The association parameter in the diffuswn equaiior, dye fo Wiike one Chong has been interpreted in deferminable properties, thus permitting easily the calculation of the same for unknown systems. The proposed eqyotion a!se holds goods for water as soiute in organic solvenfs. The over-all percentage error remains the sarrse as that of the original equation.

The specific heat, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and density of Brazilian orange juice were determined between 0.34 and 0.73 (w/w) water content and with temperatures from 0.5 to 62°C. The experimental data were fitted as functions of temperature and water content and all properties showed a linear dependency with these variables. In the tested range, the water content exhibited a greater influence on the analyzed properties than temperature. © 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. All rights reserved.

We present here a numerical study of laminar doubly diffusive free convection flows adjacent to a vertical surface in a stable thermally stratified medium. The governing equations of mass, momentum, energy and species are non-dimensionalized. These equations have been solved by using an implicit finite difference method and local non-similarity method. The results show many interesting aspects of complex interaction of the two buoyant mechanisms that have been shown in both the tabular as well as graphical form.

Doping of magnetic element Mn and Cr in GaN was achieved by thermal diffusion. The conductivity of the samples, which were all n-type, did not change significantly after the diffusion doping. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed no secondary phase in the samples. Experiments using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) showed that the samples were ferromagnetic at 5 and 300 K, implying the Curie temperature to be around or over 300 K, despite their n-type conductivity. This work explores the effects of argon and nitrogen, two electrochemically and chemically inert gases frequently used in sample preparation of room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) solutions, on the eelectrochemical characterization of ferrocene (Fc) dissolved in the RTIL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]). Remarkably, chronoamperometrically determined diffusion coefficients of Fc in [C(2)mim][NTf2] are found to increase from 4.8 (+/- 0.2) x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) under vacuum conditions to 6.6 (+/- 0.5) x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) in an atmosphere of 1 atm Ar. In contrast, exposing a vacuum-purified sample to an atmosphere of 1 atm N-2 resulted in no significant change in the measured diffusion coefficient of Fc. The effect of dissolved argon on diffusion transport is unexpected and has implications in electrochemistry and elsewhere. Fc was found to volatilize under vacuum conditions. We propose, however, that evacuation of the cell by vacuum prior to electrochemical measurements being carried out is the only way to ensure that no contamination of the sample occurs, and use of an in situ method of determining the diffusion coefficient and concentration of Fc dispells, any ambiguity associated with Fc depletion by vacuum.

This paper studies the relationship between aging, physical changes and the results of non-destructive testing of plywood. 176 pieces of plywood were tested to analyze their actual and estimated density using non-destructive methods (screw withdrawal force and ultrasound wave velocity) during a laboratory aging test. From the results of statistical analysis it can be concluded that there is a strong relationship between the non-destructive measurements carried out, and the decline in the physical properties of the panels due to aging. The authors propose several models to estimate board density. The best results are obtained with ultrasound. A reliable prediction of the degree of deterioration (aging) of board is presented. Breeder blanket materials have to produce tritium from lithium while fulfilling several strict conditions. In particular, when dealing with materials to be applied in fusion reactors, one of the key questions is the study of light ions retention, which can be produced by transmutation reactions and/or introduced by interaction with the plasma. In ceramic breeders the understanding of the hydrogen isotopes behaviour and specially the diffusion of tritium to the surface is crucial. Moreover the evolution of the microstructure during irradiation with energetic ions, neutrons and electrons is complex because of the interaction of a high number of processes.

It is shown how the phase-space kinetic theory of polymeric liquid mixtures leads to a set of extended Maxwell-Stefan equations describing multicomponent diffusion. This expression reduces to standard results for dilute solutions and for undiluted polymers. The polymer molecules are modeled as flexible bead-spring structures. To obtain the Maxwell-Stefan equations, the usual expression for the hydrodynamic drag force on a bead, used in previous kinetic theories, must be replaced by a new expression that accounts explicitly for bead-bead interactions between different molecules.

The formation of vapor layers around an electrode immersed in a conducting liquid prior to generation of a plasma discharge is studied using numerical simulations. This study quantifies and explains the effects of the electrode geometry and applied voltage pulses, as well as the electrical and thermal properties of the liquids on the temporal dynamics of the pre-breakdown conditions in the vapor layer. This model agrees well with experimental data, in particular, the time needed to reach the electrical breakdown threshold. Because the time needed for discharge ignition can be accurately predicted from the model, the parameters such as the pulse shape, voltage, and electrode configuration can be optimized under different liquid conditions, which facilitates a faster and more energy-efficient plasma generation.

The layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of Co with trivalent cations decompose irreversibly to yield oxides with the spinel structure. Spinel formation is aided by the oxidation of Co(II) to Co(III) in the ambient atmosphere. When the decomposition is carried out under N-2, the oxidation of Co(II) is suppressed, and the resulting oxide has the rock salt structure. Thus, the Co-Al-CO32-/Cl- LDHs yield oxides of the type Co1- Al-x(2x/3)rectangle O-x/3, which are highly metastable, given the large defect concentration. This defect oxide rapidly reverts back to the original hydroxide on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution. Interlayer NO3- anions, on the other hand, decompose generating a highly oxidizing atmosphere, whereby the Co-Al-NO3- LDH decomposes to form the spinel phase even in a N-2 atmosphere. The oxide with the defect rock salt structure formed by the thermal decomposition of the Co-Fe-CO32- LDH under N2, on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution, follows a different kinetic pathway and undergoes a solution transformation into the inverse spinel Co(Co, Fe)(2)O-4. Fe3+ has a low octahedral crystal field stabilization energy and therefore prefers the tetrahedral coordination offered by the structure of the inverse spinel rather than the octahedral coordination of the parent LDH. Similar considerations do not hold in the case of Ga- and In-containing LDHs, given the considerable barriers to the diffusion of M3+ (M=Ga, In) from octahedral to tetrahedral sites owing to their large size. Consequently, the In-containing oxide residue reverts back to the parent hydroxide, whereas this reconstruction is partial in the case of the Ga-containing oxide. These studies show that the reversible thermal behavior offers a competing kinetic pathway to spinel formation. Suppression of the latter induces the reversible behavior in an LDH that otherwise decomposes irreversibly to the spinel.

The temperature dependence of thermal conductivity of liquids as given by Horrocks and McLaughlin is re-examined and useful relations to estimate thermal conductivity are presented. In the case of the 12 homologous series considered the maximum deviation is about 5%.
