In this research report, a sintering process of porous ceramic materials based on Al2O3 was employed using a method where a cation precursor solution is embedded in an organic fibrous cotton matrix. For porous green bodies, the precursor solution and cotton were annealed at temperatures in the range of 100-1600°C using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis to obtain a porous body formation and disposal process containing organic fibers and precursor solution. In a structure consisting of open pores and interconnected nanometric grains, despite the low porosity of around 40% (calculated geometrically), nitrogen physisorption determined a specific surface area of 14m2/g, which shows much sintering of porous bodies. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analytical methods revealed a predominant amount of α-Al2O3 in the sintered samples. Thermal properties of the sintered Al2O3 fibers were obtained by using the Laser Flash which resulted in the lower thermal conductivity obtained by α-Al2O3 and therefore improved its potential use as an insulating material. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Heat and mass transfer of a porous permeable wall in a high temperature gas dynamical flow is considered. Numerical simulation is conducted on the ground of the conjugate mathematical model which includes filtration and heat transfer equations in a porous body and boundary layer equations on its surface. Such an approach enables one to take into account complex interaction between heat and mass transfer in the gasdynamical flow and in the structure subjected to this flow. The main attention is given to the impact of the intraporous heat transfer intensity on the transpiration cooling efficiency.

Part I

The slow, viscous flow past a thin screen is analyzed based on Stokes equations. The problem is reduced to an associated electric potential problem as introduced by Roscoe. Alternatively, the problem is formulated in terms of a Stokeslet distribution, which turns out to be equivalent to the first approach.

Special interest is directed towards the solution of the Stokes flow past a circular annulus. A "Stokeslet" formulation is used in this analysis. The problem is finally reduced to solving a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Numerical data for the drag coefficient and the mean velocity through the hole of the annulus are obtained.

Stokes flow past a circular screen with numerous holes is also attempted by assuming a set of approximate boundary conditions. An "electric potential" formulation is used, and the problem is also reduced to solving a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Drag coefficient and mean velocity through the screen are computed.

Part II

The purpose of this investigation is to formulate correctly a set of boundary conditions to be prescribed at the interface between a viscous flow region and a porous medium so that the problem of a viscous flow past a porous body can be solved.

General macroscopic equations of motion for flow through porous media are first derived by averaging Stokes equations over a volume element of the medium. These equations, including viscous stresses for the description, are more general than Darcy's law. They reduce to Darcy's law when the Darcy number becomes extremely small.

The interface boundary conditions of the first kind are then formulated with respect to the general macroscopic equations applied within the porous region. An application of such equations and boundary conditions to a Poiseuille shear flow problem demonstrates that there usually exists a thin interface layer immediately inside the porous medium in which the tangential velocity varies exponentially and Darcy's law does not apply.

With Darcy's law assumed within the porous region, interface boundary conditions of the second kind are established which relate the flow variables across the interface layer. The primary feature is a jump condition on the tangential velocity, which is found to be directly proportional to the normal gradient of the tangential velocity immediately outside the porous medium. This is in agreement with the experimental results of Beavers, et al.

The derived boundary conditions are applied in the solutions of two other problems: (1) Viscous flow between a rotating solid cylinder and a stationary porous cylinder, and (2) Stokes flow past a porous sphere.

The present study reports the results of the detailed in vitro bioactivity and cytocompatibility properties of the hydroxyapatite (HA) and the HA-titanium (HA-Ti) composite with varying amount of Ti (5, 10, and 20 wt %), densified using spark plasma sintering process (SPS). Using this technique and tailoring suitable processing parameters, it has been possible to retain both HA and Ti in the sintered ceramics. Importantly, the uniquely designed SPS processing with suitably chosen parameters enables in achieving better mechanical properties, such as higher indentation fracture toughness (similar to 1.5 MPa m1/2) in HA-Ti composites compared with HA. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations reveal good bioactivity of the HA-Ti composites with the formation of thick, flaky, and porous apatite layer when immersed in simulated body fluid at 37 degrees C and pH of 7.4. Atomic absorption spectroscopic analysis of the simulated body fluid solution reveals dynamic changes in Ca+2 ion concentration with more dissolution of Ca+2 ion from the HA-20Ti composite. However, the measurements with inductively coupled plasma spectrometer do not record dissolution of Ti+4 ions. Transmission electron microscopic analysis indicates weak crystalline nature of the apatite and confirms the formation of fine-scale apatite crystals. MTT assay, fluorescence, and SEM study demonstrate good cell viability and cell adhesion/proliferation of the Saos -2 cells, cultured on the developed composites under standard culture condition, and the difference in cell viability has been discussed in reference to substrate composition and roughness. Overall, HA-Ti composites exhibit comparable and even better in vitro bioactivity and cytocompatibility properties than HA. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Inflammation and the formation of an avascular fibrous capsule have been identified as the key factors controlling the wound healing associated failure of implantable glucose sensors. Our aim is to guide advantageous tissue remodeling around implanted sensor leads by the temporal release of dexamethasone (Dex), a potent anti-inflammatory agent, in combination with the presentation of a stable textured surface.

First, Dex-releasing polyurethane porous coatings of controlled pore size and thickness were fabricated using salt-leaching/gas-foaming technique. Porosity, pore size, thickness, drug release kinetics, drug loading amount, and drug bioactivity were evaluated. In vitro sensor functionality test were performed to determine if Dex-releasing porous coatings interfered with sensor performance (increased signal attenuation and/or response times) compared to bare sensors. Drug release from coatings monitored over two weeks presented an initial fast release followed by a slower release. Total release from coatings was highly dependent on initial drug loading amount. Functional in vitro testing of glucose sensors deployed with porous coatings against glucose standards demonstrated that highly porous coatings minimally affected signal strength and response rate. Bioactivity of the released drug was determined by monitoring Dex-mediated, dose-dependent apoptosis of human peripheral blood derived monocytes in culture.

The tissue modifying effects of Dex-releasing porous coatings were accessed by fully implanting Tygon® tubing in the subcutaneous space of healthy and diabetic rats. Based on encouraging results from these studies, we deployed Dex-releasing porous coatings from the tips of functional sensors in both diabetic and healthy rats. We evaluated if the tissue modifying effects translated into accurate, maintainable and reliable sensor signals in the long-term. Sensor functionality was accessed by continuously monitoring glucose levels and performing acute glucose challenges at specified time points.

Sensors treated with porous Dex-releasing coatings showed diminished inflammation and enhanced vascularization of the tissue surrounding the implants in healthy rats. Functional sensors with Dex-releasing porous coatings showed enhanced sensor sensitivity over a 21-day period when compared to controls. Enhanced sensor sensitivity was accompanied with an increase in sensor signal lag and MARD score. These results indicated that Dex-loaded porous coatings were able to elicit a favorable tissue response, and that such tissue microenvironment could be conducive towards extending the performance window of glucose sensors in vivo.

The diabetic pilot animal study showed differences in wound healing patters between healthy and diabetic subjects. Diabetic rats showed lower levels of inflammation and vascularization of the tissue surrounding implants when compared to their healthy counterparts. Also, functional sensors treated with Dex-releasing porous coatings did not show enhanced sensor sensitivity over a 21-day period. Moreover, increased in sensor signal lag and MARD scores were present in porous coated sensors regardless of Dex-loading when compared to bare implants. These results suggest that the altered wound healing patterns presented in diabetic tissues may lead to premature sensor failure when compared to sensors implanted in healthy rats.

Doped ceria (CeO2,) compounds are fluorite type oxides, which show oxide ionic conductivity higher than yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), in oxidizing atmospheres. As a consequence of this, considerable interest has been shown in application of these materials for 'low (500-650 degreesC)' or 'intermediate (650-800 degreesC)' temperature operation, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this study, the authors prepared two kinds of nanosize Sm-doped CeO2 particles with different morphologies: one type was round and the other was elongated. Processing these powders with different morphology produced dense materials with very different ionic conducting properties and different nanoscale microstructures. Since both particles are very fine and well dispersed, sintered bodies with high density (relative density >95% of theoretical) could be prepared using both types of powder particles. The electrical conductivity of sintered bodies prepared from these powders with different starting morphologies was very different. Materials prepared from particles having a round shape were much higher than those produced using powders with an elongated morphology. Measured activation energies of the corresponding sintered samples showed a similar trend; round particles (60 kJ/mol), elongated particles (74 kJ/mol). While X-ray diffraction (XRD) profiles of these sintered materials were identical, diffuse scatter was observed in the back.-round of selected area electron diffraction pattern recorded from both sintered bodies. This indicated an underlying structure that appeared to have been influenced by the processing technology. Detailed observation using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) revealed that the size of microdomain with ordering of cations in the sintered body made from round shape particles was much smaller than that of the sintered body made from elongated particles. Accordingly, it is concluded that the morphology of doped CeO2 powders strongly influenced the microdomain size and electrolytic properties in the doped CeO2 sintered body. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Calcium Phosphate ceramic has been widely used in bone tissue engineering due to its excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, low mechanical properties and biodegradability limit their potential applications. In this project, hydroxyapatite (HA) and calcium phosphate bioglass were used to produce porous tri-calcium phosphate (TCP) bio-ceramic scaffolds. It was found that porous TCP bioceramic could be obtained when 20wt percent bioglass addition and sintered in 1400 degrees celsius for 3 h. Significantly higher compressive strength (9.98 MPa) was achieved in the scaffolds as compared to those produced from tCP power (<3 MPa). The biocompatibility of the scaffold was also estimated.

Porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has been regarded as a potential candidate for bone substitute as its high mechanical strength. However, porous YSZ bodies are biologically inert to bone tissue. It is therefore necessary to introduce bioactive coatings onto the walls of the porous structures to enhance the bioactivity. In this study, the porous zirconia scaffolds were prepared by infiltration of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) scaffolds with 3 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia slurry. After sintering, a method of sol-gel dip coating was involved to make coating layer of mesoporous bioglass (MBGs). The porous zirconia without the coating had high porosities of 60.1% to 63.8%, and most macropores were interconnected with pore sizes of 0.5-0.8mm. The porous zirconia had compressive strengths of 9.07-9.90MPa. Moreover, the average coating thickness was about 7μm. There is no significant change of compressive strength for the porous zirconia with mesoporous biogalss coating. The bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) proliferation test showed both uncoated and coated zirconia scaffolds have good biocompatibility. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs and the compositional analysis graphs demonstrated that after testing in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 7 days, the apatite formation occurred on the coating surface. Thus, porous zirconia-based ceramics were modified with bioactive coating of mesoporous bioglass for potential biomedical applications.

In this paper, laminar natural convection flow from a permeable and isothermal vertical surface placed in non-isothermal surroundings is considered. Introducing appropriate transformations into the boundary layer equations governing the flow derives non-similar boundary layer equations. Results of both the analytical and numerical solutions are then presented in the form of skin-friction and Nusselt number. Numerical solutions of the transformed non-similar boundary layer equations are obtained by three distinct solution methods, (i) the perturbation solutions for small (ii) the asymptotic solution for large (iii) the implicit finite difference method for all where is the transpiration parameter. Perturbation solutions for small and large values of are compared with the finite difference solutions for different values of pertinent parameters, namely, the Prandtl number Pr, and the ambient temperature gradient n.

Calcium Phosphate ceramics have been widely used in tissue engineering due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. In the physiological environment, they are able to gradually degrade, absorbed and promote bone growth. Ultimately, they are capable of replacing damaged bone with new tissue. However, their low mechanical properties limit calcium phosphate ceramics in load-bearing applications. To obtain sufficient mechanical properties as well as high biocompatibility is one of the main focuses in biomaterials research. Therefore, the current project focuses on the preparation and characterization of porous tri-calcium phosphate (TCP) ceramic scaffolds. Hydroxapatite (HA) was used as the raw material, and normal calcium phosphate bioglass was added to adjust the ratio between calcium and phosphate. It was found that when 20% bioglass was added to HA and sintered at 1400oC for 3 hours, the TCP scaffold was obtained and this was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Test results have shown that by applying this method, TCP scaffolds have significantly higher compressive strength (9.98MPa) than those made via TCP powder (<3MPa). Moreover, in order to further increase the compressive strength of TCP scaffolds, the samples were then coated with bioglass. For normal bioglass coated TCP scaffold, compressive strength was 16.69±0.5MPa; the compressive strength for single layer mesoporous bioglass coated scaffolds was 15.03±0.63MPa. In addition, this project has also concentrated on sizes and shapes effects; it was found that the cylinder scaffolds have more mechanical property than the club ones. In addition, this project performed cell culture within scaffold to assess biocompatibility. The cells were well distributed in the scaffold, and the cytotoxicity test was performed by 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo(-z-y1)-3,5-di- phenytetrazoliumromide (MTT) assay. The Alkaline Phosphatase (Alp) activity of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell system (hBMSCs) seeded on scaffold expressed higher in vitro than that in the positive control groups in osteogenic medium, which indicated that the scaffolds were both osteoconductive and osteoinductive, showing potential value in bone tissue engineering.

Damaged articulating joints can be repaired or replaced with synthetic biomaterials, which can release wear debris due to articulation, leading to the osteolysis. In a recent work, it has been shown that it is possible to achieve a better combination of flexural strength/fracture toughness as well as in vitro bioactivity and cytocompatibility properties in spark plasma sintered hydroxyapatite-titanium (HA-Ti) composites. Although hydroxyapatite and titanium are well documented for their good biocompatibility, nanosized hydroxyapatite (HA) and titanium (Ti) particles can cause severe toxicity to cells. In order to address this issue, fretting wear study of HA-Ti composites under dry and wet (1x SBF, supplemented with 5 g l(-1) bovine serum albumin (BSA)) condition was performed to assess the wear resistance as well as wear debris formation, in vitro. The experimental results reveal one order of magnitude lower wear rate for HA-10 wt% Ti (7.5 x 10(-5) mm(3) N-1 m(-1)) composite than monolithic HA (3.9 x 10(-4) mm(3) N-1 m(-1)) in simulated body fluid. The difference in the tribological properties has been analyzed in the light of phase assemblages and mechanical properties. Overall, the results suggest the potential use of HA-Ti composites over existing HA-based biocomposites in orthopedic as well as dental applications.

The growing threats due to increased use of small-caliber armor piercing projectiles demand the development of new light-weight body armor materials. In this context, TiB2 appears to be a promising ceramic material. However, poor sinterability and low fracture toughness remain two major issues for TiB2. In order to address these issues together, Ti as a sinter-aid is used to develop TiB2-(x wt pct Ti), (x = 10, 20) homogeneous composites and a bi-layered composite (BLC) with each layer having Ti content of 10 and 20 wt pct. The present study uniquely demonstrates the efficacy of two-stage spark plasma sintering route to develop dense TiB2-Ti composites with an excellent combination of nanoscale hardness (similar to 36 GPa) and indentation fracture toughness (similar to 12 MPa m(1/2)). In case of BLC, these properties are not compromised w.r.t. homogeneous composites, suggesting the retention of baseline material properties even in the bi-layer design due to optimal relief of residual stresses. The better indentation toughness of TiB2-(10 wt pct Ti) and TiB2-(20 wt pct Ti) composites can be attributed to the observed crack deflection/arrest, indicating better damage tolerance. Transmission electron microscope investigation reveals the presence of dense dislocation networks and deformation twins in alpha-Ti at the grain boundaries and triple pockets, surrounded by TiB2 grains. The dynamic strength of around 4 GPa has been measured using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar tests in a reproducible manner at strain rates of the order of 600 s(-1). The damage progression under high strain rate has been investigated by acquiring real time images for the entire test duration using ultra-high speed imaging. An attempt has been made to establish microstructure-property correlation and a simple analysis based on Mohr-Coulomb theory is used to rationalize the measured strength properties.
