The present study tests whether a self-affirmation intervention (i.e., requiring an individual to focus on a valued aspect of their self-concept, such as honesty) can increase physical activity and change theory of planned behavior (TPB) variables linked to physical activity. Eighty young people completed a longitudinal intervention study. Baseline physical activity was assessed using the Godin Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (LTPAQ). Next, participants were randomly allocated to either a self-affirmation or a nonaffirmation condition. Participants then read information about physical activity and health, and completed measures of TPB variables. One week later, participants again completed LTPAQ and TPB items. At follow up, self-affirmed participants reported significantly more physical activity, more positive attitudes toward physical activity, and higher intentions to be physically active compared with nonaffirmed participants. Neither attitudes nor intentions mediated the effects of self-affirmation on physical activity. Self-affirmation can increase levels of physical activity and TPB variables. Self-affirmation interventions have the potential to become relatively simple methods for increasing physical activity levels. © 2014 Human Kinetics, Inc.

Background: Self-affirmation (i.e., focusing on a valued aspect of the self-concept) can promote health behaviour change. This study aimed to see if self-affirmation increased physical activity (PA) regardless of threat level presented in health messages. Methods: Sixty-eight participants were randomly allocated to condition in a 2 (self-affirmation, no affirmation) x 2 (high threat, low threat) between-participants design. Participants completed the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire at baseline and one week later to assess PA. Findings: A two-way ANCOVA with affirmation condition and threat level as predictor variables, controlling for baseline PA, was performed on follow up PA. Baseline PA was a significant predictor (F(1,63) = 399.63, p<0.001) and the main effect of affirmation condition approached significance (F(1,63) = 3.55, p=0.06). There were no other significant effects. Discussion: This study provides further evidence that self-affirmation can increase PA, but found no interaction between self-affirmation and threat level presented in health messages.

Health-risk information can elicit negative emotions like anticipated regret that may positively affect health persuasion. The beneficial impact of such emotions is undermined when target audiences respond defensively to the threatening information. We tested whether self-affirming (reflecting on cherished attributes) before message exposure can be used as strategy to enhance the experience of anticipated regret. Women were self-affirmed or not before exposure to a message promoting fruit and vegetable consumption. Self-affirmation increased anticipated regret and intentions reported following message exposure and consumption in the week after the intervention; regret mediated the affirmation effect on intentions. Moreover, results suggest that anticipated regret and intentions are serial mediators linking self-affirmation and behavior. By demonstrating the mediating role of anticipated regret, we provide insights into how self-affirmation may promote healthy intentions and behavior following health message exposure. Self-affirmation techniques could thus potentially be used to increase the effectiveness of health communication efforts.

L'affirmation de soi à travers l'adoption d'un pseudonyme se présente comme une forme d'autocréation qui répond à l'acte d'écriture, en tant que forme première d'une individualité dans la langue. Le nouveau nom remplit la fonction symbolique d'invention de soi par la nomination, tout en jouant, chez certains écrivains d'Afrique noire, de l'inscription d'une autre langue au sein de l'onomastique française. Pour certains d'entre eux, l'autonomination apparaît même comme un acte de guérilla, une affirmation de soi et non une dissimulation, marquée au coin de l'onomastique africaine et d'un contexte historico-politique qui lui donne sens. Dans le cadre de cet article, à considérer comme l'esquisse d'une réflexion abordant un champ encore peu exploré, il s'agit d'envisager les divers enjeux de la nomination en Afrique noire, puis d'interroger les pratiques d'écrivains pseudonymes, tels Sony Labou Tansi, Mongo Beti et Ken Bugul, qui constituent des cas de figure particulièrement significatifs de cette pratique. Self-affirmation via the adoption of a pseudonym constitues a form of self-creation springing from the act of writing, in the guise of a primary shape given within language to an individual. The new name fulfills the symbolic function of inventing oneself through nomination while playing on - in the instance of certain black African writers - the inscription of another language within French onomastics. For one, self-naming appears as a « guerilla action », an affirmation of self and not its dissimulation, marked on the edges by African onomastics and an historico-political context that gives the meaning. In this article, offered as an outline of an approch to an little-explored field of investigation, we seek to identify the various stakes related to naming in black Africa, before examining specific techniques demonstrated by pseudonymous writers such as Sony Labou Tansi, Mongo Beti, and Ken Bugul, taken as exemplary and particulary significant in this domain.

Ma thèse porte sur les représentations de curanderismo dans Chicana/o textes. Une tradition de guérison, une vision du monde, un système de croyances et de pratiques d'origines diverses, curanderismo répond aux besoins médicaux, religieux, culturels, sociaux et politiques des Chicanas/os à la fois sur le plan individuel et communautaire. Dans mon analyse de textes littéraires (Bless Me, Ultima de Rudolfo Anaya, les poèmes sélectionnés de Pat Mora, The Hungry Woman: A Mexican Medea de Cherríe Moraga) et du cours académique sur curanderismo enseigné à l'Université du Nouveau-Mexique à Albuquerque, que j’approche comme un texte culturel, curanderismo reflète les façons complexes et souvent ambiguës de représenter Chicana/o recherche d'identité, d’affirmation de soi et d’émancipation, résultat d'une longue histoire de domination et de discrimination de Chicana/o aux Etats-Unis. Dans les textes que j’aborde dans ma thèse curanderismo assume le rôle d'une puissante métaphore qui réunit une variété de valeurs, attitudes, concepts et notions dans le but ultimede célébrer le potentiel de soi-même.

Developing brief training interventions that benefit different forms of problem solving is challenging. In earlier research, Chrysikou (2006) showed that engaging in a task requiring generation of alternative uses of common objects improved subsequent insight problem solving. These benefits were attributed to a form of implicit transfer of processing involving enhanced construction of impromptu, on-the-spot or ‘ad hoc’ goal-directed categorizations of the problem elements. Following this, it is predicted that the alternative uses exercise should benefit abilities that govern goal-directed behaviour, such as fluid intelligence and executive functions. Similarly, an indirect intervention – self-affirmation (SA) – that has been shown to enhance cognitive and executive performance after self-regulation challenge and when under stereotype threat, may also increase adaptive goal-directed thinking and likewise should bolster problem-solving performance. In Experiment 1, brief single-session interventions, involving either alternative uses generation or SA, significantly enhanced both subsequent insight and visual–spatial fluid reasoning problem solving. In Experiment 2, we replicated the finding of benefits of both alternative uses generation and SA on subsequent insight problem-solving performance, and demonstrated that the underlying mechanism likely involves improved executive functioning. Even brief cognitive– and social–psychological interventions may substantially bolster different types of problem solving and may exert largely similar facilitatory effects on goal-directed behaviours.

With more or less 213.000 habitants, Mossoró is the second more developed city from the Rio Grande do Norte. The town is proclamated like the land of freedom. To so far, exist four moments in your history related with the defence of freedom that is point like truthful from so proclamation. Suchlike happenings are the first female vote on Brazil, the resistance against the Lampião s band, the worman s mutiny and the slave release in 1883, five year before the Áurea law sanction. These happenings are commemorate yearly on setember with one big theatrical event called by the freedom high. Inside this contexto of exaltation to freedom, there is one black movement by name black and beautiful. Is the present dissertation, talked about the building of black identities between the black militants of Mossoró and the dwellers from the Santo Antônio district. With such approach, we intend to think about possibles differences or likeness, how the militants and dwellers from the refered district self-calleds like blacks or not. We are understanding black identity like one process to self-affirmation done by specificities of the social context and the individual particularity. This way, the identity change into one dynamic and contextual reality, gone always by one business process against the interaction of the social actors. So we search to discuss the specificities that involve the process to building of black identities in the city of freedom

Currently in the social sciences the question of self-identity and its meanings, absorb as a central objective aspects that concern analysis of an imaginary (re) constructed from processes of identity affirmation. Ethnic discourse in the consolidation of social boundaries (re) assemble a social policy apparatus able to claim their belongings concerning his ancestry, as well as the interpretation of the meanings given to their territory by any group. This dissertation work is the result of an ethnographic study undertaken with the residents of the Community Maloca, Vargas located in the neighborhood adjacent to the commercial center in Aracaju - SE. Since February 2007 the group is certified by FCP - Palmares Cultural Foundation as a lasting community, while it is part of a special gift for being an urban center, varying from the majority of that remaining Maroons in their contexts, outcrops and specific land rural. It focuses on the work process of territorial formation of the hut, and the arrival of their first actors, contextualizing the process of legitimation refers to the territory they live, as well as the various narratives that (re) construct the time he lived, the relations kinship, conflict, the process of self-affirmation as runaways and the relationship of belonging with their living space / living contained in the imaginary city of Aracaju. Attempts are made to the opportunity to understand the meanings that affirm their ethnicity, parallel group for the pursuit of effective policies and guarantee of constitutional rights in the urban context.

This paper treats confessional printings as a non formal space for the female education. It reflects on the importance of the woman s role to the diffusion of Protestantism in general, and its Presbyterian trend in particular, besides commenting on the proliferation of printings at the First Republic and its relation with education. In this study, Brazilian Northeastern is seen as a relevant space to the diffusion of Protestantism in Brazil; especially on what concerns the relations between Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco. Thereby some fountains were fundamental, as the confessional printings, that is, newspapers, magazines, prospects and other materials recollected in archives located in Natal/RN and Recife/PE, and São Paulo. It was also provided a brief incursion on Portuguese confessional printings kept in Oporto, PT. New Cultural History was chosen as theoretic-methodological guide, franchising ways inside the history of book and reading with the help of concepts like Interdependence, Social Configuration (ELIAS, 1993, 1994) and Representation (CHARTIER, 1990), considering that the survey worked out culture-manufactured products that is, intentional materials. It is well known that publishing, or better, the dissemination of printed material used to be associated to Protestants missionary practices since Reform began and, as what concerns the investigated period, in Portuguese and Brazilian lands indistinctly. Printing material in general books, booklets, fragments, as well as the press itself played a central role in divulging reformed ideas, their social options and the means of being and intervening in the world. In this regard, the confessional printings established themselves as an educative, although non schooled, informal space, but, all considered, relevant, seen that they dialogue with another important demand of that social group: formal, literate education. Because it dealt with the diffusion of a printed culture supported by the written word, it required of that group a different modus operandi: formal education. The first letters schools at first, then the high schools later represented spaces established for the circulation of printing material in order that they should be read, divulged and comprehended. This survey intends at last to take a look at Protestantism which, in this context of self-affirmation, reserved a specific place to woman by working out a non formal educational proposal disseminated by printing material. Three models were highlighted in the reformed proposal: Christian education in itself, household education, whose references of motherhood and care towards the neighbor were present and, at last, education to the public space, with emphasis on the practice of teaching. This study also offers a brief dialogue between Brazil and Portugal because, when some periodic printing, book or something like that got to be published in one margin of the Atlantic Ocean, the other margin surely was affected by that feat, received it, divulged it, corroborating the argument in support of the circulation of these printings. The emergence of the digital order renewed the Victorian civilizing ideal and strengthened a world order of techno-economic dependence. The new grand narrative is the urgency of digital transformation of societies; a dream pursued without reflection by the populations of the periphery that ended into in a collision between McLuhan's two informational orders: cold and hot societies. Latin America as part of the periphery did not participate in the development of the informatic technologies and its historical legacy made the appropriation of these technologies more difficult. This paper examines the historical circumstances of this process: the development of a discourse around the digital networks, the consequences of this social construction in the region, the fragile efforts of Brazil to create technology, and the entrance of IT networks in the region. The results showed that the status of this kind of research in the region is weak so we alert about its consequences. We concluded that to create an informational order that may serve as a space of self-affirmation, freedom and heterogeneity, it is necessary to have a deep knowledge of the social and historical context that created its basic technologies, but Latin America is indifferent in such regard. Information Science has a central role in the region within this process but it has not developed it yet.

El presente trabajo es producto de la tesis doctoral titulada La generación de mundos de ficción en jóvenes sordos. La literatura como herramienta para el desarrollo del pensamiento creativo y del Proyecto de investigación: Estrategias pedagógico-didácticas para el desarrollo y aprendizaje de las habilidades sociales en escuelas públicas de enseñanza común y especial del gran Mendoza, dirigido por el Dr. Benito Parés.2 En dicho trabajo se pone en evidencia cómo a través de espacios de literatura se desarrollan las habilidades sociales de autoafirmación, entre otras, tal como la autoestima y la confianza en uno mismo a partir de la utilización de técnicas de creatividad literaria. En esta investigación nos interesó indagar respecto de las posibilidades de los jóvenes sordos para generar textos de ficción que permitieran desarrollar el pensamiento divergente, y pudimos advertir también, las habilidades sociales que se ponen en juego ante las tareas solicitadas a dichos jóvenes. A partir de las propuestas de trabajo realizadas por las Personas Sordas que participaron del proyecto, observamos por un lado el cambio de actitud frente a la tarea y por otro las manifestaciones de placer al realizar las actividades propuestas. En relación con los resultados, pudimos apreciar la presencia de habilidades sociales de autoafirmación, resolución de problemas, comunicacionales, de expresión de emociones y sentimientos entre otras, como consecuencia del trabajo con textos literarios.

No âmbito de um projeto, já concluído, sobre escolhas vocacionais realizadas pelos alunos à entrada do ensino secundário em Portugal, um dado mereceu a nossa particular atenção: a renúncia da influência, ou seja, a crença de que a escolha efetuada foi liberta de qualquer tipo de influência evidenciou-se como valor comum partilhado por todos os jovens inquiridos. Com base em dados, quantitativos (inquérito por questionário a 1793 alunos do ensino secundário) e qualitativos (24 entrevistas individuais semidiretivas a alunos do mesmo nível de ensino), recolhidos no âmbito do citado projeto, este artigo procura (re)situar a negação das influências externas no processo de definição do percurso escolar no quadro dos processos de construção de si na adolescência. Faremos isso confrontando a autonomia reivindicada pelos adolescentes com as fontes de influência que participam e suportam essa mesma escolha. Assim, identificar-se-ão ao longo do artigo quem são os interlocutores dos alunos no processo de (re)definição das suas vocações, a que suportes informativos recorrem para apoiar as suas escolhas e que grau de importância atribuem a estas fontes de informação. O conjunto dos dados apresentados permite melhor compreender a complexidade inerente aos processos de individuação na adolescência, ao enquadrar os legítimos discursos de afirmação de si na densa teia de relações sociais em que têm lugar, destacando o papel diferenciado desempenhado pelo mundo escolar, pela família e pela mídia.
