An experimental study of the Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) is performed in an Optical Recirculating Loop (RCL). The RCL enables to simulate the transmission through various optical links using just one optical fiber spool, one in line amplifier, some optical filters and devices in a low cost manner. The total amount of PDL in a Recirculating loop, due to its statistical nature, is different of the simple sum of each element of the recirculating loop because of the alignment variation of the PDL elements with time, depending on the environmental conditions such as fiber stress and temperature. In this paper theoretical studies are also performed using formalism of Jones and Mueller matrices in order to represent the different optical elements in the recirculating loop. The PDL must be correctly characterized in order to evaluate properly the impact on the performance of next generation DWDM systems. Theoretical and experimental results comparison shows that a depolarization of 7% occurs in the experimental setup, probably by the optical amplifier due to the depolarized nature of the amplified spontaneous emission.

The glued- laminated lumber (glulam) technique is an efficient process for the rational use of wood. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRPs) associated with glulam beams provide significant improvements in strength and stiffness and alter the failure mode of these structural elements. In this context, this paper presents guidance for glulam beam production, an experimental analysis of glulam beams made of Pinus caribea var. hondurensis species without and with externally-bonded FRP and theoretical models to evaluate reinforced glulam beams (bending strength and stiffness). Concerning the bending strength of the beams, this paper aims only to analyze the limit state of ultimate strength in compression and tension. A specific disposal was used in order to avoid lateral buckling, once the tested beams have a higher ratio height-to-width. The results indicate the need of production control so as to guarantee a higher efficiency of the glulam beams. The FRP introduced in the tensile section of glulam beams resulted in improvements on their bending strength and stiffness due to the reinforcement thickness increase. During the beams testing, two failure stages were observed. The first was a tensile failure on the sheet positioned under the reinforcement layer, while the second occurred as a result of a preliminary compression yielding on the upper side of the lumber, followed by both a shear failure on the fiber-lumber interface and a tensile failure in wood. The model shows a good correlation between the experimental and estimated results.

Thermal action on timber causes it to degrade through combustion of its chemical components, which leads to the release of vapors, combustible gases and surface char. This diminishes its load capacity, due to the reduction of its cross section by charring and to changes in its mechanical properties of strength and stiffness as a function of its exposure to high temperatures. This paper reports the charring rates observed on Eucalyptus structural beams and presents a numerical and experimental study of the behavior of these beams when exposed to fire, in which the properties of strength and stiffness were evaluated as a function of rising temperatures, allowing an analysis of the effect of the section factor on the internal rise in temperature of structural Eucalyptus beams.

The theoretical and experimental open-circuit voltage optimizations of a simple fabrication process of silicon solar cells n(+)p with rear passivation are presented. The theoretical results were obtained by using an in-house developed program, including the light trapping effect and metal-grid optimization. On the other hand, the experimental steps were monitored by the photoconductive decay technique. The starting materials presented thickness of about 300 pm and resistivities: FZ (0.5 Omega cm), Cz-type 1 (2.5 Omega cm) and Cz-type 2 (3.3 Omega cm). The Gaussian profile emitters were optimized with sheet resistance between 55 Omega/sq and 100 Omega/sq, and approximately 2.0 mu m thickness in accordance to the theoretical results. Excellent implied open-circuit voltages of 670.8 mV, 652.5 mV and 662.6 mV, for FZ, Cz-type 1 and Cz-type 2 silicon wafers, respectively, could be associated to the measured lifetimes that represents solar cell efficiency up to 20% if a low cost anti-reflection coating system, composed by random pyramids and SiO(2) layer, is considered even for typical Cz silicon. This paper describes the buckling phenomenon of a tubular truss with unsupported length through a full-scale test and presents a practical computational method for the design of the trusses allowing for the contribution of torsional stiffness against buckling, of which the effect has never been considered previously by others. The current practice for the design of a planar truss has largely been based on the linear elastic approach which cannot allow for the contribution of torsional stiffness and tension members in a structural system against buckling. The over-simplified analytical technique is unable to provide a realistic and an economical design to a structure. In this paper the stability theory is applied to the second-order analysis and design of the structural form, with detailed allowance for the instability and second-order effects in compliance with design code requirements. Finally, the paper demonstrates the application of the proposed method to the stability design of a commonly adopted truss system used in support of glass panels in which lateral bracing members are highly undesirable for economical and aesthetic reasons.

The present work emphasizes the use of chirality as an efficient tool to synthesize new types of second order nonlinear materials. Second harmonic generation efficiency (SHG) is used as a measure of second order nonlinear response. Nonlinear optical properties of polymers have been studied theoretically and experimentally. Polymers were designed theoretically by ab initio and semiempirical calculations. All the polymeric systems have been synthesized by condensation polymerization. Second harmonic generation efficiency of the synthesized systems has been measured experimentally by Kurtz and Perry powder method

In this thesis, a dual mode tunable gas sensor based on intracavity laser absorption spectroscopy (ICLAS) principle is investigated, both, numerically and experimentally. In order to minimize the cost and size of the gas sensor, relative intensity noise (RIN) is implemented as a detection parameter. Investigation is performed to determine the effect of injection current, operating temperature, mode spacing, and cavity length on RIN. It has been found that it is best to operate the gas sensor at smaller mode spacing and near the threshold current or at larger mode spacing and far above the threshold current for the use of RIN as the readout parameter.

This paper reports CFD and experimental results of the characteristics of wall confluent jets in a room. The results presented show the behaviour of wall confluent jets in the form of velocity profiles, the spreading rate of jets on the surface, jets decay, etc. The empirical equations derived are compared with other types of air jets. In addition, the flow in wall confluent jets is compared with the flow in displacement ventilation supply, with regards to the vertical and horizontal spreading on the floor. It is concluded that the jet momentum of wall confluent jets can be more conserved than other jets. Thus, wall confluent jets have a greater spread over the floor than displacement flow.

The aim of this review paper is to present experimental methodologies and the mathematical approaches used to determine effective diffusivities of solutes in food materials. The paper commences by describing the diffusion phenomena related to solute mass transfer in foods and effective diffusivities. It then focuses on the mathematical formulation for the calculation of effective diffusivities considering different diffusion models based on Fick's second law of diffusion. Finally, experimental considerations for effective diffusivity determination are elucidated primarily based on the acquirement of a series of solute content versus time curves appropriate to the equation model chosen. Different factors contributing to the determination of the effective diffusivities such as the structure of food material, temperature, diffusion solvent, agitation, sampling, concentration and different techniques used are considered. Intense violet-blue photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature was verified in BaZrO3 (BZO) powders with structural order-disorder. Ab-initio calculations, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and PL were performed. Theoretical results showed that the local disorder in the network-formed Zr clusters present an important role in the formation of hole-electron pair. The experimental data and theoretical results are in agreement, indicating that the PL emission in BZO powders can be related to the structural order-disorder degree in the lattice. The pentrophic membrane (PM) is an anatomical structure surrounding the food bolus in most insects. Rejecting the idea that PM has evolved from coating mucus to play the same protective role as it, novel functions were proposed and experimentally tested. The theoretical principles underlying the digestive enzyme recycling mechanism were described and used to develop an algorithm to calculate enzyme distributions along the midgut and to infer secretory and absorptive sites. The activity of a Spodoptera frugiperda microvillar aminopeptidase decreases by 50% if placed in the presence of midgut contents. S. frugiperda trypsin preparations placed into dialysis bags in stirred and unstirred media have activities of 210 and 160%, respectively, over the activities of samples in a test tube. The ectoperitrophic fluid (EF) present in the midgut caeca of Rhynchosciara americana may be collected. If the enzymes restricted to this fluid are assayed in the presence of PM contents (PMC) their activities decrease by at least 58%. The lack of PM caused by calcofluor feeding impairs growth due to an increase in the metabolic cost associated with the conversion of food into body mass. This probably results from an increase in digestive enzyme excretion and useless homeostatic attempt to reestablish destroyed midgut gradients. The experimental models support the view that PM enhances digestive efficiency by: (a) prevention of non-specific binding of undigested material onto cell Surface; (b) prevention of excretion by allowing enzyme recycling powered by an ectoperitrophic counterflux of fluid; (c) removal from inside PM of the oligomeric molecules that may inhibit the enzymes involved in initial digestion; (d) restriction of oligomer hydrolases to ectoperitrophic space (ECS) to avoid probable partial inhibition by non-dispersed undigested food. Finally,PM functions are discussed regarding insects feeding on any diet. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
