This paper proposes a response surface methodology to evaluate the influence of the particle size and temperature as variables and their interaction on the sulfation process using two Brazilian limestones, a calcite (ICB) and a dolomite (DP). Experiments were performed according to an experimental design [central composite rotatable design (CCRD)] carried out on a thermogravimetric balance and a nitrogen adsorption porosimeter. In the SO 2 sorption process, DP was shown to be more efficient than ICB. The best results for both limestones in relation to conversion and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area were obtained under central point conditions (545 μm and 850 C for DP and 274 μm and 815 C for ICB). The optimal values for conversion were 52% for DP and 37% for ICB. For BET surface area, the optimal values were 35 m2 g-1 for DP and 45 m2 g-1 for ICB. A relationship between conversion and pore size distribution has been established. The experiments that showed higher conversions also exhibited more pores in the region between 20 and 150 Å and larger BET surface area, indicating that the amount of smaller pores may be an important factor in the reactivity of limestones. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The influence of the temperature and reaction time on the sulfation process of a dolomite is investigated in this paper. The sulfation effectiveness was evaluated and correlated with changes in the physical characteristics of a Brazilian dolomite during the reactive process. Calcination and sulfation experiments were performed under isothermal conditions for dolomite samples with average particle sizes of 545 mu m at temperatures of 750 degrees C, 850 degrees C and 950 degrees C at different times of sulfation. Thermogravimetric tests were applied to establish the reactivity variation of the dolomite in function of the time in the sulfation reaction and evaluate the methodology of the samples preparation. Porosimetry tests were performed to study the pore blockage of dolomite during the sulfation reaction. The highest values of BET surface area were 25.55 m(2)/g, 29.55 m(2)/g and 12.62 m(2)/g for calcined samples and after their sulfation processes, conversions of 51.5%, 61.9% and 42.8% were obtained at 750 degrees C, 850 degrees C and 950 degrees C, respectively. Considering the process as a whole, the best fit was provided by a first-order exponential decay equation. Moreover, the results have shown that it is possible to quantify the decreasing in the dolomite reactivity for sulfur dioxide sorption and understand the changes in the behavior of the sulfation process of limestones when applied to technologies, as fluidized bed combustor, in which sulfur dioxide is present. In this work, the structural and surface properties of Co-loaded sulfated zirconia (SZ) catalysts were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, NH3-TPD, FT-IR spectroscopy, H-2-TPR, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and NO-TPD. NH3-TPD and FT-IR spectra results of the catalysts showed that the sulfation process of the support resulted in the generation of strong Bronsted and Lewis acid sites, which is essential for the SCR of NO with methane. On the other hand, the N-2 adsorption, H-2-TPR, UV/vis DRS, and XPS of the catalysts demonstrated that the presence of the SO42- species promoted the dispersion of the Co species and prevented the formation Of Co3O4. Such an increased dispersion of Co species suppressed the combustion reaction of CH4 by O-2 and increased the selectivity toward NO reduction. The NO-TPD proved that the loading of Co increased the adsorption of NO over SZ catalysts, which is another reason for the promoting effect of Co. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The experiments reported here were designed to characterize the intrinsic vitreous glycoproteins and to understand the process of their sulfation. Rabbits were injected intravitreally with S-35-sodium sulfate and killed at several time intervals after injection. In another series of experiments, rabbits were injected either with S-35-sodium sulfate, H-3-fucose or H-3-tyrosine, associated or not associated with tunicamycin administration. Vitreous from the control eyes was also digested with N-glycosidase.. Furthermore, ciliary bodies, the putative source of the intrinsic vitreous glycoproteins, were incubated with S-35-sodium sulfate in the presence or absence of the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide, and the culture media recovered for analysis. These and the vitreous samples of the other experiments were processed for sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and fluorography. Except for serum albumin, practically all polypeptide bands of the vitreous and culture media were labeled with radioactive sulfate and were shown to undergo renewal. The experiments using tunicamycin or enzyme treatment suggest that radioactive sulfate was incorporated not only into the carbohydrate side chains of the glycoproteins but also into the amino acid tyrosine of the polypeptide backbone of these glycoproteins.
