This paper demonstrates the role of solvent in selectivity and sensitivity of a series of electron-rich compounds for the detection of trace amounts of picric acid. Two new electron-rich fluorescent esters (6, 7) containing a triphenylamine backbone as well as their analogous carboxylic acids (8, 9) have been synthesized and characterized. Fluorescent triphenylamine coupled with an ethynyl moiety constitutes p-electron-rich selective and sensitive probes for electron-deficient picric acid (PA). In solution, the high sensitivity of all the sensors toward PA can be attributed to a combined effect of the ground-state charge-transfer complex formation and resonance energy transfer between the sensor and analyte. The acids 8 and 9 also showed enhanced sensitivity for nitroaromatics in the solid state, and their enhanced sensitivity could be attributed to exciton migration due to close proximity of the neighboring acid molecules, as evident from the X-ray diffraction study. The compounds were found to be quite sensitive for the detection of trace amount of nitroaromatics in solution, solid, and contact mode.

The synthesis and characterization of novel acid-base polyimide membranes for the use in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell is presented in this paper. The sulfonated polyimides (SPIs) bearing basic triphenylamine groups were easily synthesized using 4,4'-binaphthyl-1,1',8,8'-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), sulfonated diamine of 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether-2,2'-disulfonic acid (ODADS), and nonsulfonated diamines of 4,4'-diaminotriphenylamine (DATPA). The effects of the structure of the dianhydride and diamines on the properties of SPI membranes were evaluated through the study of membrane parameters including water sorption, proton conductivity, water stability, dimensional changes, and methanol permeability.

Two simple triphenylamine/oxadiazole derivatives were synthesized and fully characterized; their multifunctionality as highly efficient non-doped blue fluorescence, excellent red phosphorescent host and single-doped two-color based white OLEDs has been demonstrated.

A fully diarylmethylene-bridged triphenylamine derivative is efficiently synthesized. It has an almost planar triphenylamine (TPA) skeleton and exhibits excellent thermal and morphological stability. Devices with the novel TPA derivative as host material and Ir(ppy)(3) as triplet emitter show a maximum current efficiency of 83.5 cd/A and a maximum power efficiency of 71.4 Im/W for green electrophosphorescence.

A conjugated poly(p-CN-phenylenevinylene) (PCNPV) containing both electron-donating triphenylamine units and electron-withdrawing cyano groups was prepared via Knoevenagel condensation in a good yield. Gel permeation chromatography suggested that the soluble polymer had a very high weight-average molecular weight of 309,000. A bright and saturated red emission was observed under UV excitation in solution and film. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the polymer presented quasi-reversible oxidation with a relatively low potential because of the triphenylamine unit. A single-layer indium tin oxide/PCNPV/Mg-Ag device emitted a bright red light (633 nm).

A novel bipolar conjugated polymer containing triphenylamine and 1, 3, 4-oxadiazole units was synthesized by Suzuki reaction. Its structure and properties were characterized by NMR, IR, UV-Vis, PL spectroscopy and electrochemical measurement. The photo luminescent spectroscopy and cyclic voltammograms measurement demonstrated that the resulting polymer shows blue emission (477 nm) and possesses both electron and hole-transporting property.

A series of light-emitting poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s with triphenylamine units as hole-transporting moieties in the main chain were synthesized via Wittig condensation in good yields. The newly formed vinylene double bonds possessed a trans configuration, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The high glass-transition temperature (83-155 degreesC) and high decomposition temperature (> 300 degreesC) suggested that the resulting copolymers possessed high thermal stability. These copolymers, especially TAAPV1, possessed a high weight-average molecular weight (47,144) and a low polydispersity index (1.55). All the copolymers could be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and toluene, and exhibited intense photoluminesence in THF (the emission maxima were located from 478 to 535 nm) and in film (from 478 to 578 nm). The low onsets of the oxidation potential (0.6-0.75 V) suggested that the alternating copolymers possessed a good hole-transporting property due to the incorporation of triphenylamine moieties. Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit konnte die neuartige Synthese von Triphyenylamin- und Triazin-Monomeren gezeigt werden. Die hergestellten Monomere konnten sowohl frei als auch lebend radikalisch polymerisiert werden, wodurch sich aus beiden Verbindungen Blockcopolymere herstellen ließen. Mittels GPC und DSC Messungen konnte die erhaltene Blockstruktur nachgewiesen werden. In Cyclovoltammetrie Messungen konnten die Elektronen-leitenden und Loch-leitenden Eigenschaften der Homopolymere nachgewiesen werden. Darüber hinaus war es mit diesen Messungen möglich, die Elektronen-leitenden und Loch-leitenden Blöcke dieser Blockcopolymere gezielt anzusprechen.Weiterhin wurden zwei neue Strukturierungsverfahren für Polymere entwickelt. In dem ersten Verfahren wurden dabei harte Siliziumstempel benutzt, so dass Strukturen im Nanometerbereich generiert werden konnten. Der gesamte Strukturierungsprozess konnte bei Raumtemperatur durchgeführt werden, was einen wesentlichen Zeitvorteil gegenüber NIL entspricht. Weiterhin wurden Linienstrukturen durch das Stempeln mit weichen Silikonstempeln hergestellt. Unabhängig ihrer Herstellungsmethode wirken diese Linienstrukturen als Orientierungsschichten für flüssigkristallines Polyfluoren, wobei die bis heute größte Fluoreszens-Anisotropie auf einem Lochleiter von 1:24 erhalten wurde. Somit sind OLEDs die polarisiertes Licht emittieren möglich.Im zweiten neuartigen Strukturierungsverfahren konnten getrennte Polymerstrukturen aus Loch- und Elektronenleitern durch Bestrahlen einer Monomermischung mit Licht erzeugt werden. Dieses Verfahren bietet den Vorteil, dass kein Material entfernt werden muss und die Strukturierung somit in einem Schritt erfolgt.

The synthesis and characterisation of 2,5-bis(5′-hexyl-[2,2′- bithiophen]-5-yl)pyridine (Th4PY) and its use as a blue emitter in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) is reported. Th4PY was synthesised in high yield using a straightforward Suzuki coupling route with commercially available starting materials. As Th4PY is both soluble and has low molecular weight, blue OLEDs were fabricated using both spin-coating and vacuum deposition thin film processing techniques to study the effect of processing on device performance. OLED devices using a spin-coated layer consisting of 4′,4′′- tris(N-carbazolyl)triphenylamine (TCTA) and 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert- butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) as a host matrix together with Th4PY as emitter exhibited highly efficient sky-blue emission with a low turn-on voltage of 3V, a maximum brightness close to 15000cdm-2 at 8V, and a maximum luminous efficiency of 7.4cdA -1 (6.3lmW -1) with CIE coordinates of x≤0.212, y≤0.320. The device performance characteristics are compared using various matrices and processing techniques. The promising sky-blue OLED performance, solution processability, and ambient stability make Th4PY a promising blue emitter for application in OLEDs.

The design and two-component [2 + 3] self-assembly of a series of new organometallic molecular prisms (3a-d) are described. Assemblies 3a,b incorporate 4,4',4'-tris[ethynyl-trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)]triphenylamine (1a) containing a Pt-ethynyl functionality as tritopic planar acceptor and organic ``clips'' 2a and 2b, respectively [where 2a = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl)isophthalic amide; 2b= 1,3-bis(ethynyl-3-pyridyl)benzene]. In a complementary approach all organic tritopic planar donor ligand 2c [2c 4,4',4'-tris(4-pyridylethynyl)triphenylamine] was assembled with all organometallic ``clip'', 1,8-bis[{trans-Pt(PEt3) (2)(NO3)}ethynyl]anthracene (1b), to obtain prism 3c. A organometallic carbon-centered acceptor, 1,1,1- tris[4-{trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(NO3)}ethynylphenyl]ethane (1c), has been prepared, and its prism derivative (3d) using an organic `clip'' is prepared. Assemblies (3a-d) were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. 3a-d showed fluorescence behavior in solution, and quenching of fluorescence intensity (3a,3c-d) was noticed upon addition of TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene), a common constituent of many commercial explosives. A thin film of the assembly 3d made by spin coating of a solution of 3 x 10(-5) M in DMF on it 1 cm(2) quartz plate showed fluorescence response to the vapor of TNT.

The interaction of iodine with triphenylamine ,tripheny lphosphine, triphenylarsine and triphenystibine has been investigated by electronic spectroscopy. Transformation of the outer charge-transfer complexes to the inner complexes (quarternary salts) has been examined. The relations of the ionization potentials of the donors with the hvc.t have been discussed and various c.t. parameters have been estimated. Hydrogen bonding of these donors with phenol have been reported.
