A simple and efficient two-step hybrid electrochemical-thermal route was developed for the synthesis of large quantity of ZnO nanoparticles using aqueous sodium bicarbonate electrolyte and sacrificial Zn anode and cathode in an undivided cell under galvanostatic mode at room temperature. The bath concentration and current density were varied from 30 to 120 mmol and 0.05 to 1.5 A/dm(2). The electrochemically generated precursor was calcined for an hour at different range of temperature from 140 to 600 A degrees C. The calcined samples were characterized by XRD, SEM/EDX, TEM, TG-DTA, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectral methods. Rietveld refinement of X-ray data indicates that the calcined compound exhibits hexagonal (Wurtzite) structure with space group of P63mc (No. 186). The crystallite sizes were in the range of 22-75 nm based on Debye-Scherrer equation. The TEM results reveal that the particle sizes were in the order of 30-40 nm. The blue shift was noticed in UV-Vis absorption spectra, the band gaps were found to be 5.40-5.11 eV. Scanning electron micrographs suggest that all the samples were randomly oriented granular morphology.

This work describes the influence of the preparation method and the carbon support using a low contentof cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2/C 4%) on H2O2electrogeneration via the oxygen reduction reac-tion (ORR). For this purpose, the polymeric precursor (PPM) and sol-gel (SGM) methods with Vulcan XC72R (V) and Printex L6 (P) supports were employed. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffrac-tion (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TheXRD analysis identified two phases comprising CeO2and CeO 2-x. The smallest mean crystallite size wasexhibited for the 4% CeO2/C PPM P material, which was estimated using the Debye-Scherrer equation tobe 6 nm and 4 nm for the CeO2and the CeO 2-xphases, respectively, and was determined by TEM to be5.9 nm. XPS analysis was utilized to compare the oxygen content of the 4% CeO2/C PPM P to Printex L6.The electrochemical analysis was accomplished using a rotating ring-disk electrode. The results showedthat the 4% CeO2/C specimen, prepared by PPM and supported on Printex L6, was the best electrocatalystfor H2O2production in 1 mol L -1NaOH. This material showed the highest ring current, producing 88%H2O2and transferring 2.2 electrons per O 2molecule via the ORR at the lowest onset potential. Addition-ally, the ring-current of the 4% CeO2/C PPM P material was higher than that of Vulcan XC 72R and PrintexL6, the reference materials for H2O 2production, indicating the highest electrocatalytic activity for the 4%CeO2/C PPM P material. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. BACKGROUND Skull-base chondrosarcoma (ChSa) is a rare disease, and the prognostication of this disease entity is ill defined. METHODS We assessed the long-term local control (LC) results, overall survival (OS), and prognostic factors of skull-base ChSa patients treated with pencil beam scanning proton therapy (PBS PT). Seventy-seven (male, 35; 46%) patients with histologically confirmed ChSa were treated at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Median age was 38.9 years (range, 10.2-70.0y). Median delivered dose was 70.0 GyRBE (range, 64.0-76.0 GyRBE). LC, OS, and toxicity-free survival (TFS) rates were calculated using the Kaplan Meier method. RESULTS After a mean follow-up of 69.2 months (range, 4.6-190.8 mo), 6 local (7.8%) failures were observed, 2 of which were late failures. Five (6.5%) patients died. The actuarial 8-year LC and OS were 89.7% and 93.5%, respectively. Tumor volume > 25 cm(3) (P = .02), brainstem/optic apparatus compression at the time of PT (P = .04) and age >30 years (P = .08) were associated with lower rates of LC. High-grade (≥3) radiation-induced toxicity was observed in 6 (7.8%) patients. The 8-year high-grade TFS was 90.8%. A higher rate of high-grade toxicity was observed for older patients (P = .073), those with larger tumor volume (P = .069), and those treated with 5 weekly fractions (P = .069). CONCLUSIONS This is the largest PT series reporting the outcome of patients with low-grade ChSa of the skull base treated with PBS only. Our data indicate that protons are both safe and effective. Tumor volume, brainstem/optic apparatus compression, and age were prognosticators of local failures.

Fleck and Johnson (Int. J. Mech. Sci. 29 (1987) 507) and Fleck et al. (Proc. Inst. Mech. Eng. 206 (1992) 119) have developed foil rolling models which allow for large deformations in the roll profile, including the possibility that the rolls flatten completely. However, these models require computationally expensive iterative solution techniques. A new approach to the approximate solution of the Fleck et al. (1992) Influence Function Model has been developed using both analytic and approximation techniques. The numerical difficulties arising from solving an integral equation in the flattened region have been reduced by applying an Inverse Hilbert Transform to get an analytic expression for the pressure. The method described in this paper is applicable to cases where there is or there is not a flat region.
