Coleodactylus natalensis Freire, 1999, an endemic species of Atlantic Forest fragments around the Natal municipality, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil, has as type locality the Parque Estadual Dunas de Natal (05º48 S to 05º53 S and 35º09 W to 35º12 W), one of the largest restinga (herb and shrub association on sand dunes along the Brazilian coastline) associate fragment, surrounded by urban zone, placed on setentrional Atlantic Forest limits. We made estimates on populational density, spatial distribution, habitat and microhabitat preferences and feeding ecological aspects like sazonal and sexual variations on diet, prey electivities and niche breadth. We randomly sampled ninety-six 50m2 quadrants in each of the four habitats identified in the study area. Were collected 49 specimens and their stomach contents were analyzed; prey items found were correlated with leaf-litter invertebrates from habitat samples. We found a 98,5 ± 75,5 individuals/ha density, in grouped distribution pattern on densest habitats and random distribution on others habitats. This species lives mostly on leaf-litter in forest habitats, in higher humidity points, with lower temperatures, deeper leaf litter and lower sea level elevations than the randomly chosen points in the study area. Isopoda and Aranae were the most important prey categories in numeric, frequency and volumetric terms. Niche breadth has an intermediate value and was variable in sexual and in habitat terms. There was no correlation between morfometric measures and prey size on diet. The C. natalensis population studied seems to be diet opportunist, although selects larger prey items. The Parque Estadual das Dunas do Natal has several indications of anthropic pressure from the surrounding urban area that may affects the local C. natalensis population. Thus, the fragility of this species calls for urgent conservation efforts

O complexo Gonatodes concinnatus, conforme estabelecido aqui, consiste nas espécies caracterizadas por uma mancha suprahumeral branca com margens pretas; vermiculações no dorso; e escamas alargadas sob a cauda, apresentando a seqüência 1’1’1” e, em alguns casos, 1’1’2” (na porção anterior). Duas espécies são atualmente reconhecidas neste grupo amazônico, G. concinnatus e G. tapajonicus. Novos materiais encontrados no leste da Amazônia (nos estados do Pará e Amapá, Brasil) fizeram necessária a revisão dessas espécies. Analisamos diversas populações dentro deste complexo, provenientes do Peru, Equador, Colômbia e Brasil (mas não da Venezuela), incluindo os novos registros. Os espécimes foram separados em grupos definidos com base no padrão de coloração. Análises discriminantes, utilizando o método por passos (stepwise), foram realizadas para comparar a morfologia externa (representada por medições e contagens de escama, separadamente) nestes grupos. Os resultados apóiam o reconhecimento de quatro táxons, correspondendo a G. concinnatus, da Amazônia Ocidental, no nordeste do Equador e do Peru; G. tapajonicus, da bacia do Rio Tapajós, no Pará, Brasil; e duas novas espécies, uma do leste da Amazônia, nos estados do Pará e Amapá, Brasil, e outra da região cisandina central da Colômbia. As diagnoses e descrições de todas as espécies são apresentadas.

Ninety-five specimens from 13 species of lizard collected during a herpetofaunal monitoring programme of the Faxinal II power plant, municipality of Aripuanã, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil (southern Amazon region) were examined for helminths. A total of 21 helminth species (16 Nematoda, 1 Cestoda and 4 Trematoda) were recovered, with an overall prevalence of 67.37%. Seventeen new host records and seven new locality records are reported. A low number of specialists and core helminth species were found. Lizard body size was positively correlated with both the total number of helminth species and individuals. Active foragers exhibited higher helminth diversity. However, sit-and-wait foragers, especially Plica plica, had similar diversity values as active foragers and harboured more helminth species. The degree of similarity in helminth fauna was higher among closely related host species. Copyright © 2011 Cambridge University Press.

Dietary data from a large sample of woodcreepers (16 spp., n?=?139), revealed that six species of dendrocolaptids occasionally feed upon lizards and frogs. These birds, which are mainly insectivorous, encounter and feed on lizards while perching on tree trunks, probably in association with army-ant swarm feeding behaviour. Frog intake may be related to declines in the abundance of invertebrate prey. The bones recovered were identified as one small species of gecko, Gonatodes humeralis, and at least one anuran. We estimate that in the entire sample, about eight lizards and two frogs were ingested. The partially digested gecko material allows determination of which bones are more resistant to digestion, although it is possible that these elements were differentially retained in the stomach. These elements correspond to the more frequently preserved bones in the fossil record of geckos, indicating that the same portions of the skeleton persist under the processes of both digestion and fossilization.
