One of the most undervalued problems by smartphone users is the security of data on their mobile devices. Today smartphones and tablets are used to send messages and photos and especially to stay connected with social networks, forums and other platforms. These devices contain a lot of private information like passwords, phone numbers, private photos, emails, etc. and an attacker may choose to steal or destroy this information. The main topic of this thesis is the security of the applications present on the most popular stores (App Store for iOS and Play Store for Android) and of their mechanisms for the management of security. The analysis is focused on how the architecture of the two systems protects users from threats and highlights the real presence of malware and spyware in their respective application stores. The work described in subsequent chapters explains the study of the behavior of 50 Android applications and 50 iOS applications performed using network analysis software. Furthermore, this thesis presents some statistics about malware and spyware present on the respective stores and the permissions they require. At the end the reader will be able to understand how to recognize malicious applications and which of the two systems is more suitable for him. This is how this thesis is structured. The first chapter introduces the security mechanisms of the Android and iOS platform architectures and the security mechanisms of their respective application stores. The Second chapter explains the work done, what, why and how we have chosen the tools needed to complete our analysis. The third chapter discusses about the execution of tests, the protocol followed and the approach to assess the “level of danger” of each application that has been checked. The fourth chapter explains the results of the tests and introduces some statistics on the presence of malicious applications on Play Store and App Store. The fifth chapter is devoted to the study of the users, what they think about and how they might avoid malicious applications. The sixth chapter seeks to establish, following our methodology, what application store is safer. In the end, the seventh chapter concludes the thesis.

In computer science, different types of reusable components for building software applications were proposed as a direct consequence of the emergence of new software programming paradigms. The success of these components for building applications depends on factors such as the flexibility in their combination or the facility for their selection in centralised or distributed environments such as internet. In this article, we propose a general type of reusable component, called primitive of representation, inspired by a knowledge-based approach that can promote reusability. The proposal can be understood as a generalisation of existing partial solutions that is applicable to both software and knowledge engineering for the development of hybrid applications that integrate conventional and knowledge based techniques. The article presents the structure and use of the component and describes our recent experience in the development of real-world applications based on this approach.

Acourse focused on the acquisition of integration competencies in ship production engineering, organized in collaboration with selected industry partners, is presented in this paper. The first part of the course is dedicated to Project Management: the students acquire skills in defining, using MS-PROJECT, the work breakdown structure (WBS), and the organization breakdown structure (OBS) in Engineering projects, through a series of examples of increasing complexity with the final one being the construction planning of a vessel. The second part of the course is dedicated to the use of a database manager, MS-ACCESS, in managing production related information.Aseries of increasing complexity examples is treated, the final one being the management of the piping database of a real vessel. This database consists of several thousand pipes, for which a production timing frame is defined connecting this part of the course with the first one. Finally, the third part of the course is devoted to working withFORAN,an Engineering Production application developed bySENERand widely used in the shipbuilding industry. With this application, the structural elements where all the outfittings will be located are defined through cooperative work by the students, working simultaneously in the same 3D model. In this paper, specific details about the learning process are given. Surveys have been posed to the students in order to get feedback from their experience as well as to assess their satisfaction with the learning process, compared to more traditional ones. Results from these surveys are discussed in the paper.

Higher education institutions are increasingly using social software tools to support teaching and learning. Despite the fact that social software is often used in a social context, these applications can significantly contribute to the educational experience of a student. However, as the social software domain comprises a considerable diversity of tools, the respective tools can be expected to differ in the way they can contribute to teaching and learning. In this review on the educational use of social software, we systematically analyze and compare the diverse social software tools and identify their contributions to teaching and learning. By integrating established learning theory and the extant literature on the individual social software applications we seek to contribute to a theoretical foundation for social software use and the choice of tools. Case vignettes from several UK higher education institutions are used to illustrate the different applications of social software tools in teaching and learning.

We do not commonly associate software engineering with philosophical debate. Indeed, software engineers ought to be concerned with building software systems and not settling philosophical questions. I attempt to show that software engineers do, in fact, take philosophical sides when designing software applications. In particular, I look at how the problem of vagueness arises in software engineering and argue that when software engineers solve it, they commit to philosophical views that they are seldom aware of. In the second part of the paper, I suggest a way of dealing with vague predicates without having to confront the problem of vagueness itself. The purpose of my paper is to highlight the currently prevalent disconnect between philosophy and software engineering. I claim that a better knowledge of the philosophical debate is important as it can have ramifications for crucial software design decisions. Better awareness of philosophical issues not only produces better software engineers, it also produces better engineered products.
Towards an understanding of the causes and effects of software requirements change: two case studies

Changes to software requirements not only pose a risk to the successful delivery of software applications but also provide opportunity for improved usability and value. Increased understanding of the causes and consequences of change can support requirements management and also make progress towards the goal of change anticipation. This paper presents the results of two case studies that address objectives arising from that ultimate goal. The first case study evaluated the potential of a change source taxonomy containing the elements ‘market’, ‘organisation’, ‘vision’, ‘specification’, and ‘solution’ to provide a meaningful basis for change classification and measurement. The second case study investigated whether the requirements attributes of novelty, complexity, and dependency correlated with requirements volatility. While insufficiency of data in the first case study precluded an investigation of changes arising due to the change source of ‘market’, for the remainder of the change sources, results indicate a significant difference in cost, value to the customer and management considerations. Findings show that higher cost and value changes arose more often from ‘organisation’ and ‘vision’ sources; these changes also generally involved the co-operation of more stakeholder groups and were considered to be less controllable than changes arising from the ‘specification’ or ‘solution’ sources. Results from the second case study indicate that only ‘requirements dependency’ is consistently correlated with volatility and that changes coming from each change source affect different groups of requirements. We conclude that the taxonomy can provide a meaningful means of change classification, but that a single requirement attribute is insufficient for change prediction. A theoretical causal account of requirements change is drawn from the implications of the combined results of the two case studies.

Expert supervision systems are software applications specially designed to automate process monitoring. The goal is to reduce the dependency on human operators to assure the correct operation of a process including faulty situations. Construction of this kind of application involves an important task of design and development in order to represent and to manipulate process data and behaviour at different degrees of abstraction for interfacing with data acquisition systems connected to the process. This is an open problem that becomes more complex with the number of variables, parameters and relations to account for the complexity of the process. Multiple specialised modules tuned to solve simpler tasks that operate under a co-ordination provide a solution. A modular architecture based on concepts of software agents, taking advantage of the integration of diverse knowledge-based techniques, is proposed for this purpose. The components (software agents, communication mechanisms and perception/action mechanisms) are based on ICa (Intelligent Control architecture), software middleware supporting the build-up of applications with software agent features

Oligonucleotides comprising unnatural building blocks, which interfere with the translation machinery, have gained increased attention for the treatment of gene-related diseases (e.g. antisense, RNAi). Due to structural modifications, synthetic oligonucleotides exhibit increased biostability and bioavailability upon administration. Consequently, classical enzyme-based sequencing methods are not applicable to their sequence elucidation and verification. Tandem mass spectrometry is the method of choice for performing such tasks, since gas-phase dissociation is not restricted to natural nucleic acids. However, tandem mass spectrometric analysis can generate product ion spectra of tremendous complexity, as the number of possible fragments grows rapidly with increasing sequence length. The fact that structural modifications affect the dissociation pathways greatly increases the variety of analytically valuable fragment ions. The gas-phase dissociation of oligonucleotides is characterized by the cleavage of one of the four bonds along the phosphodiester chain, by the accompanying loss of nucleases, and by the generation of internal fragments due to secondary backbone cleavage. For example, an 18-mer oligonucleotide yields a total number of 272’920 theoretical fragment ions. In contrast to the processing of peptide product ion spectra, which nowadays is highly automated, there is a lack of tools assisting the interpretation of oligonucleotide data. The existing web-based and stand-alone software applications are primarily designed for the sequence analysis of natural nucleic acids, but do not account for chemical modifications and adducts. Consequently, we developed a software to support the interpretation of mass spectrometric data of natural and modified nucleic acids and their adducts with chemotherapeutic agents.

Usability is the capability of the software product to be understood, learned, used and attractive to the user, when used under specified conditions. Many studies demonstrate the benefits of usability, yet to this day software products continue to exhibit consistently low levels of this quality attribute. Furthermore, poor usability in software systems contributes largely to software failing in actual use. One of the main disciplines involved in usability is that of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Over the past two decades the HCI community has proposed specific features that should be present in applications to improve their usability, yet incorporating them into software continues to be far from trivial for software developers. These difficulties are due to multiple factors, including the high level of abstraction at which these HCI recommendations are made and how far removed they are from actual software implementation. In order to bridge this gap, the Software Engineering community has long proposed software design solutions to help developers include usability features into software, however, the problem remains an open research question. This doctoral thesis addresses the problem of helping software developers include specific usability features into their applications by providing them with a structured and tangible guidance in the form of a process, which we have termed the Usability-Oriented Software Development Process. This process is supported by a set of Software Usability Guidelines that help developers to incorporate a set of eleven usability features with high impact on software design. After developing the Usability-oriented Software Development Process and the Software Usability Guidelines, they have been validated across multiple academic projects and proven to help software developers to include such usability features into their software applications. In doing so, their use significantly reduced development time and improved the quality of the resulting designs of these projects. Furthermore, in this work we propose a software tool to automate the application of the proposed process. In sum, this work contributes to the integration of the Software Engineering and HCI disciplines providing a framework that helps software developers to create usable applications in an efficient way.

A high productivity rate in Engineering is related to an efficient management of the flow of the large quantities of information and associated decision making activities that are consubstantial to the Engineering processes both in design and production contexts. Dealing with such problems from an integrated point of view and mimicking real scenarios is not given much attention in Engineering degrees. In the context of Engineering Education, there are a number of courses designed for developing specific competencies, as required by the academic curricula, but not that many in which integration competencies are the main target. In this paper, a course devoted to that aim is discussed. The course is taught in a Marine Engineering degree but the philosophy could be used in any Engineering field. All the lessons are given in a computer room in which every student can use each all the treated software applications. El proyecto trata del desarrollo de un software para realizar el control de la medida de la distribución de intensidad luminosa en luminarias LED. En el trascurso del proyecto se expondrán fundamentos teóricos sobre fotometría básica, de los cuales se extraen las condiciones básicas para realizar dicha medida. Además se realiza una breve descripción del hardware utilizado en el desarrollo de la máquina, el cual se basa en una placa de desarrollo Arduino Mega 2560, que, gracias al paquete de Labview “LIFA” (Labview Interface For Arduino”), será posible utilizarla como tarjeta de adquisición de datos mediante la cual poder manejar tanto sensores como actuadores, para las tareas de control. El instrumento de medida utilizado en este proyecto es el BTS256 de la casa GigaHerzt-Optik, del cual se dispone de un kit de desarrollo tanto en lenguaje C++ como en Labview, haciendo posible programar aplicaciones basadas en este software para realizar cualquier tipo de adaptación a las necesidades del proyecto. El software está desarrollado en la plataforma Labview 2013, esto es gracias a que se dispone del kit de desarrollo del instrumento de medida, y del paquete LIFA. El objetivo global del proyecto es realizar la caracterización de luminarias LED, de forma que se obtengan medidas suficientes de la distribución de intensidad luminosa. Los datos se recogerán en un archivo fotométrico específico, siguiendo la normativa IESNA 2002 sobre formato de archivos fotométricos, que posteriormente será utilizado en la simulación y estudio de instalaciones reales de la luminaria. El sistema propuesto en este proyecto, es un sistema basado en fotometría tipo B, utilizando coordenadas VH, desarrollando un algoritmo de medida que la luminaria describa un ángulo de 180º en ambos ejes, con una resolución de 5º para el eje Vertical y 22.5º para el eje Horizontal, almacenando los datos en un array que será escrito en el formato exigido por la normativa. Una vez obtenidos los datos con el instrumento desarrollado, el fichero generado por la medida, es simulado con el software DIALux, obteniendo unas medidas de iluminación en la simulación que serán comparadas con las medidas reales, intentando reproducir en la simulación las condiciones reales de medida. ABSTRACT. The project involves the development of software for controlling the measurement of light intensity distribution in LEDs. In the course of the project theoretical foundations on basic photometry, of which the basic conditions for such action are extracted will be presented. Besides a brief description of the hardware used in the development of the machine, which is based on a Mega Arduino plate 2560 is made, that through the package Labview "LIFA" (Interface For Arduino Labview "), it is possible to use as data acquisition card by which to handle both sensors and actuators for control tasks. The instrument used in this project is the BTS256 of GigaHerzt-Optik house, which is available a development kit in both C ++ language as LabView, making it possible to program based on this software applications for any kind of adaptation to project needs. The software is developed in Labview 2013 platform, this is thanks to the availability of the SDK of the measuring instrument and the LIFA package. The overall objective of the project is the characterization of LED lights, so that sufficient measures the light intensity distribution are obtained. Data will be collected on a specific photometric file, following the rules IESNA 2002 on photometric format files, which will then be used in the simulation and study of actual installations of the luminaire. The proposed in this project is a system based on photometry type B system using VH coordinates, developing an algorithm as the fixture describe an angle of 180 ° in both axes, with a resolution of 5 ° to the vertical axis and 22.5º for the Horizontal axis, storing data in an array to be written in the format required by the regulations. After obtaining the data with the instrument developed, the file generated by the measure, is simulated with DIALux software, obtaining measures of lighting in the simulation will be compared with the actual measurements, trying to play in the simulation the actual measurement conditions .

A tecnologização que a sociedade experimenta nas últimas décadas trouxe a profusão de máquinas informatizadas e seus sistemas de operação. Neste período a indústria desenvolveu sofisticados e caros softwares aplicativos proprietários para o pleno uso destas máquinas, o que colocou boa parte do mercado social nas mãos de poucas empresas multinacionais, entre elas, a Microsoft, e outras. Mas, o espírito libertário de membros das comunidades científicas e hackers promoveu o desenvolvimento do software livre e aberto, que pode ser usado como bem social mais amplo e, principalmente, evoluir no melhor do espírito colaborativo. O presente trabalho estuda os dois modelos de produção de software, os compara visando tornar evidentes as qualidades de cada um, seus custos, rendimentos e possibilidades de adoção. Projeta a possibilidade de que as habilitações da área da comunicação possam migrar para o modelo de software livre, dadas as plenas qualidades deste sistema, a radical redução de custos e as constatações que amplos segmentos da produção audiovisual os está adotando. Para tanto, compara as experiências aplicadas com ambos os sistemas em dois cursos de comunicação, em sua habilitação de Rádio e Televisão.(AU)

Context: Today’s project managers have a myriad of methods to choose from for the development of software applications. However, they lack empirical data about the character of these methods in terms of usefulness, ease of use or compatibility, all of these being relevant variables to assess the developer’s intention to use them. Objective: To compare three methods, each following a different paradigm (Model-Driven, Model-Based and Code-Centric) with respect to their adoption potential by junior software developers engaged in the development of the business layer of a Web 2.0 application. Method: We have conducted a quasi-experiment with 26 graduate students of the University of Alicante. The application developed was a Social Network, which was organized around a fixed set of modules. Three of them, similar in complexity, were used for the experiment. Subjects were asked to use a different method for each module, and then to answer a questionnaire that gathered their perceptions during such use. Results: The results show that the Model-Driven method is regarded as the most useful, although it is also considered the least compatible with previous developers’ experiences. They also show that junior software developers feel comfortable with the use of models, and that they are likely to use them if the models are accompanied by a Model-Driven development environment. Conclusions: Despite their relatively low level of compatibility, Model-Driven development methods seem to show a great potential for adoption. That said, however, further experimentation is needed to make it possible to generalize the results to a different population, different methods, other languages and tools, different domains or different application sizes.

The new Spanish legislation in Energy Saving, similar to European regulation, provides new technical requirements to adequate technical solutions used in integral rehabilitation of existing buildings. The aim of this paper is to present, analyze and discuss the main thermal insulation constructive solutions best suited to a Mediterranean climate, and conclude on their suitability under the legislation in Energy Saving. The proposed methodology is based on the most usual constructive solutions in integral rehabilitation of buildings by analyzing their outstanding design features, by studying its construction details and then by applying the software provided by the Spanish legislation of energy efficiency in buildings. The results of the study evaluate and classify several solutions for façade rehabilitation according to energy efficiency criteria and their suitability for this type of weather, verifying the necessity of using software applications in energy saving for the proper design of constructive solutions in building rehabilitation.
