A combination of numerical and analytical techniques is used to analyse the effect of magnetic field and encapsulated layer on the onset of oscillatory Marangoni instability in a two layer system. Oscillatory Marangoni instability is possible for a deformed free surface only when the system is heated from above. It is observed that the existence of a second layer has a positive effect on Marangoni overstability with magnetic field whereas it has an opposite effect without magnetic field.

The magnetic damping effect of the non-uniform magnetic field on the floating-zone crystal growth process in microgravity is studied by numerical simulation. The results show that the non-uniform magnetic field with designed configuration can effectively reduce the flow near the free surface and then in the melt zone. At the same time, the designed magnetic field can improve the impurity concentration non-uniformity along the solidification interface. The primary principles of the magnetic field configuration design are also discussed.

A unified view on the interfacial instability in a model of aluminium reduction cells in the presence of a uniform, vertical, background magnetic field is presented. The classification of instability modes is based on the asymptotic theory for high values of parameter β, which characterises the ratio of the Lorentz force based on the disturbance current, and gravity. It is shown that the spectrum of the travelling waves consists of two parts independent of the horizontal cross-section of the cell: highly unstable wall modes and stable or weakly unstable centre, or Sele’s modes. The wall modes with the disturbance of the interface being localised at the sidewalls of the cell dominate the dynamics of instability. Sele’s modes are characterised by a distributed disturbance over the whole horizontal extent of the cell. As β increases these modes are stabilized by the field.

An electrospray source has been developed using a novel new fluid that is both magnetic and conductive. Unlike conventional electrospray sources that required microfabricated structures to support the fluid to be electrosprayed, this new electrospray fluid utilizes the Rosensweig instability to create the structures in the magnetic fluid when an external magnetic field was applied. Application of an external electric field caused these magnetic fluid structures to spray. These fluid based structures were found to spray at a lower onset voltage than was predicted for electrospray sources with solid structures of similar geometry. These fluid based structures were also found to be resilient to damage, unlike the solid structures found in traditional electrospray sources. Further, experimental studies of magnetic fluids in non-uniform magnetic fields were conducted. The modes of Rosensweig instabilities have been studied in-depth when created by uniform magnetic fields, but little to no studies have been performed on Rosensweig instabilities formed due to non-uniform magnetic fields. The measured spacing of the cone-like structures of ferrofluid, in a non-uniform magnetic field, were found to agree with a proposed theoretical model.

Oscillatory flow in a tube of slowly varying cross section is investigated in the presence of a uniform magnetic field in the axial direction. A perturbation solution including steady streaming is presented. The pressure and shear stress on the wall for various parameters governing the flow are discussed. We have calculated the binding energy of a hydrogenic donor in a quantum well with potential shape proportional to \z\(2/3) as a function of the width of the quantum well and the barrier height under an applied uniform magnetic field along the a axis. As the well width decreases, the binding energy increases initially up to a critical well width (which is nearly the same for all magnetic fields) at which there is a turnover. The results are qualitatively similar to those of a hydrogenic donor in a rectangular well. We have also calculated [rho(2)](1/2) and [z(2)](1/2) for the donor electron. [rho(2)](1/2) is found to be strongly dependent on the magnetic field for a given well width and weakly dependent on the well width and the barrier height, for a given value of magnetic field [z(2)](1/2) is weakly dependent on the applied magnetic field. The probability of finding the donor electron inside the well shows a rapid decrease as the well width is reduced at nearly the well width at which the binding energy shows a maximum.

We consider unforced, statistically-axisymmetric turbulence evolving in the presence of a background rotation, an imposed stratification, or a uniform magnetic field. We focus on two canonical cases: Saffman turbulence, in which E(κ → 0) ∼ κ 2, and Batchelor turbulence, in which E(κ → 0) ∼ κ 4. It has recently been shown that, provided the large scales evolve in a self-similar manner, then u ⊥ 2ℓ ⊥ 2ℓ // = constant in Saffman turbulence and u ⊥ 2ℓ ⊥ 4ℓ // = constant in Batchelor turbulence (Davidson, 2009, 2010). Here the subscripts ⊥ and // indicate directions perpendicular and parallel to the axis of symmetry, and ℓ ⊥, ℓ //, and u ⊥ are suitably defined integral scales. These constraints on the integral scales allow us to make simple, testable predictions for the temporal evolution of ℓ ⊥, ℓ //, and u ⊥ in rotating, stratified and MHD turbulence.

The electronic state of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in the presence of a perpendicular uniform magnetic field and a lateral superlattice (LS) is investigated theoretically. A comparative study is made between a LS induced by a spatial electrostatic potential modulation (referred to as a PMLS) and that induced by a spatial magnetic-field modulation (referred ro asa MMLS). By utilizing a finite-temperature self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation scheme; the dependence of the electronic state on different system parameters (e.g., the modulation period, the modulation strength, the effective electron-electron interaction strength, the averaged electron density, and the system temperature) is studied in detail. The inclusion of exchange effect is found to bring qualitative changes to the electronic state of a PMLS, leading generally to a nonuniform spin splitting, and consequently the behavior of the electronic state becomes similar to that of a MMLS. The Landau-level coupling is taken into account, and is found to introduce some interesting features not observed before. It is also found that, even in the regime of intermediate modulation strength, the density dependence of the spin splitting of energy levels, either for a PMLS or a MMLS, can be qualitatively understood within the picture of a 2DES in a perpendicular magnetic field with the modulation viewed as a perturbation. We present a detailed study of the use of a non-parallel, inhomogeneous magnetic field spectrometer for the investigation of laser-accelerated ion beams. Employing a wedged yoke design, we demonstrate the feasibility of an in-situ self-calibration technique of the non-uniform magnetic field and show that high-precision measurements of ion energies are possible in a wide-angle configuration. We also discuss the implications of a stacked detector system for unambiguous identification of different ion species present in the ion beam and explore the feasibility of detection of high energy particles beyond 100 MeV/amu in radiation harsh environments.

A solution to a version of the Stieltjes moment. problem is presented. Using this solution, we construct a family of coherent states of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field. We prove that these states form an overcomplete set that is normalized and resolves the unity. By the help of these coherent states we construct the Fock-Bergmann representation related to the particle quantization. This quantization procedure takes into account a circle topology of the classical motion. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the influence of a background uniform magnetic field and boundary conditions on the vacuum of a quantized charged spinor matter field confined between two parallel neutral plates; the magnetic field is directed orthogonally to the plates. The admissible set of boundary conditions at the plates is determined by the requirement that the Dirac Hamiltonian operator be self-adjoint. It is shown that, in the case of a sufficiently strong magnetic field and a sufficiently large separation of the plates, the generalized Casimir force is repulsive, being independent of the choice of a boundary condition, as well as of the distance between the plates. The detection of this effect seems to be feasible in the foreseeable future.

In this study, magnetohydrodynamic natural convection boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting and viscous incompressible fluid along a heated vertical flat plate with uniform heat and mass flux in the presence of strong cross magnetic field has been investigated. For smooth integrations the boundary layer equations are transformed in to a convenient dimensionless form by using stream function formulation as well as the free variable formulation. The nonsimilar parabolic partial differential equations are integrated numerically for Pr ≪1 that is appropriate for liquid metals against the local Hartmann parameter ξ . Further, asymptotic solutions are obtained near the leading edge using regular perturbation method for smaller values of ξ . Solutions for values of ξ ≫ 1 are also obtained by employing the matched asymptotic technique. The results obtained for small, large and all ξ regimes are examined in terms of shear stress, τw, rate of heat transfer, qw, and rate of mass transfer, mw, for important physical parameter. Attention has been given to the influence of Schmidt number, Sc, buoyancy ratio parameter, N and local Hartmann parameter, ξ on velocity, temperature and concentration distributions and noted that velocity and temperature of the fluid achieve their asymptotic profiles for Sc ≥ 10:0.

In the present note we have studied the harmonic and anharmonic oscillations of cylindrical plasma using Lagrangian formalism. In order to study the harmonic oscillations, the equations are linearized and the resulting equation for the displacement has been numerically solved. For situations present in thermonuclear reactors, the presence of axial magnetic field is found necessary to make the periods of oscillation to become comparable with the time required for the thermonuclear reactions to set in. A detailed analysis of the anharmonic oscillations reveals that the significant interaction is between the first and the second mode. The fundamental period of anharmonic oscillation is more than the corresponding period of harmonic oscillations by 9·2%. Graphs have been drawn for the amplitudes of relative variations in density and magnetic field and of the time-varying part of anharmonic oscillation.
