The objectives of this study were to develop a questionnaire that evaluates the perception of nursing workers to job factors that may contribute to musculoskeletal symptoms, and to evaluate its psychometric properties. Internationally recommended methodology was followed: construction of domains, items and the instrument as a whole, content validity, and pre-test. Psychometric properties were evaluated among 370 nursing workers. Construct validity was analyzed by the factorial analysis, known-groups technique, and convergent validity. Reliability was assessed through internal consistency and stability. Results indicated satisfactory fit indices during confirmatory factor analysis, significant difference (p < 0.01) between the responses of nursing and office workers, and moderate correlations between the new questionnaire and Numeric Pain Scale, SF-36 and WRFQ. Cronbach's alpha was close to 0.90 and ICC values ranged from 0.64 to 0.76. Therefore, results indicated that the new questionnaire had good psychometric properties for use in studies involving nursing workers.

A participative ergonomics approach to reducing injuries associated with manual tasks is widely promoted; however only limited evidence from uncontrolled trials has been available to support the efficacy of such an approach. This paper reports on a randomized and controlled trial of PErforM, a participative ergonomics intervention designed to reduce the risks of injury associated with manual tasks. One hundred and seventeen small to medium sized food, construction, and health workplaces were audited by government inspectors using a manual tasks risk assessment tool (ManTRA). Forty-eight volunteer workplaces were then randomly assigned to Experimental and Control groups with the Experimental group receiving the PErforM program. Inspectors audited the workplaces again, 9 months following the intervention. The results showed a significant decrease in estimates of manual task risk and suggested better legal compliance in the Experimental group.

Aim: To identify how the methodology of Reflection Groups (RG) can contribute to approach social-psychological problems, so often observed as obstacles in PE efforts. The objective was also to verify the contributions from RG to the implementation of ergonomics recommendations, which were a starting point and organized group discussions. Method: A concrete case was used as an illustration, and studied in depth: RG with administration and production workers` representatives from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of a cardiologic hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil. RG are temporary thinking groups, taking place outside the workplace and having delegative and consultive participation. They make use of Operative Groups, an adapted form of tripartite group, activity as an instrumental resource, group dynamic techniques and videotaping. In 2007, 31 meetings took place during paid working hours with 7 groups of different composition, ranging from 1.5 h to 3 h. Results: Additionally to the positive effects in communication and psychosocial environment, RG could also contribute to changes in interpersonal relationships, cooperation, personal and work behaviours. By dealing with aspects which could hinder the explicit task: fears, conflicts, and stereotyped beliefs and behaviours; resistance to change could be broken and group members could learn. RG allowed input about new risks; continuous information and feedback about ongoing ergonomics interventions so that immediate corrective action could be taken. The main form of participation was in administrative, organizational, and psychosocial problems which required a better clarification and identification of their real causes, commitment, and elaboration of strategies and negotiation of different stakeholders in their solution. Conclusion: RG takes advantage of homogeneous and heterogeneous groups, in face to face communication. The interactions in the groups are task-oriented (explicit task) but attaining groups` goals depends on a relational interaction (implicit task). Relevance to industry: Reflection groups can bring important contributions to ergonomics and industry because they favour the discussion, disclosure of problems and incorporation of solutions, enabling interventions in working organization, psychosocial environment and relationships in a collective and participatory approach, promoting health and social integration. During the recent years human society evolved from the “industrial society age” and transitioned into the “knowledge society age”. This means that knowledge media support migrated from “pen and paper” to computer-based Information Systems. Due to this fact Ergonomics has assumed an increasing importance, as a science/technology that deals with the problem of adapting the work to the man, namely in terms of Usability. This paper presents some relevant Ergonomics, Usability and User-centred design concepts regarding Information Systems.

[Excerpt] It seems that significant progress has been made in last years in what concerns the scientific knowledge about work and its impact on workers’ wellbeing and health, which includes but it is not limited to occupational ergonomics and safety. Even considering that this domain is very transversal and comprehensive, as it may include researchers from multidisciplinary teams, research in this domain has clearly increased and we have now a larger number of scientific events, a higher number of researchers publishing their works, and a high emergence rate of research groups at universities and other research institutions, which was also followed by an increasing concern about these issues by governments and other regulators. Even though it is strikingly difficult to demonstrate it in an unequivocal way, this appears to have had a clear effect on companies and on their ability to implement plans and measures to prevent and control occupational risk factors. But despite these advances, occupational risk prevention is still a domain for which solutions are neither complete nor permanent, since the evolution of work systems gives rise to new challenges.

[Excerpt] This section is the second part of a special issue on Occupational Ergonomics and Safety, which was organized for WORK: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment and Rehabilitation. As in the first part of this thematic issue, this one comprises thirteen papers that were peer-reviewed and, finally, accepted for publication. This issue includes the work of authors from eleven countries all over the world. The variety of the presented works is not limited to their geographical origin, but it is also visible on the topics that are addressed, ranging from typical studies on ergonomics to safety management studies, as well as occupational hygiene topics.

BACKGROUND: Lean Production Systems (LPS) have become very popular among manufacturing industries, services and large commercial areas. A LPS must develop and consider a set of work features to bring compatibility with workplace ergonomics, namely at a muscular, cognitive and emotional demands level. OBJECTIVE: Identify the most relevant impacts of the adoption of LPS from the ergonomics point of view and summarizes some possible drawbacks for workplace ergonomics due to a flawed application of the LPS. The impacts identified are focused in four dimensions: work pace, intensity and load; worker motivation, satisfaction and stress; autonomy and participation; and health outcome. This paper also discusses the influence that the work organization model has on workplace ergonomics and on the waste elimination previewed by LPS. METHODS: Literature review focused LPS and its impact on occupational ergonomics conditions, as well as on the Health and Safety of workers. The main focus of this research is on LPS implementations in industrial environments and mainly in manufacturing industry workplaces. This is followed by a discussion including the authors’ experience (and previous research). RESULTS: From the reviewed literature it seems that there is no consensus on how Lean principles affect the workplace ergonomics since most authors found positive (advantages) and negative (disadvantages) impacts. CONCLUSIONS: The negative impacts or disadvantages of LPS implementations reviewed may result from the misunderstanding of the Lean principles. Possibly, they also happen due to partial Lean implementations (when only one or two tools were implemented) that may be effective in a specific work context but not suitable to all possible situations as the principles of LPS should not lead, by definition, to any of the reported drawbacks in terms of workplace ergonomics.

This study aimed to develop appropriate changes in a pair of shoes in order to improve the gait of an individual selected for this case study. This analysis took into account ergonomic aspects, namely those relating to the individual’s anthropometrics. Gait analysis was done with the adapted footwear both before and after intervention.A conventional X-ray was performed, which revealed a 29-mm left lower limb shortening and possible foot adduction. The anthropometric assessment confirmed a 27-mm asymmetry between the left knee and foot.Corrective changes were implemented in the left boot, with a 20-mm increase in the plantar aspect and approximately 30-mm in the calcaneus area.The pressure-mapping system WalkinSense was used for the kinetic gait analysis. Results showed some improvement in plantar pressure distribution after corrective changes in footwear. Peak pressure in the left foot decreased from 2.8kg/cm2 to 1.6kg/cm2. The second peak also showed a marked decrease. The right foot presented with a reduction in peak plantar pressure from 2.7kg/cm2 to 2.3kg/cm2.After identifying asymmetries, the associated pathologies and modifyingthe footwear, a kinetic analysis of gait before and after altering the footwear was undertaken, which showed improvements in the gait. According to the obtained results, it was possible to demonstrate that the initially proposed objectives were achieved, i.e., the changes in footwear resulted in an improvement of the analyzed individual.

AIM OF THE STUDY: To analyse the course of upper limb edema in patients with an arteriovenous fistula used for dialysis and to analyse the available therapeutic options. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of patients with this type of edema, who were treated in our institution from 1992 to 1996. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven consecutive patients with an arterioveinous fistula treated for edema of the upper extremity, were reviewed. The fistula was created at the elbow in 6 patients and at the forearm in 1. The edema appeared immediately after operation in 4 patients and after a delay in 3 patients. Stenosis (3 patients) or occlusion (2 patients) of the subclavian vein was documented in 5 patients who were investigated by angiography. RESULTS: The edema regressed spontaneously in 4 patients because collaterals developed in 3 patients, and the fistula thrombosed in 1 patient. Surgical intervention allowed regression of the edema in the other 3 patients: excessive output of the fistula was reduced in 2 patients and an axillojugular bypass was performed in 1 patient. The fistula remained effective in 6 patients. Another fistula was performed on the contralateral arm in 1 patient. CONCLUSION: Non-operative management is recommended in patients who develop edema immediately after creation of the fistula, because spontaneous regression is likely. Measures aimed at reducing the output of the fistula or enhancing the venous capacities of the arm are required when edema appears at a later stage. The fistula can be saved in the majority of cases.

Objectives This article presents a psychological approach to substance use in sport using a dynamic and situated activity framework. The aim was to analyze the various relationships between activity and the consumption of substances during the sporting life course of athletes who recognized doping violation. Design Data were collected from secondary sources and biographical and self-confrontational interviews to build traces of the past activity. Method Twelve doping athletes or those admitting to having used banned substances volunteered to participate. The data were coded and compared to identify typical activities and their intrinsic dynamics. Results Six activities were identified: "Agree to use," "Drop out of a non-viable state," Return to a former state," "Prevent a potential deficiency," "Maintain an acquired state," and "Balance the sporting life with substance use," comprising 11 patterns. Conclusions The athletes' activity embedded substance use in reciprocal relationships that consisted of freezing, exploring and exploiting fields of possible actions created and offered by the situation dynamics. Recommendations for situated and dynamic prevention are provided.
