In this paper, we investigated the nonlinear vibrations of a Non-ideal (NIS) electromechanical absorber (NEVA), taking into account a modified mathematical model of (MR) Damper. We observed the presence of the Sornmerfeld effect (it is the steady state frequencies of the DC motor, which it will usually increasing as more power (Voltage) is given to it, in a step-by-step fashion. When a resonance condition it is reached, the better part of this energy it is consumed to generate large amplitude vibrations of the foundation, without sensible change of the motor frequency). The obtained results, by using numerical and analytical simulations, were discussed, in details.

This paper deals with an energy pumping that occurs in a (MEMS) Gyroscope nonlinear dynamical system, modeled with a proof mass constrained to move in a plane with two resonant modes, which are nominally orthogonal. The two modes are ideally coupled only by the rotation of the gyro about the plane's normal vector. We also developed a linear optimal control design for reducing the oscillatory movement of the nonlinear systems to a stable point.

In this work, the problem in the loads transport (in platforms or suspended by cables) it is considered. The system in subject is composed for mono-rail system and was modeled through the system: inverted pendulum, car and motor and the movement equations were obtained through the Lagrange equations. In the model, was considered the interaction among of the motor and system dynamics for several potencies motor, that is, the case studied is denominated a non-ideal periodic problem. The non-ideal periodic problem dynamics was analyzed, qualitatively, through the comparison of the stability diagrams, numerically obtained, for several motor torque constants. Furthermore, one was made it analyzes quantitative of the problem through the analysis of the Floquet multipliers. Finally, the non-ideal problem was controlled. The method that was used for analysis and control of non-ideal periodic systems is based on the Chebyshev polynomial expansion, in the Picard iterative method and in the Lyapunov-Floquet transformation (L-F trans formation). This method was presented recently in [3-9].

In this work, the dynamic behavior of self-synchronization and synchronization through mechanical interactions between the nonlinear self-excited oscillating system and two non-ideal sources are examined by numerical simulations. The physical model of the system vibrating consists of a non-linear spring of Duffing type and a nonlinear damping described by Rayleigh's term. This system is additional forced by two unbalanced identical direct current motors with limited power (non-ideal excitations). The present work mathematically implements the parametric excitation described by two periodically changing stiffness of Mathieu type that are switched on/off. Copyright © 2005 by ASME.

In this work, the linear and nonlinear feedback control techniques for chaotic systems were been considered. The optimal nonlinear control design problem has been resolved by using Dynamic Programming that reduced this problem to a solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. In present work the linear feedback control problem has been reformulated under optimal control theory viewpoint. The formulated Theorem expresses explicitly the form of minimized functional and gives the sufficient conditions that allow using the linear feedback control for nonlinear system. The numerical simulations for the Rössler system and the Duffing oscillator are provided to show the effectiveness of this method. Copyright © 2005 by ASME.

The present paper studies a system comprised of two blocks connected by springs and dampers, and a DC motor with limited power supply fixed on a block, characterizing a non-ideal problem. This DC motor exciting the system causes interactions between the motor and the structure supporting it. Because of that, the non-ideal mathematical formulation of the problem has one and a half extra degree of freedom than the ideal one. A suitable choice of physical parameters leads to internal resonance conditions, that is, its natural frequencies are multiple of each other, by a known integer quantity. The purpose here is to study the dynamic behavior of the system using an analytical method based on perturbation techniques. The literature shows that the averaging method is the more flexible method concerning non-ideal problems. Summarizing, an steady state solution in amplitude and phase coordinates was obtained with averaging method showing the dependence of the structure amplitudes with the rotation frequency of the motor. Moreover, this solution shows that on of the amplitude coordinates has influence in the determination of the stationary rotation frequency. The analytical solution obtained shows the presence of the rotation frequency in expressions representing the oscillations of the structure, and the presence of amplitude coordinates in expressions describing the dynamic motion of the DC motor. These characteristics show the influence not only of the motor on structure but also of the response of the structure on dynamical behavior of the motor. Copyright © 2005 by ASME.

In practical situations, the dynamics of the forcing function on a vibrating system cannot be considered as given a priori, and it must be taken as a consequence of the dynamics of the whole system. In other words, the forcing source has limited power, as that provided by a DC motor for an example, and thus its own dynamics is influenced by that of the vibrating system being forced. This increases the number of degrees of freedom of the problem, and it is called a non-ideal problem. In this work, we considerer two non-ideal problems analyzed by using numerical simulations. The existence of the Sommerfeld effect was verified, that is, the effect of getting stuck at resonance (energy imparted to the DC motor being used to excite large amplitude motions of the supporting structure). We considered two kinds of non-ideal problem: one related to the transverse vibrations of a shaft carrying two disks and another to a piezoceramic bar transducer powered by a vacuum tube generated by a non-ideal source Copyright © 2007 by ASME.

In this paper, a mathematical model is derived via Lagrange's Equation for a shear building structure that acts as a foundation of a non-ideal direct current electric motor, controlled by a mass loose inside a circular carving. Non-ideal sources of vibrations of structures are those whose characteristics are coupled to the motion of the structure, not being a function of time only as in the ideal case. Thus, in this case, an additional equation of motion is written, related to the motor rotation, coupled to the equation describing the horizontal motion of the shear building. This kind of problem can lead to the so-called Sommerfeld effect: steady state frequencies of the motor will usually increase as more power (voltage) is given to it in a step-by-step fashion. When a resonance condition with the structure is reached, the better part of this energy is consumed to generate large amplitude vibrations of the foundation without sensible change of the motor frequency as before. If additional increase steps in voltage are made, one may reach a situation where the rotor will jump to higher rotation regimes, no steady states being stable in between. As a device of passive control of both large amplitude vibrations and the Sommerfeld effect, a scheme is proposed using a point mass free to bounce back and forth inside a circular carving in the suspended mass of the structure. Numerical simulations of the model are also presented Copyright © 2007 by ASME.

SMART material systems offer great possibilities in terms of providing novel and economical solutions to engineering problems. The technological advantages of these materials over traditional ones are due to their unique microstructure and molecular properties. Smart materials such as shape memory alloys (SMA), has been used in such diverse areas of engineering science, nowadays. In this paper, we present a numerical investigation of the dynamics interaction of a nonideal structure (NIS). We analyze the phenomenon of the passage through resonance region in the steady state processes. We remarked that this kind of problem can lead to the so-called Sommerfeld effect: steady state frequencies of the DC motor will usually increase as more power (voltage) is given to it in a step-by-step fashion. When a resonance condition with the structure it is reached, the better part of this energy it is consumed to generate large amplitude vibrations of the foundation without sensible change of the motor frequency as before. In this paper, several computational schemes are presented for the optimal tuning of the global behavior of nonlinear dynamical sys- tems. Specifically, the maximization of the size of domains of attraction associated with invariants in parametrized dynamical sys- tems is addressed. Cell Mapping (CM) tech- niques are used to estimate the size of the domains, and such size is then maximized via different optimization tools. First, a ge- netic algorithm is tested whose performance shows to be good for determining global maxima at the expense of high computa- tional cost. Secondly, an iterative scheme based on a Stochastic Approximation proce- dure (the Kiefer-Wolfowitz algorithm) is eval- uated showing acceptable performance at low cost. Finally, several schemes combining neu- ral network based estimations and optimiza- tion procedures are addressed with promising results. The performance of the methods is illus- trated with two applications: first on the well-known van der Pol equation with stan- dard parametrization, and second the tuning of a controller for saturated systems.

This paper presents a theoretical model on the vibration analysis of micro scale fluid-loaded rectangular isotropic plates, based on the Lamb's assumption of fluid-structure interaction and the Rayleigh-Ritz energy method. An analytical solution for this model is proposed, which can be applied to most cases of boundary conditions. The dynamical experimental data of a series of microfabricated silicon plates are obtained using a base-excitation dynamic testing facility. The natural frequencies and mode shapes in the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical simulations for the lower order modes. The presented theoretical and experimental investigations on the vibration characteristics of the micro scale plates are of particular interest in the design of microplate based biosensing devices. The automated sensing scheme described in this paper has the potential to automatically capture, discriminate and classify transients in gait. The mechanical simplicity of the walking platform offers advantages over standard force plates. There is less restriction on dimensions offering the opportunity for multi-contact and multiple steps. This addresses the challenge of patient targeting and the evaluation of patients in a variety of ambulatory applications. In this work the sensitivity of the distributive tactile sensing method has been investigated experimentally. Using coupled time series data from a small number of sensors, gait patterns are compared with stored templates using a pattern recognition algorithm. By using a neural network these patterns were interpreted classifying normal and affected walking events with an accuracy of just under 90%. This system has potential in gait analysis and rehabilitation as a tool for early diagnosis in walking disorders, for determining response to therapy and for identifying changes between pre and post operative gait.
