The objective of this paper is to provide and verify simplified models that predict the longitudinal stresses that develop in C-section purlins in uplift. The paper begins with the simple case of flexural stress: where the force has to be applied at the shear center, or the section braced in both flanges. Restrictions on load application point and restraint of the flanges are removed until arriving at the more complex problem of bending when movement of the tension flange alone is restricted, as commonly found in purlin-sheeting systems. Winter`s model for predicting the longitudinal stresses developed due to direct torsion is reviewed, verified, and then extended to cover the case of a bending member with tension flange restraint. The developed longitudinal stresses from flexure and restrained torsion are used to assess the elastic stability behavior of typical purlin-sheeting systems. Finally, strength predictions of typical C-section purlins are provided for existing AISI methods and a newly proposed extension to the direct strength method that employs the predicted longitudinal stress distributions within the strength prediction. Increased demands on the capacity of the railway network gave rise to new issues related to the dynamic response of railway tracks subjected to moving vehicles. Thus, it becomes important to evaluate the applicability of traditionally used simplified models which have a closed form solution. Regarding simplified models, transversal vibrations of a beam on a visco-elastic foundation subjected to a moving load are considered. Governing equations are obtained by Hamilton’s principle. Shear distortion, rotary inertia and effect of axial force are accounted for. The load is introduced as a time varying force moving at a constant velocity. Transversal vibrations induced by the load are solved by the normal-mode analysis. Reflected waves at the extremities of the full beam are avoided by introduction of semi-infinite elements. Firstly, the critical velocity obtained from this model is compared with results of an undamped Euler- Bernoulli formulation with zero axial force. Secondly, a finite element model in ABAQUS is examined. The results of searches for supersymmetry by the CMS experiment are interpreted in the framework of simplified models. The results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.73 to 4.98 fb-1. The data were collected at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. This paper describes the method of interpretation and provides upper limits on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction as a function of new particle masses for a number of simplified models. These limits and the corresponding experimental acceptance calculations can be used to constrain other theoretical models and to compare different supersymmetry-inspired analyses. © 2013 CERN.

Shockley diode equation is basic for single diode model equation, which is overly used for characterizing the photovoltaic cell output and behavior. In the standard equation, it includes series resistance (Rs) and shunt resistance (Rsh) with different types of parameters. Maximum simulation and modeling work done previously, related to single diode photovoltaic cell used this equation. However, there is another form of the standard equation which has not included Series Resistance (Rs) and Shunt Resistance (Rsh) yet, as the Shunt Resistance is much bigger than the load resistance and the load resistance is much bigger than the Series Resistance. For this phenomena, very small power loss occurs within a photovoltaic cell. This research focuses on the comparison of two forms of basic Shockley diode equation. This analysis describes a deep understanding of the photovoltaic cell, as well as gives understanding about Series Resistance (Rs) and Shunt Resistance (Rsh) behavior in the Photovoltaic cell. For making estimation of a real time photovoltaic system, faster calculation is needed. The equation without Series Resistance and Shunt Resistance is appropriate for the real time environment. Error function for both Series resistance (Rs) and Shunt resistances (Rsh) have been analyzed which shows that the total system is not affected by this two parameters' behavior.

We investigate the internal dynamics of two cellular automaton models with heterogeneous strength fields and differing nearest neighbour laws. One model is a crack-like automaton, transferring ail stress from a rupture zone to the surroundings. The other automaton is a partial stress drop automaton, transferring only a fraction of the stress within a rupture zone to the surroundings. To study evolution of stress, the mean spectral density. f(k(r)) of a stress deficit held is: examined prior to, and immediately following ruptures in both models. Both models display a power-law relationship between f(k(r)) and spatial wavenumber (k(r)) of the form f(k(r)) similar tok(r)(-beta). In the crack model, the evolution of stress deficit is consistent with cyclic approach to, and retreat from a critical state in which large events occur. The approach to criticality is driven by tectonic loading. Short-range stress transfer in the model does not affect the approach to criticality of broad regions in the model. The evolution of stress deficit in the partial stress drop model is consistent with small fluctuations about a mean state of high stress, behaviour indicative of a self-organised critical system. Despite statistics similar to natural earthquakes these simplified models lack a physical basis. physically motivated models of earthquakes also display dynamical complexity similar to that of a critical point system. Studies of dynamical complexity in physical models of earthquakes may lead to advancement towards a physical theory for earthquakes.

Increased rotational speed brings many advantages to an electric motor. One of the benefits is that when the desired power is generated at increased rotational speed, the torque demanded from the rotor decreases linearly, and as a consequence, a motor of smaller size can be used. Using a rotor with high rotational speed in a system with mechanical bearings can, however, create undesirable vibrations, and therefore active magnetic bearings (AMBs) are often considered a good option for the main bearings, as the rotor then has no mechanical contact with other parts of the system but levitates on the magnetic forces. On the other hand, such systems can experience overloading or a sudden shutdown of the electrical system, whereupon the magnetic field becomes extinct, and as a result of rotor delevitation, mechanical contact occurs. To manage such nonstandard operations, AMB-systems require mechanical touchdown bearings with an oversized bore diameter. The need for touchdown bearings seems to be one of the barriers preventing greater adoption of AMB technology, because in the event of an uncontrolled touchdown, failure may occur, for example, in the bearing’s cage or balls, or in the rotor. This dissertation consists of two parts: First, touchdown bearing misalignment in the contact event is studied. It is found that misalignment increases the likelihood of a potentially damaging whirling motion of the rotor. A model for analysis of the stresses occurring in the rotor is proposed. In the studies of misalignment and stresses, a flexible rotor using a finite element approach is applied. Simplified models of cageless and caged bearings are used for the description of touchdown bearings. The results indicate that an increase in misalignment can have a direct influence on the bending and shear stresses occurring in the rotor during the contact event. Thus, it was concluded that analysis of stresses arising in the contact event is essential to guarantee appropriate system dimensioning for possible contact events with misaligned touchdown bearings. One of the conclusions drawn from the first part of the study is that knowledge of the forces affecting the balls and cage of the touchdown bearings can enable a more reliable estimation of the service life of the bearing. Therefore, the second part of the dissertation investigates the forces occurring in the cage and balls of touchdown bearings and introduces two detailed models of touchdown bearings in which all bearing parts are modelled as independent bodies. Two multibody-based two-dimensional models of touchdown bearings are introduced for dynamic analysis of the contact event. All parts of the bearings are modelled with geometrical surfaces, and the bodies interact with each other through elastic contact forces. To assist in identification of the forces affecting the balls and cage in the contact event, the first model describes a touchdown bearing without a cage, and the second model describes a touchdown bearing with a cage. The introduced models are compared with the simplified models used in the first part of the dissertation through parametric study. Damages to the rotor, cage and balls are some of the main reasons for failures of AMB-systems. The stresses in the rotor in the contact event are defined in this work. Furthermore, the forces affecting key bodies of the bearings, cage and balls can be studied using the models of touchdown bearings introduced in this dissertation. Knowledge obtained from the introduced models is valuable since it can enable an optimum structure for a rotor and touchdown bearings to be designed.

In the field of vehicle dynamics, commercial software can aid the designer during the conceptual and detailed design phases. Simulations using these tools can quickly provide specific design metrics, such as yaw and lateral velocity, for standard maneuvers. However, it remains challenging to correlate these metrics with empirical quantities that depend on many external parameters and design specifications. This scenario is the case with tire wear, which depends on the frictional work developed by the tire-road contact. In this study, an approach is proposed to estimate the tire-road friction during steady-state longitudinal and cornering maneuvers. Using this approach, a qualitative formula for tire wear evaluation is developed, and conceptual design analyses of cornering maneuvers are performed using simplified vehicle models. The influence of some design parameters such as cornering stiffness, the distance between the axles, and the steer angle ratio between the steering axles for vehicles with two steering axles is evaluated. The proposed methodology allows the designer to predict tire wear using simplified vehicle models during the conceptual design phase.

Routes of migration and exchange are important factors in the debate about how the Neolithic transition spread into Europe. Studying the genetic diversity of livestock can help in tracing back some of these past events. Notably, domestic goat (Capra hircus) did not have any wild progenitors (Capra aegagrus) in Europe before their arrival from the Near East. Studies of mitochondrial DNA have shown that the diversity in European domesticated goats is a subset of that in the wild, underlining the ancestral relationship between both populations. Additionally, an ancient DNA study on Neolithic goat remains has indicated that a high level of genetic diversity was already present early in the Neolithic in northwestern Mediterranean sites. We used coalescent simulations and approximate Bayesian computation, conditioned on patterns of modern and ancient mitochondrial DNA diversity in domesticated and wild goats, to test a series of simplified models of the goat domestication process. Specifically, we ask if domestic goats descend from populations that were distinct prior to domestication. Although the models we present require further analyses, preliminary results indicate that wild and domestic goats are more likely to descend from a single ancestral wild population that was managed 11,500 years before present, and that serial founding events characterise the spread of Capra hircus into Europe.

In this work an iterative strategy is developed to tackle the problem of coupling dimensionally-heterogeneous models in the context of fluid mechanics. The procedure proposed here makes use of a reinterpretation of the original problem as a nonlinear interface problem for which classical nonlinear solvers can be applied. Strong coupling of the partitions is achieved while dealing with different codes for each partition, each code in black-box mode. The main application for which this procedure is envisaged arises when modeling hydraulic networks in which complex and simple subsystems are treated using detailed and simplified models, correspondingly. The potentialities and the performance of the strategy are assessed through several examples involving transient flows and complex network configurations.

The arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is characterized by enhanced blood flow and is the most widely used vascular access for chronic haemodialysis (Sivanesan et al., 1998). A large proportion of the AVF late failures are related to local haemodynamics (Sivanesan et al., 1999a). As in AVF, blood flow dynamics plays an important role in growth, rupture, and surgical treatment of aneurysm. Several techniques have been used to study the flow patterns in simplified models of vascular anastomose and aneurysm. In the present investigation, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to analyze the flow patterns in AVF and aneurysm through the velocity waveform obtained from experimental surgeries in dogs (Galego et al., 2000), as well as intra-operative blood flow recordings of patients with radiocephalic AVF ( Sivanesan et al., 1999b) and physiological pulses (Aires, 1991), respectively. The flow patterns in AVF for dog and patient surgeries data are qualitatively similar. Perturbation, recirculation and separation zones appeared during cardiac cycle, and these were intensified in the diastole phase for the AVF and aneurysm models. The values of wall shear stress presented in this investigation of AVF and aneurysm models oscillated in the range that can both cause damage to endothelial cells and develop atherosclerosis.

Numa Estação de Tratamento de Águas Residuais (ETAR), são elevados os custos não só de tratamento das águas residuais como também de manutenção dos equipamentos lá existentes, nesse sentido procura-se utilizar processos capazes de transformar os resíduos em produtos úteis. A Digestão Anaeróbia (DA) é um processo atualmente disponível capaz de contribuir para a redução da poluição ambiental e ao mesmo tempo de valorizar os subprodutos gerados. Durante o processo de DA é produzido um gás, o biogás, que pode ser utilizado como fonte de energia, reduzindo assim a dependência energética da ETAR e a emissão de gases com efeito de estufa para a atmosfera. A otimização do processo de DA das lamas é essencial para o aumento da produção de biogás, mas a complexidade do processo constitui um obstáculo à sua otimização. Neste trabalho, aplicaram-se Redes Neuronais Artificiais (RNA) ao processo de DA de lamas de ETAR. RNA são modelos simplificados inspirados no funcionamento das células neuronais humanas e que adquirem conhecimento através da experiência. Quando a RNA é criada e treinada, produz valores de output aproximadamente corretos para os inputs fornecidos. Foi esse o motivo para recorrer a RNA na otimização da produção de biogás no digestor I da ETAR Norte da SIMRIA, usando o programa NeuralToolsTM da PalisadeTM para desenvolvimento das RNA. Para tal, efetuou-se uma análise e tratamento de dados referentes aos últimos quatro anos de funcionamento do digestor. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que as RNA modeladas apresentam boa capacidade de generalização do processo de DA. Considera-se que este caso de estudo é promissor, fornecendo uma boa base para o desenvolvimento de modelos eventualmente mais gerais de RNA que, aplicado conjuntamente com as características de funcionamento de um digestor e o processo de DA, permitirá otimizar a produção de biogás em ETAR.

Este trabalho insere-se no âmbito de um estágio curricular realizado no gabinete de projetos SE2P, durante o qual foram desenvolvidas ferramentas de cálculo estrutural em situação de incêndio, integradas numa metodologia de trabalho que segue os princípios inerentes à tecnologia BIM (Building Information Modeling). Em particular foi implementado um procedimento de análise ao fogo segundo os modelos simplificados prescritos pelos Eurocódigos. Estes modelos garantem a segurança estrutural, permitindo, de forma rápida e eficiente, a determinação das necessidades de proteção passiva para diferentes cenários, tendo em vista a obtenção da solução mais económica. Esta dissertação, para além da apresentação do trabalho desenvolvido em regime de estágio curricular, objetivou dotar o leitor de um documento que introduza os principais conceitos relativos ao cálculo estrutural em situação de incêndio, indicando as várias opções de análise e respetivas vantagens e desvantagens, ajudando a definir a sua adequabilidade ao projeto em estudo. Neste contexto é efetuada uma introdução geral ao fenómeno do fogo e às medidas mais correntes de proteção, indicando-se os documentos normativos aplicáveis tanto ao cálculo estrutural como aos materiais de proteção. É também abordada a interação entre as várias normas que devem ser consultadas quando é efetuada uma análise ao fogo, e quais se aplicam a cada fase da análise. Efetua-se uma clara distinção entre a análise do comportamento térmico e mecânico, indicando-se as principais propriedades dos materiais em função do tipo de análise e a forma como são afetadas pela temperatura. No campo da análise do comportamento térmico faz-se essencialmente referência aos modelos de cálculo simplificados do desenvolvimento da temperatura em elementos metálicos e vigas mistas, com e sem proteção passiva. No que concerne ao campo da análise do comportamento mecânico são descritos os modelos de cálculo simplificados para a verificação da segurança estrutural atendendo às ações e combinações em situação de incêndio e à perda de resistência a temperaturas elevadas. Relativamente ao trabalho desenvolvido na SE2P, relativo ao desenvolvimento de ferramentas de cálculo e a sua implementação na análise ao fogo, realiza-se uma descrição detalhada de todo o processo, e da forma como se integra no conceito BIM, utilizando informações provenientes da modelação das estruturas e introduzindo novos dados ao modelo. Realizou-se também a aplicação de todo o procedimento de análise e das ferramentas desenvolvidas, a um caso de estudo baseado num edifício de habitação. Este caso de estudo serviu também para criar cenários de otimização utilizando-se referências de preços de mercado para o aço, sua transformação em fábrica e sistemas de proteção passiva, demonstrando-se a dificuldade em encontrar caminhos rápidos e diretos de decisão no processo de otimização.

Numa sociedade com elevado consumo energético, a dependência de combustíveis fósseis em evidente diminuição de disponibilidades é um tema cada vez mais preocupante, assim como a poluição atmosférica resultante da sua utilização. Existe, portanto, uma necessidade crescente de recorrer a energias renováveis e promover a otimização e utilização de recursos. A digestão anaeróbia (DA) de lamas é um processo de estabilização de lamas utilizado nas Estações de Tratamento de Águas Residuais (ETAR) e tem, como produtos finais, a lama digerida e o biogás. Maioritariamente constituído por gás metano, o biogás pode ser utilizado como fonte de energia, reduzindo, deste modo, a dependência energética da ETAR e a emissão de gases com efeito de estufa para a atmosfera. A otimização do processo de DA das lamas é essencial para o aumento da produção de biogás. No presente relatório de estágio, as Redes Neuronais Artificiais (RNA) foram aplicadas ao processo de DA de lamas de ETAR. As RNA são modelos simplificados inspirados no funcionamento das células neuronais humanas e que adquirem conhecimento através da experiência. Quando a RNA é criada e treinada, produz valores de output aproximadamente corretos para os inputs fornecidos. Uma vez que as DA são um processo bastante complexo, a sua otimização apresenta diversas dificuldades. Foi esse o motivo para recorrer a RNA na otimização da produção de biogás nos digestores das ETAR de Espinho e de Ílhavo da AdCL, utilizando o software NeuralToolsTM da PalisadeTM, contribuindo, desta forma, para a compreensão do processo e do impacto de algumas variáveis na produção de biogás.

This article presents an experimental and numerical study for the mechanical characterization under uniaxial compressive loading of the adobe masonry of one of the most emblematic archaeological complex in Peru, 'Huaca de la Luna' (100-650AD). Compression tests of prisms were carried out with original material brought to the laboratory. For measuring local deformations in the tests, displacement transducers were used which were complemented by a digital image correlation system which allowed a better understanding of the failure mechanism. The tests were then numerically simulated by modelling the masonry as a continuum media. Several approaches were considered concerning the geometrical modelling, namely 2D and 3D simplified models, and 3D refined models based on a photogrammetric reconstruction. The results showed a good approximation between the numerical prediction and the experimental response in all cases. However, the 3D models with irregular geometries seem to reproduce better the cracking pattern observed in the tests.

The structural analysis involves the definition of the model and selection of the analysis type. The model should represent the stiffness, the mass and the loads of the structure. The structures can be represented using simplified models, such as the lumped mass models, and advanced models resorting the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM). Depending on the characteristics of the structure, different types of analysis can be used such as limit analysis, linear and non-linear static analysis and linear and non-linear dynamic analysis. Unreinforced masonry structures present low tensile strength and the linear analyses seem to not be adequate for assessing their structural behaviour. On the other hand, the static and dynamic non-linear analyses are complex, since they involve large time computational requirements and advanced knowledge of the practitioner. The non-linear analysis requires advanced knowledge on the material properties, analysis tools and interpretation of results. The limit analysis with macro-blocks can be assumed as a more practical method in the estimation of maximum load capacity of structure. Furthermore, the limit analysis require a reduced number of parameters, which is an advantage for the assessment of ancient and historical masonry structures, due to the difficult in obtaining reliable data.
