La llegada de las tecnologías de la información, y su uso cada vez mayor y generalizado que se está haciendo de ellas, ha permitido para que una nueva situación aparezca que, a su vez, ha originado - de hecho, que ha precipitado - una serie de cambios de gran importancia en todos los niveles, pero especialmente en los niveles sociales, económicos y culturales. Este nueva escena ha tenido una gran influencia en el entorno pedagógico. De hecho, la aparición de nuevos modelos educativos como resultado de este cambio ha estado sucediendo de una manera continuada e ininterrumpida durante la década pasada. Estos cambios recientes en los sistemas actuales de enseñanza y de aprendizaje han significado un aumento y un cambio en el tipo de demandas hechas desde las bibliotecas y los centros de documentación.

With the success of Web 2.0 we are witnessing a growing number of services and APIs exposed by Telecom, IT and content providers. Targeting the Web community and, in particular, Web application developers, service providers expose capabilities of their infrastructures and applications in order to open new markets and to reach new customer groups. However, due to the complexity of the underlying technologies, the last step, i.e., the consumption and integration of the offered services, is a non-trivial and time-consuming task that is still a prerogative of expert developers. Although many approaches to lower the entry barriers for end users exist, little success has been achieved so far. In this paper, we introduce the OMELETTE project and show how it addresses end-user-oriented telco mashup development. We present the goals of the project, describe its contributions, summarize current results, and describe current and future work.

Today, many organizations are turning to new approaches to building and maintaining information systems (I/S) to cope with a highly competitive business environment. Current anecdotal evidence indicates that the approaches being used improve the effectiveness of software development by encouraging active user participation throughout the development process. Unfortunately, very little is known about how the use of such approaches enhances the ability of team members to develop I/S that are responsive to changing business conditions.^ Drawing from predominant theories of organizational conflict, this study develops and tests a model of conflict among members of a development team. The model proposes that development approaches provide the relevant context conditioning the management and resolution of conflict in software development which, in turn, are crucial for the success of the development process.^ Empirical testing of the model was conducted using data collected through a combination of interviews with I/S executives and surveys of team members and business users at nine organizations. Results of path analysis provide support for the model's main prediction that integrative conflict management and distributive conflict management can contribute to I/S success by influencing differently the manifestation and resolution of conflict in software development. Further, analyses of variance indicate that object-oriented development, when compared to rapid and structured development, appears to produce the lowest levels of conflict management, conflict resolution, and I/S success.^ The proposed model and findings suggest academic implications for understanding the effects of different conflict management behaviors on software development outcomes, and practical implications for better managing the software development process, especially in user-oriented development environments. ^

Incremental parsing has long been recognized as a technique of great utility in the construction of language-based editors, and correspondingly, the area currently enjoys a mature theory. Unfortunately, many practical considerations have been largely overlooked in previously published algorithms. Many user requirements for an editing system necessarily impact on the design of its incremental parser, but most approaches focus only on one: response time. This paper details an incremental parser based on LR parsing techniques and designed for use in a modeless syntax recognition editor. The nature of this editor places significant demands on the structure and quality of the document representation it uses, and hence, on the parser. The strategy presented here is novel in that both the parser and the representation it constructs are tolerant of the inevitable and frequent syntax errors that arise during editing. This is achieved by a method that differs from conventional error repair techniques, and that is more appropriate for use in an interactive context. Furthermore, the parser aims to minimize disturbance to this representation, not only to ensure other system components can operate incrementally, but also to avoid unfortunate consequences for certain user-oriented services. The algorithm is augmented with a limited form of predictive tree-building, and a technique is presented for the determination of valid symbols for menu-based insertion. Self-adaptive software provides a profound solution for adapting applications to changing contexts in dynamic and heterogeneous environments. Having emerged from Autonomic Computing, it incorporates fully autonomous decision making based on predefined structural and behavioural models. The most common approach for architectural runtime adaptation is the MAPE-K adaptation loop implementing an external adaptation manager without manual user control. However, it has turned out that adaptation behaviour lacks acceptance if it does not correspond to a user’s expectations – particularly for Ubiquitous Computing scenarios with user interaction. Adaptations can be irritating and distracting if they are not appropriate for a certain situation. In general, uncertainty during development and at run-time causes problems with users being outside the adaptation loop. In a literature study, we analyse publications about self-adaptive software research. The results show a discrepancy between the motivated application domains, the maturity of examples, and the quality of evaluations on the one hand and the provided solutions on the other hand. Only few publications analysed the impact of their work on the user, but many employ user-oriented examples for motivation and demonstration. To incorporate the user within the adaptation loop and to deal with uncertainty, our proposed solutions enable user participation for interactive selfadaptive software while at the same time maintaining the benefits of intelligent autonomous behaviour. We define three dimensions of user participation, namely temporal, behavioural, and structural user participation. This dissertation contributes solutions for user participation in the temporal and behavioural dimension. The temporal dimension addresses the moment of adaptation which is classically determined by the self-adaptive system. We provide mechanisms allowing users to influence or to define the moment of adaptation. With our solution, users can have full control over the moment of adaptation or the self-adaptive software considers the user’s situation more appropriately. The behavioural dimension addresses the actual adaptation logic and the resulting run-time behaviour. Application behaviour is established during development and does not necessarily match the run-time expectations. Our contributions are three distinct solutions which allow users to make changes to the application’s runtime behaviour: dynamic utility functions, fuzzy-based reasoning, and learning-based reasoning. The foundation of our work is a notification and feedback solution that improves intelligibility and controllability of self-adaptive applications by implementing a bi-directional communication between self-adaptive software and the user. The different mechanisms from the temporal and behavioural participation dimension require the notification and feedback solution to inform users on adaptation actions and to provide a mechanism to influence adaptations. Case studies show the feasibility of the developed solutions. Moreover, an extensive user study with 62 participants was conducted to evaluate the impact of notifications before and after adaptations. Although the study revealed that there is no preference for a particular notification design, participants clearly appreciated intelligibility and controllability over autonomous adaptations.

Esta dissertação descreve o estudo do controlo e da monitorização de um sistema de autopull, bem como o estudo da implementação de um destes sistemasnuma área de negócio. Inicialmente, de modo a percecionar as melhores opções a tomar para a realização deste projeto foram estudadas duas redes de comunicação locais, redes Ethernet e redes CAN, tendo-se optado pelas redes Ethernet, sendo as razões que determinaram esta escolha explanadas no desenvolvimento do relatório. Após ter sido selecionada a rede que foi utilizada, foram estudados os requisitos do sistema e procuradas no mercado soluções que os satisfaçam. Para a comunicação em tempo real foram utilizadas Web Sockets e para a utilização destas,foi necessário um servidor de Web Sockets, tendo a escolha recaídosobre onodejs. Posteriormente, foi elaborada uma interface gráfica que permitiu a criação de um sistema inteligente que auxilia os clientes do espaço a efetuarem pedidos bem como a chamarem os funcionários, não necessitando de passar os longos tempos de espera que normalmenteestão associados a estes espaços. Posto isto, foi realizado um website que deverá apresentar o espaço, os próximos eventos a realizar e outras informações importantes. Este sistema torna-se uma mais-valia para a divulgação da tecnologia implementada e para a divulgação dos espaços que eventualmente venham a adotar um sistema análogo. De seguida foi efetuado um plano de negócios, simulando um espaço físico que eventualmente implementasse esta tecnologia. Para tal, foi estudada a envolvente externa e interna em que este negócio estaria inserido, as políticas de marketing que deveriam ser seguidas e ainda um plano financeiro que descrevesse o investimento, as vendas esperadas e todos os restantes componentes económicos do projeto. Por último foram tecidas as principais conclusões inerentes ao projeto desenvolvido e analisadas as possibilidades de melhorias futuras.

Physical and physiological comfort, at work and during leisure time, is important to human health and motivation. A growing number of jobs require workers to sit. Most clothes, except those intended for wheelchair users, were designed for walking or the standing position. Clothing designs should be user-oriented and meet users’ needs. Garment design should conform to body position and posture, not just shape and size. In this paper we present the ergometric impact of a new type of trousers designed to adapt to changes in position. Concentrations of compression forces, temperature and pressure were documented in an exploratory pilot study and contrasted to traditional designs. The new trousers showed significant decreases in compression force concentration, especially in and around the knees and waist. Most participants identified comfort as an important factor when purchasing a pair of trousers and that, for working purposes, they would prefer these special trousers rather than traditional designs.

El projecte que es presenta en aquesta memòria té com a objectiu el disseny d'una aplicació agenda amb tècniques orientades a l'usuari (Disseny Centrat en l'Usuari). Seguint aquestes metodologies es pretén dissenyar una agenda que aconsegueixi un grau de satisfacció alt per part dels usuaris, una part dels quals té unes habilitats cognitives especials, i un gestor d'agendes que agilitzi la coordinació als professionals de suport que treballen diàriament amb ells. L'objectiu final de les dues aplicacions és el mateix: millorar el benestar dels usuaris.

Työn tavoitteena oli löytää koivua jalostavan saha-aihiolaitoksen tuotannon keskeisimmät ongelma-alueet ja kehityskohteet. Työssä selvitettiin laajasti koivunjalostukseen liittyvää problematiikkaa kirjallisuuden ja oman havainnoinnin avulla. Koivuraaka-aineen käytön lisäämiselle on olemassa hyvät mahdollisuudet. Suurimmat ongelmat koivu-raaka-aineen käytössä ovat tukkien saatavuus ja laatu, jotka aiheuttavat suuria ongelmia koivua jalostavalle teollisuudelle. Osaprojektina työssä pyrittiin löytämään kohdeyritykselle jokapäiväiseen käyttöön soveltuvat tuottavuuden tunnusluvut. Työssä käsiteltävät tunnusluvut valittiin yrityksen omistajan asettamien tavoitteiden pohjalta. Erilaisia tuottavuuden tunnuslukuja voidaan laskea kirjallisuuden perusteella runsaasti, mutta kohtuullisen tunnuslukumaaran hallinta on pk-yrityksessa resurssien sanelema valinta. Pk-yrityksille valmistetut taloushallinto-ohjelmat antavat hyvät perustyökalut raportointiin ja niistä saatava informaatio on helposti muutettavissa tunnusluvuiksi

El projecte està basat en la creació d'una aplicació per dispositius mòbils android i que fent servir l'ús del micròfon capturi el so que genera l'usuari i pugui determinar si s'està respirant i en quin punt de la respiració es troba l'usuari. S'ha dut a terme una filosofia de disseny orientada a l'usuari (DCU) de manera que el primer pas ha sigut realitzar un prototip i un 'sketch'. A continuació, s'han realitzat 10 aplicacions test i en cadascuna d'elles s'ha ampliat la funcionalitat fins a arribar a obtenir una aplicació base que s'aproxima al disseny inicial generat per mitjà del prototip. El més important dels dissenys algorísmics que s'han realitzat per la aplicació es la capacitat de processar el senyal en temps real, ja que fins i tot s'ha pogut aplicar la transformada ràpida de Fourier (FFT) en temps real sense que el rendiment de l'aplicació es veies afectat. Això ha sigut possible gràcies al disseny del processament amb doble buffer i amb un fil d'execució dedicat independent del fil principal d'execució del programa 'UI Thread'

For the past two decades the music digitalization has been considered the most significant phenomenon in the music industry as the physical sales have been decreasing rapidly. The advancement of the digital technology and the internet have facilitated the digitalization in the music industry and affected all stages of the music value chain, namely music creation, distribution and consumption. The newly created consumer culture has led to the establishment of novel business models such as music subscriptions and à-la-carte downloads websites and live streaming. The dynamic digital environment has presented the music industry stakeholders with the challenge to adapt to the requirements of the constantly changing modern consumers’ needs and demands. The purpose of this study was to identify how music digitalization can influence change in the Finnish music industry value chain; i.e. how digitalization affects the music industry stakeholders, their functions and inter-relatedness and how the stakeholders are able to react to the changes in the industry. The study was conducted as a qualitative research based entirely on primary data in the form of semi-structured interviews with experts from different units of the Finnish music industry value chain. Since the study offers assessment of diverse viewpoints on the value chain, it further provides an integrated picture of the Finnish music industry current situation and its competitive environment. The results suggest that the music industry is currently in a turbulent stage of experimentation with new business models and digital innovations. However, at this point it is impossible to determine which business model will be approved by the consumers in the longer run. Nevertheless, the study confirmed the claim that consumption of music in its digital form is to become dominant over the traditional physical copies sales in the nearest future. As a result the music industry is becoming more user-oriented; that is the focus is shifting from music production towards artist branding and management and visibility to the audience. Furthermore, the music industry is undergoing the process of integration with other industries such as media, social networks, internet services providers and mobile phone manufacturers in order to better fulfill the consumers’ needs. The previously underrated live music and merchandising are also increasing their significance for the revenues in the stagnant music markets. Therefore, the music industry is developing at present towards becoming an integrated entertainment industry deeply penetrating every point of modern people’s leisure activities.

Työn tavoitteena on kehittää elektroniikka-alalla toimivan mittalaitteita valmistavan yrityksen projektivalmistuksen tiedonkulkua. Projektivalmistuksen tietovirrat halutaan keskittää sidosryhmille yhteiseen järjestelmään. Keskittämisen mahdollistamiseksi tutkimuksessa selvitetään ensin sidosryhmien tarpeet yhteiselle järjestelmälle, jonka jälkeen olemassa olevasta järjestelmästä kehitetään löydettyjä tarpeita vastaava. Tutkimuksen taustatiedoksi syvennytään kirjallisuudessa esitettyihin ohjeisiin informaatiosysteemin kehitysprojekteista, projektin onnistumiseen vaikuttavista seikoista ja asiakaslähtöisestä kehittämisestä. Avainasemassa tutkimuksen kehitysprojektin onnistumisessa on käyttäjien tarpeiden huomiointi järjestelmän kehityksessä. Tästä syystä tutkimus toteutettiin toimintatutkimuksena, jolloin päästiin mahdollisimman syvälle kohdeorganisaation tarpeisiin. Tutkimuksen tuloksena projektivalmistuksen hallintajärjestelmä kehitettiin vastaamaan käyttäjiensä tarpeita ja tietovirrat keskitettiin järjestelmään. Yhteinen järjestelmä paransi tiedon laatua, poisti päällekkäisiä töitä sekä tarjoaa paremman näkyvyyden projektivalmistukseen. Näkyvyyden lisääntymisen myötä myös projektivalmistuksen jatkokehitys helpottuu.

The ISO norm line 9241 states some criteria for ergonomics of human system interaction. In markets with a huge variety of offers and little possibility of differentiation, providers can gain a decisive competitive advantage by user oriented interfaces. A precondition for this is that relevant information can be obtained for entrepreneurial decisions in this regard. To test how users of universal search result pages use those pages and pay attention to different elements, an eye tracking experiment with a mixed design has been developed. Twenty subjects were confronted with search engine result pages (SERPs) and were instructed to make a decision while conditions “national vs. international city” and “with vs. without miniaturized Google map” were used. Different parameters like fixation count, duration and time to first fixation were computed from the eye tracking raw data and supplemented by click rate data as well as data from questionnaires. Results of this pilot study revealed some remarkable facts like a vampire effect on miniaturized Google maps. Furthermore, Google maps did not shorten the process of decision making, Google ads were not fixated, visual attention on SERPs was influenced by position of the elements on the SERP and by the users’ familiarity with the search target. These results support the theory of Amount of Invested Mental Effort (AIME) and give providers empirical evidence to take users’ expectations into account. Furthermore, the results indicated that the task oriented goal mode of participants was a moderator for the attention spent on ads. Most important, SERPs with images attracted the viewers’ attention much longer than those without images. This unique selling proposition may lead to a distortion of competition on markets.

An automatic image processing and analysis technique has been developed for quantitative characterization of multi-phase materials. For the development of this technique is used the Khoros system that offers the basic morphological tools and a flexible, visual programming language. These techniques are implemented in a highly user oriented image processing environment that allows the user to adapt each step of the processing to his special requirements.To illustrate the implementation and performance of this technique, images of two different materials are processed for microstructure characterization. The result is presented through the determination of volume fraction of the different phases or precipitates.
