Turnera diffusa Willd. var. afrodisiaca (Ward) Urb. (syn. T aphrodisiaca) (Turneraceae) is a common aromatic plant growing wild in the subtropical regions of America and Africa. Its essential oil was studied by GC and GC-MS. Fifty-four components were characterized and identified, the most abundant being 1,8-cineol (11.4%), opoplenone (10.3%) cadalene (5.1%) and epi-cubenol (4.1%). Turnera diffusa Willd. var. afrodisiaca (Ward) Urb. (syn. T. aphrodisiaca) belongs to the family of Turneraceae and is an aromatic plant growing wild in the subtropical regions of America and Africa. It is widely used in the traditional medicine as e.g. anti-cough, diuretic, and aphrodisiac agent. This work presents a 3 min chromatographic analysis using low-pressure (LP) gas chromatography (GC)-ion-trap (IT) mass spectrometry (MS). The combination of a deactivated 0.6 m x 0.10 mm i.d., restrictor with a wide-bore CP-Wax 52 capillary column (10 m x 0.53 mm i.d., 1 mum) reduces the analysis time by a factor of 3-7 in comparison to the use of a conventional narrow bore column. Chromatographic conditions have been optimized to achieve the fastest separation with the highest signal/noise ratio in MS detection. These results allow fast and reliable quality control of the essential oil to be achieved. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Este trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento de metodologia para o controle de qualidade dos extratos etanólicos e infusão de Turnera diffusa Willd. ex Schult., Turneraceae, usando como marcadores os compostos fenólicos. Essa espécie é usada popularmente como afrodisíaca e antiulcerogênica. Foram usadas ©cnicas cromatográficas: CLAE acoplada com detector de ultravioleta e cromatografia em camada delgada. Foram detectados flavonóides como os principais componentes da planta.

We evaluated the phytotoxic effects that the hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts from leaves and branches of the species Turnera ulmifolia L. and Turnera diffusa Willd. ex Schult. (Turneraceae), at concentrations of 1.25, 2.50, 3.75 and 5.00 mg ml-1, have on seed germination and seedling development in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). None of the extracts tested prevented germination, although the ethyl acetate extracts of T. diffusa, at 3.75 and 5.00 mg ml-1, reduced the mean germination speed and time to germination. Hexane extracts of both species reduced the main root length, number of secondary roots and hypocotyl length. In the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts, the number of secondary roots and hypocotyl length varied by species and concentration. Ethyl acetate extracts of T. ulmifolia at ≤ 2.50 mg ml-1stimulated growth of the main root and hypocotyl, as did T. ulmifolia methanol extracts at 1.25 and 3.75 mg ml-1; all other extract/concentration combinations had an inhibitory effect on those parameters. The hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of T. diffusa inhibited the formation of secondary roots and of the main root, although significant inhibition of hypocotyl growth was observed only at ≥ 2.50 mg ml-1. Comparatively, T. diffusa extracts inhibited development to a greater degree, thus presenting greater allelopathic potential, than did T. ulmifolia extracts.

Recently, it has been a increasing interest in the antioxidative role of natural products to aid the endogenous protective biological systems against the deleterious effects of oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen (RNS) reactive species. Many antioxidant compounds, naturally occurring from plant sources. Natural antioxidants can protect and prevent the human body from oxidative stress and retard the progress of many diseases in which free radical are involved. Several plants used in the folk medicine to treat certain disorders that are accompanied by inflammation and other pharmacological properties have been proved their attributed properties, such antioxidant activity. Turnera ulmifolia Linn. var. elegans (Turneraceae), frequently employed by population as a medicinal plant, demonstrated antioxidant activity by in vitro and in vivo assays, using its leaf hydroethanolic extract (10%) he in vitro DPPH radical-scanvenging activity showed a strong antioxidant activity (86.57% ± 0.14), similar to Carduus marianus and catequine effects. For the in vivo assays, adult female Wistar rats (n=48) with carbon tetrachloride hepatic injury induced (2,5mL/kg i.p.) were used, Six groups or rats were uses (n=8) [G1 = control (1,25 mL/kg i.p. vehicle); G2 = CCl4 (2,5 mL/kg i.p.); G3 = CCl4 + extract 7 days (500 mg/kg p.o.); G4 = CCl4 + Legalon® 7 days (50 mg/kg p.o.), G5 = CCl4 + extract 21 days (500 mg/kg p.o.) e G6 = CCl4 + Legalon® 21 days (50 mg/kg p.o.)]. The hepatic oxidative injury was evaluated through biochemical parameters [alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST)] histopathological study, while thiobarbituric acid reactive products (TBAR), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) levels were used to evaluate proantioxidant parameters. The plant extract tested was found effective as hepatoprotective as evidenced by a decreasing in the ALT and AST activities (p<0.001) and TBAR (plasma, p<0.001 and liver, p<0.001). Levels of GSH (blood, p<0.001 and liver, p<0.001) and antioxidant enzymes [CAT erythrocyte (p<0.05) and hepatic (p<0.01); SOD erythrocyte (p<0.001) and hepatic (p<0.001); GPx erythrocyte (p<0.001) and hepatic (p<0.001)] were also significantly increased. Histopathological changes induced by CCl4 were significantly reduced by the extract treatment. The data obtained were comparable to that of Legalon®, a reference hepatoprotective drug. The results showed that T. ulmifolia leaf extract protects against CCl4 induced oxidative damage. Therefore, this effect must be associated to its antioxidant activity, attributed to the phenolic compounds, present in these extract, which can act as free radical scavengers

The infusion of the aerial parts of Turnera diffusa was phytochemically examined. Chromatographic procedures led to the isolation of a new flavone glycoside, five known flavonoids and p-arbutin. Structures were determined by 1D- and 2D NMR experiments, as well as ES-MS and UV spectra.

Syfte: Syftet var att undersöka sjuksköterskans syn pÃ¥ sin yrkesroll i den kommunala äldreomsorgen. Metod: studien är en empirisk studie med kvantitativ ansats och utförd i form av en enkätstudie, speciellt utformad för denna studie. Populationen bestod av 24 sjuksköterskor i en liten kommun i mellersta Sverige. Av dessa valde 22 sjuksköterskor, 92 %, att besvara enkäten. Resultat: Flertalet av sjuksköterskorna hade arbetat mÃ¥nga Ã¥r inom kommunen och var nöjda med sitt arbete och sin arbetstid. Tillsammans hade sjuksköterskorna ett mycket brett kunnande inom omvÃ¥rdnadsomrÃ¥det, men kunskaper och erfarenheter togs inte tillvara till fullo. Det fanns ändÃ¥ en önskan om fortsatt kompetensutveckling. Sjuksköterskans ansvar var mycket stort. Arbetsbördan var stor och ensamarbete förekom. Samarbetet med teamet kring patienten var gott och vÃ¥rden av de gamla upplevdes god. S¶d fann sjuksköterskan hos ledningen och hos kollegorna. Det patientnära arbetet hade fÃ¥tt ge vika för mer konsultativt arbete och dokumentation. Konklusion: Sjuksköterskans kompetens och erfarenhet borde tas tillvara pÃ¥ ett bättre sätt. Den patientnära omvÃ¥rdnaden har fÃ¥tt ge vika för dokumentation och vÃ¥rdande pÃ¥ distans. Sjuksköterskan behöver komma närmare patienten som hon har det medicinska ansvaret över och finns där för.

Missbruksproblematiken bland kvinnor har ökat och anses vara ett samhällsproblem. Inom sÃ¥väl den ämnesspecifika forskningen som i praktisk verksamhet har missbrukande kvinnor ofta betraktats som utsatta och traumatiserade. Studiens syfte var att belysa socialsekreterares syn pÃ¥ kvinnor och kvinnligheter i samband med missbruksproblematik. Detta studerades utifrÃ¥n frÃ¥ges¤llningar om deras arbetssätt, attityder, värderingar och syn pÃ¥ kvinnligheter. För att fÃ¥ förs¥else av fenomenets komplexitet användes kvalitativ metod med halvstrukturerade intervjuer samt de teoretiska perspektiven; socialkonstruktivism och symbolisk interaktionism. Analysen skedde med hjälp av meningskoncentrering och utifrÃ¥n tidigare forskning. Resultatet visade att socialsekreterarnas syn huvudsakligen var sams¤mmig, kvinnorna beskrevs generellt som utsatta och traumatiserade. Vidare framträdde ett behov av ytterligare reflektion gällande könsperspektivet. Avslutningsvis diskuterades behovet av forskning kring män som kön.

Introduction: Licania rigida Benth and Turnera ulmifolia Linn. var. elegans are species of semi-arid regional plants used in the treatment of various diseases. Objectives: The purpose of this study was chemically characterize the extracts and fractions and investigate the antimicrobial and antioxidant potential. Methods: For chemical analysis, were performed spectrophotometric quantification of the total phenolic and characterization of the extracts by chromatographic analysis. Evaluation of antioxidant activity was done by determining the radical scavenging capacity DPPH •. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by agar diffusion, broth microdilutionand time-kill assays. Results: The extracts and fractions L. rigid and T. ulmifolia showed a high phenolic content, the presence of flavonoids, which were determined as chemical markers. It was observed that the extracts of both species performed as sequestering agents in the trial of antioxidant activity in vitro. The L. rigida extract was the only active front strains of S. aureus 33591 (methicillin-resistant), S. aureus 29213, S. epidermidis 12228, and also against the yeast, Candida albicans, Candida dubliniensis, Candida tropicalis, Candida parapsilosis, Candida rugosa, Candida krusei eTrichosporon asahii. Conclusions: Based on these results it is possibly affirm the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of L. rigida and attributed the presence of polyphenolic flavonoid like responsible.

Att stta mamma och barn i övergången från sondmatning till att barnet kan nutriera sig helt genom amning eller flaskmatning är en omfattande och viktig del i omvårdnaden på en neonatalavdelning. Tidigare forskning av personalens upplevelser av denna process är begränsad. Forskning har mestadels fokuserat på någon eller några aspekter av mammors upplevelser av amning/flaskmatning på en neonatalavdelning.Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka personalens syn på amning och flaskmatning, samt beskriva hur de upplevde att de kunde stta mamma och barn i processen att gå från sondmatning till amning samt hinder och underlättande aspekter. Studiens ansats var kvalitativ där tolv intervjuer genomfördes. Vid intervjuerna användes en intervjuguide som skapats av författarna och handledaren.Resultatet av studien visade att personalen hade en positiv syn på amning. Flaskmatning ansågs vara ett bra andrahands alternativ men inte något som borde introduceras först. Då det gällde sttning av mamma och barn upplevdes tidig närhet vara viktigt men även att från personalens sida stta mammans tillit till sin egen förmåga för att underlätta amningen. Informanterna betonade vikten av en individanpassad vård både för mammor och barn. Informanterna upplevde även att viktfixeringen på avdelningen var frustrerande för både mammorna och dem själva. Aspekter som upplevdes underlätta amningsarbetet var tidigare erfarenhet hos både personal och mammor.

Liver diseases represent a major health problem around the world. in Mexico these are the 5th leading cause of death in the economically active population. in Mexico, it is estimated that about 60% of the population uses some medicine from plants to treat their illnesses. The purpose of this work was to search for medicinal plants in Mexico that have been evaluated for their hepatoprotective effect in different models. in this review we found only 13 plants evaluated for hepatoprotective activity: Amole tuber, Cochlospermum vitifolium, Heterotheca inuloides, Hibiscus sabdariffa, Leucophyllum frutescens, Prostechea michuacana, Psidium Guajava, Rosmarinus officinalis, Verbena Carolin, Centaurea americana, Juglans mollis, Krameria ramossisima and Turnera diffusa. This study describes the studies conducted in Mexico for each of them and the international literature reports of pharmacological and phytochemical studies.

The objective of this study was to develop a rapid and efficient system for regenerating shoots from nodal explants of scented geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L. Her. ex Ait: syn. P. roseum willd). Single node stem explants were inoculated in MS media containing different combinations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) or naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 mg/l) in a 4x4 factorial experiment. Multiple shoots were induced in media supplemented with BAP and IAA, Maximum number of shoots (56 per explant) were observed in the medium containing BAP and IAA at 1 mg/l each, 30 days after inoculation. Micro shoots were subcultured once in every four weeks. Adventitious shoots were induced from in vitro grown leaves and petioles. Several regenerated shoots were rooted on MS half-strength medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and the plantlets were hardened in the growth chamber. This micropropagation system could be used for rapid and large-scale production of scented geranium.

A 3D time-dependent model of the VAR process has been developed using CFD techniques. The model solves the coupled field equations for fluid flow, heat transfer (including phase change) and electromagnetic field, for both the electrode and the ingot. The motion of the electic arc 'preferred spot' can be specified based on observations. Correlations are sought between the local gap height, resulting from instantaneous liquid pool surface shape and electrode tip shape, and the arc motion. The detailed behaviour of the melting film on the electrode tip is studies using a spectral free surface technique, which allows investigation of the drops' detachment and drip shorts.
