We analyze the stability properties of equilibrium solutions and periodicity of orbits in a two-dimensional dynamical system whose orbits mimic the evolution of the price of an asset and the excess demand for that asset. The construction of the system is grounded upon a heterogeneous interacting agent model for a single risky asset market. An advantage of this construction procedure is that the resulting dynamical system becomes a macroscopic market model which mirrors the market quantities and qualities that would typically be taken into account solely at the microscopic level of modeling. The system`s parameters correspond to: (a) the proportion of speculators in a market; (b) the traders` speculative trend; (c) the degree of heterogeneity of idiosyncratic evaluations of the market agents with respect to the asset`s fundamental value; and (d) the strength of the feedback of the population excess demand on the asset price update increment. This correspondence allows us to employ our results in order to infer plausible causes for the emergence of price and demand fluctuations in a real asset market. The employment of dynamical systems for studying evolution of stochastic models of socio-economic phenomena is quite usual in the area of heterogeneous interacting agent models. However, in the vast majority of the cases present in the literature, these dynamical systems are one-dimensional. Our work is among the few in the area that construct and study analytically a two-dimensional dynamical system and apply it for explanation of socio-economic phenomena.

We investigate the interface dynamics of the two-dimensional stochastic Ising model in an external field under helicoidal boundary conditions. At sufficiently low temperatures and fields, the dynamics of the interface is described by an exactly solvable high-spin asymmetric quantum Hamiltonian that is the infinitesimal generator of the zero range process. Generally, the critical dynamics of the interface fluctuations is in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class of critical behavior. We remark that a whole family of RSOS interface models similar to the Ising interface model investigated here can be described by exactly solvable restricted high-spin quantum XXZ-type Hamiltonians. For repairable items, the manufacturer has the option to either repair or replace a failed item that is returned under warranty. In this paper, we look at a new warranty servicing strategy for items sold with two-dimensional warranty where the failed item is replaced by a new one when it fails for the first time in a specified region of the warranty and all other failures are repaired minimally. The region is characterised by two parameters and we derive the optimal values for these to minimise the total expected warranty servicing cost. We compare the results with other repair-replace strategies reported in the literature. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we establish, from extensive numerical experiments, that the two dimensional stochastic fire-diffuse-fire model belongs to the directed percolation universality class. This model is an idealized model of intracellular calcium release that retains the both the discrete nature of calcium stores and the stochastic nature of release. It is formed from an array of noisy threshold elements that are coupled only by a diffusing signal. The model supports spontaneous release events that can merge to form spreading circular and spiral waves of activity. The critical level of noise required for the system to exhibit a non-equilibrium phase-transition between propagating and non-propagating waves is obtained by an examination of the \textit{local slope} $\delta(t)$ of the survival probability, $\Pi(t) \propto \exp(- \delta(t))$, for a wave to propagate for a time $t$.

Chen and Popova [Res. Engng Syst. Saf. 77 (2002) 61] discuss maintenance policies for items sold with a two-dimensional warranty. However, their paper fails to give a proper review of the literature and it also contains errors. In this note we first review the relevant literature and then comment on the errors in their analysis. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

For repairable items sold with free replacement warranty, the actions available to the manufacturer to rectify failures under warranty are to (1) repair the failed item or (2) replace it with a new one. A proper repair-replace strategy can reduce the expected cost of servicing the warranty. In this paper, we study repair-replace strategies for items sold with a two-dimensional free replacement warranty. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We investigate several two-dimensional guillotine cutting stock problems and their variants in which orthogonal rotations are allowed. We first present two dynamic programming based algorithms for the Rectangular Knapsack (RK) problem and its variants in which the patterns must be staged. The first algorithm solves the recurrence formula proposed by Beasley; the second algorithm - for staged patterns - also uses a recurrence formula. We show that if the items are not so small compared to the dimensions of the bin, then these algorithms require polynomial time. Using these algorithms we solved all instances of the RK problem found at the OR-LIBRARY, including one for which no optimal solution was known. We also consider the Two-dimensional Cutting Stock problem. We present a column generation based algorithm for this problem that uses the first algorithm above mentioned to generate the columns. We propose two strategies to tackle the residual instances. We also investigate a variant of this problem where the bins have different sizes. At last, we study the Two-dimensional Strip Packing problem. We also present a column generation based algorithm for this problem that uses the second algorithm above mentioned where staged patterns are imposed. In this case we solve instances for two-, three- and four-staged patterns. We report on some computational experiments with the various algorithms we propose in this paper. The results indicate that these algorithms seem to be suitable for solving real-world instances. We give a detailed description (a pseudo-code) of all the algorithms presented here, so that the reader may easily implement these algorithms. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In a Finite Element (FE) analysis of elastic solids several items are usually considered, namely, type and shape of the elements, number of nodes per element, node positions, FE mesh, total number of degrees of freedom (dot) among others. In this paper a method to improve a given FE mesh used for a particular analysis is described. For the improvement criterion different objective functions have been chosen (Total potential energy and Average quadratic error) and the number of nodes and dof's of the new mesh remain constant and equal to the initial FE mesh. In order to find the mesh producing the minimum of the selected objective function the steepest descent gradient technique has been applied as optimization algorithm. However this efficient technique has the drawback that demands a large computation power. Extensive application of this methodology to different 2-D elasticity problems leads to the conclusion that isometric isostatic meshes (ii-meshes) produce better results than the standard reasonably initial regular meshes used in practice. This conclusion seems to be independent on the objective function used for comparison. These ii-meshes are obtained by placing FE nodes along the isostatic lines, i.e. curves tangent at each point to the principal direction lines of the elastic problem to be solved and they should be regularly spaced in order to build regular elements. That means ii-meshes are usually obtained by iteration, i.e. with the initial FE mesh the elastic analysis is carried out. By using the obtained results of this analysis the net of isostatic lines can be drawn and in a first trial an ii-mesh can be built. This first ii-mesh can be improved, if it necessary, by analyzing again the problem and generate after the FE analysis the new and improved ii-mesh. Typically, after two first tentative ii-meshes it is sufficient to produce good FE results from the elastic analysis. Several example of this procedure are presented.

We study the effects of finite temperature on the dynamics of non-planar vortices in the classical, two-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model with XY- or easy-plane symmetry. To this end, we analyze a generalized Landau-Lifshitz equation including additive white noise and Gilbert damping. Using a collective variable theory with no adjustable parameters we derive an equation of motion for the vortices with stochastic forces which are shown to represent white noise with an effective diffusion constant linearly dependent on temperature. We solve these stochastic equations of motion by means of a Green's function formalism and obtain the mean vortex trajectory and its variance. We find a non-standard time dependence for the variance of the components perpendicular to the driving force. We compare the analytical results with Langevin dynamics simulations and find a good agreement up to temperatures of the order of 25% of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature. Finally, we discuss the reasons why our approach is not appropriate for higher temperatures as well as the discreteness effects observed in the numerical simulations.
