Direct assembly of a metallodendrimer encompassing seven triruthenium clusters units

A general strategy for the assembly of dendrimeric metallo-cluster species based on tritopic trinuclear ruthenium acetate complexes is demonstrated. First, a central core consisting of a [Ru3O(CH3COO)(6)(TPEB)(3)]PF6 complex (G0), where TPEB is the tripodal 1,3,5-tri-4-pyridyl-1,2-ethenylbenzene ligand, was synthesized and then reacted with the end-capping complex [Ru3O(CH3COO)(6)(py)(2)(MeOH)]PF6, thus composing the first generation shell of a dendrimer encompassing twenty-one ruthenium ions (G1). The core and dendrimeric complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, UV-Vis, H-1 NMR, ESI-MS spectrometry and Differential pulse voltammetry. All results were consistent with the structure of that multinuclear cationic dendrimeric species. The isotopologic profile of daughter fragments and the strength of the metal-ligand bonds were carefully investigated providing the fragmentation pathway for the metallo-dendrimer upon ESI-MS dissociation conditions. Triangular ruthenium acetate clusters containing the bis(pyridyl)propane ligand and their inclusion chemistry with beta-cyclodextrin

The triruthenium carboxylate cluster [Ru(3)O(OAc)(6)(py)(2)(bpp)](+) (OAc = acetate) containing the bridging 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp) ligand, and its dimeric species [{Ru(3)O(OAc)(6)(py(2))}(2)(mu-bpp)](2+) were synthesized in order to investigate their inclusion compounds with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD). Characterization of the complexes was carried out based on spectroscopic, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques, while the formation of inclusion complexes was evaluated using (1)H NMR/NOESY spectroscopy. Since bpp is a flexible ligand, a DFT study was carried out in order to characterize its conformational isomers and their possible role in the host-guest chemistry with beta-CD. Instead of observing the formation of inclusion compounds with different stoichiometries, we observed the formation of 1:1 bpp/beta-CD compounds in which the bpp ligand assumes different conformations. The assembly of polymetallic rotaxane species was successfully demonstrated by monitoring the (1)H NMR spectra of the monomeric cluster species in the presence of aquapentacyanoferrate(II) ions and beta-CD.

Electrochemically activated coordenative assembly of a triruthenium cluster metallopolymer

A general strategy for electrochemically induced assembly of coordination metallopolymers is demonstrated using the tritopic bridging [Ru-3(mu(3)-O)(CH3COO)(6)(pytpy)(3)](+) cluster complex, where pytpy is the 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine ligand, and iron(III) ions. The concept of such an electrochemically induced coordinative assembly was proven exploring the large difference in the [Fe(pytpy)2 complex formation constants depending on the iron ion oxidation state. Much more stable bridging complexes are formed in the presence of Fe(II) in contrast to Fe(III) ions. The build-up of electrochemically active films on FTO electrodes was confirmed by the growth of the corresponding voltammetric peaks concomitantly with the rise of typical triruthenium cluster and [Fe(pytpy)(2)](2+) complex absorption bands. The metallopolymer was constituted by agglomerates of more or less fused tape like structures, exhibiting large voids and pinholes, as revealed by SEM and AFM images. The adhesion/deposition on FTO was improved by functionalizing the surface with TES-tpy and HOOC-tpy, which increased the surface coverage up to 80%, as estimated by impedance spectroscopy. Organometallic chemistry of chiral diphosphazane ligands: Synthesis and structural characterisation

The diphosphazane ligands of the type, (C20H12O2)PN(R)P(E)Y2 (R = CHMe2 or (S)-*CHMePh; E = lone pair or S; Y2 = O2C20H12 or Y = OC6H5 or OC6H4Me-4 or OC6H4OMe-4 or OC6H4But-4 or C6H5) bearing axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2′-dioxy moiety have been synthesised. The structure and absolute configuration of a diastereomeric palladium complex, [PdCl2{ηsu2}-((O2C20H12)PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPh2] has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The reactions of [CpRu(PPh3)2Cl] with various symmetrical and unsymmetrical diphosphazanes of the type, X2PN(R)PYY′ (R = CHMe2 or (S)-*CHMePh; X = C6H5 or X2 = O2C20H12; Y=Y′= C6H5 or Y = C6H5, Y′ = OC6H4Me-4 or OC6H3Me2-3,5 or N2C3HMe2-3,5) yield several diastereomeric neutral or cationic half-sandwich ruthenium complexes which contain a stereogenic metal center. In one case, the absolute configuration of a trichiral ruthenium complex, viz. [Cp*Ruη2-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)*PPh (N2C3HMe2-3,5)Cl] is established by X-ray diffraction. The reactions of Ru3(CO)12 with the diphosphazanes (C20H12O2)PN(R)PY2 (R = CHMe2orMe; Y2=O2C20H12or Y= OC6H5 or OC6H4Me-4 or OC6H4OMe-4 or OC6H4But-4 or C6H5) yield the triruthenium clusters [Ru3(CO)10{η-(O2C20H12)PN(R)PY2}], in which the diphosphazane ligand bridges two metal centres. Palladium allyl chemistry of some of these chiral ligands has been investigated. The structures of isomeric η3-allyl palladium complexes, [Pd(η3-l,3-R′2-C3H3){η2-(rac)-(02C20H12)PN(CHMe2)PY2}](PF6) (R′ = Me or Ph; Y = C6H5 or OC6H5) have been elucidated by high field two-dimensional NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic studies.

Can mass dissociation patterns of transition-metal complexes be predicted from electrochemical data?

The Cooks kinetic method has been very convenient to correlate the relative dissociation rates obtained by collision-induced fragmentation experiments with the energies of two related bonds in molecules and complexes in the gas phase. Reliable bond energy data are, however, not always available, particularly for polynuclear transition-metal complexes, such as the triruthenium acetate clusters of the general formula [Ru(3) (mu(3)-O)(mu-CH(3)COO)(6)(py)(2)(L)](+), where L = ring substituted N-heterocyclic ligands. Accordingly, their gas-phase collision-induced tandem mass spectrometry (CID MS/MS) dissociation patterns have been analyzed pursuing a relationship with the more easily accessible redox potentials (E(1/2)) and Lever`s E(L) parameters. In fact, excellent linear correlations of In(1/2A(L)/A(py)), where A(py) and A(L) are the abundance of the fragments retaining the pyridine (py) and L ligand, respectively, with E(1/2) and E(L) were found. This result shows that those electrochemical parameters are correlated with bond energies and can be used in the analysis of the dissociation data. Such modified Cooks method can be used, for example, to determine the electronic effects of substituents on the metal-ligand bonds for a series of transition-metal complexes. (5,10,15,20-Tetra(4-pyridil)porphinato)manganes(III) acetate modified by four mu(3)-oxo-triruthenium acetate clusters: synthesis, characterization, electrochemical behavior and catalytic activity

A novel supermolecule constituted by four mu(3)-oxo-triruthenium acetate clusters coordinated to manganese(III)-meso -tetra(4-pyridil)porphyrin acetate ([MnTPyP]CH3COO) has been synthesized. Characterization has been performed by UV-Vis and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior (cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry) in N,N'-dimethylformamide has been analyzed in terms of five redox processes: three related to peripheral clusters (Ru-IV,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-II,Ru-II) and two centered on the Mn-porphyrin core ((MnP)-P-III/(MnP)-P-II/(MnP2-)-P-II). A direct comparison has been performed between MnTCP and MnTPyP as catalysts for the cyclooctene and cyclohexane oxidation reactions. The improved selectivity exhibited by the supramolecular catalyst for cyclohexane oxidation has been ascribed to electronic effects on the oxomanganese(V) porphyrin species induced by the four peripheral clusters, in the formal (RuRuRuIII)-Ru-IV-Ru-III oxidation state. The syntheses, structures and redox properties of phosphine-gold(I) and triruthenium-carbonyl cluster derivatives of tolans

The syntheses of several ethynyl-gold(I) phosphine substituted tolans (1,2-diaryl acetylenes) of general form [Au(C=CC6H4C=CC6H4X)(PPh3)] are described [X = Me (2a), OMe (2b), CO2Me (2c), NO2 (2d), CN (2e)]. These complexes react readily with [Ru-3(CO) 10(mu-dppm)] to give the heterometallic clusters [Ru3(mu-AuPPh3)(mu-eta(1), eta(2)-C2C6H4C, CC6H4X)(CO)(7)(mu-dppm)] (3a-e). The crystallographically determined molecular structures of 2b, 2d, 2e and 3a-e are reported here, that of 2a having been described on a previous occasion. Structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical studies were conducted and have revealed little electronic interaction between the remote substituent and the organometallic end-caps. Individual firms and regional business clusters : the HRM advantage in rent generation

Much of the literature on clusters has focused on the economic advantages of clusters and how these can be achieved in terms of competition, regional development and local spillovers. Some studies have focused at the level of the individual firm however human resource management (HRM) in individual clustered firms has received scant attention. This paper innovatively utilises the extended Resource Based View (RBV) of the firm as a framework to conceptualise the human resource processes of individual firms within a cluster. RBV is argued as a useful tool as it explains external rents outside a firm’s boundaries. The paper concludes that HRM can assist in generating rents for firms and clusters more broadly when the function supports valuable interfirm relationships important for realising inter-firm advantages.

Working memory correlates of three symptom clusters in schizophrenia

Examined whether discrete working memory deficits underlie positive, negative and disorganised symptoms of schizophrenia. 52 outpatients (mean age 37.5 yrs) with schizophrenia were studied using items drawn from the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Linear regression and correlational analyses were conducted to examine whether symptom dimension scores were related to performance on several tests of working memory function. Severity of negative symptoms correlated with reduced production of words during a verbal fluency task, impaired ability to hold letter and number sequences on-line and manipulate them simultaneously, reduced performance during a dual task, and compromised visuospatial working memory under distraction-free conditions. Severity of disorganisation symptoms correlated with impaired visuospatial working memory under conditions of distraction, failure of inhibition during a verbal fluency task, perseverative responding on a test of set-shifting ability, and impaired ability to judge the veracity of simple declarative statements. The present study provides evidence that the positive, negative and disorganised symptom dimensions of the PANSS constitute independent clusters, associated with unique patterns of working memory impairment.

This paper considers the history of the cluster concept in urban economic geography, and its relationship to recent debates about creative cities. It then looks at the role that universities can play in the development of a creative cluster, as well as some of the potential pitfalls.

Understanding the creative economy : a tale of two cities clusters

This article investigates underlying constraints within China’s creative economy. Drawing on two studies of creative clusters in Suzhou and Foshan, it identifies the importance of knowledge transfer and internationalization to the generation of higher value-added products and services. Both examples illustrate relationships between resources, activities, routines and entrepreneurship. The article argues that the examples notwithstanding, the vast majority of what is accounted for in data collection as China’s creative industries are more appropriately cultural industries. The focus on cultural industries drives local development and increases land values but the benefits are rarely dispersed internationally or into the broader economy.

Great adaptations : China's creative clusters and the new social contract

The transformation of China's urban landscape has witnessed a boom in cultural adaptation, namely the adaptation of a Western idea, the creative cluster. This chapter examines the formatting of hundreds of creative clusters-art centres, animation bases, cultural zones, and incubators. The cluster has important implications for how we understand China going forward into the second decade of the 21st century. The cluster phenomenon has resulted in to a substantive remaking of the social contract, between officials, entrepreneurs, local residents, academics-and most significantly cultural producers. However, these processes of adaption are mostly driven by real estate developers working in partnership with local government officials. Cut and paste design is the fast road to completion. In this sense, the description 'creative' may well be redundant.

The creative industries are important because they are clustered at the point of attraction for a billion or more young people around the world. They're the drivers of demographic, economic and political change. They start from the individual talent of the creative artist and the individual desire and aspiration of the audience. These are the raw materials for innovation, change and emergent culture, scaled up to form new industries and coordinated into global markets based on social networks.
