A computational interface, using sybyl format as an input file, was created in order to calculate connectivity indexes. After generation and classification of all substructures, which derive from the molecular structure, this interface calculates all possible orders from zero up to the maximun number of bonds in the molecule. Other topological indexes such as Wiener and Schultz indexes can also be calculated.

Worldwide, tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death among curable infectious diseases. Multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an emerging problem of great importance to public health, and there is an urgent need for new anti-TB drugs. In the present work, classical 2D quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) and hologram QSAR (HQSAR) studies were performed on a training set of 91 isoniazid derivatives. Significant statistical models (classical QSAR, q(2) = 0.68 and r(2) = 0.72; HQSAR, q(2) = 0.63 and r(2) = 0.86) were obtained, indicating their consistency for untested compounds. The models were then used to evaluate an external test set containing 24 compounds which were not included in the training set, and the predicted values were in good agreement with the experimental results (HQSAR, r(pred)(2) = 0.87; classical QSAR, r(pred)(2) = 0.75).

A new criterion has been recently proposed combining the topological instability (lambda criterion) and the average electronegativity difference (Delta e) among the elements of an alloy to predict and select new glass-forming compositions. In the present work, this criterion (lambda.Delta e) is applied to the Al-Ni-La and Al-Ni-Gd ternary systems and its predictability is validated using literature data for both systems and additionally, using own experimental data for the Al-La-Ni system. The compositions with a high lambda.Delta e value found in each ternary system exhibit a very good correlation with the glass-forming ability of different alloys as indicated by their supercooled liquid regions (Delta T(x)) and their critical casting thicknesses. In the case of the Al-La-Ni system, the alloy with the largest lambda.Delta e value, La(56)Al(26.5)Ni(17.5), exhibits the highest glass-forming ability verified for this system. Therefore, the combined lambda.Delta e criterion is a simple and efficient tool to select new glass-forming compositions in Al-Ni-RE systems. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. The transport properties of the ""inverted"" semiconductor HgTe-based quantum well, recently shown to be a two-dimensional topological insulator, are studied experimentally in the diffusive regime. Nonlocal transport measurements are performed in the absence of magnetic field, and a large signal due to the edge states is observed. This shows that the edge states can propagate over a long distance, similar to 1 mm, and therefore, there is no difference between local and nonlocal electrical measurements in a topological insulator. In the presence of an in-plane magnetic field a strong decrease of the local resistance and complete suppression of the nonlocal resistance is observed. We attribute this behavior to an in-plane magnetic-field-induced transition from the topological insulator state to a conventional bulk metal state.

A combination of an extension of the topological instability ""lambda criterion"" and a thermodynamic criterion were applied to the Al-La system, indicating the best range of compositions for glass formation. Alloy compositions in this range were prepared by melt-spinning and casting in an arc-melting furnace with a wedge-section copper mold. The GFA of these samples was evaluated by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the gamma* parameter of compositions with high GFA is higher, corresponding to a range in which the lambda parameter is greater than 0.1, which are compositions far from Al solid solution. A new alloy was identified with the best GFA reported so far for this system, showing a maximum thickness of 286 mu m in a wedge-section copper mold. The different types of thermal crystallisation behaviours observed during continuous heating of M-based metallic glasses have been successfully associated with the topological instability. criterion, which is simply calculated from the alloy composition and metallic radii of the alloying elements and aluminium. In the present work, we report on new results evidencing the correlation between the values of X and the crystallisation behaviours in Al-based alloys of the Al-Ni-Ce system and we compare the glass-forming abilities of alloys designed with compositions corresponding to the same topological instability condition. The results are discussed in terms of compositional and topological aspects emphasizing the relevance of the different types of clusters in the amorphous phase in defining the stability of the glass and the types of thermal crystallisation. In this paper, we report the remarkable agreement of the glass forming ability of binary alloys with a new criterion that combines the topological instability parameter (lambda) and the average electronegativity difference among the elements of an alloy, assuming both exert a synergetic effect. The best glass forming compositions for Zr-Cu and Ti-Ni systems are well predicted by this new approach. Although the new criterion needs further refinement, it is concluded that the proposed approach is a promising and simple tool to guide and reduce the tedious and labour intensive work to find good glass former compositions in metallic systems. A thermodynamic approach to predict bulk glass-forming compositions in binary metallic systems was recently proposed. In this approach. the parameter gamma* = Delta H-amor/(Delta H-inter - Delta H-amor) indicates the glass-forming ability (GFA) from the standpoint of the driving force to form different competing phases, and Delta H-amor and Delta H-inter are the enthalpies for-lass and intermetallic formation, respectively. Good glass-forming compositions should have a large negative enthalpy for glass formation and a very small difference for intermetallic formation, thus making the glassy phase easily reachable even under low cooling rates. The gamma* parameter showed a good correlation with GFA experimental data in the Ni-Nb binary system. In this work, a simple extension of the gamma* parameter is applied in the ternary Al-Ni-Y system. The calculated gamma* isocontours in the ternary diagram are compared with experimental results of glass formation in that system. Despite sonic misfitting, the best glass formers are found quite close to the highest gamma* values, leading to the conclusion that this thermodynamic approach can lie extended to ternary systems, serving as a useful tool for the development of new glass-forming compositions. Finally the thermodynamic approach is compared with the topological instability criteria used to predict the thermal behavior of glassy Al alloys. (C) 2007 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The glass-forming ability (GFA) of metallic alloys is associated with a topological instability criterion combined with a new parameter based on the average electronegativity difference of an element and its surrounding neighbours. In this model, we assume that during solidification the glassy phase competes directly with the supersaturated solid solution having the lowest topological instability factor for a given composition. This criterion is combined with the average electronegativity difference among the elements in the alloy, which reflects the strength of the liquid. The GFA is successfully correlated with this combined criterion in several binary glass-forming systems.

We study the spreading of contagious diseases in a population of constant size using susceptible-infective-recovered (SIR) models described in terms of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and probabilistic cellular automata (PCA). In the PCA model, each individual (represented by a cell in the lattice) is mainly locally connected to others. We investigate how the topological properties of the random network representing contacts among individuals influence the transient behavior and the permanent regime of the epidemiological system described by ODE and PCA. Our main conclusions are: (1) the basic reproduction number (commonly called R(0)) related to a disease propagation in a population cannot be uniquely determined from some features of transient behavior of the infective group; (2) R(0) cannot be associated to a unique combination of clustering coefficient and average shortest path length characterizing the contact network. We discuss how these results can embarrass the specification of control strategies for combating disease propagations. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim of the present study was to provide a numerical measure, through the process capability indexes (PCIs), C(p) and C(pk), on whether or not the manufacturing process can be considered capable of producing metamizol (500 mg) tablets. They were also used as statistical tool in order to prove the consistency of the tabletting process, making sure that the tablet weight and the content uniformity of metamizol are able to comply with the preset requirements. Besides that, the ANOVA, the t-test and the test for equal variances were applied to this study, allowing additional knowledge of the tabletting phase. Therefore, the proposed statistical approach intended to assure more safety, precision and accuracy on the process validation analysis.

MinE is an oligomeric protein that, in conjunction with other Min proteins, is required for the proper placement of the cell division site of Escherichia coli. We have examined the self-association properties of MinE by analytical ultracentrifugation and by studies of hetero-oligomer formation in non-denaturing polyacrylamide gets. The self-association properties of purified MinE predict that cytoplasmic MinE is likely to exist as a mixture of monomers and dimers. Consistent with this prediction, the C-terminal MinE(22-88) fragment forms hetero-oligomers with MinE(+) when the proteins are co-expressed. In contrast, the MinE(36-88) fragment does not form MinE(+)/MinE(36-88) hetero-oligomers, although MinE36-88 affects the topological specificity of septum placement as shown by its ability to induce minicell formation when co-expressed with MinE(+) in wild-type cells. Therefore, hetero-oligomer formation is not necessary for the induction of mini-celling by expression of MinE(36-88) in wild-type cells. The interference with normal septal placement is ascribed to competition between MinE(36-88),nd the corresponding domain in the complete MinE protein for a component required for the topological specificity of septal placement.

Correct placement of the division septum in Escherichia coli requires the co-ordinated action of three proteins, MinC, MinD and MinE. MinC and MinD interact to form a non-specific division inhibitor that blocks septation at all potential division sites. MinE is able to antagonize MinCD in a topologically sensitive manner, as it restricts MinCD activity to the unwanted division sites at the cell poles, Here, we show that the topological specificity function of MinE residues in a structurally autonomous, trypsin-resistant domain comprising residues 31-88, Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and circular dichroic spectroscopy indicate that this domain includes both alpha and beta secondary structure, while analytical ultracentrifugation reveals that it also contains a region responsible for MinE homodimerization. While trypsin digestion indicates that the anti-MinCD domain of MinE (residues 1-22) does not form a tightly folded structural domain, NMR analysis of a peptide corresponding to MinE(1-22) indicates that this region forms a nascent helix in which the peptide rapidly interconverts between disordered (random coil) and alpha-helical conformations, This suggests that the N-terminal region of MinE may be poised to adopt an alpha-helical conformation when it interacts with the target of its anti-MinCD activity, presumably MinD.

The traditional theory of price index numbers is based on the law of one price. But in the real world, we frequently observe the existence of an equilibrium price dispersion instead of one price of equilibrium. This article discusses the effects of price dispersion on two price indexes: the cost of living index and the consumer price index. With price dispersion and consumer searching for the lowest price, these indexes cannot be interpreted as deterministic indicators, but as stochastic indicators, and they can be biased if price dispersion is not taken into account. A measure for the bias of the consumer price index is proposed and the article ends with an estimation of the bias based on data obtained from the consumer price index calculated for the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, from January 1988 through December 2004. The period analysed is very interesting, because it exhibits different inflationary environments: high levels and high volatility of the rates of inflation with great price dispersion until July 1994 and low and relatively stable rates of inflation with prices less dispersed after August 1994.
