Neodymium and lead isotope values in sediment samples were used to interpret sediment transport and source rocks on the Southeastern South American upper margin. The sediments of the Argentinian margin exhibit an average epsilon(Nd) value of -1.9, indicating the influence of the Andean rocks as sediment sources. Sediments from the Rio de La Plata estuary show an average epsilon(Nd) value of -9.6 which is similar to that of the Southern Brazilian Upper Margin. Finally, sediments of Southeastern Brazil, which are associated with the transport of the Brazil Current exhibit an average epsilon(Nd) of -13.0. The Pb isotope signatures also confirm the differentiation of source rocks in the sedimentation of the study area. In addition, Pb isotopes helped to establish the extent of the influence of the Rio de La Plata on the sedimentation of the Southern Brazilian margin. In terms of Pb isotopes the sediments from the Rio de La Plata estuary and Southern Brazil are more radiogenic than those of Southeastem Brazil and the Argentinian margin. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Changes in the Brazilian continental margin`s oceanic productivity and circulation over the last 27,000 years were reconstructed based on sedimentological and microfaunal analyses. Our results suggest that oceanic paleoproductivity and the supply of terrigenous sediments to the Brazilian continental margin were higher during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) than during the Holocene. These changes may have been primarily influenced by significant sea level fluctuations that have occurred since the late Pleistocene. During the LGM, the lower sea level, higher productivity and lower sea-surface paleotemperatures may have been the result of the offshore displacement of the main flow of the Brazil Current. However, during the Holocene, the warm waters of the Brazil Current were displaced toward the coast. This displacement contributed to the increase in water temperature and prevented an increase in oceanic productivity. The decrease in terrigenous supply since the LGM could be related to the increase of the extension of the continental shelf and/or drier climatic conditions.

O primeiro registro para o Atlântico Sul ocidental de uma espécie do gênero Malacoraja Stehmann, 1970 é feita com base na descrição de Malacoraja obscura, espécie nova, proveniente do talude continental do Sudeste brasileiro dos estados do Espírito Santo e Rio de Janeiro em profundidades de 808-1105 m. A espécie nova é conhecida através de cinco exemplares e é distinta de seus congêneres pela sua coloração dorsal composta por numerosas manchas esbranquiçadas e pequenas na região do disco e nadadeiras pélvicas, por apresentar uma fileira irregular de espinhos ao longo da superfície dorsal mediana da cauda a qual persiste em espécimes maiores (desde a base da cauda até dois-terços do seu comprimento numa fêmea de 680 mm de comprimento total, CT) e uma região pequena desprovida de dentículos na base ventral da cauda (estendendo somente até a margem distal da nadadeira pélvica). Outros caracteres diagnósticos em combinação incluem a ausência de espinhos escapulares em indivíduos maiores, número elevado de fileiras dentárias (64/62 fileiras num macho subadulto de 505 mm de CT e 76/74 numa fêmea de 680 mm de CT) e de vértebras (27-28 Vtr, 68-75 Vprd), coloração ventral do disco uniformemente castanha escura, duas fenestras pós-ventrais na cintura escapular, fenestra pós-ventral posterior grande, forame magno circular e dois forames para a carótida interna na placa basal ventral do neurocrânio. Machos adultos não são conhecidos, porém uma descrição anatômica de M. obscura, sp. nov., é fornecida. Comparações são realizadas com todo o material conhecido de M. kreffti, com a literatura sobre M. senta e com material abundante de M. spinacidermis da África do Sul; M. obscura, sp. nov., assemelha-se mais a M. spinacidermis do Atlântico Sul oriental em esqueleto dérmico, coloração e tamanho. Malacoraja é monofilético devido à sua espinulação e apêndices rostrais conspícuos e é aparentemente composta por dois grupos de espécies, um para M. obscura e M. spinacidermis e outro para M. kreffti e M. senta, porém a elucidação das relações filogenéticas entre as espécies necessita de mais informações anatômicas, principalmente das duas últimas espécies.

Benthic foraminiferal assemblages in Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments were studied at Sites 511, 512, 513, and 514 drilled during Leg 71 in the southwestern Atlantic on the Maurice Ewing Bank and in the Argentine Basin. Benthic foraminifers in almost all stratigraphic subdivisions of Sites 511 and 512 reflect the gradual subsidence of the Falkland Plateau from shelf depths in the Barremian-Albian, when a semiclosed basin with restricted circulation of water masses and anaerobic conditions existed, to lower bathyal depths in the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic, with an abrupt acceleration at the boundary of Lower and Upper Cretaceous. The composition, distribution, and preservation of Late Cretaceous assemblages of benthic foraminifers suggest considerable fluctuations of the foraminiferal lysocline and the CCD. This is evidenced by dissolution facies and foraminiferal assemblages in which agglutinated and resistant calcareous forms predominated during high stands of the CCD and by calcareous facies in which rich assemblages of calcareous species predominated during low stands. The highest position of the CCD on the Plateau (less than 1500-2000 m) was in the late Cenomanian, Turonian, and Coniacian. In the Santonian and Campanian the CCD was at depths below 1500-2000 meters. At the end of the Campanian the CCD shifted again to depths comparable with those of Cenomanian and Turonian time. In the latest Campanian and the Maestrichtian the CCD was low and nanno-foraminiferal oozes with a rich assemblage of benthic foraminifers accumulated. Foraminiferal assemblages at Sites 513 and 514 in the Argentine Basin also testify to oceanic subsidence from lower bathyal depths in the Oligocene to abyssal ones at present. This process was complicated by the influence of geographical migrations of the Polar Front caused by extensions of the ice sheet in the Antarctic after the opening of the Drake Passage during the Oligocene. In Mesozoic and Cenozoic deposits of the Falkland Plateau and the Argentine Basin seven assemblages of benthic foraminifers were distinguished by age: early-middle Albian, middle-late Albian, Late Cretaceous (including four groups), middle Eocene, late Eocene-early Miocene, middle-late Miocene, and Pliocene-Quaternary. The Albian assemblages contain many species common to the foraminiferal fauna of the Austral Biogeographical Province. The Late Cretaceous assemblage contains, along with Austral species, species common to foraminifers of North America, Western Europe, the Russian platform, and the south of the U.S.S.R. Deep-sea cosmopolitan species prevail in Cenozoic assemblages.

The Labrador Sea is a basin with oceanic crust in its deep part. Bottom morphology of the Labrador Sea is rather complicated. Data of seismic profiling in this region indicate presence of numerous submarine mountains and hills, which are dominated by volcanic rocks. Some chemical and mineral characteristics of the rocks, in particular, high concentrations of alkalis and phosphorus, and presence of high-titanium augite, ilmenite, and devitrified glass enriched in K and Na, allow us to attribute them to K-Na subalkaline picrites typical for ocean islands, seamounts, and oceanic plateaus. Rocks of the K-Na subalkaline series usually form submarine basements and subaerial volcanoes of ocean islands, seamounts, and oceanic plateaus. Thus, the suggestion on formation of the highs on the continental crust is not confirmed by petrographic data, which require a refinement of the tectonic model of the northern part of the Labrador Sea.

Fishes of the family Scorpaenidae are responsible for severe injuries and occasionally deaths in humans around the world. The more venomous fishes on the Brazilian coast and in the Southwestern Atlantic region are classified in the genus Scorpaena (family Scorpaenidae). However, there are few studies on the venomous apparatus, the effects of the venom, or clinical aspects of human envenoming provoked by Atlantic scorpionfishes.In this communication, the authors present 23 accidents caused by scorpionfishes of the genus Scorpaena among fishermen, and report the species that provoked the injuries, the circumstances of contacts, the clinical aspects observed and the therapeutic measures utilized for control of the symptoms of the victims. The intense pain and the systemic findings observed in the patients were very frequent and we think that the injuries provoked by scorpionfishes should be considered the most important manifestations caused by venomous fishes of the East Atlantic Ocean. The larval development of the spider crab Epialtus bituberculatus H. Milne Edwards which Lives on rocky shores with algae such as Sargassum and Hypneia, is described. Larvae were obtained from ovigerous females collected in Ubatuba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Rearing was carried out at 24 +/- 1 degreesC, with an average salinity of 35 parts per thousand. Larval development consists of two zoeal stages and one megalopa. Zoeal development was completed in 9.5 days. Analysis indicated that zoeae of E. bituberculatus are very similar to those of E. brasiliensis Dana and Acanthonyx scutiformis (Dana). Differences noted between these species pertain to the setation of the carapace, maxillule and second maxilliped. The main morphological features useful for identification are presented together with a summary of features that characterize larvae of majid subfamilies in Brazil. A key for the identification of southwestern Atlantic majid zoeae to the family level is provided.

Habitat of juvenile Caribbean reef sharks, Carcharhinus perezi (Carcharhinidae), was identified using fishing surveys and capture of immature specimens at two Brazilian insular sites in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and Atol das Rocas. Standardized sampling at Fernando de Noronha indicated that parturition occurred from February to April and that a wide depth-range (at least 5-30 m) along the insular shelf was used by immature sharks throughout the year. The catch-per-unit effort of C. perezi was significantly higher inside than outside a marine protected area at this location, suggesting that these sharks are more common in pans of the reef least disturbed by human activities. More limited sampling at Atol das Rocas suggested that juvenile C. perezi occurred at similar depths and utilized similar substrate as sharks at Fernando de Noronha. These findings suggest that successful conservation and management of this economically important, protected species will need to include conservation of habitat around insular reef systems. Butterflyfishes of the genus Chaetodon (Chaetodontidae) are mostly bottom-feeders, and juveniles of some Pacific species are known to clean other fish, Herein we report on occasional cleaning by adult individuals of the Western Atlantic butterflyfish Chaetodon striatus, during their plankton-feeding aggregation, Four species of reef fish solicited cleaning to the butterflyfish amidst the aggregation.
