The interdiffusion coefficient in Ni(Mo) solid solution, impurity diffusion of Mo in Ni, average interdiffusion coefficient of the NiMo-sigma phase and activation energies for diffusion in solid solution and in the sigma phase of the Ni-Mo binary system are evaluated through the diffusion couple approach. These results are utilized to identify the possible diffusion mechanism. Low activation energy in the sigma phase indicates a grain-boundary-controlled diffusion process.

The precipitation behaviour of a nickel free stainless steel containing 25% chromium, 17% manganese and 0.54% nitrogen, with duplex ferritic-austenitic microstructure, was studied using several complementary techniques of microstructural analysis after aging heat treatments between 600 and 1 000 degrees C for periods of lime between 15 and 6 000 min. During aging heat treatments, ferrite was decomposed into sigma phase and austenite by a eutectoid reaction, like in the Fe-Cr-Ni duplex stainless steel. Chromium nitride precipitation occurred in austenite, which had a high nitrogen supersaturation. Some peculiar aspects were observed in this austenite during its phase transformations. Chromium nitride precipitation occurred discontinuously in a lamellar morphology, such as pearlite in carbon steels. This kind of precipitation is not an ordinary observation in duplex stainless steels and the high levels of nitrogen in austenite can induce this type of precipitation, which has not been previously reported in duplex stainless steels. After chromium nitride precipitation in austenite, it was also observed sigma phase formation near the cells or colonies of discontinuously precipitated chromium nitride. Sigma phase formation was made possible by the depletion of nitrogen in those regions. Time-temperature-transformation (precipitation) diagrams were determined.

For a feedback system consisting of a transfer function $G(s)$ in the forward path and a time-varying gain $n(t)(0 \leqq n(t) \leqq k)$ in the feedback loop, a stability multiplier $Z(s)$ has been constructed (and used to prove stability) by Freedman [2] such that $Z(s)(G(s) + {1 / K})$ and $Z(s - \sigma )(0 < \sigma < \sigma _ * )$ are strictly positive real, where $\sigma _ * $ can be computed from a knowledge of the phase-angle characteristic of $G(i\omega ) + {1 / k}$ and the time-varying gain $n(t)$ is restricted by $\sigma _ * $ by means of an integral inequality. In this note it is shown that an improved value for $\sigma _ * $ is possible by making some modifications in his derivation. ©1973 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

This paper presents a direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDFS) with a 16-bit accumulator, a fourth-order phase domain single-stage Delta Sigma interpolator, and a 300-MS/s 12-bit current-steering DAC based on the Q(2) Random Walk switching scheme. The Delta Sigma interpolator is used to reduce the phase truncation error and the ROM size. The implemented fourth-order single-stage Delta Sigma noise shaper reduces the effective phase bits by four and reduces the ROM size by 16 times. The DDFS prototype is fabricated in a 0.35-mu m CMOS technology with active area of 1.11 mm(2) including a 12-bit DAC. The measured DDFS spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is greater than 78 dB using a reduced ROM with 8-bit phase, 12-bit amplitude resolution and a size of 0.09 mm(2). The total power consumption of the DDFS is 200)mW with a 3.3-V power supply.

Alternative RNA polymerase sigma factors are a common means of coordinating gene regulation in bacteria. Using PCR amplification with degenerate primers, we identified and cloned a sigma factor gene, sigF, from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The deduced protein encoded by sigF shows significant similarity to SigF sporulation sigma factors from Streptomyces coelicolor and Bacillus subtilis and to SigB, a stress-response sigma factor, from B. subtilis. Southern blot surveys with a sigF-specific probe identified cross-hybridizing bands in other slow-growing mycobacteria, Mycobacterium bovis bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and Mycobacterium avium, but not in the rapid-growers Mycobacterium smegmatis or Mycobacterium abscessus. RNase protection assays revealed that M. tuberculosis sigF mRNA is not present during exponential-phase growth in M. bovis BCG cultures but is strongly induced during stationary phase, nitrogen depletion, and cold shock. Weak expression of M. tuberculosis sigF was also detected during late-exponential phase, oxidative stress, anaerobiasis, and alcohol shock. The specific expression of M. tuberculosis sigF during stress or stationary phase suggests that it may play a role in the ability of tubercle bacilli to adapt to host defenses and persist during human infection.

Neutral NCN is made in a mass spectrometer by charge stripping of NCN-., while neutral dicyanocarbene NCCCN can be formed by neutralization of either the corresponding anionic and cationic species, NCCCN-. and NCCCN+.. Theoretical calculations at the RCCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level of theory indicate that the (3)Sigma (-)(g) State of NCCCN is 18 kcal mol(-1) more stable than the (1)A(1) state. While the majority of neutrals formed from either NCCCN-. or NCCCN+. correspond to NCCCN, a proportion of the neutral NCCCN molecules have sufficient excess energy to effect rearrangement, as evidenced by a loss of atomic carbon in the neutralization reionization (NR) spectra of either NCCCN+. and NCCCN-.. C-13 labeling studies indicate that loss of carbon occurs statistically following or accompanied by scrambling of all three carbon atoms. A theoretical study at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d)//B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level of theory indicates that C loss is a consequence of the rearrangement sequence NCCCN --> CNCCN --> CNCNC and that C scrambling occurs within singlet CNCCN via the intermediacy of a four-membered C-2v-symmetrical transition structure.

The Dps (DNA-binding protein from starved cells) proteins from Mycobacterium smegmatis MsDps1 and MsDps2 are both DNA-binding proteins with some differences. While MsDps1 has two oligomeric states, with one of them responsible for DNA binding, MsDps2 has only one DNA-binding oligomeric state. Both the proteins however, show iron-binding activity. The MsDps1 protein has been shown previously to be induced under conditions of starvation and osmotic stress and is regulated by the extra cellular sigma factors sigma(H) and sigma(F). We show here, that the second Dps homologue in M. smegmatis, namely MsDps2, is purified in a DNA-bound form and exhibits nucleoid-like structures under the atomic force microscope. It appears that the N-terminal sequence of Dps2 plays a role in nucleoid formation. MsDps2, unlike MsDps1, does not show elevated expression in nutritionally starved or stationary phase conditions; rather its promoter is recognized by RNA polymerase containing sigma(A) or sigma(B), under in vitro conditions. We propose that due to the nucleoid-condensing ability, the expression of MsDps2 is tightly regulated inside the cells.

We construct a driven sandpile slope model and study it by numerical simulations in one dimension. The model is specified by a threshold slope sigma(c), a parameter alpha, governing the local current-slope relation (beyond threshold), and j(in), the mean input current of sand. A non-equilibrium phase diagram is obtained in the alpha-j(in) plane. We find an infinity of phases, characterized by different mean slopes and separated by continuous or first-order boundaries, some of which we obtain analytically. Extensions to two dimensions are discussed.z

Lead Telluride (PbTe) with bismuth secondary phase embedded in the bulk has been prepared by matrix encapsulation technique. X-Ray Diffraction results indicated crystalline PbTe, while Rietveld analysis showed that Bi did not substitute at either Pb or Te site, which was further confirmed by Raman and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Scanning Electron Microscopy showed the expected presence of a secondary phase, while Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy results showed a slight deficiency of tellurium in the PbTe matrix, which might have occurred during synthesis due to higher vapor pressure of Te. Transmission Electron Microscopy results did not show any nanometer sized Bi phase. Seebeck coefficient (S) and electrical conductivity (sigma) were measured from room temperature to 725 K. A decrease in S and sigma with increasing Bi content showed an increased scattering of electrons from PbTe-Bi interfaces, along with a possible electron acceptor role of Bi secondary phase. An overall decrease in the power factor was thus observed. Thermal conductivity, measured from 400K to 725K, was smaller at starting temperature with increasing Bi concentration, and almost comparable to that of PbTe at higher temperatures, indicating a more important role of electrons as compared to phonons at PbTe-Bi interfaces. Still, a reasonable zT of 0.8 at 725K was achieved for undoped PbTe, but no improvement was found for bismuth added samples with micrometer inclusions. The association of a factors with the RNA polymerase dictates the expression profile of a bacterial cell. Major changes to the transcription profile are achieved by the use of multiple sigma factors that confer distinct promoter selectivity to the holoenzyme. The cellular concentration of a sigma factor is regulated by diverse mechanisms involving transcription, translation and post-translational events. The number of sigma factors varies substantially across bacteria. The diversity in the interactions between sigma factors also vary-ranging from collaboration, competition or partial redundancy in some cellular or environmental contexts. These interactions can be rationalized by a mechanistic model referred to as the partitioning of a space model of bacterial transcription. The structural similarity between different sigma/anti-sigma complexes despite poor sequence conservation and cellular localization reveals an elegant route to incorporate diverse regulatory mechanisms within a structurally conserved scaffold. These features are described here with a focus on sigma/anti-sigma complexes from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In particular, we discuss recent data on the conditional regulation of sigma/anti-sigma factor interactions. Specific stages of M. tuberculosis infection, such as the latent phase, as well as the remarkable adaptability of this pathogen to diverse environmental conditions can be rationalized by the synchronized action of different a factors.
