Mononuclear palladium(II) complexes containing both pyrazole-type ligands and thiocyanate, of general formula [Pd(SCN) 2(L) 2] {L = pyrazole (HPz) and l-phenyl-3-methylpyrazole (phmPz)} have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. and n.m.r. spectroscopy and by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The Pd atom in these structures lies on the crystallographic inversion center; in a square-planar coordination geometry made by two sulfur and two nitrogen atoms of the ligands, both in trans positions.

A dinuclear Ni-II complex, [Ni-2(L)(2)(H2O)(NCS)(2)]center dot 3H(2)O (1) in which the metal atoms are bridged by one water molecule and two mu(2)-phenolate ions, and a thiocyanato-bridged dimeric Cull complex, [Cu(L)NCS](2) (2) [L = tridentate Schiff-base ligand, N-(3-aminopropyl)salicylaldimine, derived from 1:1 condensation of salicylaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopropane], have been synthesized and characterized by IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The structure of 1 consists of dinuclear units with crystallographic C-2 symmetry in which each Ni-II atom is in a distorted octahedral environment. The Ni-O distance and the Ni-O-Ni angle, through the bridged water molecule, are 2.240(11) angstrom and 82.5(5)degrees, respectively. The structure of 2 consists of dinuclear units bridged asymmetrically by di-mu(1,3)-NCS ions; each Cull ion is in a square-pyramidal environment with tau = 0.25. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies indicate the presence of dominant ferromagnetic exchange coupling in complex 1 with J = 3.1 cm(-1), whereas complex 2 exhibits weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the Cu-II centers with J = -1.7 cm(-1). Four new trinuclear hetero-metallic nickel(II)-cadmium(II) complexes [(NiL)(2)Cd(NCS)(2)] (1A and 1B), [(NiL)(2)Cd(NCO)(2)] (2) and [(NiL)(2)Cd(N-3)(2)] (3) have been synthesized using [NiL] as a so-called "ligand complex" (where H2L = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine) and structurally characterized. Crystal structure analyses reveal that all four complexes contain a trinuclear moiety in which two square planar [NiL] units are bonded to a central cadmium(II) ion through double phenoxido bridges. The Cd(II) is in a six-coordinate distorted octahedral environment being bonded additionally to two mutually cis nitrogen atoms of terminal thiocyanate (in 1A and 1B), cyanate (in 2) and azide (in 3). Complexes 1A and 1B have the same molecular formula but crystallize in very different monoclinic unit cells and can be considered as polymorphs. On the other hand, the two isoelectronic complexes 2 and 3 are indeed isomorphous and crystallize only in one form. Their conformation is similar to that observed in 1A.

Reaction of cobalt(II) perchlorate hexahydrate with a potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand, HL (2-methoxy-6-(2-diethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol) in presence of sodium azide and sodium thiocyanate yields two complexes Co( L)( HL)(N-3)]center dot ClO4 ( 1) and Co( L)( HL)(NCS)] center dot ClO4 ( 2); both being characterized by different physicochemical methods. Crystal structure of 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction while that of 2 was reported earlier. In 1, the central cobalt(III) adopts slightly distorted octahedral geometry with same donor set to that of 2. Catalytic efficacy of the complexes towards epoxidation of different alkenes under aerobic condition were investigated in homogeneous medium which reveals that 1 is better catalyst than 2 with respect to alkene oxidation, reflected from the turn over frequencies (TOF) measured at an optimum temperature of 60 degrees C in acetonitrile. Four manganese(II) complexes Mn2(paa)2(N3)4 (1), [Mn(paa)2(NCS)2] 3/2H2O (2), Mn(papea)2(NCS)2 (3), [Mn(dpka)2(NCS)2] 1/2H2O(4) of three neutral N,N donor bidentate Schiff bases were synthesized and physico- chemically characterized by means of partial elemental analyses, electronic, infrared and EPR spectral studies. Compounds 3 and 4 were obtained as single crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction. Compound 4 recrystallized as Mn(dpka)2(NCS)2. Both the compounds crystallized in the monoclinic space groups P21 for 3 and C2/c for 4. Manganese(II) is found to be in a distorted octahedral geometry in both the monomeric complexes with thiocyanate anion as a terminal ligand coordinating through the nitrogen atom. EPR spectra in DMF solutions at 77 K show hyperfine sextets with low intensity forbidden lines lying between each of the two main hyperfine lines and the zero field splitting parameters (D and E) were calculated.

A new mononuclear Cu(II) complex, [CuL(ClO4)(2)] (1) has been derived from symmetrical tetradentate di-Schiff base, N,N'-bis-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-propane-1,3-diamine (L) and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The copper atom assumes a tetragonally distorted octahedral geometry with two perchlorate oxygens coordinated very weakly in the axial positions. Reactions of I with sodium azide, ammonium thiocyanate or sodium nitrite solution yielded compounds [CuL(N-3)]ClO4 (2), [CuL(SCN)ClO4 (3) or [CuL(NO2)]-ClO4 (4), respectively, all of which have been characterized by X-ray analysis. The geometries of the penta-coordinated copper(H) in complexes 2-4 are intermediate between square pyramid and trigonal bipyramid (tbp) having the Addition parameters (tau) 0.47, 0.45 and 0.58, respectively. In complex 4, the nitrite ion is coordinated as a chelating ligand and essentially both the 0 atoms of the nitrite occupy one axial site. Complex 1 shows distinct preference for the anion in the order SCN- > N-3(-) > NO2- in forming the complexes 24 when treated with a SCN-/N-3(-)/NO2- mixture. The 1:1 condensation of N-methyl-1,3-diaminopropane and N,N-diethyl-1,2-diminoethane with 2-acetylpyridine, respectively at high dilution gives the tridentate mono-condensed Schiff bases N-methyl-N'-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-propane-1,3-diamine (L-1) and N,N-diethyl-N'-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-ethane-1,2-diamine (L-2). The tridentate ligands were allowed to react with methanol solutions of nickel(II) thiocyanate to prepare the complexes [Ni(L-1)(SCN)(2)(OH2) (1) and [{Ni(L-2)(SCN)}(2)] (2). Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to confirm the structures of the complexes. The nickel(II) in complex 1 is bonded to three nitrogen donor atoms of the ligand L-1 in a mer orientation, together with two thiocyanates bonded through nitrogen and a water molecule, and it is the first Schiff base complex of nickel(II) containing both thiocyanate and coordinated water. The coordinated water initiates a hydrogen bonded 2D network. In complex 2, the nickel ion occupies a slightly distorted octahedral coordination sphere, being bonded to three nitrogen atoms from the ligand L-2, also in a mer orientation, and two thiocyanate anions through nitrogen. In contrast to 1, the sixth coordination site is occupied by a sulfur atom from a thiocyanate anion in an adjacent molecule, thus creating a centrosymmetric dimer. A variable temperature magnetic study of complex 2 indicates the simultaneous presence of zero-field splitting, weak intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling and intermolecular antiferromagnetic interactions between the nickel(II) centers.

Three new trinuclear heterometallic nickel(II)manganese(II) complexes, [(NiL)2Mn(NCS)2] (1), [(NiL)2Mn(NCO)2] (2), and [{NiL(EtOH)}2Mn(NO2)2]center dot 2EtOH (3), have been synthesized by using [NiL] as the so-called ligand complex [where H2L = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine] and have been structurally characterized. Crystal structure analyses revealed that complexes 1 and 2 are angular trinuclear species, in which two terminal four-coordinate square planar [NiL] moieties are coordinated to a central MnII through double phenoxido bridges. The MnII is in a six-coordinate distorted octahedral environment that is bonded additionally to two mutually cis nitrogen atoms of terminal thiocyanate (in 1) and cyanate (in 2). In complex 3, in addition to the double phenoxo bridge, the two terminal NiII ions are linked to the central MnII by means of a nitrite bridge (1?N:2?O) that, together with a coordinated ethanol molecule, gives rise to an octahedral environment around the NiII ions and consequently the structure becomes linear. Catecholase activity of these three complexes was examined by using 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) as the substrate. All three complexes mimic catecholase activity and the rate of catechol oxidation follows saturation kinetics with respect to the substrate and first-order kinetics with respect to the catalyst. The EPR spectra of the complexes exhibit characteristic six line spectra, which indicate the presence of high-spin octahedral MnII species in solution state. The ESI-MS positive spectrum of 1 in the presence of 3,5-DTBC has been recorded to investigate possible complexsubstrate intermediates.

New copper(II) complexes of general empirical formula, Cu(mpsme)X center dot xCH(3)COCH(3) (mpsme = anionic form of the 6-methyl-2-formylpyridine Schiff base of S-methyldithiocarbazate; X = Cl, N-3, NCS, NO3; x = 0, 0.5) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, electronic, EPR and susceptibility measurements. Room temperature mu(eff) values for the complexes are in the range 1.75-2.1 mu(beta) typical of uncoupled or weakly coupled Cu(II) centres. The EPR spectra of the [Cu(mpsme)X] (X = Cl, N-3, NO3, NCS) complexes reveal a tetragonally distorted coordination sphere around the mononuclear Cu(II) centre. We have exploited second derivative EPR spectra in conjunction with Fourier filtering (sine bell and Hamming functions) to extract all of the nitrogen hyperfine coupling matrices. While the X-ray crystallography of [Cu(mpsme)NCS] reveals a linear polymer in which the thiocyanate anion bridges the two copper(II) ions, the EPR spectra in solution are typical of a magnetically isolated monomeric Cu(II) centres indicating dissociation of the polymeric chain in solution. The structures of the free ligand, Hmpsme and the {[Cu(mpsme)NO3] center dot 0.5CH(3)COCH(3)}(2) and [Cu(mpsme)NCS](n) complexes have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The {[Cu(mpsme)NO3]0.5CH(3)COCH(3)}(2) complex is a centrosymmetric dimer in which each copper atom adopts a five-coordinate distorted square-pyramidal geometry with an N2OS2 coordination environment, the Schiff base coordinating as a uninegatively charged tridentate ligand chelating through the pyridine and azomethine nitrogen atoms and the thiolate, an oxygen atom of a unidentate nitrato ligand and a bridging sulfur atom from the second ligand completing the coordination sphere. The [Cu(mpsme)(NCS)](n) complex has a novel staircase-like one dimensional polymeric structure in which the NCS- ligands bridge two adjacent copper(II) ions asymmetrically in an end-to-end fashion providing its nitrogen atom to one copper and the sulfur atom to the other.
