature rise, which propagates through the dentin negatively affecting the metabolism of the underlying cultured pulp cells. Photodynamic therapy consists of the uptake of a photosensitizing dye, often a porphyrin, by tumor tissue and subsequent irradiation of the tumor with visible light of an appropriate wavelength matched to the absorption spectrum of the photosensitizing dye. This class of molecules produces reactive oxygen species when activated by light, resulting in a direct or indirect cytotoxic effect on the target cells. Photodynamic therapy has been used in the treatment of cancer but the technology has a potential for the treatment of several disease conditions mainly because of its selectivity. However, it is not clear why the porphyrins are retained preferentially by abnormal tissue. This paper describes a study of the effect of the association of porphyrin and visible light on two mouse fibroblast cell lines: A31, normal cells and B61, an EJ-ras transformed variant of A31. Two water-soluble porphyrins were used, a positively charged one, tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrin chloride, and a negatively charged one, tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin-Na salt (TPPS4) in order to assess the effect on cell survival. The results suggest that the B61 cell line is more sensitive to incubation with the anionic porphyrin (TPPS4) followed by light irradiation and that the anionic porphyrin is more efficient in killing the cells than the cationic porphyrin.

The objective of this thesis was to study the effect of pulsed electric field on the preparation of TiO2 nanoparticles via sol-gel method under the visible light irradiation. The literature part introduces properties of different TiO2 crystal forms and principle of photocatalysis. It was expected that pulsed electric field would have an influence on degradation for oxalic acid and formic acid. TiO2 samples were prepared by using three frequencies (50Hz, 294Hz, and 963Hz) and two treatment times (12 minutes and 24 minutes) of pulsed electric field. The photocatalytic activities of TiO2 samples produced with sol-gel method were also compared with the TiO2 particles made by previous study and with the commercial TiO2 powder Aeroxide® (Evonic Degussa GmbH) at the same condition. Results show that pulsed electric field does have an effect on degradation for oxalic acid and formic acid. Generally, higher photocatalytic activities for oxalic acid and formic acid were obtained with lower frequency and longer treatment time of pulsed electric field.
