The morphological and structural modifications induced in sapphire by surface treatment with femtosecond laser radiation were studied. Single-crystal sapphire wafers cut parallel to the (0 1 2) planes were treated with 560 fs, 1030 nm wavelength laser radiation using wide ranges of pulse energy and repetition rate. Self-ordered periodic structures with an average spatial periodicity of similar to 300 nm were observed for fluences slightly higher than the ablation threshold. For higher fluences the interaction was more disruptive and extensive fracture, exfoliation, and ejection of ablation debris occurred. Four types of particles were found in the ablation debris: (a) spherical nanoparticles about 50 nm in diameter; (b) composite particles between 150 and 400 nm in size; (c) rounded resolidified particles about 100-500 nm in size; and (d) angular particles presenting a lamellar structure and deformation twins. The study of those particles by selected area electron diffraction showed that the spherical nanoparticles and the composite particles are amorphous, while the resolidified droplets and the angular particles, present a crystalline a-alumina structure, the same of the original material. Taking into consideration the existing ablation theories, it is proposed that the spherical nanoparticles are directly emitted from the surface in the ablation plume, while resolidified droplets are emitted as a result of the ablation process, in the liquid phase, in the low intensity regime, and by exfoliation, in the high intensity regime. Nanoparticle clusters are formed by nanoparticle coalescence in the cooling ablation plume. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report self-similar properties of periodic structures remarkably organized in the two-parameter space for a two-gene system, described by two-dimensional symmetric map. The map consists of difference equations derived from the chemical reactions for gene expression and regulation. We characterize the system by using Lyapunov exponents and isoperiodic diagrams identifying periodic windows, denominated Arnold tongues and shrimp-shaped structures. Period-adding sequences are observed for both periodic windows. We also identify Fibonacci-type series and Golden ratio for Arnold tongues, and period multiple-of-three windows for shrimps. In this study, we investigate the possibility of mode localization occurrence in a non-periodic Pfluger`s column model of a rocket with an intermediate concentrated mass at its middle point. We discuss the effects of varying the intermediate mass magnitude and its position and the resulting energy confinement for two cases. Free vibration analysis and the severity of mode localization are appraised, without decoupling the system, by considering as a solution basis the fundamental free response or dynamical solution. This allows for the reduction of the dimension of the algebraic modal equation that arises from satisfying the boundary and continuity conditions. By using the same methodology, we also consider the case of a cantilevered Pluger`s column with rotational stiffness at the middle support instead of an intermediate concentrated mass. A 74 year old patient, EW, with dorsolateral frontal cortical compression due to hyperostosis frontalis interna, in the absence of the Morgagni or Stewart-Morel syndromes, is described. In addition to conventional neuropsychological measures EW was administered one nonspatial and two spatial self ordered working memory tasks, as well as a standard measure of fluid intelligence or g. She showed impaired performance on all three self ordered working memory tasks compared with a normal control group of 10 subjects matched for age, education, sex, and IQ. By contrast, her performance on the fluid intelligence test was comparable with that of the controls. It is concluded that the compression of dorsolateral frontal cortex accompanying hyperostosis frontalis interna may produce selective cognitive impairment.

Micro- and nano-patterned materials are of great importance for the design of new nanoscale electronic, optical and mechanical devices, ranging from sensors to displays. A prospective system that can support a designed functionality is elastomeric polyurethane thin films with nano- or micromodulated surface structures ("wrinkles"). These wrinkles can be induced on different lengthscales by mechanically stretching the films, without the need for any sophisticated lithographic techniques. In the present article we focus on the experimental control of the wrinkling process. A simple model for wrinkle formation is also discussed, and some preliminary results reported. Hierarchical assembly of these tunable structures paves the way for the development of a new class of materials with a wide range of applications, from electronics to biomedicine.

An experimental study is made of the lower pass-band of waveguides built as necklaces of oblate spheroids. Short lengths of guide are tested in open resonators. The dominant mode is found to be a glow-wave dipole type having no low-frequency cut off. High Q factors indicate low attenuations. Perturbation measurements demonstrate this energy to be concentrated in the vicinity of the guide.

We prove that all the eigenvalues of a certain highly non-self-adjoint Sturm–Liouville differential operator are real. The results presented are motivated by and extend those recently found by various authors (Benilov et al. (2003) [3], Davies (2007) [7] and Weir (2008) [18]) on the stability of a model describing small oscillations of a thin layer of fluid inside a rotating cylinder.

We present helium scattering measurements of a water ad-layer grown on a O(2 1)/Ru(0001) surface. The adsorbed water layer results in a well ordered helium diffraction pattern with systematic extinctions of diffraction spots due to glide line symmetries. The data reflects a well-defined surface structure that maintains proton order even at surprisingly high temperatures of 140 K. The diffraction data we measure is consistent with a structure recently derived from STM measurements performed at 6 K. Comparison with recent DFT calculation is in partial agreement, suggesting that these calculations might be underestimating the contribution of relative water molecule orientations to the binding energy.

The fundamental objective of this Ph. D. dissertation is to demonstrate that, under particular circumstances which cover most of the structures with practical interest, periodic structures can be understood and analyzed by means of closed waveguide theories and techniques. To that aim, in the first place a transversely periodic cylindrical structure is considered and the wave equation, under a combination of perfectly conducting and periodic boundary conditions, is studied. This theoretical study runs parallel to the classic analysis of perfectly conducting closed waveguides. Under the light shed by the aforementioned study it is clear that, under certain very common periodicity conditions, transversely periodic cylindrical structures share a lot of properties with closed waveguides. Particularly, they can be characterized by a complete set of TEM, TE and TM modes. As a result, this Ph. D. dissertation introduces the transversely periodic waveguide concept. Once the analogies between the modes of a transversely periodic waveguide and the ones of a closed waveguide have been established, a generalization of a well-known closed waveguide characterization method, the generalized Transverse Resonance Technique, is developed for the obtention of transversely periodic modes. At this point, all the necessary elements for the consideration of discontinuities between two different transversely periodic waveguides are at our disposal. The analysis of this type of discontinuities will be carried out by means of another well known closed waveguide method, the Mode Matching technique. This Ph. D. dissertation contains a sufficient number of examples, including the analysis of a wire-medium slab, a cross-shaped patches periodic surface and a parallel plate waveguide with a textured surface, that demonstrate that the Transverse Resonance Technique - Mode Matching hybrid is highly precise, efficient and versatile. Thus, the initial statement: ”periodic structures can be understood and analyzed by means of closed waveguide theories and techniques”, will be corroborated. Finally, this Ph. D. dissertation contains an adaptation of the aforementioned generalized Transverse Resonance Technique by means of which the analysis of laterally open periodic waveguides, such as the well known Substrate Integrated Waveguides, can be carried out without any approximation. The analysis of this type of structures has suscitated a lot of interest in the recent past and the previous analysis techniques proposed always resorted to some kind of fictitious wall to close the structure. vii Resumen El principal objetivo de esta tesis doctoral es demostrar que, bajo ciertas circunstancias que se cumplen para la gran mayoría de estructuras con interés práctico, las estructuras periódicas se pueden analizar y entender con conceptos y técnicas propias de las guías de onda cerradas. Para ello, en un primer lugar se considera una estructura cilíndrical transversalmente periódica y se estudia la ecuación de onda bajo una combinación de condiciones de contorno periódicas y de conductor perfecto. Este estudio teórico y de caracter general, sigue el análisis clásico de las guías de onda cerradas por conductor eléctrico perfecto. A la luz de los resultados queda claro que, bajo ciertas condiciones de periodicidad (muy comunes en la práctica) las estructuras cilíndricas transversalmente periódicas guardan multitud de analogías con las guías de onda cerradas. En particular, pueden ser descritas mediante un conjunto completo de modos TEM, TE y TM. Por ello, ésta tesis introduce el concepto de guía de onda transversalmente periódica. Una vez establecidas las similitudes entre las soluciones de la ecuación de onda, bajo una combinación de condiciones de contorno periódicas y de conductor perfecto, y los modos de guías de onda cerradas, se lleva a cabo, con éxito, la adaptación de un conocido método de caracterización de guías de onda cerradas, la técnica de la Resonancia Transversal Generalizada, para la obtención de los modos de guías transversalmente periódicas. En este punto, se tienen todos los elementos necesarios para considerar discontinuidades entre guías de onda transversalmente periódicas. El analisis de este tipo de discontinuidades se llevará a cabo mediante otro conocido método de análisis de estructuras cerradas, el Ajuste Modal. Esta tesis muestra multitud de ejemplos, como por ejemplo el análisis de un wire-medium slab, una superficie de parches con forma de cruz o una guía de placas paralelas donde una de dichas placas tiene cierta textura, en los que se demuestra que el método híbrido formado por la Resonancia Transversal Generalizada y el Ajuste Modal, es tremendamente preciso, eficiente y versátil y confirmará la validez de el enunciado inicial: ”las estructuras periódicas se pueden analizar y entender con conceptos y técnicas propias de las guías de onda cerradas” Para terminar, esta tésis doctoral incluye también una modificación de la técnica de la Resonancia Transversal Generalizada mediante la cual es posible abordar el análisis de estructuras periódica abiertas en los laterales, como por ejemplo las famosas guías de onda integradas en sustrato, sin ninguna aproximación. El análisis de este tipo de estructuras ha despertado mucho interés en los últimos años y las técnicas de análisis propuestas hasta ix el momento acostumbran a recurrir a algún tipo de pared ficticia para simular el carácter abierto de la estructura.

In this thesis, a numerical design approach has been proposed and developed based on the transmission matrix method in order to characterize periodic and quasi-periodic photonic structures in silicon-on-insulator. The approach and its performance have been extensively tested with specific structures in 2D and its validity has been verified in 3D.

The self-ordered pointing test (SOPT; Petrides & Milner, 1982) is a test of non-spatial executive working memory requiring the ability to generate and monitor a sequence of responses. Although used with developmental clinical populations there are few normative data against which to compare atypical performance. Typically developing children (5!11 years) and young adults performed two versions of the SOPT, one using pictures of familiar objects and the other hard-to-verbalise abstract designs. Performance improved with age but the children did not reach adult levels of performance. Participants of all ages found the object condition easier than the abstract condition, suggesting that verbal processes are utilised by the SOPT. However, performance on the task was largely independent from verbal and nonverbal cognitive ability. Overall the results suggest that the SOPT is a sensitive measure of executive working memory.
