This dissertation studies the manipulation of particles using acoustic stimulation for applications in microfluidics and templating of devices. The term particle is used here to denote any solid, liquid or gaseous material that has properties, which are distinct from the fluid in which it is suspended. Manipulation means to take over the movements of the particles and to position them in specified locations. Using devices, microfabricated out of silicon, the behavior of particles under the acoustic stimulation was studied with the main purpose of aligning the particles at either low-pressure zones, known as the nodes or high-pressure zones, known as anti-nodes. By aligning particles at the nodes in a flow system, these particles can be focused at the center or walls of a microchannel in order to ultimately separate them. These separations are of high scientific importance, especially in the biomedical domain, since acoustopheresis provides a unique approach to separate based on density and compressibility, unparalleled by other techniques. The study of controlling and aligning the particles in various geometries and configurations was successfully achieved by controlling the acoustic waves. Apart from their use in flow systems, a stationary suspended-particle device was developed to provide controllable light transmittance based on acoustic stimuli. Using a glass compartment and a carbon-particle suspension in an organic solvent, the device responded to acoustic stimulation by aligning the particles. The alignment of light-absorbing carbon particles afforded an increase in visible light transmittance as high as 84.5%, and it was controlled by adjusting the frequency and amplitude of the acoustic wave. The device also demonstrated alignment memory rendering it energy-efficient. A similar device for suspended-particles in a monomer enabled the development of electrically conductive films. These films were based on networks of conductive particles. Elastomers doped with conductive metal particles were rendered surface conductive at particle loadings as low as 1% by weight using acoustic focusing. The resulting films were flexible and had transparencies exceeding 80% in the visible spectrum (400-800 nm) These films had electrical bulk conductivities exceeding 50 S/cm.

CONSPECTUS: Two-dimensional (2D) crystals derived from transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are intriguing materials that offer a unique platform to study fundamental physical phenomena as well as to explore development of novel devices. Semiconducting group 6 TMDs such as MoS2 and WSe2 are known for their large optical absorption coefficient and their potential for high efficiency photovoltaics and photodetectors. Monolayer sheets of these compounds are flexible, stretchable, and soft semiconductors with a direct band gap in contrast to their well-known bulk crystals that are rigid and hard indirect gap semiconductors. Recent intense research has been motivated by the distinct electrical, optical, and mechanical properties of these TMD crystals in the ultimate thickness regime. As a semiconductor with a band gap in the visible to near-IR frequencies, these 2D MX2 materials (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se) exhibit distinct excitonic absorption and emission features. In this Account, we discuss how optical spectroscopy of these materials allows investigation of their electronic properties and the relaxation dynamics of excitons. We first discuss the basic electronic structure of 2D TMDs highlighting the key features of the dispersion relation. With the help of theoretical calculations, we further discuss how photoluminescence energy of direct and indirect excitons provide a guide to understanding the evolution of the electronic structure as a function of the number of layers. We also highlight the behavior of the two competing conduction valleys and their role in the optical processes. Intercalation of group 6 TMDs by alkali metals results in the structural phase transformation with corresponding semiconductor-to-metal transition. Monolayer TMDs obtained by intercalation-assisted exfoliation retains the metastable metallic phase. Mild annealing, however, destabilizes the metastable phase and gradually restores the original semiconducting phase. Interestingly, the semiconducting 2H phase, metallic 1T phase, and a charge-density-wave-like 1T' phase can coexist within a single crystalline monolayer sheet. We further discuss the electronic properties of the restacked films of chemically exfoliated MoS2. Finally, we focus on the strong optical absorption and related exciton relaxation in monolayer and bilayer MX2. Monolayer MX2 absorbs as much as 30% of incident photons in the blue region of the visible light despite being atomically thin. This giant absorption is attributed to nesting of the conduction and valence bands, which leads to diversion of optical conductivity. We describe how the relaxation pathway of excitons depends strongly on the excitation energy. Excitation at the band nesting region is of unique significance because it leads to relaxation of electrons and holes with opposite momentum and spontaneous formation of indirect excitons.

CdTe and Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin film solar cells are fabricated, electrically characterized and modelled in this thesis. We start from the fabrication of CdTe thin film devices where the R.F. magnetron sputtering system is used to deposit the CdS/CdTe based solar cells. The chlorine post-growth treatment is modified in order to uniformly cover the cell surface and reduce the probability of pinholes and shunting pathways creation which, in turn, reduces the series resistance. The deionized water etching is proposed, for the first time, as the simplest solution to optimize the effect of shunt resistance, stability and metal-semiconductor inter-diffusion at the back contact. In continue, oxygen incorporation is proposed while CdTe layer deposition. This technique has been rarely examined through R.F sputtering deposition of such devices. The above experiments are characterized electrically and optically by current-voltage characterization, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy. Furthermore, for the first time, the degradation rate of CdTe devices over time is numerically simulated through AMPS and SCAPS simulators. It is proposed that the instability of electrical parameters is coupled with the material properties and external stresses (bias, temperature and illumination). Then, CIGS materials are simulated and characterized by several techniques such as surface photovoltage spectroscopy is used (as a novel idea) to extract the band gap of graded band gap CIGS layers, surface or bulk defect states. The surface roughness is scanned by atomic force microscopy on nanometre scale to obtain the surface topography of the film. The modified equivalent circuits are proposed and the band gap graded profiles are simulated by AMPS simulator and several graded profiles are examined in order to optimize their thickness, grading strength and electrical parameters. Furthermore, the transport mechanisms and Auger generation phenomenon are modelled in CIGS devices.

The substitution of cation atoms by V, Cr and It in the natural and synthetic quaternary Cu2ZnSnS4 semiconductor is analyzed using first-principles methods. In most of the substitutions, the electronic structure of these modified CZTS is characterized for intermediate bands with different occupation and position within of the energy band gap. A study of the symmetry and composition of these intermediate bands is carried out for all substitutions. These bands permit additional photon absorption and emission channels depending on their occupation. The optical properties are obtained and analyzed. The absorption coefficients are split into contributions from the different absorption channels and from the inter- and intra-atomic components. The sub bandgap transitions are significant in many cases because the anion states contribute to the valence, conduction and intermediates bands. These properties could therefore be used for novel optoelectronic devices.

The structural and optical properties of GaAsP/GaP core-shell nanowires grown by gas source molecular beam epitaxy were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), and magneto-PL. The effects of surface depletion and compositional variations in the ternary alloy manifested as a redshift in GaAsP PL upon surface passivation, and a decrease in redshift in PL in the presence of a magnetic field due to spatial confinement of carriers.

In this work we report the preparation of a new blue-emitting material based on the templated synthesis of mesoporous silica (MCM-41) using micellar solutions of the newly synthesized monocationic metallosurfactant complex bis[1-benzyl-4-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole](4,4'-diheptadecyl-2,2'- bipyridine)-iridium(III) chloride in hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB). Under ambient conditions, significant increases in excited state lifetime and quantum yield values (up to 45%), were obtained for the solid materials in comparison to the corresponding micellar solutions. Solid state (1)H and (19)F NMR spectroscopies were successfully employed for quantifying the luminophore content in terms of Ir-surfactant to CTAB and Ir-surfactant to silica ratios.

Objectives. To evaluate the influence of different tertiary amines on degree of conversion (DC), shrinkage-strain, shrinkage-strain rate, Knoop microhardness, and color and transmittance stabilities of experimental resins containing BisGMA/TEGDMA (3: 1 wt), 0.25wt% camphorquinone, 1wt% amine (DMAEMA, CEMA, DMPT, DEPT or DABE). Different light-curing protocols were also evaluated. Methods. DC was evaluated with FTIR-ATR and shrinkage-strain with the bonded-disk method. Shrinkage-strain-rate data were obtained from numerical differentiation of shrinkage-strain data with respect to time. Color stability and transmittance were evaluated after different periods of artificial aging, according to ISO 7491: 2000. Results were evaluated with ANOVA, Tukey, and Dunnett`s T3 tests (alpha = 0.05). Results. Studied properties were influenced by amines. DC and shrinkage-strain were maximum at the sequence: CQ < DEPT < DMPT <= CEMA approximate to DABE < DMAEMA. Both DC and shrinkage were also influenced by the curing protocol, with positive correlations between DC and shrinkage-strain and DC and shrinkage-strain rate. Materials generally decreased in L* and increased in b*. The strong exception was the resin containing DMAEMA that did not show dark and yellow shifts. Color varied in the sequence: DMAEMA < DEPT < DMPT < CEMA < DABE. Transmittance varied in the sequence: DEPT approximate to DABE < DABE approximate to DMPT approximate to CEMA < DMPT approximate to CEMA approximate to DMAEMA, being more evident at the wavelength of 400 nm. No correlations between DC and optical properties were observed. Significance. The resin containing DMAEMA showed higher DC, shrinkage-strain, shrinkage-strain rate, and microhardness, in addition to better optical properties. (C) 2011 Academy of Dental Materials. Thin films of TiO2 were doped with Au by ion implantation and in situ during the deposition. The films were grown by reactive magnetron sputtering and deposited in silicon and glass substrates at a temperature around 150 degrees C. The undoped films were implanted with Au fiuences in the range of 5 x 10(15) Au/cm(2)-1 x 10(17) Au/cm(2) with a energy of 150 keV. At a fluence of 5 x 10(16) Au/cm(2) the formation of Au nanoclusters in the films is observed during the implantation at room temperature. The clustering process starts to occur during the implantation where XRD estimates the presence of 3-5 nm precipitates. After annealing in a reducing atmosphere, the small precipitates coalesce into larger ones following an Ostwald ripening mechanism. In situ XRD studies reveal that Au atoms start to coalesce at 350 degrees C, reaching the precipitates dimensions larger than 40 nm at 600 degrees C. Annealing above 700 degrees C promotes drastic changes in the Au profile of in situ doped films with the formation of two Au rich regions at the interface and surface respectively. The optical properties reveal the presence of a broad band centered at 550 nm related to the plasmon resonance of gold particles visible in AFM maps. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
