Stress corrosion cracking susceptibility was investigated for an ultra-fine grained (UFG) AI-7.5Mg alloy and a conventional 5083 H111 alloy in natural seawater using slow strain rate testing (SSRT) at very slow strain rates between 1E(-5) s(-1), 1E(-6) s(-1) and 1E(-7) s(-1). The UFG Al-7.5Mg alloy was produced by cryomilling, while the 5083 H111 alloy is considered as a wrought manufactured product. The response of tensile properties to strain rate was analyzed and compared. Negative strain rate sensitivity was observed for both materials in terms of the elongation to failure. However, the UFG alloy displayed strain rate sensitivity in relation to strength while the conventional alloy was relatively strain rate insensitive. The mechanical behavior of the conventional 5083 alloy was attributed to dynamic strain aging (DSA) and delayed pit propagation while the performance of the UFG alloy was related to a diffusion-mediated stress relaxation mechanism that successfully delayed crack initiation events, counteracted by exfoliation and pitting which enhanced crack initiation. This paper reports a packaging and calibration procedure for surface mounting of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors to measure strain in rocks. The packaging of FBG sensors is performed with glass fiber and polyester resin, and then subjected to tensile loads in order to obtain strength and deformability parameters, necessaries to assess the mechanical performance of the sensor packaging. For a specific package, an optimal curing condition has been found, showing good repeatability and adaptability for non-planar surfaces, such as occurs in rock engineering. The successfully packaged sensors and electrical strain gages were attached to standard rock specimens of gabbro. Longitudinal and transversal strains under compression loads were measured with both techniques, showing that response of FBG sensors is linear and reliable. An analytical model is used to characterize the influences of rock substrate and FBG packaging in strain transmission. As a result, we obtained a sensor packaging for non-planar and complex natural material under acceptable sensitivity suitable for very small strains as occurs in hard rocks.

ABSTRACT Optical fiber sensors are a technology that has matured in recent years, however, further development for rock applications is needed. Rocks contain mineral particles and features larger than electrical strain gauges traditionally used in laboratory tests, causing the results to be unrepresentative. In this work were designed, manufactured, and tested large area and curved shape strain gages, using fiber Bragg gratings in optical fiber (FBG) in order to obtain representative measurement on surface rocks samples containing minerals and structures of different compositions, sizes and directions. This reports presents the processes of manufacturing, mechanical characterization, calibration and evaluation under uniaxial compression tests on rock samples. To verify the efficiency of rock deformation transmitted to attached sensor, it was also performed the analysis of the strain transfer including the effects of the bonding, the sample and the transducer. The experimental results indicate that the developed sensor enables reliable measurements of the strain and its transmission from rock to sensor, appropriate for use in heterogeneous materials, pointing an interesting perspective for applications on irregular surfaces, allowing increasing at will the size and shape of the measurement area. This research suggests suitability of the optical strain gauge for real scale, where traditional electrical systems have demonstrated some limitations.

CFRP material has been widely used to strengthen concrete structures. There is an increasing trend of using CFRP in strengthening steel structures. The bond between steel and CFRP is a key issue. Relatively less work has been done on the bond between CFRP and a curved surface which is often found in tubular structures. This paper reports a study on the bond between CFRP and steel tubes. A series of tensile tests were conducted with different bond lengths and number of layers. The types of adhesive and specimen preparation methods varied in the testing program. High modulus CFRP was used. Tests were carried out to measure the modulus and tensile strength of CFRP. Strain gages were mounted on different layers of CFRP. The stress distributions across the layers of the CFRP were established. Models were developed to estimate the maximum load for a given CFRP arrangement.

In this work are presented the values found with the experimental testing, in the semi-elliptic leaf spring, utilizing 24 strain gages, distributed in five leaves of springs; these values have been compared to the calculated values found with the application of Norm SAE J788 (1982). The results showed discrepancy between the values measured and calculated and that the Norm is not indicated to determine the actuating stress in any point of any leaf of the leaf spring, but due to its simplicity and quickness of the process it presents good precision for the pre-development of the product. The instrumentation applied to the Charpy test machine allows the accompaniment of the specimen answer front the impact load, in form of a sign characteristically dynamic representative of the deformation process and it fractures of material tested. The main advantages of the rehearsal conventional Charpy: low cost, manufacturing sample facilities and simple handle the machine. With the instrumentation, the number of information regarding the process of fracture of the specimen increases. In this work discusses the influence of the hammer geometry in determination of the force during the process of specimen fracture submitted to the instrumented impact test Charpy-V. The purpose is obtaining a hammer, in conformity with Norma ISO 14.556, with great sensibility to register the force during the impact. Two geometries different from hammers were instrumented and rehearsed with material of low tenacity, in this case the steel ABNT 4140 in the condition of having normalized. It could be proven as larger the sensibility of the hammer, adult will be the effects of the shock waves in the strain gages of the transducer.

This paper describes a high senstivity low cost capacitive strain gage sensor. The theory, design, and sensor construction details are presented. It consists of eight capacitive sensors connected in two full bridges. The capacitive strain gage sensor structure was designed in order to produce high sensitivity and low dependence with temperature. By using a simple signal conditioning circuit constituted by a differential amplifier, a band-pass filter, and a precision rectifier the device can measure forces with resolution of 0.009 N and precision of 98.7%. It is rugged, presents linear response, and good repeatability. It presents sensitivity of 8.7 V/N and fall time of 12 ms.

A 1000-kgf resistive strain-gauge load cell has been developed for quality testing of rocket propellant grain. A 7075-T6 aluminum alloy has been used for the elastic column, in which 8 uniaxial, 120-Ω strain gauges have been bonded and connected to form a full Wheatstone bridge to detect the strain. The chosen geometry makes the transducer insensitive to moments and, also, to the temperature. Experimental tests using a universal testing machine to imposed compression force to the load cell have demonstrated that its behavior is linear, with sensitivity of 2.90 μV/kgf ± 0.34%, and negligible hysteresis. The designed force transducer response to a dynamic test has been comparable to that of a commercial load cell. © 2005 IEEE.

Objectives. To verify the hypothesis that crack analysis and a mechanical test would rank a series of composites in a similar order with respect to polymerization stress. Also, both tests would show similar relationships between stress and composite elastic modulus and/or shrinkage. Methods. Soda-lime glass discs (2-mm thick) with a central perforation (3.5-mm diameter) received four Vickers indentations 500 mu m from the cavity margin. The indent cracks were measured (500x) prior and 10 min after the cavity was restored with one of six materials (Kalore/KL, Gradia/GR, Ice/IC, Wave/WV, Majesty Flow/MF, and Majesty Posterior/MP). Stresses at the indent site were calculated based on glass fracture toughness and increase in crack length. Stress at the bonded interface was calculated using the equation for an internally pressurized cylinder. The mechanical test used a universal testing machine and glass rods (5-mm diameter) as substrate. An extensometer monitored specimen height (2 mm). Nominal stress was calculated dividing the maximum shrinkage force by the specimen cross-sectional area. Composite elastic modulus was determined by nanoindentation and post-gel shrinkage was measured using strain gages. Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA/Tukey or Kruskal-Wallis/Mann-Whitney tests (alpha: 5%). Results. Both tests grouped the composites in three statistical subsets, with small differences in overlapping between the intermediate subset (MF, WV) and the highest (MP, IC) or the lowest stress materials (KL, GR). Higher stresses were developed by composites with high modulus and/or high shrinkage. Significance. Crack analysis demonstrated to be as effective as the mechanical test to rank composites regarding polymerization stress. (c) 2012 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Strain rate significantly affects the strength of a material. The Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) was initially used to study the effects of high strain rate (~103 1/s) testing of metals. Later modifications to the original technique allowed for the study of brittle materials such as ceramics, concrete, and rock. While material properties of wood for static and creep strain rates are readily available, data on the dynamic properties of wood are sparse. Previous work using the SHPB technique with wood has been limited in scope to variability of only a few conditions and tests of the applicability of the SHPB theory on wood have not been performed. Tests were conducted using a large diameter (3.0 inch (75 mm)) SHPB. The strain rate and total strain applied to a specimen are dependent on the striker bar length and velocity at impact. Pulse shapers are used to further modify the strain rate and change the shape of the strain pulse. A series of tests were used to determine test conditions necessary to produce a strain rate, total strain, and pulse shape appropriate for testing wood specimens. Hard maple, consisting of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and black maple (Acer nigrum), and eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) specimens were used to represent a dense hardwood and a low-density soft wood. Specimens were machined to diameters of 2.5 and 3.0 inches and an assortment of lengths were tested to determine the appropriate specimen dimensions. Longitudinal specimens of 1.5 inch length and radial and tangential specimens of 0.5 inch length were found to be most applicable to SHPB testing. Stress/strain curves were generated from the SHPB data and validated with 6061-T6 aluminum and wood specimens. Stress was indirectly corroborated with gaged aluminum specimens. Specimen strain was assessed with strain gages, digital image analysis, and measurement of residual strain to confirm the strain calculated from SHPB data. The SHPB was found to be a useful tool in accurately assessing the material properties of wood under high strain rates (70 to 340 1/s) and short load durations (70 to 150 μs to compressive failure).

Freezing of water or salt solution in concrete pores is a main cause for severe damage and significant reduction of the service life. Most of the freeze-thaw (F-T) accelerated tests measure the scaling of concrete by weighting. This paper presents complementary procedures based on the use of strain gages and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) for measuring the deterioration of concrete due to freezing and thawing. These non-destructive testing (NDT) procedures are applied to two types of concretes, one susceptible to F-T damage and the other does not. The results show a good correlation between scaling and the measurements obtained with NDT. Showing NDT the advantage to detect before the damage and to perform continuous measurement

Both strain and damage sensing properties on carbon nanofiber cement composites (CNFCC) are reported in the present paper. Strain sensing tests were first made on the material’s elastic range. The applied loading levels have been previously calculated from mechanical strength tests. The effect of several variables on the strain-sensing function was studied, e.g. cement pastes curing age, current density, loading rate or maximum stress applied. All these parameters were discussed using the gage factor as reference. After this first set of elastic experiments, the same specimens were gradually loaded until material’s failure. At the same time both strain and resistivity were measured. The former was controlled using strain gages, and the latter using a multimeter on a four probe setup. The aim of these tests was to prove the sensitivity of these CNF composites to sense their own damage, i.e. check the possibility of fabricating structural damage sensors with CNFCC’s. All samples with different CNF dosages showed good strain-sensing capacities for curing periods of 28 days. Furthermore, a 2%CNF reinforced cement paste has been sensitive to its own structural damage.
