This paper presents possible selective current compensation strategies based on the Conservative Power Theory (CPT). This recently proposed theory, introduces the concept of complex power conservation under non-sinusoidal conditions. Moreover, the related current decompositions results in several current terms, which are associated with a specific physical phenomena (power absorption P, energy storage Q, voltage and current distortion D). Such current components are used in this work for the definition of different current compensators, which can be selective in terms of minimizing particular disturbing effects. The choice of one or other current component for compensation directly affects the sizing and cost of active and/or passive devices and it will be demonstrated that it can be done to attend predefined limits for harmonic distortion, unbalances and/or power factor. Single-phase compensation strategies will be discussed by means of the CPT and simulation results will demonstrate their performance. © 2009 IEEE.

Considering the Conservative Power Theory (CPT), this paper proposes some novel compensation strategies for shunt passive or active devices. The CPT current decompositions result in several current terms (associated with specific physical phenomena), which were used for the definition of different selective current compensators, in terms of minimizing particular disturbing effects. Simulation results have been demonstrated in order to validate the possibilities and performance of the proposed strategies for single and three-phase four wired circuits.

Line converters have become an attractive AC/DC power conversion solution in industrial applications. Line converters are based on controllable semiconductor switches, typically insulated gate bipolar transistors. Compared to the traditional diode bridge-based power converters line converters have many advantageous characteristics, including bidirectional power flow, controllable de-link voltage and power factor and sinusoidal line current. This thesis considers the control of the lineconverter and its application to power quality improving. The line converter control system studied is based on the virtual flux linkage orientation and the direct torque control (DTC) principle. A new DTC-based current control scheme is introduced and analyzed. The overmodulation characteristics of the DTC converter are considered and an analytical equation for the maximum modulation index is derived. The integration of the active filtering features to the line converter isconsidered. Three different active filtering methods are implemented. A frequency-domain method, which is based on selective harmonic sequence elimination, anda time-domain method, which is effective in a wider frequency band, are used inharmonic current compensation. Also, a voltage feedback active filtering method, which mitigates harmonic sequences of the grid voltage, is implemented. The frequency-domain and the voltage feedback active filtering control systems are analyzed and controllers are designed. The designs are verified with practical measurements. The performance and the characteristics of the implemented active filtering methods are compared and the effect of the L- and the LCL-type line filteris discussed. The importance of the correct grid impedance estimate in the voltage feedback active filter control system is discussed and a new measurement-based method to obtain it is proposed. Also, a power conditioning system (PCS) application of the line converter is considered. A new method for correcting the voltage unbalance of the PCS-fed island network is proposed and experimentally validated.

A neural method is presented in this paper to identify the harmonic components of an ac controller. The components are identified by analyzing the single-phase current waveform. The method effectiveness is verified by applying it to an active power filter (APF) model dedicated to the selective harmonic compensation. Simulation results using theoretical and experimental data are presented to validate the proposed approach. © 2008 IEEE.

A K+ channel gene has been cloned from Drosophila melanogaster by complementation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells defective for K+ uptake. Naturally expressed in the neuromuscular tissues of adult flies, this gene confers K+ transport capacity on yeast cells when heterologously expressed. In Xenopus laevis oocytes, expression yields an ungated K+-selective current whose attributes resemble the “leak” conductance thought to mediate the resting potential of vertebrate myelinated neurons but whose molecular nature has long remained elusive. The predicted protein has two pore (P) domains and four membrane-spanning helices and is a member of a newly recognized K+ channel family. Expression of the channel in flies and yeast cells makes feasible studies of structure and in vivo function using genetic approaches that are not possible in higher animals.

Summary: Decrease in glutathione (GSH) levels was observed in cerebrospinal fluid, prefrontal cortex and post-mortem striatum of schizophrenia patients. Evidences suggest a defect in GSH synthesis at the levels of the rate-limiting synthesizing enzyme, glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL). Indeed, polymorphisms in the gene of the modifier subunit of GCL (GCLM) was shown to be associated with the disease in three different populations, GCLM gene expression is decreaséd in fibroblasts from patients and the increase in GCL activity induced by an oxidative stress is lower in patients' fibroblasts compared to controls. GSH being a major antioxydant and redox regulator, its presence is of high importance for protecting cells against oxidative stress. The aim of the present work was to use various substances to increase GSH levels by diverse strategies. Since the synthesizing enzyme GCL is defective, bypassing this enzyme was the first strategy we used. GSH ethyl ester (GSHEE), a membrane permeable analog of GSH, succeeded in replenishing GSH levels in cultured neurons and astrocytes previously depleted in GSH by L-buthionine-(S,R)-sulfoximine (BSO), an inhibitor of GCL. GSHEE also abolished dopamine-induced decrease of NMDA-mediated calcium response observed in BSO-treated neurons. y-Glutamylcysteine ethyl ester (GCSE), a membrane permeable analog of the product of GCL, increased GSH levels only in astrocytes. The second strategy was to boost the defective enzyme GCL. While quercetin (flavonoid) could increase GSH levels only in astrocytes, curcumin (polyphenol) and tertbutylhydroquinone (quinone) were successful in both neurons and astrocytes, via an increase in the gene expression of the two subunits of GCL and, consequently, an increase in the activity of the enzyme. However, FK506, an immunosupressant, was unefficient. Treating astrocytes from GCLM KO mice showed that the modulatory subunit is necessary for the action of the substances. Finally, since cysteine is the limiting precursor in the synthesis of GSH, we hypothesized that we could increase GSH levels by providing more of this precursor. N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), a cysteine donor, was administered to schizophrenia patients, using adouble-blind and cross-over protocol. NAC significantly improved the mismatch negativity (MMN), a component of the auditory evoked potentials, thought to reflect selective current flowing through open, unblocked NMDA channels. Considering that NMDA function is reduced when GSH levels are low, increasing these levels with NAC could improve NMDA function as reflected by the improvement in the generation of the MMN.

Maakaapelointien nopea rakennusaikataulu tuo monia haasteita verkkoyhtiöille. Maakaa-pelointien korkea maasulkuvirran ja loistehon tuotto verrattuna avojohtoverkkoon tulee huomioida yhtiössä verkkoa rakennettaessa. Tässä diplomityössä selvitetään PKS Sähkönsiirto Oy:n verkostostrategian mukaisten maakaapelointien vaikutuksia sähköverkolle. Työssä on arvioitu tavoiteverkon mukaisten maakaapeleiden aiheuttamaa maasulkuvirran ja loistehon tuoton tasoa. Tulosten perusteel-la on tehty johtopäätökset mihin verkkoyhtiön on kiinnitettävä huomioita kaapelointeja suunnitellessa ja toteuttaessa.

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a plant hormone involved in the response of plants to reduced water availability. Reduction of guard cell turgor by ABA diminishes the aperture of the stomatal pore and thereby contributes to the ability of the plant to conserve water during periods of drought. Previous work has demonstrated that cytosolic Ca2+ is involved in the signal transduction pathway that mediates the reduction in guard cell turgor elicited by ABA. Here we report that ABA uses a Ca2+-mobilization pathway that involves cyclic adenosine 5′-diphosphoribose (cADPR). Microinjection of cADPR into guard cells caused reductions in turgor that were preceded by increases in the concentration of free Ca2+ in the cytosol. Patch clamp measurements of isolated guard cell vacuoles revealed the presence of a cADPR-elicited Ca2+-selective current that was inhibited at cytosolic Ca2+ ≥ 600 nM. Furthermore, microinjection of the cADPR antagonist 8-NH2-cADPR caused a reduction in the rate of turgor loss in response to ABA in 54% of cells tested, and nicotinamide, an antagonist of cADPR production, elicited a dose-dependent block of ABA-induced stomatal closure. Our data provide definitive evidence for a physiological role for cADPR and illustrate one mechanism of stimulus-specific Ca2+ mobilization in higher plants. Taken together with other recent data [Wu, Y., Kuzma, J., Marechal, E., Graeff, R., Lee, H. C., Foster, R. & Chua, N.-H. (1997) Science 278, 2126–2130], these results establish cADPR as a key player in ABA signal transduction pathways in plants.

Working memory refers to the ability of the brain to store and manipulate information over brief time periods, ranging from seconds to minutes. As opposed to long-term memory, which is critically dependent upon hippocampal processing, critical substrates for working memory are distributed in a modality-specific fashion throughout cortex. N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors play a crucial role in the initiation of long-term memory. Neurochemical mechanisms underlying the transient memory storage required for working memory, however, remain obscure. Auditory sensory memory, which refers to the ability of the brain to retain transient representations of the physical features (e.g., pitch) of simple auditory stimuli for periods of up to approximately 30 sec, represents one of the simplest components of the brain working memory system. Functioning of the auditory sensory memory system is indexed by the generation of a well-defined event-related potential, termed mismatch negativity (MMN). MMN can thus be used as an objective index of auditory sensory memory functioning and a probe for investigating underlying neurochemical mechanisms. Monkeys generate cortical activity in response to deviant stimuli that closely resembles human MMN. This study uses a combination of intracortical recording and pharmacological micromanipulations in awake monkeys to demonstrate that both competitive and noncompetitive NMDA antagonists block the generation of MMN without affecting prior obligatory activity in primary auditory cortex. These findings suggest that, on a neurophysiological level, MMN represents selective current flow through open, unblocked NMDA channels. Furthermore, they suggest a crucial role of cortical NMDA receptors in the assessment of stimulus familiarity/unfamiliarity, which is a key process underlying working memory performance.

Considering the operation of shunt active compensators, such as active power filters, this paper proposes possible compensation strategies by means of the recent formulation of the Conservative Power Theory (CPT). The CPT current's decomposition results in several current components, which are associated with specific load characteristics (power transfer, energy storage, unbalances and/or non linearities). These current components are used for the definition of different compensation strategies, which can be selective in terms of minimizing particular disturbing effects. In order to validate the applicability of these new compensation strategies, simulation and experimental results for three-phase four-wire systems are presented. © 2011 IEEE.

Four-leg dc-ac power converters are widely used for the power grids to manage grid voltage unbalance caused by the interconnection of single-phase or three-phase unbalanced loads. These converters can further be connected in parallel to increase the overall power rating. The control of these converters poses a particular challenge if they are placed far apart with no links between them (e.g., in islanded microgrids). This challenge is studied in this paper with each four-leg converter designed to have improved common current sharing and selective voltage-quality enhancement. The common current sharing, including zero sequence component, is necessary since loads are spread over the microgrid and they are hence the common responsibility of all converters. The voltage-quality enhancement consideration should however be more selective since different loads have different sensitivity levels towards voltage disturbances. Converters connected to the more sensitive load buses should therefore be selectively triggered for compensation when voltage unbalances at their protected buses exceed the predefined thresholds. The proposed scheme is therefore different from conventional centralized schemes protecting only a common bus. Simulation and experimental results obtained have verified the effectiveness of the proposed scheme when applied to a four-wire islanded microgrid.

Microcontroller-based peak current mode control of a buck converter is investigated. The new solution uses a discrete time controller with digital slope compensation. This is implemented using only a single-chip microcontroller to achieve desirable cycle-by-cycle peak current limiting. The digital controller is implemented as a two-pole, two-zero linear difference equation designed using a continuous time model of the buck converter and a discrete time transform. Subharmonic oscillations are removed with digital slope compensation using a discrete staircase ramp. A 16 W hardware implementation directly compares analog and digital control. Frequency response measurements are taken and it is shown that the crossover frequency and expected phase margin of the digital control system match that of its analog counterpart.
