Estuarine systems play an important role in the retention of toxic trace elements owing to the affinity of these elements with particles dissolved in water. This work presents the use of a voltammetric sensor to monitor heavy metal (Zn (II), Cd(II) and Pb (II)) concentrations in the Cananeia-Iguape Estuarine-Lagoon region (Sao Paulo State, Brazil). Lower concentrations were found in the Southern estuarine system (Cananeia City) and increased concentrations observed in the Northern sector (Iguape City) were promoted by anthropogenic activities, with particular influence from the historical introduction of mining wastes and inputs from agricultural, industrial and domestic effluents. The proposed method is reliable, inexpensive and fast, can simultaneously provide information on the concentration of these metallic ions and can be easily used for field measurements aboard oceanographic ships.

We report three developments toward resolving the challenge of the apparent basal polytomy of neoavian birds. First, we describe improved conditional down-weighting techniques to reduce noise relative to signal for deeper divergences and find increased agreement between data sets. Second, we present formulae for calculating the probabilities of finding predefined groupings in the optimal tree. Finally, we report a significant increase in data: nine new mitochondrial (mt) genomes (the dollarbird, New Zealand kingfisher, great potoo, Australian owlet-nightjar, white-tailed trogon, barn owl, a roadrunner [a ground cuckoo], New Zealand long-tailed cuckoo, and the peach-faced lovebird) and together they provide data for each of the six main groups of Neoaves proposed by Cracraft J (2001). We use his six main groups of modern birds as priors for evaluation of results. These include passerines, cuckoos, parrots, and three other groups termed “WoodKing” (woodpeckers/rollers/kingfishers), “SCA” (owls/potoos/owlet-nightjars/hummingbirds/swifts), and “Conglomerati.” In general, the support is highly significant with just two exceptions, the owls move from the “SCA” group to the raptors, particularly accipitrids (buzzards/eagles) and the osprey, and the shorebirds may be an independent group from the rest of the “Conglomerati”. Molecular dating mt genomes support a major diversification of at least 12 neoavian lineages in the Late Cretaceous. Our results form a basis for further testing with both nuclear-coding sequences and rare genomic changes.

Background Evolutionary biologists are often misled by convergence of morphology and this has been common in the study of bird evolution. However, the use of molecular data sets have their own problems and phylogenies based on short DNA sequences have the potential to mislead us too. The relationships among clades and timing of the evolution of modern birds (Neoaves) has not yet been well resolved. Evidence of convergence of morphology remain controversial. With six new bird mitochondrial genomes (hummingbird, swift, kagu, rail, flamingo and grebe) we test the proposed Metaves/Coronaves division within Neoaves and the parallel radiations in this primary avian clade. Results Our mitochondrial trees did not return the Metaves clade that had been proposed based on one nuclear intron sequence. We suggest that the high number of indels within the seventh intron of the β-fibrinogen gene at this phylogenetic level, which left a dataset with not a single site across the alignment shared by all taxa, resulted in artifacts during analysis. With respect to the overall avian tree, we find the flamingo and grebe are sister taxa and basal to the shorebirds (Charadriiformes). Using a novel site-stripping technique for noise-reduction we found this relationship to be stable. The hummingbird/swift clade is outside the large and very diverse group of raptors, shore and sea birds. Unexpectedly the kagu is not closely related to the rail in our analysis, but because neither the kagu nor the rail have close affinity to any taxa within this dataset of 41 birds, their placement is not yet resolved. Conclusion Our phylogenetic hypothesis based on 41 avian mitochondrial genomes (13,229 bp) rejects monophyly of seven Metaves species and we therefore conclude that the members of Metaves do not share a common evolutionary history within the Neoaves.

To meet the urgent requirement of determining trace Pb2+ and Cd2+ in seawater on site, herein we developed a simple but novel electrochemical method, named as double stripping voltammetry, using only a portable heavy metal analyzer. The proposed method consisted of three steps: First, the targeted heavy metal ions in bulk solution were concentrated onto an ionic liquid-graphite-based paste working electrode (ILGPE), which exhibits a dramatic ability of accumulation, by electrodeposition in the presence of Bi3+. Second, the three-electrode arrangement, including the ILGPE loaded with the reduced products, was transferred into 1.0mL acetate buffer solution, followed by a stripping procedure. Third, the measurement was performed with the other stripping voltammetry procedure by using a glassy carbon electrode as working electrode. Under optimum conditions, the linear range values for Pb2+ and Cd2+ in seawater were 0.2-3.2 μg/L and 0.1-3.2 μg/L, respectively. The concentrations of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in five real samples collected from coastal sites of Qingdao City were determined on site, and the results were in good agreement with that obtained with the atomic absorption spectroscopy method. In addition, the analytical performance of working electrode modified with Bi film by in situ mode was investigated in comparison with that by ex situ mode. The results showed that the in situ mode was much better than the ex situ one.

Nanocrystalline TiO2 deposited on conducting glass plates is shown to be an excellent material for preconcentration of silver and mercury, via photochemical reaction, prior to their detection by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). During the first stage of growth in the photoreduction of silver or mercury, 3D nuclei are formed on the TiO2 film. As the deposition proceeds micrometer size agglomerates grow on the surface. The conical morphology of the silver nuclei grown on a (110) rutile single crystal in the initial stages of growth suggests that there is a preferential deposition of silver at the centre of the growing nuclei. When the nuclei size reach a critical value (ca. 400 nm diameter, 40 nm height) the morphology changes to a globular shape without any preferential site for deposition on the surface of the silver nucleus. It was observed that micromolar concentrations of silver or mercury can be detected by anodic stripping voltammetry and relatively large amounts of these metals (micrometer scale nuclei) can be loaded on the nanocrystalline TiO2 film surface. The latter opens the possibility of analytical applications of nanocrystalline TiO2 electrodes for the selective detection of silver or mercury via photochemical anodic stripping voltammetry.

This paper presents an electrochemical instrumentation system capable of real-time in situ detection of heavy metals. A practical approach to introduce acidity compensation against changes in amplitude of the peak currents is also presented. The compensated amplitudes can then be used to predict the concentration level of heavy metals. The system uses differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, which is a precise and sensitive analytical method with excellent limits of detection. The instrument is capable of detecting lead, cadmium, zinc, nickel and copper with good sensitivity and precision. The system avoids expensive and time-consuming procedures and may be used in a variety of situations to help environmental assessment and control.

We report time evolution studies of low coverage CO adsorption (surface hydrogen site blocking < 40%) and oxidative stripping on stepped Pt(776) and Pt(554) surfaces. It was observed that there is no preferential site occupancy for CO adsorption on step or terrace. It is proposed that CO adsorption onto these surfaces is a random process, and after CO adsorption there is no appreciable shift from CO-(111) to CO-(110) sites. This implies that after adsorption, CO molecules either have a very long residence time, or that the diffusion coefficient is much lower than previously thought. After CO electrooxidation the sites released included both terrace (111) and step (110) orientations. For surface hydrogen site blocking > 40%, the lateral interactions might play a role in the preferential CO site occupancy. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Oceanographic changes in the western equatorial Pacific during the past 6 m.y. are inferred from carbon isotopic analyses of planktonic and benthic foraminifers from Ontong Java Plateau (DSDP Site 586). Sample spacing is 1.5 m (ca. 35,000-75,000 yr). An overall trend of d13C toward lighter values is evident for the last 5 m.y. in all four foraminiferal taxa analyzed (G. sacculifer, Pulleniatina, P. wuellerstorfi, and O. umbonatus). This trend is interpreted as an enrichment of the global ocean with 12C, because of the addition of carbon from organic carbon reservoirs (or lack of removal of carbon to such reservoirs), as a consequence of an overall drop in sea level. Differences between shallow- and deep-water d13C decrease slightly during this time interval, suggesting a moderate drop in productivity. This drop is not sufficient to explain the drop in sedimentation rate, however, much of which apparently must be ascribed to winnowing effects. A marked convergence in the d13C values of planktonic taxa exists within the last 2 m.y. We propose that this convergence indicates nutrient depletion in thermocline waters, caused by the vigorous removal of phosphate in marginal upwelling regions, or by the stripping of intermediate waters in their source regions. No large shifts are seen in the carbon isotope record of the last 6 m.y., in contrast to the oxygen isotope record. Some indication of cyclicity is present, with a period between 0.5 and 1.0 m.y. (especially in the earlier portion of the record).
