An optical communication scheme of 2-D pattern transfer based on imaging optics for submarine laser uplink communication (SLUC) is suggested. Unlike the methods aiming at avoiding neighboring crosstalk used in traditional multi-channel optical beam transferring, we make full use of the overlapping of each spreading beam other than controlling divergence effect of each beam to avoid interference noise. The apparent parameters have been introduced to simplify theoretical analysis of optical pattern transfer problem involving underwater condition, with the help of which the complex beam propagation inside two kinds of mediums can be easily reduced to brief beam transfer only inside air medium. In this paper, optical transmission path and receiver terminal optics geometry have been described in detail. The link range equation and system uplink performance analysis have also been given. At last, results of a proof-of-concept experiment indicate good feasibility of the proposed SLUC model. © 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

A 1.55 mu m InGaAsP-InP partly gain-coupled two-section DFB self-pulsation laser (SPL) with a varied ridge width has been fabricated. The laser produces self-pulsations with a frequency tuning range of more than 135 GHz. All-optical clock recovery from 40 Gb/s degraded data streams has been demonstrated. Successful lockings of the device at frequencies of 30 GHz, 40 GHz, 50 GHz, and 60 GHz to a 10 GHz sidemode injection are also conducted, which demonstrates the capability of the device for all-optical clock recovery at different frequencies. This flexibility of the device is highly desired for practical uses. Crown Copyright
Optical source model for the 23.2-23.6 nm radiation from the multielement germanium soft X-ray laser
Resumo:
Distributions of source intensity in two dimensions (designated the source model), averaged over a single laser pulse, based on experimental measurements of spatial coherence, are considered for radiation from the unresolved 23.2/23.6 nm spectral lines from the germanium collisional X-ray laser. The model derives from measurements of the visibility of Young slit interference fringes determined by a method based on the Wiener-Khinchin theorem. Output from amplifiers comprising three and four target elements have similar coherence properties in directions within the horizontal plane corresponding to strong plasma refraction effects and fitting the coherence data shows source dimensions (FWHM) are similar to 26 mu m (horizontal), significantly smaller than expected by direct imaging, and similar to 125 mu m (vertical: equivalent to the height of the driver excitation). We report a study of the effect of prepulses on XUV lasing of Ne-like germanium for an irradiation geometry where approximate to 20 mm long germanium slab targets were irradiated at approximate to 1.6 x 10(13) W cm(-2) using approximate to 0.7 ns (1.06 mu m) pulses from the VULCAN glass laser. Prepulses were generated at fractional power levels of approximate to 2 x 10(-4) (low) and approximate to 2 x 10(-2) (high) and arrived on target 5 and 3.2 ns respectively in advance of the main heating pulse, For both the low and high prepulses the output of the 3p-3s, J = 0-1, line at 19.6 nm was enhanced such that the peak radiant density (J/st) for this line became greater than that for the normally stronger J = 2-1 lines at 23.2 and 23.6 nm. The J = 0-1 line, whose FWHM duration was reduced from approximate to 450 ps to approximate to 100 ps, delivered approximate to 6 x more power (W) than the average for the combined J = 2-1 lines, whose FWHM duration was approximate to 500 ps for both levels of prepulse, The higher prepulse was more effective, yielding approximate to 2 x more radiant density and approximate to 7 x more power on both the J = 0-1 and J = 2-1 transitions compared to the low prepulse case, The most dramatic observation overall was the approximate to 40 x increase of power in the J = 0-1 line for the high prepulse (approximate to 2%) case compared with the zero prepulse case. These observations, coupled with measurements of beam divergence and beam deviation through refractive bending, as well as general agreement with modelling, lead us to conclude that, for germanium, the main influence of the prepulse is (a) to increase the energy absorbed from the main pulse, (b) to increase the volume of the gain zone and (c) to relax the plasma density gradients, particularly in the J = 0-1 gain zone.

We describe a technique applicable to interferometric systems illuminated by a laser diode, whereby the optical path difference is recovered by means of sinusoidal modulation of the laser emission frequency.

Single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) has appeared to be a promising technique for high data rate uplink communications. Aimed at SC-FDMA applications, a cyclic prefixed version of the offset quadrature amplitude modulation based OFDM (OQAM-OFDM) is first proposed in this paper. We show that cyclic prefixed OQAMOFDM CP-OQAM-OFDM) can be realized within the framework of the standard OFDM system, and perfect recovery condition in the ideal channel is derived. We then apply CP-OQAMOFDM to SC-FDMA transmission in frequency selective fading channels. Signal model and joint widely linear minimum mean square error (WLMMSE) equalization using a prior information with low complexity are developed. Compared with the existing DFTS-OFDM based SC-FDMA, the proposed SC-FDMA can significantly reduce envelope fluctuation (EF) of the transmitted signal while maintaining the bandwidth efficiency. The inherent structure of CP-OQAM-OFDM enables low-complexity joint equalization in the frequency domain to combat both the multiple access interference and the intersymbol interference. The joint WLMMSE equalization using a prior information guarantees optimal MMSE performance and supports Turbo receiver for improved bit error rate (BER) performance. Simulation resultsconfirm the effectiveness of the proposed SC-FDMA in termsof EF (including peak-to-average power ratio, instantaneous-toaverage power ratio and cubic metric) and BER performances.

The gain of a transmitter for intersatellite communications is closely related to the performance of all the links. We calculate the transmitter telescope's gain with the help of the rigorous scalar diffraction theory and equivalent optical layout method. Furthermore, a comparison is performed with the conventional imaging method. The results show that the stop inside the telescope can affect the gain of the telescope. Finally, the gain is calculated under the condition of the aberrations. We find that different aberrations cause different effects. (C) 2006 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

High-power (more than 500 mW) and high-speed (more than 1 Gbps) tapered lasers at 1060 nm are required in free-space optical communications and (at lower frequencies of around 100 MHz) display applications for frequency doubling to the green. On a 3 mm long tapered laser, we have obtained an open eye diagram at 1 Gbps, together with a high extinction ratio of 11 dB, an optical modulation amplitude of 530 mW, and a high modulation efficiency of 13 W/A. On a 4 mm-long tapered laser, we have obtained an open eye diagram at 700 Mbps, together with a high extinction ratio of 19 dB, a high optical modulation amplitude of 1.6 W, and a very high modulation efficiency of 19 W/A. On a 6 mm-long tapered laser, we have obtained a very high power of 5W CW and a very high static modulation efficiency of 59.8 W/A. © 2011 SPIE.
