We report on the measurement of the total differential scattering cross section of {Ar^+}-Ar at laboratory energies between 15 and 400 keV. Using an ab initio relativistic molecular program which calculates the interatomic potential energy curve with high accuracy, we are able to reproduce the detailed structure found in the experiment.

A crossed-beams energy-loss spectrometer has been used to investigate angular distributions for electron scattering from Ar2+ and Xe2+ ions, at a collision energy of 16 eV. For Ar2+ the measurements are compared with the predictions of a partial waves calculation based on a semi-empirical potential, where it is shown that the interference term governs the position of the observed minimum in the angular distribution.

A measurement of the total pp cross section at the LHC at √s = 7 TeV is presented. In a special run with high-β* beam optics, an integrated luminosity of 80 μb−1 was accumulated in order to measure the differential elastic cross section as a function of the Mandelstam momentum transfer variable t . The measurement is performed with the ALFA sub-detector of ATLAS. Using a fit to the differential elastic cross section in the |t | range from 0.01 GeV2 to 0.1 GeV2 to extrapolate to |t | →0, the total cross section, σtot(pp→X), is measured via the optical theorem to be: σtot(pp→X) = 95.35± 0.38 (stat.)± 1.25 (exp.)± 0.37 (extr.) mb, where the first error is statistical, the second accounts for all experimental systematic uncertainties and the last is related to uncertainties in the extrapolation to |t | → 0. In addition, the slope of the elastic cross section at small |t | is determined to be B = 19.73 ±0.14 (stat.) ±0.26 (syst.) GeV−2.

We describe our kt-resummation model for total cross-sections and show its application to pp and ¯pp scattering. The model uses mini-jets to drive the rise of the cross-section and soft gluon resummation in the infrared region to transform the violent rise of the mini-jet cross-section into a logarithmic behaviour in agreement with the Froissart bound.

The fluctuations exhibited by the cross sections generated in a compound-nucleus reaction or, more generally, in a quantum-chaotic scattering process, when varying the excitation energy or another external parameter, are characterized by the width Gamma(corr) of the cross-section correlation function. Brink and Stephen Phys. Lett. 5, 77 (1963)] proposed a method for its determination by simply counting the number of maxima featured by the cross sections as a function of the parameter under consideration. They stated that the product of the average number of maxima per unit energy range and Gamma(corr) is constant in the Ercison region of strongly overlapping resonances. We use the analogy between the scattering formalism for compound-nucleus reactions and for microwave resonators to test this method experimentally with unprecedented accuracy using large data sets and propose an analytical description for the regions of isolated and overlapping resonances.

Based on the isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model and the scaling model according to nucleon effective mass, effects of elastic and inelastic NN scattering cross sections on pi(-)/pi(+) in the neutron-rich reaction of Ca-48 + Ca-48 at a beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon are studied. It is found that cross-section effects of both NN elastic and inelastic scatterings affect Delta(1232), pi(-) and pi(+) production, as well as the value of pi(-)/pi(+).

The mirror nuclei N-12 and B-12 are separated by the Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou (RIBLL) at HIRFL from the breakup of 78.6 MeV/u N-14 on a Be target. The total reaction cross-sections of N-12 at 34.9 MeV/u and B-12 at 54.4 MeV/u on a Si target have been measured by using the transmission method. Assuming N-12 consists of a C-11 core plus one halo proton, the excitation function of N-12 and B-12 on a Si target and a C target were calculated with the Glauber model. It can fit the experimental data very well. The characteristic halo structure for N-12 was found with a large diffusion of the protons density distribution.

A study of proton-proton collisions in which two b hadrons are produced in association with a Z boson is reported. The collisions were recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, for an integrated luminosity of 5:2 fb-1. The b hadrons are identified by means of displaced secondary vertices, without the use of reconstructed jets, permitting the study of b-hadron pair production at small angular separation. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the angular separation of the b hadrons and the Z boson. In addition, inclusive measurements are presented. For both the inclusive and differential studies, different ranges of Z boson momentum are considered, and each measurement is compared to the predictions from different event generators at leading-order and next-to-leading-order accuracy. The- classic: experiment of Heinrich Hertz verified the theoretical predict him of Maxwell that kxnfli radio and light waves are physical phenomena governed by the same physical laws. This has started a.rnnJ era of interest in interaction of electromagnetic energy with matter. The scattering of electromagnetic waves from a target is cleverly utilized im1 RADAR. This electronic system used tx> detect and locate objects under unfavourable conditions or obscuration that would render the unaided eye useless. It also provides a means for measuring precisely the range, or distance of an object and the speed of a moving object. when an obstacle is illuminated by electromagnetic waves, energy is dispersed in all directions. The dispersed energy depends on the size, shape and composition of the obstacle and frequency and nature of the incident wave. This distribution of energy’ is known as ‘scattering’ and the obstacle as ‘scatterer’ or 'target'.

In this work we propose a simple model for the total proton-air cross section, which is an improvement of the minijet model with the inclusion of a window in the p(T)-spectrum associated to the saturation physics. Our approach introduces a natural cutoff for the perturbative calculations which modifies the energy behavior of this component. The saturated component is calculated with a dipole model. The results are compared with experimental cross sections measured in cosmic ray experiments.

Incoherent eta photoproduction in nuclei is evaluated at forward angles within 4 to 9 GeV using a multiple scattering Monte Carlo cascade calculation with full eta-nucleus final-state interactions. The Primakoff, nuclear coherent and nuclear incoherent components of the cross sections fit remarkably well previous measurements for Be and Cu from Cornell, suggesting a destructive interference between the Coulomb and nuclear coherent amplitudes for Cu. The inelastic background of the data is consistently attributed to the nuclear incoherent part, which is clearly not isotropic as previously considered in Cornell's analysis. The respective Primakoff cross sections from Be and Cu give Gamma(eta ->gamma gamma)=0.476(62) keV, where the quoted error is only statistical. This result is consistent with the Particle Data Group average of 0.510(26) keV and in sharp contrast (similar to 50%) with the value of 0.324(46) keV obtained at Cornell.

The t (t) over bar production cross section and top quark mass are measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment. The measurements are performed in events with two leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state. Results of the cross section measurement in events with and without b-quark identification are obtained and combined. The measured value is sigma(tt) - 168 +/- 18 (stat:) +/- 14 (syst:) +/- 7 (lumi:) pb, consistent with predictions from the standard model. The top quark mass m(top) is reconstructed with two different methods, a full kinematic analysis and a matrix weighting technique. The combination yields a measurement of m(top) = 175.5 +/- 4.6 (stat:) +/- 4: 6 (syst:) GeV/c(2).
