Mass spectrometric analysis of the low-molecular weight (LMW) range of the serum/plasma proteome is revealing the existence of large numbers of previously unknown peptides and protein fragments predicted to be derived from low- abundance proteins. This raises the question of why such low abundance molecules would be retained at detectable levels in the circulation, instead of being rapidly cleared and excreted. Theoretical models of biomarker production and association with serum carrier proteins have been developed to elucidate the mechanisms governing biomarker half-life in the bloodstream. These models predict that the vast majority of LMW biomarkers exist in association with circulating high molecular mass carrier proteins. Moreover, the total serum/ plasma concentration of the biomarker is largely determined by the clearance rate of the carrier protein, not the free-phase biomarker clearance itself. These predictions have been verified experimentally using molecular mass fractionation of human serum before mass spectrometry sequence analysis. These principles have profound implications for biomarker discovery and measurement.

Booktrust Treasure is a bookgifting programme delivered in pre-school and early years settings. The primary intended outcomes of the programme are increased family enjoyment of reading and sharing books. The following study explored the implementation quality of Bookstart Treasure and how this was associated with family reading outcomes.
The findings reveal strong perceptions among practitioners that the intervention is having a positive effect on a wide range of family reading outcomes. Whilst this is a positive finding in relation to programme implementation, it is important to note that this does not, in itself, constitute evidence that Bookstart Treasure is having a positive effect. Unfortunately, measuring programme effectiveness was not possible within this implementation study.
With regard to delivery, the programme was found to be equally well delivered in both voluntary and statutory settings. There is also some evidence that higher quality programme implementation is associated with increased enjoyment and usage of the packs amongst families. Whilst encouraging, it is important to note that it cannot be concluded from this that higher levels of implementation have a direct effect on these family outcomes. Furthermore, the findings also provide some evidence that parents with lower levels of education enjoy and use the packs more than their counterparts with higher levels of education.

On average approximately 13% of the water that is withdrawn by Canadian municipal water suppliers is lost before it reaches final users. This is an important topic for several reasons: water losses cost money, losses force water agencies to draw more water from lakes and streams thereby putting more stress on aquatic ecosystems, leaks reduce system reliability, leaks may contribute to future pipe failures, and leaks may allow contaminants to enter water systems thereby reducing water quality and threatening the health of water users. Some benefits of leak detection fall outside water agencies’ accounting purview (e.g. reduced health risks to households connected to public water supply systems) and, as a result, may not be considered adequately in water agency decision-making. Because of the regulatory environment in which Canadian water agencies operate, some of these benefits-especially those external to the agency or those that may accrue to the agency in future time periods- may not be fully counted when agencies decide on leak detection efforts. Our analysis suggests potential reforms to promote increased efforts for leak detection: adoption of a Canada-wide goal of universal water metering; development of full-cost accounting and, pricing for water supplies; and co-operation amongst the provinces to promulgate standards for leak detection efforts and provide incentives to promote improved efficiency and rational investment decision-making.
