The Tandem-GMAW method is the latest development as the consequences of improvements in the welding methods. The twin-wire and then the Tandem-method with the separate power sources has got a remarkable place in the welding of many types of materials with different joint types. The biggest advantage of Tandem welding method is the flexibility of choosing both the electrodes of different types from each other according to the type of the parent material. This is possible because of the feasibility of setting the separate welding parameters for both the wires. In this thesis work the effect of the variation in three parameters on the weld bead in Tandem-GMA welding method is studied. Theses three parameters are the wire feed rate in the slave wire, the wire feed rate in the master wire and the voltage difference in both the wires. The results are then compared to study the behaviour of the weld bead with the change in these parameters.

Tämän työn tavoitteena oli hitsata tandem MAG –laitteistolla 25 mm paksua Ruukin E500 TMCP terästä. Työssä oli tarkoituksena vähentää railotilavuutta mahdollisimman paljon sekä suorittaa testihitsaukset 0.8 kJ/mm sekä 2.5 kJ/mm lämmöntuonneilla. Teoriaosuudessa käsiteltiin Tandem MAG-hitsaukseen, sen tuottavuuteen ja laatukysymyksiin liittyviä asioita sekä siinä perehdyttiin suurlujuusteräksien käyttöön hitsauksessa sekä laivanrakennuksessa. Kokeellisessa osuudessa perehdyttiin hitsauksessa huomattuihin etuihin, ongelmiin sekä ongelmien ratkaisumahdollisuuksiin. Hitsausliitoksen mekaaniset ominaisuudet tutkittiin rikkomattomin sekä rikkovin menetelmin. Alustavat hitsausohjeet luotiin kummallekin lämmöntuonnille. Testaukset aloitettiin 30 º railokulmalla pienentäen kulmaa mahdollisuuksien mukaan. Testauksissa ei saatu hitsattua onnistuneesti alle 30 º railokulmalla. Hitsaustestien aikana huomattiin magneettisen puhalluksen vaikutus hitsaustapahtumaan. Kaasunvirtausnopeuden tuli olla tietyn suuruinen jotta palkokerrokset onnistuivat ilman huokoisuusongelmaa. Pienemmällä lämmöntuonnilla hitsattaessa kaasunvirtausnopeudet olivat tärkeämpiä hitsatessa ylempiä palkokerroksia. Kääntämällä hitsauspoltinta sivuttaissuunnassa 7-10 astetta auttoi ehkäisemään reunahaavan syntymistä. Rikkovista menetelmistä testitulokset olivat hyväksyttyjä kaikkien muiden paitsi päittäishitsin sivutaivutuskokeen osalta.

Diplomityössä tavoitteena oli tutkia kapearailojauhekaaritekniikan soveltuvuutta konepajakäyttöön ja sen vaikutusta hitsauksen tuottavuuteen sekä hitsin mekaanisiin ominaisuuksiin. Työ tehtiin vertailukokeilla, jossa koehitsaukset suoritettiin eri aineenpaksuuksille siten, että jokaiselle tutkimuksen kohteena olleelle materiaalille tehtiin yksi hitsaus käytössä olevalla jauhekaaritekniikalla, jolloin saatiin vertailukohde, johon uutta kapearailotekniikkaa verrattiin. Tulokset osoittivat, että kapearailotekniikalla 1 palko/palkokerros aineenpaksuudeltaan Pl. 60 mm koekappale saatiin hitsattua n. 39 % nopeammin verrattuna perinteiseen tandem -hitsaukseen. Kyseisellä aineenpaksuudella lisäainelangan kulutus oli n. 41 % ja jauheen kulutus n. 71 % pienempi verrattuna perinteiseen X- railohitsaukseen tandem -menetelmällä. Lisäksi tuli esille, että ”palkoa palonpäälle” -tekniikka on kapearailotekniikoista tehokkain, sillä 2 palkoa/palkokerros menetelmässä railon leveyttä jouduttiin leventämään, jolloin kapearailotekniikan pieni railotilavuus menetettiin. Lisäaineen kulutus tälläkin menetelmällä jäi pienemmäksi verrattuna X- railohitsaukseen. Ennalta pelättyä kuonan irtoamisongelmaa ei kapearailohitsauksessa havaittu, vaan kuona irtosi ongelmitta railon kyljistä. Lisäksi kapearailotekniikalla hitsattujen hitsien lujuudet olivat vertailukelpoiset tandem- ja yksilankamenetelmällä hitsattujen hitsien kanssa.

Diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää tandem-MAG-hitsausmenetelmän soveltuvuus isojen levylakanoiden valmistamiseen. Päätavoitteena oli selvittää suurimmat saavutettavat hitsausnopeudet sekä railonvalmistukselle asetettavat vaatimukset kahdella laivanrakennusteräksellä. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin omia hitsauskokeita ja liitokset testattiin luokitusseurojen vaatimusten mukaisesti. Selvitettiin myös syntyvät hitsausmuodonmuutokset sekä edut ja rajoitukset verrattuna laserhitsaukseen. Lisäksi laadittiin ei-synergiselle pulssihitsauslaitteistolle suuntaa-antava synergiakäyrä tätä sovellusta varten hitsauskokeiden perusteella. Tandem-MAG-hitsaus osoittautui erittäin kilpailukykyiseksi hitsausmenetelmäksi sovelluksessa. Magneettisen puhalluksen havaittiin olevan merkittävä häiriötekijä tällä menetelmällä hitsattaessa.

Since the introduction of automatic orbital welding in pipeline application in 1961, significant improvements have been obtained in orbital pipe welding systems. Requirement of more productive welding systems for pipeline application forces manufacturers to innovate new advanced systems and welding processes for orbital welding method. Various methods have been used to make welding process adaptive, such as visual sensing, passive visual sensing, real-time intelligent control, scan welding technique, multi laser vision sensor, thermal scanning, adaptive image processing, neural network model, machine vision, and optical sensing. Numerous studies are reviewed and discussed in this Master’s thesis and based on a wide range of experiments which already have been accomplished by different researches the vision sensor are reported to be the best choice for adaptive orbital pipe welding system. Also, in this study the most welding processes as well as the most pipe variations welded by orbital welding systems mainly for oil and gas pipeline applications are explained. The welding results show that Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and its variants like Surface Tension Transfer (STT) and modified short circuit are the most preferred processes in the welding of root pass and can be replaced to the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) in many applications. Furthermore, dual-tandem gas metal arc welding technique is currently considered the most efficient method in the welding of fill pass. Orbital GTAW process mostly is applied for applications ranging from single run welding of thin walled stainless tubes to multi run welding of thick walled pipes. Flux cored arc welding process is faster process with higher deposition rate and recently this process is getting more popular in pipe welding applications. Also, combination of gas metal arc welding and Nd:YAG laser has shown acceptable results in girth welding of land pipelines for oil and gas industry. This Master’s thesis can be implemented as a guideline in welding of pipes and tubes to achieve higher quality and efficiency. Also, this research can be used as a base material for future investigations to supplement present finding.

Tässä kanditaatintyössä vertaillaan jauhekaari- ja tandem-MIG/MAG-hitsausta kirjallisuustutkimuksena. Vertailun kohteena ovat hitsausprosessien tuottavuus ja kustannukset sekä hitsausprosesseilla saavutettava laatu. Lisäksi kandidaatintyössä esitetään hitsausprosesseille tyypilliset käyttökohteet CASE -esimerkkeinä.

Tämä kandidaatintyö on tutkimus hitsauslankojen kallistuskulmien vaikutuksesta hitsausliitoksen ominaisuuksiin tandem-MAG-pienahitsauksessa S355-rakenneteräkselle. Kokeellinen osuus suoritettiin Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston hitsaustekniikan laboratoriossa jatkotutkimuksena Binbin Yanin diplomityölle ”Influence of wire configurations of welding S355 structural steel with tandem GMAW”. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on määrittää tandem-MAG-hitsauksessa käytettyjen hitsauslankojen kallistuskulmien vaikutus hitsausliitoksen ominaisuuksiin. Teoriaosuuden tavoitteena on selvittää myös muiden hitsausparametrien vaikutus hitsausliitoksen ominaisuuksiin sekä perehtyä hitsisulan käyttäytymiseen terästen tandem-MAG-hitsauksessa.

A rapid, sensitive and specific method for quantifying propylthiouracil in human plasma using methylthiouracil as the internal standard (IS) is described. The analyte and the IS were extracted from plasma by liquid-liquid extraction using an organic solvent (ethyl acetate). The extracts were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) in negative mode (ES-). Chromatography was performed using a Phenomenex Gemini C18 5μm analytical column (4.6mm×150mm i.d.) and a mobile phase consisting of methanol/water/acetonitrile (40/40/20, v/v/v)+0.1% of formic acid. For propylthiouracil and I.S., the optimized parameters of the declustering potential, collision energy and collision exit potential were -60 (V), -26 (eV) and -5 (V), respectively. The method had a chromatographic run time of 2.5min and a linear calibration curve over the range 20-5000ng/mL. The limit of quantification was 20ng/mL. The stability tests indicated no significant degradation. This HPLC-MS/MS procedure was used to assess the bioequivalence of two propylthiouracil 100mg tablet formulations in healthy volunteers of both sexes in fasted and fed state. The geometric mean and 90% confidence interval CI of Test/Reference percent ratios were, without and with food, respectively: 109.28% (103.63-115.25%) and 115.60% (109.03-122.58%) for Cmax, 103.31% (100.74-105.96%) and 103.40% (101.03-105.84) for AUClast. This method offers advantages over those previously reported, in terms of both a simple liquid-liquid extraction without clean-up procedures, as well as a faster run time (2.5min). The LOQ of 20ng/mL is well suited for pharmacokinetic studies. The assay performance results indicate that the method is precise and accurate enough for the routine determination of the propylthiouracil in human plasma. The test formulation with and without food was bioequivalent to reference formulation. Food administration increased the Tmax and decreased the bioavailability (Cmax and AUC).

The aim of this study was to analyze the shear bond strength between commercially pure titanium, with and without laser welding, after airbone-particle abrasion (Al2O3) and 2 indirect composites. Sixty-four specimens were cast and divided into 2 groups with and without laser welding. Each group was divided in 4 subgroups, related to Al2O3 grain size: A - 250 µm; B - 180 µm; C- 110 µm; and D - 50 µm. Composite rings were formed around the rods and light polymerized using UniXS unit. Specimens were invested and their shear bond strength at failure was measured with a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 2.0 mm/min. Statistical analysis was carried out with ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). The highest bond strength means were recorded in 250 µm group without laser welding. The lowest shear bond strength means were recorded in 50 µm group with laser welding. Statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were found between all groups. In conclusion, airborne particle abrasion yielded significantly lower bond strength as the Al2O3 particle size decreased. Shear bond strength decreased in the laser welded specimens.

The possible states in the flow around two identical circular cylinders in tandem arrangements are investigated for configurations in the vicinity of the drag inversion separation. By means of numerical simulations, the hysteresis in the transition between the shedding regimes is studied and the relationship between (three-dimensional) secondary instabilities and shedding regime determination is addressed. The differences observed in the behavior of two- and three-dimensional flows are analyzed, and the regions of bistable flow are delimited. The mechanism of wake-induced vibrations (WIV) of a pair of cylinders in a tandem arrangement is investigated by experiments. A typical WIV response is characterized by a build-up of amplitude persisting to high reduced velocities; this is different from a typical vortex-induced vibration (VIV) response, which occurs in a limited resonance range. We suggest that WIV of the downstream cylinder is excited by the unsteady vortex-structure interactions between the body and the upstream wake. Coherent vortices interfering with the downstream cylinder induce fluctuations in the fluid force that are not synchronized with the motion. A favourable phase lag between the displacement and the fluid force guarantees that a positive energy transfer from the flow to the structure sustains the oscillations. If the unsteady vortices are removed from the wake of the upstream body then WIV will not be excited. An experiment performed in a steady shear flow turned out to be central to the understanding of the origin of the fluid forces acting on the downstream cylinder.

The effect of varying the geometric parameters of helical strakes on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is investigated in this paper. The degree of oscillation attenuation or even suppression is analysed for isolated circular cylinder cases. How a cylinder fitted with strakes behaves when immersed in the wake of another cylinder in tandem arrangement is also investigated and these results are compared to those with a single straked cylinder. The experimental tests are conducted at a circulating water channel facility and the cylindrical models are mounted on a low-damping air bearing elastic base with one degree-of-freedom, restricted to oscillate in the transverse direction to the channel flow. Three strake pitches (p) and heights (h) are tested: p = 5, 10, 15d, and h = 0.1, 0.2, 0.25d. The mass ratio is 1.8 for all models. The Reynolds number range is from 1000 to 10000, and the reduced velocity varies up to 21. The cases with h = 0.1d strakes reduce the amplitude response when compared to the isolated plain cylinder, however the oscillation still persists. On the other hand, the cases with h = 0.2, 0.25d strakes almost completely suppress VIV. Spanwise vorticity fields, obtained through stereoscopic digital particle image velocimetry (SDPIV), show an alternating vortex wake for the p = 10d and h = 0.1d straked cylinder. The p = 10d and h = 0.2d cylinder wake has separated shear layers with constant width and no roll-up close to the body. The strakes do not increase the magnitude of the out-of-plane velocity compared to the isolated plain cylinder. However, they deflect the flow in the out-of-plane direction in a controlled way, which can prevent the vortex shedding correlation along the span. In order to investigate the wake interference effect on the strake efficiency, an experimental arrangement with two cylinders in tandem is employed. The centre-to-centre distance for the tandem arrangement varies from 2 to 6. When the downstream p = 10d and h = 0.2d cylinder is immersed in the wake of an upstream fixed plain cylinder, it loses its effectiveness compared with the isolated case. Although the oscillations have significant amplitude, they are limited, which is a different behaviour from that of a tandem configuration with two plain cylinders. For this particular case, the amplitude response monotonically increases for all gaps, except one, a trait usually found in galloping-like oscillations. Direct stability analysis and numerical simulations have been employed to identify and characterize secondary instabilities in the wake of the flow around two identical circular cylinders in tandem arrangements. The centre-to-centre separation was varied from 1.2 to 10 cylinder diameters. Four distinct regimes were identified and salient cases chosen to represent the different scenarios observed, and for each configuration detailed results are presented and compared to those obtained for a flow around an isolated cylinder. It was observed that the early stages of the wake transition changes significantly if the separation is smaller than the drag inversion spacing. The onset of the three-dimensional instabilities were calculated and the unstable modes are fully described. In addition, we assessed the nonlinear character of the bifurcations and physical mechanisms are proposed to explain the instabilities. The dependence of the critical Reynolds number on the centre-to-centre separation is also discussed.
