Grain marketing decisions are among the toughest the farm owner/operator or manager must make. Grain producers store grain to speculate on receiving higher prices, earn a return above storage costs, or to take advantage of government programs. Prices must increase enough to cover the additional costs, or forward contract prices must exceed current prices by more than the cost of storage in order to justify forward pricing. The gain in prices received can come from both changes in price level and changes in basis. This research publication discusses all the areas of the cost of grain storage.

Glutens, the storage proteins in wheat grains, are a major source of protein in human nutrition. The protein composition of wheat has therefore been an important focus of cereal research. Proteomic tools have been used to describe the genetic diversity of wheat germplasms from different origins at the level of polymorphisms in alleles encoding glutenin and gliadin, the two main proteins of gluten. More recently, proteomics has been used to understand the impact of specific gluten proteins on wheat quality. Here we review the impact of proteomics on the study of gluten proteins as it has evolved from fractionation and electrophoretic techniques to advanced mass spectrometry. In the postgenome era, proteomics is proving to be essential in the effort to identify and understand the interactions between different gluten proteins. This is helping to fill in gaps in our knowledge of how the technological quality of wheat is determined by the interaction between genotype and environment. We also collate information on the various storage protein alleles identified and their prevalence, which makes it possible to infer the effects of wheat selection on grain protein content. We conclude by reviewing the more recent use of transgenesis aimed at improving the quality of gluten.

Metal and semiconductor nanowires (NWs) have been widely employed as the building blocks of the nanoelectromechanical systems, which usually acted a resonant beam. Recent researches reported that nanowires are often polycrystalline, which contains grain boundaries (GBs) that transect the whole nanowire into a bamboo like structure. Based on the larger-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, a comprehensive investigation of the influence from grain boundaries on the vibrational properties of doubly clamped Ag NWs is conducted. It is found that, the presence of grain boundary will result in significant energy dissipation during the resonance of polycrystalline NWs, which leads a great deterioration to the quality factor. Further investigation reveals that the energy dissipation is originated from the plastic deformation of polycrystalline NWs in the form of the nucleation of partial dislocations or the generation of micro stacking faults around the GBs and the micro stacking faults is found to keep almost intact during the whole vibration process. Moreover, it is observed that the closer of the grain boundary getting to the regions with the highest strain state, the more energy dissipation will be resulted from the plastic deformation. In addition, either the increase of the number of grain boundaries or the decrease of the distance between the grain boundary and the highest strain state region is observed to induce a lower first resonance frequency. This work sheds lights on the better understanding of the mechanical properties of polycrystalline NWs, which benefits the increasing utilities of NWs in diverse nano-electronic devices.

A number of studies on Brigalow Research Station, Theodore, in Central Queensland, investigated the performance of different classes of cattle, with or without grain diets, on sown tropical pastures based on buffel and rhodes grasses. These studies were conducted for the Meat Research Corporation's DAQ 065 research project and monitored the growth, carcass attributes, meat quality and market suitability of weaner heifers and steers, 2% year-old steers and aged cull cows. The majority of grain feeding was on an ad lib basis during the winter-spring period when cattle growth rates on pastures are traditionally at or just above maintenance level. 21st Biennial Conference. 8-12 July 1996, University of Queensland. The effect of moisture content and storage temperature on the high quality storage life on macadamia nut-in-shell (NIS), and the subsequent influence of NIS storage on the shelf-life of roasted kernel, is being investigated. Macadamia integrifolia 'Keauhou" (HAES 246) NIS is being stored at 5°, 25°C and 40°C with a moisture content of 15.0, 12.5, 10.0, 7.5 and 3.5% for a maximum of 12 months. Preliminary results showed that unacceptable levels of visual mould developed on NIS with 15.0 and 12.5% moisture at 25°C following relatively short periods of storage. Discolouration and the production of an off-flavour in the raw kernel resulted after 1 month's storage of NIS with a moisture content of 10.0% at 40°C. Roasting times were reduced with increased storage duration of NIS with a moisture content of 15.0, 12.5 and 10.0% at 25°C, 15.0 and 12.5% at 5°C and 3.5% at 40°C. The percentage of roasted kernel rejects increased with increased storage duration of NIS with a moisture content of 15.0 and 12.5% at 25°C.

Two species of root-lesion nematode (predominantly Pratylenchus thornei but also P. neglectus) are widespread pathogens of wheat and other crops in Australia's northern grain belt, a subtropical region with deep, fertile clay soils and a summer-dominant rainfall pattern. Losses in grain yield from P. thornei can be as high as 70% for intolerant wheat cultivars. This review focuses on research which has led to the development of effective integrated management programs for these nematodes. It highlights the importance of correct identification in managing Pratylenchus species, reviews the plant breeding work done in developing tolerant and resistant cultivars, outlines the methods used to screen for tolerance and resistance, and discusses how planned crop sequencing with tolerant and partially resistant wheat cultivars, together with crops such as sorghum, sunflower, millets and canaryseed, can be used to reduce nematode populations and limit crop damage. The declining levels of soil organic matter in cropped soils are also discussed with reference to their effect on soil health and biological suppression of root-lesion nematodes.

Clonal forestry is the approach used for deployment of Pinus elliottii x P. caribaea hybrids in Queensland, Australia. Clonal forestry relies on the ability to maintain juvenility of stock plants while selections are made in field tests, so that genetic gains are not eroded by the effects of stock plant maturation. Two parallel approaches are employed in Queensland to maintain juvenility of clonal material. Firstly, the ortet and several ramets of each clone are maintained as archive hedges <20-cm height for the duration of field tests. Secondly, shoots from archive hedges are stored in tissue culture at low temperature and low irradiance to slow growth and slow maturation. Once the best clones have been identified, production hedges are derived from both archive hedges and tissue culture shoots. About 6 million rooted cuttings are produced annually, representing almost the entire planting program of Pinus in subtropical Queensland.

BACKGROUND: Twenty-two diverse sorghum landraces, classified as normal and opaque types obtained from Ethiopia, were characterised for grain quality parameters using near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS), chemical and Rapid Visco-Analyzer (RVA) characteristics. RESULTS: Protein content ranged from 77 to 182 g kg-1, and starch content from 514 to 745 g kg(-1). The NIRS analysis indicated the pig faecal digestible energy range from 14.6 to 15.7MJ kg(-1) as fed, and the ileal digestible energy range from 11.3 to 13.9MJ kg(-1) as fed. The normal sorghums had higher digestible energy than the opaque sorghums, which exhibited lower RVA viscosities, and higher pasting temperatures and setback ratios. The RVA parameterswere positively correlated with the starch content and negatively correlated with the protein content. The normal and opaque types formed two distinct groups based on principal component and cluster analyses. CONCLUSION: The landraces were different for the various grain quality parameters with some landraces displaying unique RVA and NIRS profiles. This study will guide utilisation of the sorghum landraces in plant improvement programs, and provides a basis for further studies into how starch and other constituents behave in and affect the properties of these landraces.
