En Argentina, los primeros ensayos de voto directo en las elecciones internas de los partidos políticos tuvieron lugar en las décadas del treinta y el cuarenta del siglo XX. Con anterioridad, los candidatos eran elegidos por notables que imponían sus decisiones en las convenciones partidarias. En este artículo, se plantea analizar su implementación en Córdoba por la UCR y el Partido Demócrata, a partir de una coyuntura cuya relevancia trascendía los límites provinciales: las últimas elecciones parlamentarias nacionales antes del golpe militar de junio de 1943. La reconstrucción historiográfica muestra sus alcances así como las resistencias a la democratización en ambos partidos.

El presente artículo se enfoca en analizar la relación que existe entre la deserción de los estudios universitarios (durante el primer año cursado) y el comportamiento de ciertas variables específicas, medidas en los ingresantes a la Universidad Siglo 21 en Córdoba, Argentina. La investigación permitió desarrollar dos modelos de predicción del riesgo de abandono entre los estudiantes que ingresan a la universidad. Dichos modelos se denominan IRAP (Índice de Riesgo de Abandono Provisorio) e IRAD (Índice de Riesgo de Abandono Definitivo). Ambos se expresan en escalas de 5 categorías (desde riesgo muy bajo a muy alto). Los dos índices de riesgo se obtienen a partir de la aplicación de una serie de cuestionarios que miden diferentes variables con las cuales se construyen el IRAP y el IRAD. Ambos índices han sido desarrollados con el propósito de contar con herramientas de predicción de la deserción, lo cual permite trabajar sobre la prevención de la misma de modo anticipado. Entre las principales conclusiones que se obtuvieron en la investigación pueden señalarse la relación del rendimiento académico con la deserción y la capacidad predictiva del índice IRAD, dado que se observa que el 44% de los alumnos con riesgo alto y muy alto, no se reinscribieron en el segundo semestre de cursado.

Objective: Standard treatment of locally advanced (stages III and IV A-B) nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) consists in chemoradiotherapy with 5-y survival rates of around 60%. However, acute toxicity prevents the administration of adequate adjuvant chemotherapy in nearly half of the patients. This situation has led to the hypothesis that induction chemotherapy followed by chemoradiotherapy may be a superior approach. Many ongoing studies are testing the role of induction chemotherapy in this setting. Newer radiotherapy techniques are becoming available (intensity modulated radiotherapy [IMRT] and tomotherapy). They can achieve a higher degree of accuracy in conforming the radiation to the planned target volume while sparing normal tissue resulting in less acute and long-term toxicity. Methods: We report here our local experience of 11 consecutive locally advanced NPC patients treated between June 2004 and October 2007. Median age was 46 years (range, 17-65). All but one were male patients. Initial stage was stage III in 5, and stage IVA-B in 6 patients. Treatment consisted of 3 cycles of induction TCF (Docetaxel 75 mg/m2- Cisplatin 75 mg/m2- 5-fluorouracil 750 mg/m2/d 5 days) chemotherapy followed by concomitant chemoradiotherapy with 3 cycles of cisplatin (100 mg/m2), or carboplatin (AUC 5) in case of renal impairment. Radiotherapy was delivered by either IMRT or tomotherapy. Macroscopic disease (tumor + involved lymph nodes) was treated with 70 Gy, 2 Gy/fraction (IMRT), or 69.6 Gy, 1.12 Gy/fraction (simultaneus integrated boost [SIB] technique). Elective nodal irradiation of 46-54 Gy lymph was performed in all patients, whereas elective irradiation of the entire nasopharynx (60 Gy) half of patients. Results: All but one tumor were EBV positive. Induction chemotherapy was done as planned for 8 patients (73%). Two patients had only 2 cycles, 1 patient had only1 cycle of TCF, and the other without docetaxel. Concomitant chemotherapy was given as planned in 7 patients (64%). Four patients had only 2 cycles. Radiotherapy could be delivered as planned in all patients. Eight weeks post treatment all patients proved to have a CR (CR or uCR). After a median follow-up of 11 months (range, 6-38 months) only one patient has relapsed. Details on acute and 1 year toxicities will be presented. Conclusion: Treatment of locally advancedNPC with induction and concomitant chemotherapy is feasible and well tolerated. The use of IMRT or tomotherapy technique seems to ameliorate the therapeutic index particularly in regard with xerostomia. All our patients presented a complete response. For the assessment of survival and long-term toxicity, a longer follow-up period is needed.

The objective of this study was to meet law enforcement needs into the 21st century. The result of the study was NIBRS (National Incident Based Reporting System). Adoption of the NIBRS system took place in the mid 1980’s and Iowa began organizational efforts to implement the system. Conversion to IBR (Incident Based Iowa Uniform Crime Reporting) was completed January 1, 1991, as part of a national effort to implement incident based crime reporting, coordinated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Justice Statistics of the U.S. Department of Justice. Iowa was the fifth state in the nation to be accepted as a certified “reporting state” of incident based crime data to the national system.

The proposal to work on this final project came after several discussions held with Dr. Elzbieta Malinowski Gadja, who in 2008 published the book entitled Advanced Data Warehouse Design: From Conventional to Spatial and Temporal Applications (Data-Centric Systems and Applications). The project was carried out under the technical supervision of Dr. Malinowski and the direct beneficiary was the University of Costa Rica (UCR) where Dr. Malinowski is a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Informatics. The purpose of this project was twofold: First, to translate chapter III of said book with the intention of generating educational material for the use of the UCR and, second, to venture in the field of technical translation related to data warehouse. For the first component, the goal was to generate a final product that would eventually serve as an educational tool for the post-graduate courses of the UCR. For the second component, this project allowed me to acquire new skills and put into practice techniques that have helped me not only to perfom better in my current job as an Assistant Translator of the Inter-American BAnk (IDB), but also to use them in similar projects. The process was lenggthy and required torough research and constant communication with the author. The investigation focused on the search of terms and definitions to prepare the glossary, which was the basis to start the translation project. The translation process itself was carried out by phases, so that comments and corrections by the author could be taken into account in subsequent stages. Later, based on the glossary and the translated text, illustrations had been created in the Visio software were translated. In addition to the technical revision by the author, professor Carme Mangiron was in charge of revising the non-technical text. The result was a high-quality document that is currently used as reference and study material by the Department of Computer Science and Informatics of Costa Rica.

We explored the washout period of creatine (Cr) after repeated ingestions of high doses of exogenous Cr. Ten athletes ingested daily, in a randomized double-blind study design, 30 g of exoge- nous Cr (n = 5, Cr-group) or a placebo (n = 5, Pl-group). Serum and urine samples were collected 1) before supplementation (BEFO- RE), 2) after one week Cr supplementation (AFTER), and 3) one week later without supplementation (LATER). The Cr and crea- tinine (Crn) concentrations in serum (sCr, sCrn) and in multiple spots urine (uCr, uCrn) were measured. We observed a significant rise (p < 0.01) in sCr, uCr and sCrn between BEFORE and AFTER supplementation in Cr-group, as well as a significant difference between Cr-group and Pl-group. Body weight increased signifi- cantly (+1.5 kg), but relative body fat (%fat) was unchanged. After the washout period in LATER Cr-group, sCr and uCr decreased to low residual values. No loss of body weight occurred during thisperiod. In contrast, sCrn and uCrn returned to baseline values. In conclusion, regular uptake of high doses of exogenous Cr affects both Cr and Crn concentrations in serum (sCr: 14 folds; sCrn: 1.2 folds) and urine (uCr: 140 folds; uCrn: 1.5 folds). An abuse of Cr is therefore mostly spilled over in urine. Surprise drug tests, such as doping controls, happening during the period of Cr supplementa- tion can reveal an important increase in Cr and Crn concentrations, although subjects stopped suddenly Cr loading. The discernible effect of Cr supplementation on these values disappeared within one week.

This project is part of an effort conducted by the Justice Research and Statistics Association (JRSA) under a grant whose objective is to provide states with descriptions of existing methodologies to collect Domestic Violence (DV) and Sexual Assault (SA) data. JRSA has identified three different methodologies to collect such data: · Incident-based reporting as part of the Uniform Crime Reports · Specialized data collection from law enforcement through a separate data collection system · Specialized data collection coming directly from service providers. One state has been selected as an example of each type of data collection above, with Iowa selected as a representative of states with incident based reporting (IBR) as part of the UCR system.
