A key feature in future aircraft operations will be automation of various aircraft processes, such as air traffic separation management and the management of forced landing events. Automated versions of these processes will often involve consideration of multiple modes of operations and hence require consideration of automated decision processes able to switch between various available modes of operations. This paper proposes a switching algorithm on the basis of max-min decision theory. This algorithm is particularly suitable in situations where each operational mode has access to different set of partial information. We apply our proposed algorithm to the air traffic separation management problem. A simulation study is presented that illustrates the performance of the proposed switching algorithm.

A switching control strategy is proposed for current-fed half-bridge converters. An active switch based voltage doubler circuit at the secondary side of the isolation transformer is used to obtain zero-current-switching at turn-off and zero-voltage-switching at turn-on in the primary side switches of the current-fed half-bridge converter. The operation of the current-fed half-bridge converter with the proposed switching control strategy is explained using the equivalent circuit during each sub-interval of operation. The operation of the current-fed halfbridge converter is simulated using MATLAB/Simpower and PSIM to verify the feasibility of the switching control strategy. Experimental results are provided to validate the converter's operation.

A switching control strategy is proposed for single and dual inductor current-fed push-pull converters. The proposed switching control strategy can be used with both current-fed push-pull converters with an active voltage doubler rectifier, or active rectifier, in the secondary side of the isolation transformer. The proposed switching control strategy makes turn-on and turn-off processes of the primary side power switches zero-voltage-switching and zero-current-switching respectively. The soft-switching operation of the single and dual inductor push-pull converters, with both types of active rectifier, is explained. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate soft switching operation of the current-fed push-pull converters with the proposed switching control strategy.

This paper discusses the application of hybrid model predictive control to control switching between different burner modes in a novel compact marine boiler design. A further purpose of the present work is to point out problems with finite horizon model predictive control applied to systems for which the optimal solution is a limit cycle. Regarding the marine boiler control the aim is to find an optimal control strategy which minimizes a trade-off between deviations in boiler pressure and water level from their respective setpoints while limiting burner switches.The approach taken is based on the Mixed Logic Dynamical framework. The whole boiler systems is modelled in this framework and a model predictive controller is designed. However to facilitate on-line implementation only a small part of the search tree in the mixed integer optimization is evaluated to find out whether a switch should occur or not. The strategy is verified on a simulation model of the compact marine boiler for control of low/high burner load switches. It is shown that even though performance is adequate for some disturbance levels it becomes deteriorated when the optimal solution is a limit cycle. We investigated the mechanisms responsible for increased blood pressure and sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) caused by 2-3 days dehydration (DH) both in vivo and in situ preparations. In euhydrated (EH) rats, systemic application of the AT(1) receptor antagonist Losartan and subsequent pre-collicular transection (to remove the hypothalamus) significantly reduced thoracic (t) SNA. In contrast, in DH rats, Losartan, followed by pre-collicular and pontine transections, failed to reduce tSNA, whereas transection at the medulla-spinal cord junction massively reduced tSNA. In DH but not EH rats, selective inhibition of the commissural nucleus tractus solitarii (cNTS) significantly reduced tSNA. Comparable data were obtained in both in situ and in vivo (anaesthetized/conscious) rats and suggest that following chronic dehydration, the control of tSNA transfers from supra-brainstem structures (e. g. hypothalamus) to the medulla oblongata, particularly the cNTS. As microarray analysis revealed up-regulation of AP1 transcription factor JunD in the dehydrated cNTS, we tested the hypothesis that AP1 transcription factor activity is responsible for dehydration-induced functional plasticity. When AP1 activity was blocked in the cNTS using a viral vector expressing a dominant negative FosB, cNTS inactivation was ineffective. However, tSNA was decreased after pre-collicular transection, a response similar to that seen in EHrats. Thus, the dehydration-induced switch in control of tSNA from hypothalamus to cNTS seems to be mediated via activation of AP1 transcription factors in the cNTS. If AP1 activity is blocked in the cNTS during dehydration, sympathetic activity control reverts back to forebrain regions. This unique reciprocating neural structure-switching plasticity between brain centres emphasizes the multiple mechanisms available for the adaptive response to dehydration.

In this paper we introduce the Reaction Wheel Pendulum, a novel mechanical system consisting of a physical pendulum with a rotating bob. This system has several attractive features both from a pedagogical standpoint and from a research standpoint. From a pedagogical standpoint, the dynamics are the simplest among the various pendulum experiments available so that the system can be introduced to students earlier in their education. At the same time, the system is nonlinear and underactuated so that it can be used as a benchmark experiment to study recent advanced methodologies in nonlinear control, such as feedback linearization, passivity methods, backstepping and hybrid control. In this paper we discuss two control approaches for the problems of swingup and balance, namely, feedback linearization and passivity based control. We first show that the system is locally feedback linearizable by a local diffeomorphism in state space and nonlinear feedback. We compare the feedback linearization control with a linear pole-placement control for the problem of balancing the pendulum about the inverted position. For the swingup problem we discuss an energy approach based on collocated partial feedback linearization, and passivity of the resulting zero dynamics. A hybrid/switching control strategy is used to switch between the swingup and the balance control. Experimental results are presented.

With the rapid development of world-wide wind energy generation using doubly fed induction generations (DFIGs), low voltage ride through (LVRT) has become a great concern. This paper focuses on a unique topology of DFIG called IG connection mode to help the DFIG ride through grid faults smoothly. Transient analysis of IG connection mode is carried out to derive the generator currents. With this analysis, the control strategy for IG connection mode DFIG was developed. From the simulation results, it is clearly visible that IG mode could work in both normal and low grid voltage conditions. Simulation results clearly show that the DFIG with the proposed mode switching control could smoothly ride through low voltage grid faults while satisfying grid code requirements.

A switching control strategy is proposed for single inductor current-fed push-pull converter with a secondary side active voltage doubler rectifier or a voltage rectifier used in photovoltaic (PV) grid interfacing. The proposed switching control strategy helps to turn-on and turn-off the primary side power switches with zero-voltage and zero-current switching. The operation of the push-pull converter is analyzed for two modes of operation. The feasibility of the proposed switching control strategy is validated using simulation and experimental results.

In this work a switching feedback controller for stick-slip compensation of a 2-DOF mass-spring-belt system which interacts with an energy source of limited power supply (non-ideal case) is developed. The system presents an oscillatory behavior due to the stick-slip friction. As the system equilibrium for a conventional feedback controller is not the origin, a switching control law combining a state feedback term and a discontinuous term is proposed to regulate the position of the mass. The problem of tracking a desired periodic trajectory is also considered. The feedback system is robust with respect to the friction force that is assumed to be within known upper and lower bounds.

Various load compensation schemes proposed in literature assume that voltage source at point of common coupling (PCC) is stiff. In practice, however, the load is remote from a distribution substation and is supplied by a feeder. In the presence of feeder impedance, the PWM inverter switchings distort both the PCC voltage and the source currents. In this paper load compensation with such a non-stiff source is considered. A switching control of the voltage source inverter (VSI) based on state feedback is used for load compensation with non-stiff source. The design of the state feedback controller requires careful considerations in choosing a gain matrix and in the generation of reference quantities. These aspects are considered in this paper. Detailed simulation and experimental results are given to support the control design.

This paper presents a feasible 3D collision avoidance approach for fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The proposed strategy aims to achieve the desired relative bearing in the horizontal plane and relative elevation in the vertical plane so that the host aircraft is able to avoid collision with the intruder aircraft in 3D. The host aircraft will follow a desired trajectory in the collision avoidance course and resume the pre-arranged trajectory after collision is avoided. The approaching stopping condition is determined for the host aircraft to trigger an evasion maneuver to avoid collision in terms of measured heading. A switching controller is designed to achieve the spatial collision avoidance strategy. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively avoid spatial collision, making it suitable for integration into flight control systems of UAVs.
