Dealuminated beta zeolites exchanged with Pd and Fe were prepared to investigate the influence of iron and dealumination on the activity and selectivity of Pd/BEA zeolite for toluene total oxidation. The specific areas determined by BET method and EPR studies allowed to know that the palladium would be more easily agglomerated on the BEA than on the DBEA. Moreover, a quantification of the palladium saturation on the BEA zeolite was deduced by EPR. Effects of dynamic and static oxidation and weak and strong reduction treatments were studied by EPR. Several isolated and interacted Pd+ species and hole centers were detected. The Pd was much reduced after the catalytic test in dealuminated and Fe doped samples. This result could be directly correlated to the catalytic deactivation. The deactivation could be also explain by the type of coke deposed on the catalyst and by the hydroscopic behavior of the samples. Addition of Fe or dealumination could prevent the deactivation and then lead to better catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

A range of catalysts based on Pd nanoparticles supported on inorganic supports such as BETA and ZSM-5 zeolites, a silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieve (SAPO-5) and γ-alumina as a standard support have been tested for the total oxidation of naphthalene (100 ppm, total flow 50 ml/min) showing a conversion to carbon dioxide of 100% between 165 and 180 °C for all the analysed catalysts. From the combined use of zeolites with PVP polymer protected Pd based nanoparticles, enhanced properties have been found for the total abatement of naphthalene in contrast with other kinds of catalysts. A Pd/BETA catalyst has been demonstrated to have excellent activity, with a high degree of stability, as shown by time on line experiments maintaining 100% conversion to CO2 during the 48 h tested.

A study on the preparation of thin films of ZSM-5 and BETA zeolites, and a SAPO-5 silicoaluminophosphate, supported on cordierite honeycomb monoliths by in situ synthesis was carried out for their use as catalyst supports. Furthermore γ-Al2O3 was also coated onto a cordierite honeycomb monolith by a dip-coating method for use as a standard support. Structured monolithic catalysts were prepared by impregnation of the aforementioned coated monoliths with polymer-protected Pd nanoparticles. The monolithic catalysts have been tested for the total oxidation of naphthalene (100 ppm, GHSV 1220 h−1). From the combined use of the zeolite with polymer-protected nanoparticles, enhanced catalytic properties have been found for the total abatement of naphthalene. The Pd/MBETA and Pd/MZSM-5 catalytic monoliths have shown excellent activity with a high degree of stability, even after undergoing accelerated ageing experiments.

Catalysts consisting in platinum supported on cerium oxide highly dispersed on activated carbon, with a Pt loading of 1 wt.% and ceria loadings of 5, 10 and 20 wt.% have been prepared by impregnation method and characterized by several techniques (N2 adsorption at 77 K, ICP, XRD, H2-TPR and XPS). Their catalytic behavior has been evaluated in the total oxidation of ethanol and toluene after reduction at 473 K. The obtained results show that the prepared catalysts have better performances than platinum supported on bulk CeO2. The best catalytic performance was obtained for 10 wt.% ceria loading, likely due to an optimum synergistic interaction between highly dispersed cerium oxide and platinum particles. Pt-10Ce/C achieves total conversion of ethanol and toluene to CO2 at 433 K and 453 K, respectively, and shows no deactivation during a test for 100 h. Under humid conditions (relative humidity, RH, of 40 and 80%), the activity was only slightly influenced due to the hydrophobic character of the activated carbon support, which prevents the adsorption of water.

Copper-based catalysts supported on niobium-doped ceria have been prepared and tested in the preferential oxidation of CO in excess of H2 (PROX) and in total oxidation of toluene. Supports and catalysts have been characterized by several techniques: N2 adsorption, ICP-OES, XRF, XRD, Raman Spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, H2-TPR and XPS, and their catalytic performance has been measured in PROX, with an ideal gas mixture (CO, O2 and H2) with or without CO2 and H2O, and in total oxidation of toluene. The effects of the copper loading and the amount of niobium in the supports have been evaluated. Remarkably, the addition of niobia to the catalysts may improve the catalytic performance in total oxidation of toluene. It allows us to prepare cheaper catalysts (niobia it is far cheaper than ceria) with improved catalytic performance.

By characterizing fresh and used Mo/HMCM-22 catalysts with ICP-AES, XRD, NH3-TPD technique, UV - Vis DRS and UV Raman spectroscopy, the reactivity of Mo species for methane partial oxidation into formaldehyde were directly studied with a new point of view. By comparing the fresh and used catalysts, it was found that the tetrahedral Mo species bonding chemically to the support surface were practically unchanged after the reaction, while the polymolybdate octahedral Mo species, which had a rather weak interaction with the MCM-22 zeolite, leached out during the reaction, especially when the Mo loading was high. Correspondingly, it was found from the time-on-stream reaction data that the HCHO yield remained unchanged, while COx decreased with the reaction time during the reaction. By combining the characterization results and the reaction data, it can be drawn that the isolated tetrahedral molybdenum oxo-species (T-d) is responsible for HCHO formation, while the octahedral polyoxomolybdate species (O-h) will lead to the total oxidation of methane.

The ceria modified Pt/CeO2/Al2O3 and Pt/Al2O3 catalysts were studied in the partial oxidation of methane to syngas. The SEM, XRD, TPR and TPD techniques were used for the catalyst characterization. The addition of ceria could enhance the Pt dispersion and decrease the Pt crystallise size; the activity and selectivity of catalyst for partial oxidation were improved significantly, and the methane total oxidation was suppressed sharply. The ceria effect was also discussed in a detailed way.

Adsorption and oxidation of chlorobenzene on Al(2)O(3), TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3), and MnO(x)/TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3) have been studied by in situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. At room temperature, chlorobenzene is only physisorbed on Al(2)O(3), TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3), and MnO(x)/TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3), and gives the same IR spectrum as that for liquid-phase chlorobenzene. On Al(2)O(3) no further interaction and reaction take place with treatment, at higher temperatures (up to 773 K), while phenolates are observed for TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3) and MnO(x)/TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3) at 773 K. When the adsorbed chlorobenzene coexists with oxygen, formates are detected for Al(2)O(3), while acetates are additionally observed for TiO(2-)Al(2)O(3) above 573 K. For MnO(x)/TiO(2-)Al(2)O(3), maleates are present at 573 And 673 K, while formates and acetates develop at 473 and 573 K. Almost all IR bands due to formates, acetates, and maleates disappear at 773 K, indicating that these oxygen-containing species are potential intermediates for the total oxidation of chlorobenzene.

Total oxidation of chlorinated aromatics on supported manganese oxide catalysts was investigated. The catalysts have been prepared by wet impregnation method and characterized by XRD and TPR. Among the catalysts with the supports of TiO(2), Al(2)O(3) and SiO(2), titania supported catalyst (MnO(x)/TiO(2)) gives the highest catalytic activity. MnO(x)/TiO(2) (Mn loading, 1.9 wt.%) shows the total oxidation of chlorobenzene at about 400 degreesC. The activity can be stable for over 82 h except for the first few hours. At lower Mn loadings for MnO(x)/TiO(2), only one reduction peak appears at about 400 degreesC due to the highly dispersed manganese oxide. With the increase of Mn loading, another reduction peak emerges at about 500 degreesC, which is close to the reduction peak of bulk Mn(2)O(3) at 520 degreesC. TPR of the used catalyst is totally different from that of the fresh one indicating that the chemical state of the active species is changed during the chlorobenzene oxidation. The characterization studies of MnO(x)/TiO(2) showed that the highly dispersed MnO(x) is the precursor of the active phase, which can be converted into the active phase, mainly oxychlorinated manganese (MnO(y)Cl(z)), under working conditions of chlorobenzene oxidation. Various mesoporous catalysts with vanadium loadings between 0.5 and 6 V wt.% and surface areas around 1300 m(2)/g were synthesized using the isomorphous substitution (IS) and molecular designed dispersion (MDD) techniques. Their catalytic properties were tested using toluene as a model VOC in a fixed bed reactor at temperatures between 300 and 550 degrees C. It was found that during the oxidation of toluene, over V-HMS synthesized via IS, conversion of toluene mainly results in carbon oxides, benzene, benzaldehyde and water. Total conversion is greatly improved when the vanadium content is increased from around 1.5 to 3.0 wt.%, but an increase in the textural porosity (V-TEX/V-MESO) from 0.3 to 0.6 had no discernable effect on the conversion. This can be explained by the fact that a V-TEX/V-MESO as low as 0.3 is sufficient to facilitate the access of toluene into the framework confined mesopores without any molecular transport limitations. However, when using V-HMS synthesized by MDD, conversion of toluene is greatly improved when the V-TEX/ V-MESO ratio is increased from 0.1 to 0.6. This is because the diffusion limitations are minimized by this increase. V-HMS synthesized via MDD does not exhibit selectivity to benzaldehyde, favoring total oxidation to CO and CO2. This different oxidation mechanism can be explained in terms of location, accessibility and number of active species on the surface of the HMS support. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A highly active catalyst, MnOx/TiO2-Al2O3, was prepared by impregnating MnOx species on TiO2-modified Al2O3. The TiO2 species in TiO2-Al2O3 support is in a monolayer dispersion, and the MnOx species is again highly dispersed on TiO2-Al2O3 Support. The total oxidation of chlorobenzene and o-dichlorobenzene on MnOx/TiO2-Al2O3 catalyst can be achieved at 300 degreesC and 250 degreesC respectively, at the space velocity of 8000 h(-1). The activity of MnOx/TiO2-Al2O3 catalyst (Mn loading 11.2 wt%) is gradually increased in the first 10-20 h and then keeps stable at least for the measured 52 h at 16,000 h(-1). Furthermore, no chlorinated organic byproducts are detected in the effluent during the oxidative destruction of chlorobenzene and o-dichlorobenzene. It is proposed that the partially chlorinated and highly dispersed manganese oxide on a monolayer TiO2-modified Al2O3 is responsible for the high and stable activity for the total oxidation of chlorinated aromatics.
