This paper discusses the effects of thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC), a series FACTS controller, on the transient stability of a power system. Trajectory sensitivity analysis (TSA) has been used to measure the transient stability condition of the system. The TCSC is modeled by a variable capacitor, the value of which changes with the firing angle. It is shown that TSA can be used in the design of the controller. The optimal locations of the TCSC-controller for different fault conditions can also be identified with the help of TSA. The paper depicts the advantage of the use of TCSC with a suitable controller over fixed capacitor operation.

This paper illustrates robust fixed order power oscillation damper design for mitigating power systems oscillations. From implementation and tuning point of view, such low and fixed structure is common practice for most practical applications, including power systems. However, conventional techniques of optimal and robust control theory cannot handle the constraint of fixed-order as it is, in general, impossible to ensure a target closed-loop transfer function by a controller of any given order. This paper deals with the problem of synthesizing or designing a feedback controller of dynamic order for a linear time-invariant plant for a fixed plant, as well as for an uncertain family of plants containing parameter uncertainty, so that stability, robust stability and robust performance are attained. The desired closed-loop specifications considered here are given in terms of a target performance vector representing a desired closed-loop design. The performance of the designed controller is validated through non-linear simulations for a range of contingencies.

This paper describes an application of a FACTS supplementary controller for damping of inter area oscillations in power systems. A fuzzy logic controller is designed to regulate a thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) in a multimachine environment to produce additional damping in the system. Simultaneous application of the excitation controller and proposed controller is also investigated. Simulation studies have been done with different types of disturbances and the results are shown to be consistent with the expected performance of the supplementary controller.

The problem of power system stability including the effects of a flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) is approached. First, the controlled series compensation is considered in the machine against infinite bar system and its effects are taken into account by means of construction of a Lyapunov function (LF). This simple system is helpful in order to understand the form the device affects dynamic and transient performance of the power system. After, the multimachine case is considered and it is shown that the single-machine results apply to multimachine systems. An energy-form Lyapunov function is derived for the power system including the FACTS device and it is used to analyse damping and synchronizing effects due to the FACTS device in single-machine as well as in multimachine power systems. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The main objective of this work is to analyze the ability of FACTS devices like TCSC and UPFC to damp low frequency oscillations and a POD controller is also included. A comparative study of damping effect of those devices IS carried out. The Power Sensitivity Model (PSM) is used to the representation of the electric power system. Sensibility analysis using the residue method shows the best place for the installation of FACTS and the procedure to determine POD parameters. ©2008 IEEE.
