The European Project Semester at ISEP: Learning to Learn Engineering

The European Project Semester at ISEP (EPS@ISEP) is a one semester project-based learning programme addressed to engineering students from diverse scientific backgrounds and nationalities. The students, organized in multicultural teams, are challenged to solve real world multidisciplinary problems, accounting for 30 ECTU. The EPS package, although focused on project development (20 ECTU), includes a series of complementary seminars aimed at fostering soft, project-related and engineering transversal skills (10 ECTU). This paper presents the study plan, resources, operation and results of the EPS@ISEP that was created in 2011 to apply the best engineering education practices and promote the internationalization of ISEP. The results show that the EPS@ISEP students acquire during one semester the scientific, technical and soft competences necessary to propose, design and implement a solution for a multidisciplinary problem.

Current engineering education challenges require approaches that promote scientific, technical, design and complementary skills while fostering autonomy, innovation and responsibility. The European Project Semester (EPS) at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) (EPS@ISEP) is a one semester project-based learning programme (30 European Credit Transfer Units (ECTU)) for engineering students from diverse scientific backgrounds and nationalities that intends to address these goals. The students, organised in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, are challenged to solve real multidisciplinary problems during one semester. The EPS package, although on project development (20 ECTU), includes a series of complementary seminars aimed at fostering soft, project-related and engineering transversal skills (10 ECTU). Hence, the students enrolled in this programme improve their transversal skills and learn, together and with the team of supervisors, subjects distinct from their core training. This paper presents the structure, implementation and results of the EPS@ISEP that was created in 2011 to apply the best engineering practices and promote internationalisation and engineering education innovation at ISEP.

Compet��ncias transversais: a import��ncia das compet��ncias transversais nas miss��es internacionais

A competitividade contempor��nea e a globaliza����o impulsionaram as empresas a explorar novos mercados, e a munir-se de recursos distintivos e de valor acrescentado. Para al��m da expans��o dos mercados, Le Boterf (2006) afirma que a solicita����o social de confian��a tem aumentado, e as empresas t��m de ser capazes de proporcionar e garanti-la. Neste sentido a adequa����o dos Recursos Humanos �� imperativo na estrat��gia das organiza����es. Este estudo tem como objetivos compreender qual a import��ncia das compet��ncias transversais na miss��o internacional, compreender quais as compet��ncias transversais que s��o mais valorizadas pelos recrutadores e como �� feita a sua avalia����o. Para conseguir responder a estas quest��es, emerge a investiga����o que se segue, com um cariz qualitativo. O m��todo de recolha de dados utilizado foi a entrevista semiestruturada e foram entrevistados dez recrutadores de expatriados. Os resultados sugerem que as compet��ncias transversais s��o caracter��sticas importantes na miss��o internacional, uma vez que atuam em fatores que influenciam o sucesso da miss��o. Das compet��ncias mais importantes �� enumerado o relacionamento interpessoal, trabalho em equipa, comunica����o, capacidade de adapta����o e a toler��ncia �� ambiguidade. No final do trabalho s��o apresentados os resultados da investiga����o, bem como a sua discuss��o.

An��lisi de les compet��ncies comunicatives transversals dels graus d'enginyeria inform��tica, enginyeria de telecomunicaci�� i multim��dia a l'estat espanyol

En el cas sota estudi, hem revisat totes les mem��ries oficials de verificaci�� disponibles dels graus en enginyeria en inform��tica, enginyeria en telecomunicaci�� i multim��dia amb l'objectiu d'analitzar diferents aspectes de la pres��ncia de diferents compet��ncies comunicatives transversals. En concret ens hem centrat en les compet��ncies d'expressi�� oral i escrita en llengua pr��pia i estrangera (angl��s), en l'habilitat en les relacions interpersonals i en la capacitat de comunicar-se amb audi��ncies expertes i profanes sobre els mat��ries dels estudis.

Effects of Bologna, the economic crisis and the immigration in enrollment at the UPM

Over the past 20 years, the economic landscape has changed dramatically in Spain, undergoing a growth explosion and a subsequent decline which has led to the current economic crisis. This growth has led to heavy immigration from both developed and developing countries, which provided skilled and unskilled labour. This article aims to analyze the impact of immigrant students at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, pondering the effect that the economic crisis is having and will have on this group, and evaluating the implementation of new plans of Bologna. We analyze the enrolment at the UPM and particularize to the Civil Engineering school (previous EUITOP), crossing with the effect of the economic crisis on foreign students. The exponential increase of foreign students, most of them from Latin American and born in Spain, and students of European countries that have started to register considerably from 2002 and 2003, lead us to consider a renewal in certain areas of learning, and to exploit the possibility of interaction with other countries so successful through the acquisition of transversal skills, as well as to guide and improve, support and integrate these groups at our university Keywords: knowledge, learning, Bologna, academic record

Ensenyar i aprendre literatura en contextos digitals: reptes i necessitats did��ctiques

En aquest article es presenta una perspectiva del desenvolupament de la tecnologia al servei de l'ensenyament. El docent del segle XXI ha d'acomplir amb objectius cognitius, metodol��gics i tecnol��gics per a abastir el seu alumnat dins dels par��metres de compet��ncia curricular, com tamb�� els instrumentals. La generaci�� que est�� a les nostres aules s��n usuaris i gestors d'una societat en qu�� estan consolidant habilitats i coneixements transversals que han de formar-se a l'escola tant com ho fan a l'��mbit dom��stic.

O curso de literacia da informa����o da NOVA Escola Doutoral: The road to information literacy

Descrevem-se as diversas fases do ���Projeto para uma Estrat��gia de Literacia Informacional na NOVA��� com vista �� implementa����o de uma estrat��gia transversal de literacia da informa����o que abrangesse todas as Unidades Org��nicas da NOVA e o modo como a sua orienta����o de topo, din��mica, metodologia e objetivos conduziram, posteriormente, �� inclus��o de um curso de Literacia Informacional no programa da NOVA Escola Doutoral. Real��ando que a implementa����o do curso de Literacia Informacional nesse projeto passou a constituir um dos poucos exemplos de oferta formativa e de efetiva concretiza����o de um projeto de interven����o curricular e pedag��gica ao n��vel da literacia da informa����o no ensino superior em Portugal, promovendo a colabora����o entre colegas e indo ao encontro de uma transfer��ncia de saberes e de uma partilha de compet��ncias abertas �� colabora����o de doutorandos e orientadores, enunciamse os objetivos do curso de Literacia Informacional e de cada m��dulo que o constitui e os resultados esperados ao n��vel do ensino e da aprendizagem. Conclui-se que a diversifica����o dos percursos formativos em contexto universit��rio, em estreita converg��ncia com outras aprendizagens ao n��vel sociocultural, confere aos bibliotec��rios a responsabilidade de desempenhar um papel ativo no ensino e na promo����o e consolida����o das compet��ncias transversais dos estudantes, contribuindo a literacia da informa����o para o sucesso acad��mico tamb��m ao n��vel do ensino superior.

Os enfermeiros e as dimens��es motivacionais : estudo n��o experimental, descritivo, anal��tico e transversal, baseado na t��cnica de inqu��rito

RESUMO - A profiss��o de enfermagem �� definida por Virg��nia Henderson (1966), como tendo por objeto "ajudar o indiv��duo, saud��vel ou doente, na execu����o das atividades que contribuem para conservar a sua sa��de ou a sua recupera����o, de tal maneira, devendo desempenhar esta fun����o no sentido de tornar o indiv��duo o mais independente poss��vel, ou seja, a alcan��ar a sua anterior independ��ncia". A aten����o �� sa��de ao longo da hist��ria da humanidade vem sendo desenvolvida de muitos modos e por diversos atores sociais. O trabalho em sa��de �� essencial para a vida humana e envolve atividades realizadas por profissionais e equipas multidisciplinares que dominam os conhecimentos e t��cnicas essenciais para assistir o indiv��duo com problemas de sa��de ou em risco de adoecer, em atividades de investiga����o, de preven����o, curativo e de reabilita����o. �� Enfermagem tal como a outras profiss��es, s��o cada vez mais exigidos requisitos de efici��ncia, efic��cia e polival��ncia na sua atividade, tendo a motiva����o um papel fundamental na atitude, postura e desempenho do profissional. Este trabalho descreve o estudo da motiva����o profissional, numa popula����o de enfermeiros portugueses numa institui����o privada. A vers��o adaptada de um inqu��rito como instrumento de autopreenchimento representa v��rios construtos implicados no processo motivacional, em contexto profissional. Pretendo com este estudo identificar a dimens��o da motiva����o mais relevantes no processo motivacional dos enfermeiros, assim como as suas varia����es face a vari��veis de caracter��sticas pessoais, profissionais e institucionais. A partir dos resultados obtidos pretendo ainda apresentar sugest��es de maneira a oferecer oportunidade de transforma����o do seu ambiente organizacional em institui����es similares.

Habilidades sociales: m��s que una competencia transversal. Experiencia formativa en habilidades sociales en la Facultad de Educaci��n Social y Trabajo Social Pere Tarr��s (URL)

Queremos dar a conocer el trabajo que desde nuestra Facultad planteamos a nuestros alumnos en la asignatura de habilidades sociales. A partir de la detecci��n y del an��lisis de sus competencias sociales, se establece un plan de trabajo con la finalidad de que mejoren sus habilidades sociales tanto a nivel personal como profesional. Partimos de una metodolog��a de participaci��n activa donde el alumno se involucra en la organizaci��n, el desarrollo y en la evaluaci��n de la asignatura. Despu��s de recoger los datos sobre la satisfacci��n de los alumnos, consideramos que es una pr��ctica educativa de ��xito por lo que presentamos esta experiencia para facilitar su difusi��n.

Promotion of learning skills in the study of economics. pilot project in the subject area of

This communication is part of a larger teaching innovation project financed by the University ofBarcelona, whose objective is to develop and evaluate transversal competences of the UB, learningability and responsibility. The competence is divided into several sub-competencies being the ability toanalyze and synthesis the most intensely worked in the first year. The work presented here part fromthe results obtained in phase 1 and 2 previously implemented in other subjects (Mathematics andHistory) in the first year of the degree of Business Administration Degree. In these subjects��� previousexperiences there were deficiencies in the acquisition of learning skills by the students. The work inthe subject of Mathematics facilitated that students become aware of the deficit. The work on thesubject of History insisted on developing readings schemes and with the practical exercises wassought to go deeply in the development of this competence.The third phase presented here is developed in the framework of the second year degree, in the WorldEconomy subject. The objective of this phase is the development and evaluation of the same crosscompetence of the previous phases, from a practice that includes both, quantitative analysis andcritical reflection. Specifically the practice focuses on the study of the dynamic relationship betweeneconomic growth and the dynamics in the distribution of wealth. The activity design as well as theselection of materials to make it, has been directed to address gaps in the ability to analyze andsynthesize detected in the subjects of the first year in the previous phases of the project.The realization of the practical case is considered adequate methodology to improve the acquisition ofcompetence of the students, then it is also proposed how to evaluate the acquisition of suchcompetence. The practice is evaluated based on a rubric developed in the framework of the projectobjectives. Thus at the end of phase 3 we can analyze the process that have followed the students,detect where they have had major difficulties and identify those aspects of teaching that can help toimprove the acquisition of skills by the students. The interest of this phase resides in the possibility tovalue whether tracing of learning through competences, organized in a collaborative way, is a goodtool to develop the acquisition of these skills and facilitate their evaluation.

Skills in the XXI Century Guidance: An Approach to the Costa Rican Reality

During a long time, the term competence has been used in different fields. Among those fields, and one of the most important, we can mention the educational system, from preschool to university levels. The term has to be understood as one person integral behavior, making him/her able to enter the labor force in the most competitive way. Within the university realm, experts have tried to include the model of competences as a transversal axle into the teaching-learning process. In European universities, such model has been implemented in most of them. In Latin America universities, on the other hand, it has been used in a good number of countries. The importance of early detection of competences among target populations in education has been widely discussed. However, it has been highlighted the necessity of considering romantic or subjective competences, which seem to lack of value in this complex and competitive actual world. The term competence has been classified as genetic competence, or common and specific competence. The latter is related to the knowledge scope. Within the counseling field, specifically, the general and specific competences are deemed highly appropriate for good a work performance. This article focuses on the main antecedents of competences and analyzes this approach from counseling field perspective. In regards to this specific aspect, a survey with professionals in counseling was carried out. Such a survey ends up dealing with some of the competences considered unavoidable for an accurate performance of professionals in counseling. It is important to mention that the competences of the survey mainly point out to genetic competences rather than to specific competences.
