High melt strength polypropylene (HMSPP) was synthesized by in situ heat induction reaction, in which pure polypropylene (PP) powders without any additives were used as a basic resin and vinyl trimethoxysilane (VTMS) as a grafting and crosslinking agent. The grafting reaction of VTMS with PP was confirmed by FTIR. The structure and properties of HMSPP were characterized by means of various measurements. The content of grafted silane played a key role on the melt strength and melt flow rate (MFR) of HMSPP. With increasing the content of grafted silane, the melt strength of HMSPP increased, and the MFR reduced. In addition, due to the existence of cross-linking structure, the thermal stability and tensile strength of HMSPP were improved compared with PP.

Management of nanopowder and reactive plasma parameters in a low-pressure RF glow discharge in silane is studied. It is shown that the discharge control parameters and reactor volume can be adjusted to ensure lower abundance of nanopowders, which is one of the requirements of the plasma-assisted fabrication of low-dimensional quantum nanostructures. The results are relevant to micro- and nanomanufacturing technologies employing low-pressure glow discharge plasmas of silane-based gas mixtures.

Reactions of tetrahalosilanes [SiX4 (X= F, Cl or Br)] and silane (SiH4) with sulphur trioxide (SO3) have been studied under different experimental conditions. Each of the silanes behaves differently in accordance with the bond energy of the Si—X bond. While SiF4 remains unreactive even at 600°C, SiCl4 reacts with SO3 at 500°C giving rise to hexachlorodisiloxane [(SiCl3)2O] as the major product. In contrast SiBr4 and SiH4 react with SO3 at room temperature and below room temperature, respectively, yielding silica as one of the products of reaction. In all cases the SO3 is reduced to sulphur dioxide.

Silane undergoes thermal decomposition on the surface of “phosphorus pentoxide” ( P4O10) into its elements around 200–400°C. The hydrogen formed partially reduces the P4O10 forming lower oxides of phosphorus and water. Elemental silicon is precipitated as reddish-brown solid, which is separated by dissolving out the phosphorus oxides. Silica and disiloxane are not formed in the reaction.

Highly uniform, stable nanobimetallic dispersions are prepared in a single si ep in the form of sols, gels, and monoliths, using organically modified silicates as the matrix and the stabilizer. The Pt-Pd bimetallic dispersions are characterized by W-vis, TEM, SEM, and XRD measurements. The evolution of silicate was followed by IR spectroscopy. XPS and CO adsorption studies reveal that the structure of the particles consists of a palladium core and a platinum shell. Electrocatalysis of ascorbic acid oxidation has been demonstrated using thin films of silicate containing the nanobimetal particles on a glassy carbon electrode.

Tris(dicyclohexylamino)silane. (DCA)3SiH. is prepared by the reaction of trichlorosilane with dicyclohexylamine. This is found to undergo transamination reactions with other secondary amines (R2NH). such as pyrrolidine, piperidine, hexamethyleneimine. morpholine. N-methylpiperazine and diethylamine to yield mixed tri(amino)silanes of the formula (DCA)(R2N)2SiH in quantitative yields. These new derivatives are found to be moisture sensitive and hydrolyze to yield their respective amines, hydrogen and silica. They are found to be stable in an inert atmosphere. They have been characterized by IR, NMR (H-1, Si-29), mass spectroscopy and CHN analysis. N-15 NMR for one of the compounds has been done.

Biodegradable composites comprising of modified starch and modified nanoclay have been prepared. Starch has been modified by esterification and subsequently crosslinked. The thermal, mechanical, and biodegradation characteristics of the composites have been investigated. The compressive properties of the composites with the addition of nanoclay were twice that of crosslinked starch phthalate without addition of nanoclay. Predictive theories were used to analyze the obtained experimental results. SEM studies on fracture morphology indicated quasi-brittle fracture. Flexural properties showed considerable improvement due to nanoclay addition. The water uptake increased up to 6% nanoclay, beyond which the uptake decreased. Biodegradation studies showed an initial time lag prior to the onset of degradation.

In this work, a hybrid-polymer nanocomposite film, based on polyvinyl butyral/amino-silane functionalized nano alumina, was fabricated by melt processing. The calcium degradation measurements suggest the functionalized nanocomposite films exhibit higher resistance towards moisture penetration as compared to the neat alumina loaded films. Thermal stability, mechanical strength, and contact angle studies of the composites were also conducted to evaluate the performance of the functionalized alumina loaded films. These nanocomposite films were encapsulated over Al/P3HT/ITO Schottky structured device. The changes observed in the current density of the devices to the applied voltage before and after accelerated aging conditions are presented. The nanocomposite with functionalized alumina films exhibits 50% change in current density, which is superior to that attained with neat and non-functionalized films. POLYM. Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films have been deposited from silane using a novel photo-enhanced decomposition technique. The system comprises a hydrogen discharge lamp contained within the reaction vessel; this unified approach allows high energy photon excitation of the silane molecules without absorption by window materials or the need for mercury sensitisation. The film growth rates (exceeding 4 Angstrom/s) and material properties obtained are comparable to those of films produced by plasma-enhanced CVD techniques. The reduction of energetic charged particles in the film growth region should enable the fabrication of cleaner semiconductor/insulator interfaces in thin-film transistors.

This paper reports on the preparation and characterization of hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide films prepared by H-2 diluted silane-methane plasma. Carbon-rich a-SiC:H film with band gap of up to 3.3 eV has been achieved. IR and UV Vis spectra were employed to characterize the chemical bonding and optical properties of as-prepared films. It is shown that hydrogen dilution is crucial in obtaining these wide band gap carbon-rich films. Raman and PL measurements were performed to probe the microstructure and photoelectronic properties of these films before and after annealing. Films with intermediate carbon concentration seem more defective and exhibit stronger photoluminescence and subband absorption than others. Films with different compositions exhibit different annealing behaviours. For silicon rich and carbon rich films, high temperature annealing results in the formation of silicon crystallites and graphite clusters, respectively. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
