The Self-shrinking p-adic cryptographic generator (SSPCG) is a fast software stream cipher. Improved cryptoanalysis of the SSPCG is introduced. This cryptoanalysis makes more precise the length of the period of the generator. The linear complexity and the cryptography resistance against most recently used attacks are invesigated. Then we discuss how such attacks can be avoided. The results show that the sequence generated by a SSPCG has a large period, large linear complexity and is stable against the cryptographic attacks. This gives the reason to consider the SSPSG as suitable for critical cryptographic applications in stream cipher encryption algorithms.

We develop several algorithms for computations in Galois extensions of p-adic fields. Our algorithms are based on existing algorithms for number fields and are exact in the sense that we do not need to consider approximations to p-adic numbers. As an application we describe an algorithmic approach to prove or disprove various conjectures for local and global epsilon constants.

We construct indecomposable and noncrossed product division algebras over function fields of connected smooth curves X over Z(p). This is done by defining an index preserving morphism s: Br(<(K(X))over cap>)` --> Br(K(X))` which splits res : Br(K (X)) --> Br(<(K(X))over cap>), where <(K(X))over cap> is the completion of K (X) at the special fiber, and using it to lift indecomposable and noncrossed product division algebras over <(K(X))over cap>. A microfluidic hydrogen generator is presented in this work. Its fabrication, characterization, and integration with a micro proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell are described. Hydrogen gas is generated by the hydrolysis of aqueous ammonia borane. Gas generation, as well as the circulation of ammonia borane from a rechargeable fuel reservoir, is performed without any power consumption. To achieve this, directional growth and selective venting of hydrogen gas is maintained in the microchannels, which results in the circulation of fresh reactant from the fuel reservoir. In addition to this self-circulation mechanism, the hydrogen generator has been demonstrated to self-regulate gas generation to meet demands of a connected micro fuel cell. All of this is done without parasitic power consumption from the fuel cell. Results show its feasibility in applications of high-impedance systems. Lastly, recommendations for improvements and suggestions for future work are described

Background: Childhood asthma represents an increasing health problem and is the leading cause of hospital admission and absenteeism in children with chronic disease. It also compromises quality of life, eventually contributing to disturbances in self-concept. Self-concept is a recent and global perspective of “the self” and relates to skills, self-image and self-esteem. Little information is available on this topic and there are no data from Portuguese countryside towns. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of asthma among all school children in the 5th and 6th grades in a Portuguese countryside town and to establish its possible correlation with absenteeism and self-concept. Methods: In April 2002, two questionnaires were administered in the presence of the researcher to a group of 950 children attending different schools. The children completed the internationally renowned questionnaires: ISAAC and the Self-Concept Scale by Susan Harter. Results: Our sample (n = 818) had a mean age of 11 years (10-15 years) and a male-to-female ratio of 1/1. The cumulative prevalence of asthma was11.9% and that of active asthma was 8.8 %; 63.9% of asthmatics were male and 36.1 % were female. The mean age of asthmatics was 11.34 years and 74 % had active symptoms. Comparison of this group of 97 asthmatic children with the remaining children revealed a statistically significant correlation between the presence of asthma and school absenteeism (global: p = 0.04; gymnastics: 0.05). Regarding the Self-Concept Scale a statistically significant association was found between the presence of asthma and school achievement (p = 0.027), physical appearance (p = 0.015), behavior (p < 0.000) and self-esteem (p < 0.000). No statistically significant correlations were found in social acceptance (p = 0.289) or athletic competence (p = 0.085). Asthmatic boys had higher self-concept scores than girls, except in the domain of behavior. Conclusions: Twelve percent of the population studied was asthmatic. In asthmatic children, absenteeism was higher and self-concept was lower for almost all domains, except social acceptance and athletic achievement, probably due to overprotection.

Introduction: The prevalence of multimorbidity (MM) in hospitalized patients is increasing and recognized as an important factor that may modify the strategies of treatment and increase the length of stay. Little is currently known about the prevalence of MM in the general population and if measured or self-reported diseases are different in the outpatient setting compared to hospitalized patients. The objective of the study was, therefore, to assess the prevalence of self-reported and measured MM in representative sample of the general population aged 35-75 years in Switzerland. Method: Data were obtained from the population based CoLaus Study: 3712 participants (1965 women, 50±9 years). MM was defined as presenting >=2 morbidities according to a list of 27 items (either measured or self-reported data, according to Barret et al.) or a Functional Comorbidity Index (FCI) (18 items, measured only). Results: The prevalence of MM according to these three definitions is summarized in the table 1. For all definitions prevalence of MM was higher in women, elderly participants, those with lower education levels, Swiss nationals, former smokers and obese participants. The prevalence of MM when measured data were used was significantly higher than according to self-reported (p<0.001). Multivariate analysis confirmed most of these associations, except that no difference was found for educational level and for overweight participants. Conclusion: The prevalence of MM is high in the general population, ranging from 13.8 and 50.3% even in the younger age group. The prevalence is higher in women, and increases with age and weight. The prevalence varies considerably according to the definition and is lower when using self-reported compared to measured data.

[EN]This dissertation analyses the Eastern cultural influences present in the aesthetic of Buck’s best seller The Good Earth. The objective is to study the characteristics of Buck’s aesthetic as a product of a creative process of self-translation between Mandarin and English. The methodology of analysis has focused on the characters of the novel, the strategies used to refer to them, the characters’ idiolect and their social interaction (facework). Finally, these cultural aspects have been compared with one of the Spanish translations available of the novel. The results obtained show a novel highly influenced by the Eastern tradition, where the idiolect of the characters show an influence from both East and West possible thanks to the mechanism of self-translation.

Objectives : To evaluate self-esteem, coping styles, and health-related quality of life and their relationships in Polish adolescents and young adults with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate and related sex differences. Design and Participants : Self-report questionnaires measuring self-esteem (Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory), coping styles (Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations), and health-related quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) were completed by 48 participants with cleft lip and palate (age, 16 to 23 years; 31 males, 17 females) and 48 controls without cleft lip and palate (age, 16 to 23 years; 28 males, 20 females) matched for age, place of residence, and socioeconomic status. Results : Regarding self-esteem, individuals with cleft lip and palate scored higher on body functioning (P < .01) and defensive self-enhancement (P < .05). Self-control showed an interaction effect: Females with cleft lip and palate scored higher than controls, but males did not differ between groups (P < .05). Males with cleft lip and palate scored lower than controls in personal power but higher in body functioning (P < .05); females showed no differences between groups. The groups did not differ with regard to coping styles or quality of life, but several correlations were found between self-esteem and coping styles, and quality of life (P < .01). Conclusions : Late adolescents and young adults with and without cleft lip and palate differed little in terms of psychological adjustment measures. The higher scores in defensive self-enhancement of individuals with cleft lip and palate suggest the need for instruments measuring social approval in psychosocial adjustment research involving this group.

There is evidence of personality disorders in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). To date, there have been no published quantitative studies on personality traits in JME. The aim of the work described here was to study a group of patients with JME and quantitatively measure personality traits. We evaluated 42 patients (mean age: 26.57 years, SD: 8.38) and 42 controls (mean age: 26.96, SD: 8.48) using a validated personality inventory, the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). We applied two scores, one for the Beck Depression Inventory and one for the State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory, as depression and anxiety may impact the performance of these patients on the TCI. We compared both groups on TCI scales using analysis of covariance with Beck Depression Inventory and State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory scores as covariates. Patients with JME obtained significantly higher scores on Novelty Seeking (P=0.001) and Harm Avoidance (P=0.002) and significantly lower scores on Self-Directedness (P=0.001). Patients with JME have a higher expression of impulsive personality traits that demand early recognition to avoid further consequences and facilitate social insertion, consequently avoiding future stigma. We analyze the sequences of round-off errors of the orbits of a discretized planar rotation, from a probabilistic angle. It was shown [Bosio & Vivaldi, 2000] that for a dense set of parameters, the discretized map can be embedded into an expanding p-adic dynamical system, which serves as a source of deterministic randomness. For each parameter value, these systems can generate infinitely many distinct pseudo-random sequences over a finite alphabet, whose average period is conjectured to grow exponentially with the bit-length of the initial condition (the seed). We study some properties of these symbolic sequences, deriving a central limit theorem for the deviations between round-off and exact orbits, and obtain bounds concerning repetitions of words. We also explore some asymptotic problems computationally, verifying, among other things, that the occurrence of words of a given length is consistent with that of an abstract Bernoulli sequence.
