Cardiothoracic ratio and vertebral heart size (VHS) to standardize the heart size of the tufted capuchin (Cebus apella Linnaeus, 1758) in computerized radiographic images

Abstract: The VHS and CTR were assessed using computerized thoracic radiographs of ten clinically healthy tufted capuchin monkeys (five males and five females) from the Wild Animal Screening Center in São Luís (Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres de São Luís-MA-CETAS). Radiographs were taken in laterolateral and dorsoventral projections to calculate the cardiothoracic ratio (VHS) and vertebral heart size (CTR). The VHS showed mean values of 9.34±0.32v (males) and 9.16±0.34v (females) and there was no statistical difference between males and females (p>0.05). The CTR showed mean values of 0.55±0.04 (males) and 0.52±0.03 (females) and there was no statistical difference between the sexes (p>0.05). There was positive correlation between VHS and CTR (r=0.78). The thoracic and heart diameters showed mean values of 5.70±0.48cm and 2.16±0.40cm in the males, respectively. In the females they measured 5.32±0.39cm and 2.94±0.32cm. There was no statistical difference between the sexes. Our results show that the high correlation found between VHS and CTR permitted the verification with similar clinical precision between the two methods to estimate alterations in the heart silhouette by radiographic examination of tufted capuchin, making it an easy technique to apply that can be considered in the investigation of heart problems for this wild species.

Mensuração das dimensões cardíacas pelo método VHS (Vertebral Heart Size) em cães

It is imortant to be able to evaluate the cardiact size . In 1995, was proposed by Buchanan and Bücheler a new way to measure the dimensions of the cardiac silhouette. This study aims to gather several studies of the cardiac dimensions by VHS method in the right lateral recumbency of of different breeds of dogs in a single work, facilitating the assess to information. Deep chest breeds have a smaller mean VHS value than the barrel chest breeds, showing that there is a variation of the VHS values acoording to the thoracic conformation of each breed, which indicates that there is a need to recognize the specific VHS values according to the breed standard to not to interpret the cardiac measurement in a wrong way through not compatible reference values for the animal. There is the individual variation that should be taken into accont at the time of measurement. The VHS is a helper method to a radiographic evaluation of the heart, and the ultrasonography remains the gold standard for the evaluation of the cardiac chambers and other changes of the heart

Analisi palinsestuale e pubblicitaria dei contenuti televisivi ritrovati nei volumi in VHS dell'archivio della videoteca del DAR

L'oggetto del mio studio sono i contenuti televisivi (pubblicità, programmi, promozioni televisive) che accompagnano i film archiviati nelle videocassette contenute nell'archivio della videoteca del Dipartimento delle Arti. Una prima fase del lavoro, di natura pratica, mi ha fisicamente portato in videoteca per studiare un campione di più di 2500 videocassette in poco più di un mese e raccogliere dati relativi a quali contenuti di natura televisiva vi si presentassero insieme al film archiviato. Ho visionato e censito, con la supervisione del dott. Gianmario Merizzi, circa 1800 cassette VHS, corrispondenti alla filmografia italiana e francese, raccolte e registrate in un periodo compreso tra gli anni '80 e i primi 2000. Dopo aver raccolto tutte le informazioni utili, ho eseguito un'analisi palinsestuale e pubblicitaria su un campione ridotto di 7 videocassette scelte secondo criteri ben precisi. L'analisi palinsestuale, con il supporto del correlatore, il prof. Luca Barra, ha rivelato i cambiamenti delle strategie di programmazione messe in atto dalle reti in risposta ai cambiamenti normativi, tecnologici e competitivi che hanno segnato la TV italiana negli anni '80 e '90; L'analisi pubblicitaria ha preso in esame i 25 messaggi pubblicitari contenuti nei 7 volumi approfonditi, descrivendone le dinamiche sia del messaggio pubblicitario stesso, sia di come questo si contestualizza all'interno della programmazione televisiva. Infine, ho dedicato un capitolo al valore archivistico dei contenuti della videoteca, raccogliendo le testimonianze del dott. Gianmario Merizzi e della dott.ssa Michela Giorgi, i quali mi hanno aiutato a ricostruire i momenti salienti della costituzione dell'archivio e a riflettere sul futuro incerto che questi servizi oggi affrontano, in un presente sempre più virtuale e ipermediato.

Relationship between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis and the effect of non-surgical periodontal treatment

This study analyzed the association of periodontal disease (PD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Seventy-five 35-60-year-old patients were assigned to 5 groups according to the presence (+) or not (-) of PD and RA and the treatment received (TR+) or not (TR-) for PD. Group 3 uses total prosthesis (TP). Clinical and laboratory evaluations were performed at baseline, 3 and 6 months of follow-up by probing pocket depth, bleeding on probing and plaque index for PD, HAQ, DAS28, SF-36 and laboratory: AAG, ESR, CRP for RA. Statistically significant differences for PD after 3 (p=0.0055) and after 6 months (p=0.0066) were obtained in Group 1 (RA+PD+TR+) and 2(RA+PD+TR-); significant reduction in the % of BOP after 6 months (p=0.0128) and significant reduction in the % of Pl after 3 (p=0.0128) and 6 months (p=0.0002) in Group 1. Statistically significant differences between Groups 1 and 3 (RA+TP) for DAS28 at baseline and after 3 months were observed, but not after 6 months. No other parameters for RA were significantly affected. The relationship between RA and PD disease activities is not clear, but the importance of periodontal treatment in the control of inflammation to avoid tooth extraction is evident.

Accuracy and cost- and time-effectiveness of digital clip versus videotape interpretation of echocardiograms in patients with valvular disease

Background. Although digital and videotaped images are known to be comparable for the evaluation of left ventricular function, their relative accuracy for assessment of more complex anatomy is unclear. We sought to compare reading time, storage costs, and concordance of video and digital interpretations across multiple observers and sites. Methods. One hundred one patients with valvular (90 mitral, 48 aortic, 80 tricuspid) disease were selected prospectively, and studies were stored according to video and standardized digital protocols. The same reviewer interpreted video and digital images independently and at different times with the use of a standard report form to evaluate 40 items (eg, severity of stenosis or regurgitation, leaflet thickening, and calcification) as normal or mildly, moderately, or severely abnormal Concordance between modalities was expressed at kappa Major discordance (difference of >1 level of severity) was ascribed to the modality that gave the lesser severity. CD-ROM was used to store digital data (20:1 lossy compression), and super-VHS video-tape was used to store video data The reading time and storage costs for each modality were compared Results. Measured parameters were highly concordant (ejection fraction was 52% +/- 13% by both). Major discordance was rare, and lesser values were reported with digital rather than video interpretation in the categories of aortic and mitral valve thicken ing (1% to 2%) and severity of mitral regurgitation (2%). Digital reading time was 6.8 +/- 2.4 minutes, 38% shorter than with video (11.0 +/- 3.0, range 8 to 22 minutes, P < .001). Compressed digital studies had an average size of 60 <plus/minus> 14 megabytes (range 26 to 96 megabytes). Storage cost for video was A$0.62 per patient (18 studies per tape, total cost A$11.20), compared with A$0.31 per patient for digital storage (8 studies per CD-ROM, total cost A$2.50). Conclusion. Digital and video interpretation were highly concordant; in the few cases of major discordance, the digital scores were lower, perhaps reflecting undersampling. Use of additional views and longer clips may be indicated to minimize discordance with video in patients with complex problems. Digital interpretation offers a significant reduction in reading times and the cost of archiving.

Provas de atividade inflamatória no pênfigo foliáceo endêmico

O pênfigo foliáceo endêmico (PFE) é uma afecção onde fenômenos auto-imunes são freqüentemente relacionados com sua patogênese. Abordaram-se neste estudo, alguns testes laboratoriais freqüentemente alterados em outras doenças auto-imunes. Foram estudados em 20 pacientes com PFE a presença ou alterações de fator antinúcleo (FAN), fator reumatóide (FR), proteína C-reativa (PCR), velocidade de hemossedimentação (VHS), eletroforese de proteínas e o número totalde leucócitos. Encontrou-se PCR positiva em mais de 65 % dos casos, leucocitose moderada na maioria dos pacientes, VHS aumentada e alterações discretas da análise de proteínas do sangue. O FAN e o FR apresentaram-se negativos em todos os casos. Embora estes exames sejam considerados inespecíficos, o seu estudo associado ao quadro clínico pode colaborar no acompanhamento do PFE.
