Anthocyanins are the largest group of water-soluble pigments in the plant kingdom. A number of studies have demonstrated that anthocyanins present antioxidant capacity and show inhibitory effects on the growth of some cancer cells. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate both the antimutagenicity/antigenotoxicity and mutagenicity/genotoxicity of aqueous extract obtained from the Solanum melanogena, a possible novel source of anthocyanin, and its main purified anthocyanin extract (delphinidin), using the single cell (comet) assay and micronucleus test. Pretreatment with higher doses of the purified anthocyanin (10 and 20 mg/kg b.w.) led to a statistically significant reduction (p < 0.05) in the frequency of micronuclei in polychromatic erythrocytes induced by cyclophosphamide. The pattern of reduction ranged from 48% to 57% independent of concentration. No apparent: genotoxicity and mutagenicity was found for either the anthocyanin or delphinidin extracts. Taken together, these results suggest that mice pre-treated with specific compounds present in anthocyanins (delphinidin) displayed a lower incidence of mutations induced by cyclophosphamide. This finding emphasizes the potential of natural colorants to prevent mutations and also the applicability of genotoxic evaluation for improving health. Furthermore, the results presented here could be an additional argument to support the use of anthocyanins in the diet. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

This study was carried out at the Department of Plant Production, Sector Horticulture, São Paulo State University-UNESP, Botucatu Campus, São Paulo State, Brazil in order to evaluate the effect of sources and increasing doses of potassium in roots of eggplant. The experimental design was randomized blocks in factorial scheme 2 x 4 (two sources of potassium: KCl and K(2)SO(4) and four doses of K(2)O, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 kg ha(-1)) and three replications. For the experiment, we used Oxisol medium texture (615 g of sand, 45 g of silt and 340 g of clay per kg soil). The soil passed through sieve of 5 mm and packed in plastic pots with a capacity of 32 liters of soil where plants were grown. The pots were distributed with a spacing of 0,63 m between plants and 1,0 m between rows each pot being grown with a plant. The evaluated characteristics were: root dry mass and volume of the root. It was concluded that sources and excessive doses of mineral K(2)O induces stress in eggplants and affect the roots being less harmful K(2)SO(4) source.

Although neotropical savannas and grasslands, collectively referred to as cerrado, are rich in seed-eating species of rodents, little is known about seed predation and its determinants in this habitat. In this study, we investigated seed predation and damage to fruits of the widespread shrub Solarium lycocarpurn. In addition, the influence of two possible determinants (distance from the parental plant and total crop size) on the feeding behaviour of Oryzorrys scotti (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) was also examined. O. scotti were captured more frequently close to the shrubs or on shrub crops, indicating that these rodents were attracted to the shrubs and that seed predation was probably distance-dependent. Moreover, the proportion of damaged fruit on the plant decreased as the total crop size increased; consequently, more productive plants were attacked proportionally less by rodents. This pattern of fruit damage may reflect predator satiation caused by the consumption of a large amount of pulp. Alternatively, secondary metabolites in S. lycocarpum fruits may reduce the pulp consumption per feeding event, thereby limiting the number of fruits damaged. (c) 2006 Elsevier Masson SAS. Total and individual carotenoid concentrations were determined by spectro photometry and HPLC, in raw tubers of a sample of 23 accessions of Solanum phureja potatoes taken at random from the world germplasm collection following its stratification on tuber flesh color. Lutein, zeaxanthin, violaxanthin, antheraxanthin and beta-carotene were detected in all accessions and three distinct patterns of carotenoid accumulation were evidenced by cluster analysis. Accessions in group 1 showed the highest concentrations of total carotenoids (1258-1840 mu g 100 g(-1) FW) comprised largely of zeaxanthin (658-1290 mu g 100 g(-1) FW) with very low or no presence of beta-carotene (below 5.4 mu g 100 g(-1) FW). Accessions in group 2 presented moderate total carotenoid concentrations with violaxanthin, antheraxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin as the major carotenoids. Accessions in group 3 showed low concentrations of total carotenoids (97-262 mu g 100 g(-1) FW) and very low or no zeaxanthin, with lutein and violaxanthin as the predominant carotenoids and relatively high concentrations of beta-carotene(up to 27 mu g 100 g(-1) FW). Five accessions with significant concentrations of zeaxanthin were identified with the accession 703566 showing the highest concentration (1290 p g 100 g(-1) FW). This value is to our knowledge higher than any value previously reported for potatoes, including those achieved through genetic modification. For the 23 S. phureja accessions, total carotenoid concentration was positively and significantly correlated with antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin concentrations, and negatively and significantly correlated with beta-carotene concentration. Several spider species use plants as shelter and foraging sites, but the relationships among these organisms are still poorly known. Lynx spiders of the genus Peucetia do not build webs, and many species live strictly in plants bearing glandular trichomes. Peucetia flava Keyserling 1877 inhabits Solanum thomasifolium in southeastern Brazil and usually preys on herbivores and other small insects adhered to the glandular trichomes of its host plant. To evaluate the potential anti-herbivore protection. of this spider species for S. thomasifolium, we glued termites used as herbivore models oil trichomes of S. thomasifolium and on neighboring plants lacking glandular trichomes. leaf miner damage and spider density were recorded for S. thomasifolium plants in July 1997. There was a positive relationship between plant size and spider density. The removal or termites in S. thomasifolium by P. flava was higher than ill plants without glandular trichomes. The leaf miner damage was negatively related to spider density. Our results Suggest that P. flava may be all important plant bodyguard in the defense of S. thomasifolium from its natural herbivores.
