Early Oligocene siliceous microfossils were recovered in the upper c. 193 m of the CRP-3 drillcore. Although abundance and preservation are highly variable through this section, approximately 130 siliceous microfossil taxa were identified, including diatoms, silicoflagellates, ebridians, chrysophycean cysts, and endoskeletal dinoflagellates. Well-preserved and abundant assemblages characterize samples in the upper c. 70 m and indicate deposition in a coastal setting with water depths between 50 and 200 m. Abundance fluctuations over narrow intervals in the upper c. 70 mbsf are interpreted to reflect environmental changes that were either conducive or deleterious to growth and preservation of siliceous microfossils. Only poorly-preserved (dissolved, replaced, and/or fragmented) siliceous microfossils are present from c. 70 to 193 mbsf. Diatom biostratigraphy indicates that the CRP-3 section down to c. 193 mbsf is early Oligocene in age. The lack of significant changes in composition of the siliceous microfossil assemblage suggests that no major hiatuses are present in this interval. The first occurrence (FO) of Cavitatus jouseanus at 48.44 mbsf marks the base of the Cavitatus jouseanus Zone. This datum is inferred to be near the base of Subchron C12n at c. 30.9 Ma. The FO of Rhizosolenia antarctica at 68.60 mbsf marks the base of the Rhizosolenia antarctica Zone. The FO of this taxon is correlated in deep-sea sections to Chron C13 (33.1 to 33.6 Ma). However, the lower range of R. antarctica is interpreted as incomplete in the CRP-3 drillcore, as it is truncated at an underlying interval of poor preservation: therefore, an age of c. 33.1 to 30.9 Ma is inferred for interval between c. 70 and 50 mbsf. The absence of Hemiaulus caracteristicus from diatom-bearing interval of CRP-3 further indicates an age younger than c. 33 Ma (Subchron C13n) for strata above c. 193 mbsf. Siliceous microfossil assemblages in CRP-3 are significantly different from the late Eocene assemblages reported CIROS-1 drillcore. The absence of H. caracteristicus, Stephanopyxis splendidus, and Pterotheca danica, and the ebridians Ebriopsis crenulata, Parebriopsis fallax, and Pseudoammodochium dictyoides in CRP-3 indicates that the upper 200 m of the CRP-3 drillcore is equivalent to part of the stratigraphic interval missing within the unconformity at c. 366 mbsf in CIROS-1.

Benthic foraminiferal faunas from three bathyal sequences provide a proxy record of oceanographic changes through the mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT) on either side of the Subtropical Front (STF), east of New Zealand. Canonical correspondence analyses show that factors related to water depth, latitude and climate cycles were more significant than oceanographic factors in determining changes in faunal assemblage composition over the last 1 Ma. Even so, mid-Pleistocene faunal changes are recognizable and can be linked to inferred palaeoceanographic causes. North of the largely stationary STF the faunas were less variable than to the south, perhaps reflecting the less extreme glacial-interglacial fluctuations in the overlying Subtropical Surface Water. Prior to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 21 and after MIS 15, the northern faunas had fairly constant composition, but during most of the MPT faunal composition fluctuated in response to climate-related food-supply variations. Faunal changes through the MPT suggest increasing food supply and decreasing dissolved bottom oxygen. South of the STF, beneath Subantarctic Surface Water, mid-Pleistocene faunas exhibited strong glacial-interglacial fluctuations, inferred to be due to higher interglacial nutrient supply and lower oxygen levels. The most dramatic faunal change in the south occurred at the end of the MPT (MIS 17- 12). with an acme of Abditodentrix pseudothalmanni, possibly reflecting higher carbon flux and lower bottom oxygen. This study suggests that the mid-Pleistocene decline and extinction of a group of elongate, cylindrical deep-sea foraminifera may have been related to decreased bottom oxygen concentrations as aresult of slower deep-water currents.

The biostratigraphic distribution and abundance of lower Oligocene to Pleistocene diatoms is documented from Holes 747A, 747B, 748B, 749B, and 751A drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 120 on the Kerguelen Plateau in the southeast Indian Ocean. The occurrence of middle and upper Eocene diatoms is also documented, but these are rare and occur in discrete intervals. The recovery of several Oligocene to Pleistocene sections with minimal coring gaps, relatively good magnetostratigraphic signatures, and mixed assemblages of both calcareous and siliceous microfossils makes the above four Leg 120 sites important biostratigraphic reference sections for the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continent. A high-resolution diatom zonation divides the last 36 m.y. into 45 zones and subzones. This zonation is built upon an existing biostratigraphic framework developed over the past 20 yr of Southern Ocean/Antarctic deep-sea coring and drilling. After the recent advances from diatom biostratigraphic studies on sediments from Legs 113, 114, 119, and 120, a zonal framework for the Southern Ocean is beginning to stabilize. The potential age resolution afforded by the high-diversity diatom assemblages in this region ranks among the highest of all fossil groups. In addition to the 46 datum levels that define the diatom zones and subzones, the approximate stratigraphic level, age, and magnetic anomaly correlative of more than 150 other diatom datums are determined or estimated. These total 73 datum levels for the Pliocene-Pleistocene, 67 for the Miocene, and 45 for the Oligocene. Greater stratigraphic resolution is possible as the less common and poorly documented species become better known. This high-resolution diatom stratigraphy, combined with good to moderately good magnetostratigraphic control, led to the recognition of more than 10 intervals where hiatuses dissect the Oligocene-Pleistocene section on the Kerguelen Plateau. We propose 12 new diatom taxa and 6 new combination

Early to middle Miocene radiolarian assemblages were examined at three sites (747, 748, and 751) that were cored during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 120 south of the present polar frontal zone on the Kerguelen Plateau (Indian sector of the Southern Ocean). The radiolarian biostratigraphic study relies on a radiolarian zonation recently developed on Leg 113 materials in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, which is correlated with the geomagnetic time scale. New radiolarian biostratigraphic data also considering the established geomagnetic polarity record were used to improve and emend the age calibration of some lower Miocene radiolarian zones and a redefined middle Miocene radiolarian zonation is proposed. Based on these results, a revised age assignment of the lower Miocene sections drilled at Leg 113 Sites 689 and 690 is proposed.

Temporal changes in benthic foraminiferal assemblages were quantitatively examined (> 63 µm fraction) in four southwest Pacific deep-sea Neogene sequences in a depth transect between approximately 1300 and 3200 m to assist in evaluating paleoeeanographic history. The most conspicuous changes in benthic foraminiferal assemblages occurred in association with paleoclimatic changes defined at least in part by oxygen isotopic changes. The largest, centered at ~15 Ma (early Middle Miocene), is represented by an increase in the relative frequencies of Epistominella exigua, which underwent a major upward depth migration at that time. This was contemporaneous with the well-known positive oxygen isotopic shift in the early Middle Miocene. In Sites 588 and 590, most of the increase in relative abundances of E. exigua occurred during the middle to later part of the ~80 shift, following major growth of the east Antarctic ice sheet. Later assemblage changes occurred at 8.5 and 6.5 Ma. These associations indicate that the benthic foraminiferal assemblages in this depth transect largely adjusted to changes in deep waters related to Antarctic cryospheric evolution. In general, the Neogene benthic foraminiferal assemblages in this region underwent little change during the last 23 million years. This faunal conservatism suggests that deep-sea environments underwent relatively little change in the southwest Pacific during much of the Neogene. Although paleoceanographic changes did occur, partly in response to highlatitude cryospheric evolution, these were not of sufficient magnitude to create major deep-sea faunal changes in this part of the ocean. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages are dominated by individuals smaller than 150 µm. Most taxonomic turnover occurred in the larger (> 150 µm) size fractions.

The Bounty Trough, east of New Zealand, lies along the southeastern edge of the present-day Subtropical Front (STF), and is a major conduit via the Bounty Channel, for terrigenous sediment supply from the uplifted Southern Alps to the abyssal Bounty Fan. Census data on 65 benthic foraminiferal faunas (>63 µm) from upper bathyal (ODP 1119), lower bathyal (DSDP 594) and abyssal (ODP 1122) sequences, test and refine existing models for the paleoceanographic and sedimentary history of the trough through the last 150 ka (marine isotope stages, MIS 6-1). Cluster analysis allows recognition of six species groups, whose distribution patterns coincide with bathymetry, the climate cycles and displaced turbidite beds. Detrended canonical correspondence analysis and comparisons with modern faunal patterns suggest that the groups are most strongly influenced by food supply (organic carbon flux), and to a lesser extent by bottom water oxygen and factors relating to sediment type. Major faunal changes at upper bathyal depths (1119) probably resulted from cycles of counter-intuitive seaward-landward migrations of the Southland Front (SF) (north-south sector of the STF). Benthic foraminiferal changes suggest that lower nutrient, cool Subantarctic Surface Water (SAW) was overhead in warm intervals, and higher nutrient-bearing, warm neritic Subtropical Surface Water (STW) was overhead in cold intervals. At lower bathyal depths (594), foraminiferal changes indicate increased glacial productivity and lowered bottom oxygen, attributed to increased upwelling and inflow of cold, nutrient-rich, Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) and shallowing of the oxygen-minimum zone (upper Circum Polar Deep Water, CPDW). The observed cyclical benthic foraminiferal changes are not a result of associations migrating up and down the slope, as glacial faunas (dominated by Globocassidulina canalisuturata and Eilohedra levicula at upper and lower bathyal depths, respectively) are markedly different from those currently living in the Bounty Trough. On the abyssal Bounty Fan (1122), faunal changes correlate most strongly with grain size, and are attributed to varying amounts of mixing of displaced and in-situ faunas. Most of the displaced foraminifera in turbiditic sand beds are sourced from mid-outer shelf depths at the head of the Bounty Channel. Turbidity currents were more prevalent during, but not restricted to, glacial intervals.

Benthic foraminifers were studied in 99 samples collected from the lower 200 m of Hole 765C. The studied section ranges from the Tithonian to Aptian, and benthic foraminifers can be subdivided into five assemblages on the basis of faunal diversity and stratigraphic ranges of distinctive species. Compared with deep-water assemblages from Atlantic DSDP sites and Poland, assemblages from the Argo Abyssal Plain display a higher diversity of agglutinated forms, which comprise the autochthonous assemblages. Assemblages at the base of Hole 765C are wholly composed of agglutinated forms, reflecting deposition beneath the carbonate compensation depth (CCD). Most calcareous benthic species are found in turbidite layers, and the presence of an upper Valanginian Praedorothia praehauteriviana Assemblage may indicate deposition at or just below the CCD. The P. praehauteriviana Assemblage from Hole 765C is the temporal equivalent of similar assemblages from DSDP Holes 534A, 416A, 370, 105, and 101 in the Atlantic Ocean and Hole 306 in the Pacific Ocean. Stratigraphic ranges of cosmopolitan agglutinated species at Site 765 generally overlap with their reported ranges in the Atlantic and in the bathyal flysch sequences of the Carpathians; however, several species from Hole 765C have not been previously reported from Uppermost Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous abyssal sediments.

During the "Meteor"-Expedition to the Persian Gulf in March-May 1965, approximately 300 samples were collected. Most of them have been already studied by various authors in sedimentological as well as micropaleontological respects. 49 samples were selected for ostracode studies. These samples are arranged to form a long-axis section ("Laengsprofil"), and 4 shorter cross-profiles, perpendicular to the long-axis profile in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. 52 species of ostracodes in this area were specifically determined; 39 of them are described under open nomenclature. 13 species are already known from surrounding sea areas: 2 species from the Red Sea; 2 species from the east coast of Africa; 1 species from the Mediterranean Sea; and others from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. 12 species show close relationships to species from the Indopacific Ocean. The ostracode species found in the area can be grouped after the method of BRAUN-BLANQUT into 2 bioassociations. Association 1 with the following 4 characteristic species : Cytherella cf. pulchra, Loxoconcha sp. A, Neomonoceratina sp. A, Alocopocythere reticulata. Association 2 with 1 characteristic species: Ruggieria (Ruggieria) sp. B. The association 1 is widespread in the entire studied area of the Persian Gulf, where it is considered to characterize the shallow water region down to 200 m. The association 2 is restricted to the deeper water below 200 m of the inner part of the Oman Gulf. Only a few species known from the shallow water association of the Persian Gulf are present. Within the two ostracode associations mentioned above 4 zones from the total studied area could be related to the water depth. The zones A-D are characterized more or less readily by the relative abundance of certain species: Zone A : 7-30 m depth, on substrates of poorly coarse-grained clayey marl; Zone B: 30-94 m depth, on substrates of richly coarse-grained calcareous marl; Zone C: 94-1961208 m depth, on substrates of richly coarse-grained calcareous marl; Zone D: 196/208-500 m depth, on substrates of calcareous clay, poor in benthos. The regional and bathymetric distribution of the ostracode fauna in the area studied was compared in relation to 10 environmental factors: water depth, temperature, salinity, water density, O2-concentration, phosphate-silica contents, pH-values, stratification of the water body, water currents and type of sediments. The major environmental factors which appear to control the ostracode distribution are water depth (as a complex factor), O2-concentration and the type of sediment. At 3 stations (GIK01058, GIK01074 and GIK01204) species of the shallow water association were found together with a few bathyal species. These stations are situated at the outer Biaban shelf, in an area where the bottom water of the Persian Gulf flows down the slope towards the Oman Gulf. Several samples of the Zone B in the major part of the Persian Gulf show also a high species diversity containing a high percentage of subfossil ostracode carapaces. It is probable that the recent biocoenosis has been mixed with a late quarternary thanatocoenosis.

Oligocene to Pleistocene bathyal benthic foraminifers at Broken Ridge (Site 754) and Ninetyeast Ridge (Site 756), eastern Indian Ocean, were investigated for then- stratigraphic distribution and their response to paleoceanographic changes. Q-mode factor analysis was applied to relative abundance data of the most abundant benthic foraminifers. At Site 754, seven varimax assemblages were recognized from the upper Oligocene to the Pleistocene: the Gyroidina orbicularis-Rectuvigerina striata Assemblage in the uppermost Oligocene; the Lenticulina spp. Assemblage in the upper Oligocene to lower Miocene, and in lower Miocene to lowermost middle Miocene; the Burseolina cf. pacifica-Cibicidoides mundulus Assemblage in the lower Miocene; the Planulina wuellerstorfi Assemblage in the upper middle Miocene; the Globocassidulina spp. Assemblage in the upper Miocene; the Gavelinopsis lobatulus-Uvigerina proboscidea Assemblage in the Pliocene; and the Ehrenbergina spp. Assemblage in the Pleistocene. The major faunal changes are complex, but exist between the Lenticulina spp. Assemblage and the P. wuellerstorfi Assemblage at ~13.8 Ma, and between the Ehrenbergina spp. Assemblage and the G. lobatulus Assemblage at ~5 Ma. The development of the P. wuellerstorfi and Globocassidulina spp. Assemblages after 13.8 Ma is correlated with the decrease in temperature of the intermediate waters of the ocean, in turn related to Antarctic glacial expansion. The faunal changes at ~5 Ma are related to the development of low oxygen intermediate water, formed in the presence of a strong thermocline. At Site 756, six varimax assemblages are distributed as follows: the Cibicidoides cf. mundulus-Oridorsalis umbonatus Assemblage in the lower Oligocene; the Epistominella umbonifera-Cibicidoides mundulus Assemblage from the upper Oligocene to the lower Miocene; the Cibicidoides mundulus-Burseolinapacifica Assemblage from lower Miocene to the lower middle Miocene; the Globocassidulina spp. Assemblage from the upper lower Miocene to the Pliocene; the Uvigerina proboscidea Assemblage in the upper Miocene and the Pliocene; and the Globocassidulina sp. D Assemblage in the Pliocene. The main faunal change at this site is between the E. umbonifera Assemblage and the Globocassidulina spp. Assemblage, at ~17.1 Ma. The timing of this faunal change is coeval with faunal changes in the North Atlantic and the Pacific. The change is related to a change in bottom water characteristics caused by an increased influence of carbonate corrosive water from the Antarctic source region, and a change in surface productivity. A low oxygen event at Site 756, which started at about 7.3 Ma, occurred about 2.3 m.y. before that at Site 754. The different response to global paleoceanographic changes is not yet explained, but may be due to the difference of marine topography and the degree of upwelling
