Today's generation of Internet devices has changed how users are interacting with media, from passive and unidirectional users to proactive and interactive. Users can use these devices to comment or rate a TV show and search for related information regarding characters, facts or personalities. This phenomenon is known as second screen. This paper describes SAM, an EU-funded research project that focuses on developing an advanced digital media delivery platform based on second screen interaction and content syndication within a social media context, providing open and standardised ways of characterising, discovering and syndicating digital assets. This work provides an overview of the project and its main objectives, focusing on the NLP challenges to be faced and the technologies developed so far.

Social networking apps, sites and technologies offer a wide range of opportunities for businesses and developers to exploit the vast amount of information and user-generated content produced through social networking. In addition, the notion of second screen TV usage appears more influential than ever, with viewers continuously seeking further information and deeper engagement while watching their favourite movies or TV shows. In this work, the authors present SAM, an innovative platform that combines social media, content syndication and targets second screen usage to enhance media content provisioning, renovate the interaction with end-users and enrich their experience. SAM incorporates modern technologies and novel features in the areas of content management, dynamic social media, social mining, semantic annotation and multi-device representation to facilitate an advanced business environment for broadcasters, content and metadata providers, and editors to better exploit their assets and increase their revenues.

Com o desenvolvimento das tecnologias da Comunicação, o ser humano tem alterado os seus hábitos de consumo televisivo. Neste contexto, destaca-se o uso de aplicações mobile designadas como Second Screen, as quais, entre outras possibilidades, permitem interagir com conteúdos adicionais aos que se encontram a ser transmitidos na televisão. Sendo este fenómeno relativamente recente, pretende-se compreender qual a abordagem a adotar no desenvolvimento de uma prototipagem ágil de aplicações Second Screen centradas no utilizador. De modo a compreender o respetivo processo, iniciou-se o estudo com um enquadramento teórico, que possibilitou a familiarização com as aplicações Second Screen e ferramentas de prototipagem ágil já existentes. Após o enquadramento teórico, procedeu-se à criação de dois mockups de aplicações Second Screen, que foram testados em Focus Groups. A partir dos dados obtidos, desenvolveram-se dois protótipos ágeis, os quais foram submetidos a uma última fase de testes (Experimentação por observação, Entrevista e Questionário de avaliação, respetivamente). Os participantes deste estudo foram os mesmos para ambas as fases de testes, constituindo um grupo de consumidores, um grupo de designers e um grupo de especialistas na área de prototipagem. Os resultados obtidos, a partir dos protótipos concebidos, comprovam a validade do processo realizado neste estudo, podendo este ser usado para desenvolver protótipos de aplicações mobile e Second Screen.

Discussion paper commissioned by the RSE for its official working group on BBC Charter Renewal. The paper sought to investigate evolving mobile digital platforms and audience habits. Beyond this the research was intended to highlight areas where the BBC might develop a more commercial strategy in the new charter period. The paper fed into the discussions around the RSE response to the government consultation on BBC Charter renewal. The paper is significant to measure the impact of research around interactive Second Screen activity in the media landscape.

This book examines an emerging and fast evolving phenomena: that a growing number of people engage with two screens whilst watching television. It seems a simple concept – until we discover the important implications. In doing this, this book will move way beyond the study of online and multimedia content. It will go past the impact of mobile and multi-platform technology on the media. Instead it will examine how this new concept of second screen interactivity changes the way we watch, produce, commission and monetise television programmes in the UK.

Digital media have contributed to significant disruptions in the business of audience measurement. Television broadcasters have long relied on simple and authoritative measures of who is watching what. The demand for ratings data, as a common currency in transactions involving advertising and program content, will likely remain, but accompanying measurements of audience engagement with media content would also be of value. Today's media environment increasingly includes social media and second-screen use, providing a data trail that affords an opportunity to measure engagement. If the limitations of using social media to indicate audience engagement can be overcome, social media use may allow for quantitative and qualitative measures of engagement. Raw social media data must be contextualized, and it is suggested that tools used by sports analysts be incorporated to do so. Inspired by baseball's Sabremetrics, the authors propose Telemetrics in an attempt to separate actual performance from contextual factors. Telemetrics facilitates measuring audience activity in a manner controlling for factors such as time slot, network, and so forth. It potentially allows both descriptive and predictive measures of engagement.

This article presents a cascaded arrangement comprising a double-layer frequency selective surface circularly polarizing (CPFSS) and a second screen that can be switched between artificial magnetic conduction (AMC) or perfect electric conducting. (PEC) states. The CPFSS consists of two stacked aluminium sheets patterned with periodic split ring structures While the AMC is a PCB sheet patterned with metallic squares interconnected by links By either open or short circuiting these links it is shown that the cascade of screens can be made to twist, or not to twist, an incident 45 degrees linearly polirized signal through 90 degrees upon reflection from the assembly The system was designed and optimized using CST software and predictions were validated experimentally and measured monostatic reflection loss results (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Microwave Opt Technol Lett 52 577-580, 2010. Burkholderia cenocepacia (formerly Burkholderia cepacia complex genomovar III) causes chronic lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis. In this work, we used a modified signature-tagged mutagenesis (STM) strategy for the isolation of B. cenocepacia mutants that cannot survive in vivo. Thirty-seven specialized plasposons, each carrying a unique oligonucleotide tag signature, were constructed and used to examine the survival of 2,627 B. cenocepacia transposon mutants, arranged in pools of 37 unique mutants, after a 10-day lung infection in rats by using the agar bead model. The recovered mutants were screened by real-time PCR, resulting in the identification of 260 mutants which presumably did not survive within the lungs. These mutants were repooled into smaller pools, and the infections were repeated. After a second screen, we isolated 102 mutants unable to survive in the rat model. The location of the transposon in each of these mutants was mapped within the B. cenocepacia chromosomes. We identified mutations in genes involved in cellular metabolism, global regulation, DNA replication and repair, and those encoding bacterial surface structures, including transmembrane proteins and cell surface polysaccharides. Also, we found 18 genes of unknown function, which are conserved in other bacteria. A subset of 12 representative mutants that were individually examined using the rat model in competition with the wild-type strain displayed reduced survival, confirming the predictive value of our STM screen. This study provides a blueprint to investigate at the molecular level the basis for survival and persistence of B. cenocepacia within the airways.

A Short film about War is a narrative documentary artwork made entirely from information found on the worldwide web. In ten minutes this two screen gallery installation takes viewers around the world to a variety of war zones as seen through the collective eyes of the online photo sharing community Flickr, and as witnessed by a variety of existing military and civilian bloggers. As the ostensibly documentary 'film' plays itself out, a second screen logs the provenance of images, blog fragments and gps locations of each element comprising the work, so that the same information is simultaneously communicated to the viewer in two parallel formats -on one hand as a dramatised reportage and on the other hand as a text log. In offerring this tautology, we are attempting to explore and reveal the way in which information changes as it is gathered, edited and then mediated through networked communications technologies or broadcast media, and how that changes and distorts meaning -especially for (the generally wealthy minority of) the world's users of high speed broadband networks, who have become used to the treacherously persuasive panoptic view that google earth (and the worldwide web) appears to give us.

Num contexto de mudança a nível de hábitos sociais em que impera a necessidade de comunicar de uma forma mais natural e instantânea quanto possível, o cada vez mais informado e exigente consumidor tem vindo a adquirir um papel mais participativo na comunicação e construção das marcas. Se outrora assistíamos passivamente a uma comunicação unidirecional e desprovida de interactividade, hoje impera a possibilidade de podermos manipular ou construir conteúdos de acordo com as nossas necessidades e preferências individuais. Neste contexto, a comunicação nos novos meios tecnológicos tem procurado responder à dispersão de atenção por parte do consumidor, que se socorre simultaneamente de diversos ecrãs. Porém, no ecrã em que o novo consumidor mais despende o seu tempo, e com o qual ainda se sente mais à vontade, a televisão, a comunicação interactiva ainda se encontra pouca explorada. Para os profissionais de publicidade, e sobretudo para os anunciantes, o conceito de publicidade interactiva, quando inserida no meio televisivo, é deveras recente, carecendo de um maior aprofundamento teórico e empírico. Tendo em vista este aprofundamento, o objectivo geral deste trabalho consiste na caracterização do panorama da publicidade interactiva na televisão em Portugal tendo como termo de comparação o estrangeiro. A dissertação assumiu a forma de um estudo exploratório e misto sequencial, desenvolvido com base na análise de conteúdo de um conjunto de casos nacionais de Publicidade Interactiva na Televisão fornecidos pelo MEO e de casos estrangeiros publicados na Internet. Assentando a análise numa grelha própria, procurou caracterizar-se o panorama actual da Publicidade Interactiva na Televisão nacional tendo como termo de comparação o que se passa lá fora, do ponto de vista dos conteúdos, da partilha destes, da dependência de um second screen e dos objectivos subjacentes aos anúncios. Foi possível concluir com este estudo que, apesar de a Publicidade Interactiva na Televisão se encontrar mais desenvolvida no estrangeiro, em Portugal observaram-se características singulares e positivas, o que aponta que nos encontramos a evoluir a passos largos para alcançar melhores experiências interactivas.

Abstract Broadcast video can be augmented with links to information related to the topics in the video and to other related entities. Viewers are sufficiently digitally literate that they can carry out their own searches during or after a broadcast. We investigate what types of information viewers would actually like to see while being engaged in watching a news broadcast. On the base of this we have designed user interfaces for passive and active uses of a second screen to accompany a news broadcast. A next step is to understand the specific types of information users would like to consult and investigate whether these can be automatically generated.

Control of human visceral leishmaniasis in endemic regions is hampered in part by the lack of knowledge with respect of the role reservoirs and vector. In addition, there is not yet an understanding of how non-symptomatic subclinical infection might influence the maintenance of infection in a particular locality. Of worrisome is the limited accessibility to medical care in places with emerging drug resistance. There is still no available protective vaccine either for humans or other reservoirs. Leishmania species are protozoa that express multiple antigens which are recognized by the vertebrate immune system. Since there is not one immunodominant epitope recognized by most hosts, strategies must be developed to optimize selection of antigens for prevention and immunodiagnosis. For this reason, we generated a cDNA library from the intracellular amastigote form of Leishmania chagasi, the causative agent of South American visceral leishmaniasis. We employed a two-step expression screen of the library to systematically identify T and T-dependent B cell antigens. The first step was aimed at identifying the largest possible number of clones producing an epitope-containing polypeptide with a pool of sera from Brazilians with documented visceral leishmaniasis. After removal of clones encoding heat shock proteins, positive clones underwent a second step screen for their ability to cause proliferation and IFN-γ responses of T cells from immune mice. Six unique clones were selected from the second screen for further analysis. The clones encoded part of the coding sequence of glutamine synthetase, transitional endoplasmic reticulum ATPase, elongation factor 1γ, kinesin K-39, repetitive protein A2, and a hypothetical conserved protein. Humans naturally infected with L. chagasi mounted both cellular and antibody responses to these protein Preparations containing multiple antigens may be optimal for immunodiagnosis and protective vaccines against Leishmania
