A series of Cu-zirconia catalysts containing various additives (Y2O3, La2O3, Al2O3 and CeO2) have been prepared by coprecipitation and their activities and stabilities under operating conditions have been obtained for the steam reforming of methanol. It has been found that an yttria-promoted catalyst containing 30 mol% Cu and 20 mol% of Y2O3 is not only very active but is also very stable under reaction conditions. The yttria appears to stabilise a high copper surface area and may also have a slight promotional effect on the copper. The results obtained with this material compare very favourably with data for the best catalysts reported in the literature. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The present study reports a sonochemical-assisted synthesis of a highly active and coke resistant Ni/TiO2 catalyst for dry and steam reforming of methane. The catalyst was characterized using XRD, TEM, XPS, BET analyzer and TGA/DTA techniques. The TEM analysis showed that Ni nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on TiO2 surface with a narrow size distribution. The catalyst prepared via this approach exhibited excellent activity and stability for both the reactions compared to the reference catalyst prepared from the conventional wet impregnation method. For dry reforming, 86% CH4 conversion and 84% CO2 conversion was obtained at 700 degrees C. Nearly 92% CH4 conversion and 77% CO selectivity was observed under a H2O/CH4 ratio of 1.2 at 700 degrees C for the steam reforming reaction. In particular, the present catalyst is extremely active and resistant to coke formation for steam reforming at low steam/carbon ratios. There is no significant modification of Ni particles size and no coke deposition, even after a long term reaction, demonstrating its potential applicability as an industrial reformate for hydrogen production. The detailed kinetic studies have been presented for steam reforming and the mechanism involving Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics with adsorptive dissociation of CH4 as a rate determining step has been used to correlate the experimental data.

Autothermal reforming of methanol for hydrogen production was investigated over ZnO-ZnCr2O4 supported on a series of metal oxides (Al2O3, CeO2, ZrO2 and CeO2-ZrO2)CeO2-ZrO2 mixed oxides with Ce /Zr molar ratio of 4/1 was found to be the optimal support which showed significant effect on the catalytic activity and selectivity. The ZnO-ZnCr2O4/CeO2-ZrO2 and ZnO-ZnCr2O4 catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, H-2-TPR and XPS. The results show that CeO2-ZrO2 mixed oxides have significant effect on the catalytic performance and the supported catalyst shows more uniform temperature distribution in the catalyst bed which was mainly due to its reasonable redox properties.

Steam reforming of ethanol over CuO/CeO2 was studied. Acetaldehyde and hydrogen were mainly produced at 260degreesC. At 380degreesC, acetone was the main product, and 2 mol of hydrogen was produced from 1 mol of ethanol. The formation of hydrogen accompanied by the production of acetone was considered to proceed through the following, consecutive reactions: dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. aldol condensation of the acetaldehyde, and the reaction of the aldol with the lattice oxygen [O(s)] on the catalyst to form a surface intermediate, followed by its dehydrogenation and decarboxylation. The overall reaction was expressed by2C(2)H(5)OH + H2O --> CH3COCH3 + CO2 + 4H(2). Ceria played an important role as an oxygen supplier. The addition of MgO to CuO/CeO2 resulted in the production of hydrogen at lower temperatures by accelerating aldol condensation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The production of hydrogen by steam reforming of bio-oils obtained from the fast pyrolysis of biomass requires the development of efficient catalysts able to cope with the complex chemical nature of the reactant. The present work focuses on the use of noble metal-based catalysts for the steam reforming of a few model compounds and that of an actual bio-oil. The steam reforming of the model compounds was investigated in the temperature range 650-950 degrees C over Pt, Pd and Rh supported on alumina and a ceria-zirconia sample. The model compounds used were acetic acid, phenol, acetone and ethanol. The nature of the support appeared to play a significant role in the activity of these catalysts. The use of ceria-zirconia, a redox mixed oxide, lead to higher H-2 yields as compared to the case of the alumina-supported catalysts. The supported Rh and Pt catalysts were the most active for the steam reforming of these compounds, while Pd-based catalysts poorly performed. The activity of the promising Pt and Rh catalysts was also investigated for the steam reforming of a bio-oil obtained from beech wood fast pyrolysis. Temperatures close to, or higher than, 800 degrees C were required to achieve significant conversions to COx and H-2 (e.g., H-2 yields around 70%). The ceria-zirconia materials showed a higher activity than the corresponding alumina samples. A Pt/ceria-zirconia sample used for over 9 h showed essentially constant activity, while extensive carbonaceous deposits were observed on the quartz reactor walls from early time on stream. In the present case, no benefit was observed by adding a small amount of O-2 to the steam/bio-oil feed (autothermal reforming, ATR), probably partly due to the already high concentration of oxygen in the bio-oil composition. Co3O4, Fe2O3 and a mixture of the two oxides Co–Fe (molar ratio of Co3O4/Fe2O3 = 0.67 and atomic ratio of Co/Fe = 1) were prepared by the calcination of cobalt oxalate and/or iron oxalate salts at 500 °C for 2 h in static air using water as a solvent/dispersing agent. The catalysts were studied in the steam reforming of ethanol to investigate the effect of the partial substitution of Co3O4 with Fe2O3 on the catalytic behaviour. The reforming activity over Fe2O3, while initially high, underwent fast deactivation. In comparison, over the Co–Fe catalyst both the H2 yield and stability were higher than that found over the pure Co3O4 or Fe2O3 catalysts. DRIFTS-MS studies under the reaction feed highlighted that the Co–Fe catalyst had increased amounts of adsorbed OH/water; similar to Fe2O3. Increasing the amount of reactive species (water/OH species) adsorbed on the Co–Fe catalyst surface is proposed to facilitate the steam reforming reaction rather than decomposition reactions reducing by-product formation and providing a higher H2 yield.

The catalytic activity of Ni/CeO(2)-Al(2)O(3) catalysts modified with noble metals (Pt, Ir, Pd and Ru) was investigated for the steam reform of ethanol and glycerol. The catalysts were characterized by the following techniques: Energy-dispersive X-ray, BET, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The results showed that the formation of inactive nickel aluminate was prevented by the presence of CeO(2) dispersed on alumina. The promoting effect of noble metals included a decrease in the reduction temperatures of NiO species interacting with the support, due to the hydrogen spillover effect. It was seen that the addition of noble metal stabilized the Ni sites in the reduced state along the reforming reaction, increasing the ethanol and glycerol conversions and decreasing the coke formation. The higher catalytic performance for the ethanol steam reforming at 600 degrees C and glycerol steam reforming was obtained for the NiPd and NiPt catalysts, respectively, which presented an effluent gaseous mixture with the highest H(2) yield with reasonably low amounts of CO. The catalytic activity of Ni/La(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3) Catalysts modified with noble metals(Pt and Pd) was investigated in the steam reforming of ethanol. The catalysts were characterized by ICP, S(BFT), X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure (XANES). The results showed that the formation of inactive nickel aluminate was prevented by the presence of La(2)O(3) dispersed on the alumina. The promoting effect of noble metals included a marked decrease in the reduction temperatures of NiO species interacting with the support. due to the hydrogen spillover effect, facilitating greatly the reduction of the promoted catalysts. it was seen that the addition of noble metal stabilized the Ni sites in the reduced state throughout the reaction, increasing ethanol conversion and decreasing coke formation, irrespective of the nature or loading of the noble metal. Catalysts with various nickel loads were prepared on supports of ZrO2, ZrO2-Y2O3 and ZrO2-CaO, characterized by XRD and TPR and tested for activity in ethanol steam reforming. XRD of the supports identified the monoclinic crystalline phase in the ZrO2 and cubic phases in the ZrO2-Y2O3 and ZrO2-CaO supports. In the catalysts, the nickel impregnated on the supports was identified as the NiO phase. In the TPR analysis, peaks were observed showing the NiO phase having different interactions with the supports. In the catalytic tests, practically all the catalysts achieved 100% ethanol conversion, H-2 yield was near 70% and the gaseous concentrations of the other co-products varied in accordance with the equilibrium among them, affected principally by the supports. It was observed that when the ZrO2 was modified with Y2O3 and CaO, there were big changes in the CO and CO2 concentrations, which were attributed to the rise in the number of oxygen vacancies, permitting high-oxygen mobility and affecting the gaseous equilibrium. The liquid products analysis showed a low selectivity to liquid co-products during the reforming reactions. (c) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.
